      Yeah it’s a damn shame, I used to watch freddiew’s videos all the time back in the early 2010’s but since the medium of what Freddie is doing is so widespread nowadays, his content hardly matters anymore. If maybe Freddie evolved his content a little bit more, maybe he could’ve hung around a little longer.

    This is kinda sad to hear... freddiew and the crew back in 2010 was the MAIN AND WHOLE reason i started youtube and editing. The main reason how i got into movie making, editing, youtube, film school and a batchelor in film. Iv been having multiple channels doing VFX and skits since FreddieW golden days.
    That you guys dont have the same, or even more influence on youtube, is so sad... now mainstream media and vloggers like Jake paul and old Viners hs taken over the content on youtube. Only a week ago i re-visited the old coridor and freddiew videos, and it felt sooo good. Its my childhood. I want a job at Coridor really, that would be a dream

      I feel you man. Freddiew was the main reason I found my passion in filmmaking and pursued it as a career. The way Freddiew edited his videos also inspired me to be like him and maybe be better than him. Because of him, I'm now working in the media industry. Its sad that all these UA-cam feature and short films are being taken over by vloggers who usually put no effort in their videos.

    • @HashSl1ng1ngSlasher
      @HashSl1ng1ngSlasher 5 років тому +64

      Don't be sad. They're angry that traditional media doesn't allow for them, but fail to acknowledge that traditional media is on its way out. What's happening to television now will happen to movies in 15 years, and EVERYONE will be doing what FreddieW did, it'll be like a switch that's flipped.
      What's being yearned for here is establishment and structure, and to be a part of the status-quo instead of a trendsetter, which is sensible and I understand it.
      The current shift we're seeing - towards establishment and vlogging over the parts of youtube that were originally great - is the last dying breath of that status quo attempting to adapt to the trend that FW and CD established, and the thing is, it's not working. The views these companies bring in on youtube in no way make up for the views they lost from cord-cutters; what's more, if the trend continues, it's simply fertile ground for the NEXT youtube to come and take the old one's place.

      Same, Freddie and what he created inspired me to look into film and eventually CG, which I still am aspiring to master. Freddie is going through what tens of thousands of UA-camrs will be going through in a few years. All these 19-24 year old freshed-faced vloggers seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that where was an entire decade of content creators before them who are currently trying to figure out how to keep this career alive as they get older, get married, have kids, etc. The entertainment world has always been a harsh business, that won't ever change.

      The world is bigger than Hollywood. And in these last years the best films were either indies or productions from outside the U.S. So forget about Hollywood. Go out in the world. Especially Freddy with his skills will have a bigger and better chance to make the movies he wants.

    • @forkayebee3831
      @forkayebee3831 4 роки тому +22

      @@chrichtonsworld1 Not really, it's a completely different ball game. As he points out the amount of people and skill you need to make a movie doesn't just exist everywhere. It's like finding out someone is an engineer, they are never just an engineer but an engineer in something. This is the same with film making, just because you can make good youtube content doesn't mean you can make good film, and vice versa. They are two entirely different skill sets and there is a reason why so many indie movies fail or don't get funded.
      Hollywood also has better unions in place for film making, that is sorta important for this industry as well and the successful indies you do see, are from insanely talented and very lucky people. One other thing, directing yourself or a few friends in youtube is completely different from an entire set worth of people needed in film making, there is a reason there are so many people in movie ending credits and every last one of them is needed for film making. It's a beast and really to have the infrastructure to feed that beast, not many places can do it and many of the skills needed you never get from youtube.
      Again, I may be an aerospace engineer but I know fuck all about structural engineering. The world and jobs and what not are complex entities adn very rarely do specialty skill sets translate. Hence why all actors who want to direct usually cant and all directors who want to act suck. The ones we remember and think of are the one out of a million who succeed.

      This statement becomes more truthful with every year that passes. UA-cam has been rewarding creators more and more for posting every day for years now, and posting every single day just isn't doable for channels that are trying to break boundaries and impress people with every single video. A couple of months ago creators needed to have 4000 hours of watch time to monetize their channels, now it's 4000 in the last 30 days. That's an insane amount of hours for a smaller channel, if you're not posting pretty much every single day good luck getting that.

