    When I think of the many times I used to just lay on a surf board relaxing, so far away from the shore..just bobbing up and down not even taking death seriously at all. How.

    When my daughter was 12 years old, we visited Hawaii. She wanted to try surfing . I got her a teacher and off she went. She swore she got bumped by a shark , I didn’t really believe her. Thought it was just a12 year olds imagination. After watching these videos I’m second guessing myself. Maybe she was a lucky girl 👧🏼.

      Bulls like freshwater for breeding and safety, Tigers/Whites are like 1/3 to 1/2 bigger than bulls on average. Also Hawaii is way off in the middle of the pacific and my understanding is they don't do well like 100m+ from shore

    "That's what keeps me out of saltwater!" Lol..I agree Hal! After living in Florida for 30 years going to college in Tallahassee, living in New Orleans for a year whenever I run next to a flooded creek in California now I remember how sweet it is that a gator isn't going to pop out at me! Encountered wild boar & turned around, a bob cat & a mountain lion but all were in front of me none stalking me so the beauty is you stop, walk backwards then turn around. Predatory animals on land leave you pretty much alone if you keep your space...how many times I did snorkel boats & dive boats twice 9 miles offshore in the Keys. I'm never going back in the saltwater again!!!

    The way such a huge animal can sneak up on you is the scariest part about sharks for me. Great whites know which direction humans are facing too and will approach you from behind and from the direction the sun is shining so you're looking into glare. I had a large white pointer swim right by me and I had absolutely no idea it was there until I felt water moving by my leg and looked down.

    Hal, is it possible sharks see surfboards and the surfers paddling as small sharks? The shape of the board, the surfer paddling could look like fins. As you’ve said a lot of these chomp and goes are usually real estate defence, but every now and then a shark will predate as if saying to the “ surfboard sharks “ this is what will happen to you if I see anymore of you in my water. In your opinion, is this a reasonable theory?

    • @SharksHappen
      @SharksHappen  7 місяців тому +2

      Problem is the shallow waters most surfers are in. Surfboards unlike kayaks are usually hit from the side and the view of a surfer on a surfboard just below water level looks like no animal i have ever seen in the water other than a human on a board.

      @@SharksHappen Thank, Hal. I had to it run by you. Back to do a rethink. Not overthink it ( that’s when problems happen ) in a perfect world, Spock could do a mind meld with a bull and the answer would probably be “ because we can “ You should do a poster of Spock and a shark. Not sure about trademark infringement, but I would buy a bunch and give them as gifts. Or just a great white on a mug saying, because I can. X-mas is coming, Hal. I tried to buy last year, but you had nothing. Understandable with everything else that was going on.

    At Fuchirama Atoll, Indonesia there's a scuba spot called the wall of sharks and at any one time there are 300 to 600 black and white tip sharks, as well as other species, present in the water. It's not especially dangerous, but you have to be aware when you're in the water there.

    papua new guinea is terrifying...& i think new caledonia too is indo-pacific? with all the saltie croc attacks we never hear about. ('cause they're on the locals.)
    alligators, though -- it's said -- aren't really much to worry about.

    I think I remember those sharks in the movie were carribean grey reef sharks. Might have been some camera tricks putting Bronzies on screen.

    We were wade fishing once and my brother was putting a mullet on his hook. A wave rolled up over his chest and as soon as his hand with the mullet went under the water a shark grabbed the mullet and his hand. Cut him up pretty good but no loss of fingers or serious bleeding. That was the last time we wade fished. Its strictly on the boat now or kayaks.
