But yeah, that fight was MUCH worse than I thought. And yeah, that's not including the horrible plot, and plot continuity errors between 7 and 8 lol

I just wrote a similar comment :D That little section in the trailer is what made me go watch it. He looks like a bull that's about to start charging. Definitely one of the most badass fight-entering scenes ever.
Cavill is really underrated as an action star. I think because Superman doesn't need to fight that much we get lost in that. He needs to do more films like MA.
@Tyrell Suraiya well it was my point of Superman doesn't really need to fight because of who he is. So people really don't know Cavill as being someone who can do fight scenes like this. And he's great at it.
Really enjoyed this. 4:20 that fight's really bad, kudos for Eric Linden calling it out. The stuntmen probably had to do those spins because they were painted into a corner. They were expected to look busy in lengthy, wide angles where everyone stands around butt naked swinging their sticks. You could salvage some of this choreography with coverage, but if you wanna shoot it all wide and slow, you need better choreography.
This happens in all group fight scenes large or small, blockbuster or indie, not just Last Jedi. It's fucking awful. There's always some idiot hanging back or doing something unnecessary, just watch the background actors in any large fight scene
Something that should be pointed out is that the way the scene is set up is trying SUPER hard to hide that stuff in the moment, though. We've got both our main characters, one in white and the other in black, right in the middle of the frame with everyone else wearing bright red with red weapons on a red background, so when you're just casually watching the film, all you're really catching is the reactions of the main characters and the fact that movement is happening in your peripherals. And because it's done in pretty long takes without using stuntmen, things aren't going to work out perfectly, but you can tell that everything about how its shot is trying to get around that as much as possible. That's kind-of why I feel like it gets a bit too much flack, right? Because this is pretty standard and you can tell they're trying to make things work in a way where you won't really tell mid-film because the big point is that these two characters are working together to overcome these guys. So they want everything to be focused on these characters with a lot of focus on their faces and actions. But because it's Star Wars, I feel like it gets a lot more hate than it really deserves because people are extra critical of the new films overall due to nostalgia and stuff.
Ronin and Bourne Identity were superb! I hated Baby Driver, too much editing for my taste. They made so many cuts for some of the scenes, they couldn't look more fake.
Respect to Tom Cruise. His stunts are so death-defying. He is one of those rare actors who can act and do his own stunts. He is so dedicated to his craft.
I love that you guys included The Great Buster Keaton in your very first video because... let's face it. Without Mr Keaton, I don't think we would be able to enjoy great stunts done by great stuntmen and stuntwomen (and actors) today.
You should react to Donnie Yen and Jet Li's fight in "Hero". One of the greatest films ever made and their fight scene has to be one of the greatest fight scenes ever in film. The choreography is insane.
It’s far from a “fight” scene. It’s definitely a theater act that’s more of a “dance”. China is known for their insane theater groups, and this is a great example. But yea, I wouldn’t consider it a “fight”, per se.
@@aus-li Donnie Yen vs Jing Wu, Alley fight from Killzone S.P.L. (2005). There is some sick improvisation in the fight where both where going at it without choreography. Flashpoint (2007) is another one with sick realistic moves. Donnie Yen learned some MMA style fighting styles with lots of grappling and throwing. Shit looks like people break their bones. Also every movie with Tony Jaa is a goldmine for sick stunts and ass kicking.
RyoMassaki I was never a big fan of Donnie Yen. That Killzone choreography wasn’t my style, too unrealistic and cringe for me, lol. However the Flash Point looked really awesome, I like that type of fighting. Yep, been watching Tony Jaa since The Protector, he’s dope.
Coordinated Punisher Season 2? That season has some of the best fight coordination ever in TV. The fights just have a brutality and realism that a lot of scenes in other movies lack... Appreciate your work my man.
I want to thank you for the punisher. I'm still really gutted we aren't getting another series, but I really love the 2 we did get. Superb stunt work, great fights. Thank you Eric.
Don't get me wrong, I love Jackie, but Tony Jaa in the protector they show at the end definitely has a better blend of fighting with the stunts, it's so kickass
They missed a part in the last jedi fight, where they litteraly edit out one of the guards knives things when he went to attack rey, cause if he stilled had that knife thing, he would of been able to kill rey, cause rey only blocked one knife thing, and if he still had the other one, he would of have a free shot to stab her.
Would love to see The Raid Hallway fight where he smashes the guys head into the wall as he falls and the broken door finisher. And obviously some John Wick.
Inwas hoping for the Raid final scene with the 2 brothers (i can't remember their names) vs Maddog. That scene is literally insane. The raid is one of my favourite action movies of all time
Right? I really wish they talked about how weapons disappear between shots like the one guard with two small swords had a wide open shot on Rey and his sword randomly disappears

"Tom Cruise is 56 and he's running, flying helicopter, jumping off plane and buildings. I'm 22 and sometimes I pull a muscle while yawning." At his age, I will in a wheelchair 😂

@@BravadoAvacado I think Winter Soldier had horrible fight scenes, so many needless and weightless cuts, shaky cam, just bad camera and editing work in general. Had the same problem with Infinity War where some fights just gave me a headache and were rather unwatchable, plus some had a really bad choreography.
Seriously getting detailed explanation how these stunts are actually done makes the scenes so much more impressive. I have watched The Protector at least a couple of times and just thinking the ATV went broke the glass just makes it seem less impressive. Knowing the exact timing needed to break the glass makes it so much better.

...and he elaborates why. I didn't pay attention before, just sensed this was lame and forgettable, but he got every point there. Also - it's mind boggling one tv series like his punisher work has really unprecedentedly better stunts and fights than this hundred million dollar budget blockbuster.

You should review the fight scene in Captain America Winter Soldier, either the elevator shot, or the highway fight when Bucky pulls a knife. I love those scenes.
Love these videos but feel I have to point out that when you cited Jackie Chan’s referencing Buster Keaton as an influence, the clip of the guy free climbing the building and hanging off the clock was Harold Lloyd (from the film: Safety Last), not Buster Keaton. Lloyds stunts had the added frissance of knowing that his right hand was virtually useless after an accident when a bomb exploded in his hand during a photo shoot. But minor nitpick aside, loving these reacts (as well as VFX reacts) and would love to see more reacts/break downs of old-skool work, both stunts and VFX.
The Ip Man series is probably one of my favorites of all time. The cinematography is great, there’s Donnie Yen, it can help people practice their Cantonese with an interesting topic, the fight scenes are incredible, there are some very good tearjerker scenes, it teaches you history... it’s just awesome.
The fight scenes in that movie were the peak fight scenes of the MCU. Cap v Winter Soldier? Iconic. Elevator fight scene? Legendary. The only one that can top it is the final battle in Endgame.
@@moist_captain But you can see the action really clear despite the cuts, as well as the actor's faces, so you know they are doing the fight themselves. The choreography is pretty complicated, with sequences like flying knee kick, knife flip, spinning kick so I don't blame them for cuts. It's impossible to do the full fight in a single take unless you're an actual martial artist like Jackie Chan.

I will also definitely agree that this fight scene is badly choreographed and/or edited, with the guards waiting for their cues, etc., but it's simply not resolved by flipping around more.
The corridor scenes in The Raid where it’s the protagonist against everyone else, the complexity of choreography is insane

Myztik Yeah ummm John Wick rarely has a guy just beating his meat in the background. That’s why I love those movies, besides the choreography.
@@myztik5716 Even The Raid movies are guilty of this shit.
@@cobaltroguex first one nope, second yes. in first one, you can see in background enemies doing some stuff with other characters.