    2:00 SO TRUE. I tried doing a small film back in college here in ND I was all excited for it and had a few friends who seemed interested in doing it with me. It wasn't gonna be very long like 15-30 minutes tops we had lots of ideas. I scheduled a lot of stuff put a lot of stuff together. Got a place to film it, even got a cameraman or two to help for free (which was very nice of them). Then tried to find just some extras in the background even if they were just sitting there studying or working on homework. Didn't really find anyone, then luckily like a week before found 2 that were gonna be nearby anyways and were okay with being filmed. Then my one friend kinda just backed out without telling me or he did tell me. The day of the shoot the other friend was no where to be found, called him up and he was told "im on my way" waited a bit was down to just me, and one of my friends. Wanted 4 people, needed like 3 at least. Luckily a guy I knew was around and was willing to be in it which was great.
    In the end the one cameraman (who was kinda new to it) forgot to take the protective clear plastic off the lens of the one camera and so half the footage was slightly blurry :( I had to do almost everything and if I could have I would have done everything but sometimes you need others to do stuff cause you can't do everything all at once and when relying on people it can make problems. At the end of the shoot the one friend finally showed up and it was like "well you missed it cause you were late" but he didn't seem to care. -_-
    Maybe if I had money to give to people to work for me it would have been slightly better but making movies in places other then California just doesn't work to well unless your okay with doing it all alone without extras or other actors etc. That's one of the major factors that has been deterring me from doing videos like I want cause im just me and I can only rely on myself but it's hard to film something that requires some actors and your just you and operating the camera and lighting etc. At least with the editing of that film I made I had all the control of where I wanted the music, where I wanted cuts etc.

    I was going to say that while I love Corridor and FreddieW's videos, I always felt that there was a lower expectation of quality on youtube because it's free and easily accessible content, and a lot of successful youtubers find an audience because the content is right there at your fingertips and free to watch.
    Then again, most of what Hollywood puts out these days isn't worth paying theatre ticket prices for in my opinion, so many he has a point.

      Honestly I didn’t like their latest projects. They were made to be an exaggeration by default, but still, it looked too fake. And even the things that were supposed to be real (like some fights) looked fake. I understand it’s very hard to make a good action scene, but I think they should’ve done it better (especially cause they had the equipment and stunt team). That’s why I didn’t really watch their videos too much.

      @@Faceplay2 that IS how the industry works. But not necessarily how it SHOULD work.
      The film and theatre industries are some of the most exclusive and elitist out there. Acting guilds and filmmakers guilds are basically required to land a good job, but you have to either know someone on the inside or already be famous through dumb luck to get in.
      Actors and filmmakers who produce better material are passed over in favor of the guy who was lucky enough to pour the producer a great cup of coffee.
      There's a reason we still talk about the underrepresentation of certain groups in the film world. Because despite film and theatre being some of the most liberal occupational communities, they are still super slow to change, and the producers look at money and conventionalism over quality.

    You had a major series go from UA-cam to Netflix, but Hollywood doesnt want to work with you? Then dont work with Hollywood, work with Netflix. Work with Hulu. Work with HBO. People need to get away from this "it has to be on the big screen to matter" ideal.

    • @Argentfan
      @Argentfan 5 років тому +64

      That's not how VFX works. High quality VFX takes astronomical amounts of time to put together. A cheap 10 second clip might take an hour to put together. A high end 10 second clip might take a week. Movies don't just give you more money because it is a better quality. They pay you to sit there and work on that same 10 seconds for far longer.
      He likely wants to go Hollywood because it allows him to do more. He gets bigger budgets, he gets better actors, he gets better crew, everything is bigger and better. UA-cam, Hulu, and web in general is bottom dollar. You have to make something great out of nothing. Sometimes that works out big time, but in most cases it just turns into some forgettable drivel. It is easier to make a masterpiece if you have the right tools.

      @@EmceeTimmyT I live and work in the movie/TV/commercial industry in Hollywood. All of the major creative operations of Netflix, HBO and Hulu are in Los Angeles, specifically Hollywood and Burbank.
      And the vast majority of shows on Netflix are made by separate production companies and sold to Netflix. Nearly all of those companies are in LA, with a few in New York. Even most of the British and Canadian shows have significant operations in Los Angeles. If you want to produce a movie or TV show and get a good crew and good actors you need to work in either LA or New York, with Chicago being a distant third.
      Freddie's bigger problem is that he doesn't really have anything worth buying. He can make fun VFX skits, but his work on longer form, story-based entertainment is not good. The acting, writing and general plot of stuff like VGHS is terrible. No producer would look at that and think he would make a good director. His low budget VFX skills aren't really worth anything if he wants to be a director, as the VFX are going to be done by an actual VFX/compositing house.

    I think you could do this on a low budget and do something special.
    The big change I always feel is that movies tend to have a certain visual 'look' that sometimes seems distinct from youtube stuff. I don't know if they're filming on a different camera or what, but sometimes the visual quality of even a low budget horror is quite good compared to yt.
    That and you need a great story!!!

In the past online views have been good however I got my first break in Television in the UK because one of my films turned a small profit in it's theatrical release. Our "Innumerevoli Ombre" web-series has won prizes around the world (New York, Los Angeles, Rome) and that has allowed us to do something else. Freddie (and Sam and Niko) need to do the opposite journey: now that they have this experience and strength deriving from their series on the web, they need to do a short self-produced to take around at festivals and with which to look for a contract for a film.

    Ironic. Allot of new VFX and editors in Hollywood most likely got a few tricks from Freddie's old tutorials. Especially the gun muzzle flash one.

      I find it funny most big budget films and shows today have worse muzzle flash effects that UA-cam videos from 2009. Most VFX artists still don’t know how to properly do it. It’s still better to go with blanks and squibs on a project like that in my opinion.

    Here's the thing though, you can still make the stuff your UA-cam fans like while also doing more traditional shorts that you can send out to festivals to win awards. After a festival run, release it on UA-cam.
    You can still put up BTS stuff on your channel to keep people engaged with your channel while working on these projects to garner acclaim in the industry, but you don't. You don't need to focus on a feature think smaller do shorts that are specifically designed for festivals. Corridor Digitals short "ROT" would have been perfect for festivals instead it was just released on UA-cam.

      I don't know if it's black and white like that. You gotta keep the content coming on UA-cam with our 3 min attention spans nowadays or people forget about you. It takes corridor 5-6 people employed full time to keep their operation running. And if you're gonna do something more serious/traditional you'll probably want to invest a lot of time. I get your point but I understand their frustrations also.

    • @MoonDoggie82
      @MoonDoggie82 5 років тому

      @@anemoiacApache true but why hire these content creator to just do UA-cam videos? Why invest all this money in camera equipment just for UA-cam videos? Majority of people are watching on their phones so there is no need for these 100k cameras and lenses to just make UA-cam videos.
      Content on the main Corridor channel is few and far between, so the majority of content is coming from the crew channel so again keep pumping content there out especially with BTS for shorts going into festivals and after the festival run you release it on UA-cam. Content on their main channel (which is now Crew since it's the only channel with consistency) won't be affected and on the original channel you'll hopefully have awards to show in the thumbnails of the new shorts.
      But honestly what has Rocket Jump done lately (besides ACD)? I'm subscribed but nothing even hits my inbox. They could they could easily apply the step I listed above to push quality content and be seen in the industry as more than just UA-camrs.

      @@MoonDoggie82 I feel like after 2 years of festival runs, your video won't do well anymore on youtube. And the majority that watches on their phones means you want less quality and depth in colors and difference between light and dark? Make it easier for yourself to do visual effects while having more flexible working experience and more experience on the high-end level, why would they NOT use better equipment? Should they just do Vines then? Or TicTok? No. It's their brand and their lvl of professionality and quality is what got them this far.

      @@CharleyBoersen I'm not saying don't use the expensive stuff and not to go for great quality. What I'm saying is that there are options. Even if it's one short a year, you want more recognition in the industry and not just be seen as UA-camrs then do something about that. Your film shouldn't be in the festival circuit for more then a year.
      Like right now what is Corridor working on? Besides the podcast (which shouldn't have it's own channel) what projects are they working on? "Man vs Horse" was a month ago and "Did you see our tv commercial" should have been on the Corridor Crew channel. The last real shorts the did that weren't just skits were ROT (10 months ago), Urban Zelda (4 moths ago) and The Moth (3 months ago). The Spider-Man short was done by their intern.
      I would trust these guys with making a movie but industry folks would probably see all the skits and be like yeah that's good enough for commercials. Of course keep making the skits but isn't that the easy stuff at this point?

    Honestly new media is and always will be seen as a different arm of the industry. As I finish up my last year of film school I’m reminded how throughout my experience we’ve always been told that new media stuff like youtube is it’s own thing and if you want to go that route then go do so, but know that you won’t be involved in anything traditional unless you go the traditional route

  • @kilgary
    @kilgary 4 роки тому +4

    Here’s the thing: there’s more traditional content now than ever before with Netflix, Hulu, Disney +, HBO Max, Peacock, Qubi, etc. If these guys want the freedom to be funded for their own projects, they need to pay their dues in traditional media. Direct a show for the Disney channel, then Freeform, then CBS, then Netflix. Keep striving for bigger budgets. Once you direct one tentpole series ($8m+ episodic budget) you will be able to direct more. Then you can pitch yourself as the director of Stranger Things rather than Videogame High School and you can get financing for your solo film. You aren’t going to be able to jump the line with UA-cam credits but you can get your foot in the door and then pay your dues for a few years. If you want it, you can get it.
