    Cats are gentle creatures. When you are depressed or crying because you are sad, have you ever noticed your cat snuggling close to you or staring at you with concern? Cats don't use their whole body to express their emotions like dogs do, but they are gentle creatures that will snuggle up to you when you are sad or depressed. Of course, they are not like dogs, who lick their owners' faces to comfort them or try to cheer them up with their whole body, but they just stay by your side in silence. I'm sure there are many cat lovers who have been saved by the gentle spirit of cats.

      There are some dog-like cats that are more expressive and supportive, mainly orange tabbies (very dog-like) and black cats (very gentle and loving.

    My local family owned pet store has a terracycle bin specifically for Open Farm packaging, hooray! I personally use the bone broths (all three flavors) to rehydrate the freeze-dried Stella & Chewy's recipes and it's such a winning combo with my girl!

    Thank you for reviewing Open Farm! I love Open Farm's Rustic Blend and Bone Broths! I love their sourcing and transparency! And my two cats love all the Rustic Blend varieties! 😻😻
    I would have liked to see less carbs, but their sourcing is more important to me. No meat sourcing from factory farms, no farmed fish. Human grade, not feed grade (which has terrible ingredients). You'll never see meat by-products listed as an ingredient!
    Also, although they use synthetic supplements, the minerals are chelated, making them more bioavailable.
    About cost. Since 3 - 4 oz is usually the recommended daily amount per cat for healthy weight and slightly active cats, you won't need to use the whole container up in one day since it's 5.5 oz. To store the rest, I use two rubber bands around the container and put into a storage bag and into the frig. I have never paid $4 for a container of Open Farm Rustic blend. The regular price at Pet Supplies Plus near me is $3.38 per container. Of course, the price will vary depending on where you live. I imagine that the cost would be higher in California or New York, for instance. I buy it when it's on sale. The last time I purchased, I also had a coupon from Pet Supplies Plus. I paid $23.10 for 12 containers after the discount code was applied. A little less than $2 a container.
    Also, I have seen 15% off on their site and free shipping with a $50 order. I think it's for your first order.
    I have high standards for what I'll feed my cats. Most other canned or similar to canned type foods don't even come close to the quality of Open Farm. Many are feed grade, full of very harmful ingredients, some ingredients from diseased animals. That is allowed in feed grade.
    Our pets are family. Would you feed your children that? Of course not! Then please read labels carefully and learn more about the pet food industry. I recommend watching the "Pet Fooled" documentary on UA-cam.

    I feed my cat 5 times throughout the day, but each time different. She has an 8 hour fast overnight. Churu tube, small amount of Open Farm wild caught salmon kibble (like really small), small can FF, Churu tube, small can FF. She is not being over fed as she doesn’t consume the entire amounts of each can. She needs the extra hydration to prevent struvite crystals. She gets 4.5 ounces of wet total per day. Can’t go away as the pet sitter would be a fortune monitoring her needs.

  • @liveyouryoga

    Thank you! Very in depth review and thanks for doing a more in depth analysis. Vita tried the wet foods, bone broths, and both dry foods. She was not much of a fan of the wet foods due to the texture I think, but she is also a very fussy cat when it comes to wet food. The bone broths at times worked with cat food that had to be refrigerated as it added extra moisture. She is currently on the salmon dry food and she loves it. She gets a very small amount though. Her wet food diet is now about 75 per cent. Their dry food may be expensive but it is cheaper than Fromm. You also get a much bigger bag. The packaging is great. My cat still loves the food even though I have had it since the summer. The higher carbs concerns me though. I really thought it was a little higher in protein. Thanks for reviewing a Canadian brand!

    I’m so glad you reviewed them!!! I was waiting ☺️. I love Open Farm and I think it’s very important to mention that they’re not recyclable in your normal bin. They are partnered with terracycle which is a huge factor in why I love their brand in addition to tracing their ingredients and their sustainability and ethical mindset toward animals 🐈. My little one however decided he doesn’t like their food anymore but he did for a very long time. I’d be interested on your thoughts around Lotus Pet Food (raw) whenever you have a chance. Thanks for your honest opinion and going through the expense and time of the nutritional analysis! I give them a 10 out of 10 for their transparency and dedication to being "better" but cats are obligate carnivores, bottom line. If I'm going to spend $250 a month for my two kitties, I'm going to look for something more species-appropriate.

    The Open Farm wild caught salmon kibble is what I am feeding Vita still. it is a renal diet but it’s not strong enough for a cat with reoccurring struvite crystals. I started adding 1/4 of a teaspoon of Cranimals to a very small amount of kibble to give her kidneys a boost, and she had no accidents for about a week and a half. When I introduced FF salmon (wet) into her diet, that is when I noticed she wasn’t squatting while urinating (a sign she is in discomfort). This happened a couple of times but it’s back to normal today.
    I wish she would go for the entire Open Farm pet line but she hates the texture of the wet. I think I will try the bone broths again with her though.
    Would you consider doing a review on Cranimals powder (cranberry supplement)?
    Thanks

    I tried the Open Farm dry food on our cats and it made both our cats urine ph go to 8 and 9. I don’t know why and they had to be on Hills CD for a while to get it down. No crystals or anything just cystitis from the ph rising. They did love the taste tho. They are both fine now ones back to eating raw and the other can’t eat raw so he’s back to eating Ziwi Peak Cans and Meat Mates.

    • @liveyouryoga
      @liveyouryoga 2 роки тому

      Very interesting regarding higher ph balance. My cat Vita is on the dry and she gets a very small amount. Hard to tell if the food caused it as she also eats wet food to help with hydration. I also give her Churu treats. She had a little bit of blood but it seems to be gone now and she is still on the dry food (very small portion). The Fromm dry food didn't help her urine concentration before. I think what makes the difference is how much wet food she consumes on a daily basis. I aim for 4.5 ounces per day plus the water she drinks. I measure her food using a digital scale.

      @liveyouryoga 2 роки тому

      @@thebutterflylady4904 I have looked at the issue of PH balance and it is supposed to be between 6.6 and 6.8 or something. 9 definitely would increase the risk of struvite crystals. All dry food is horrible for cats including food that is supposed to treat urinary tract health. All the companies do is put dried cranberries in it. So I guess Open Farm is no worse than other dry foods I have tried. Fromm is worse than OF because the carbs are even higher. I have most of a small bag of Fromm left and I am going to have to give it away. Unfortunately Vita would not touch Ziwi Peaks.

    The "open farm grain-free turkey and chicken recipe" made my one cat pee blood and the other frequently urinate 👎👎. After spending over $200 on 4 bags of food and $1,000 at the vet to figure out the cause of this, we will be going back to their old food "beyond grain free Wild-caught whitefish and free run egg recipe"

    While Open Farms' presents itself as more transparently sustainable than most pet food brands, it is not particularly healthy. One needs to keep in mind that their beloved cat is an obligate carnivore that inherently only thrives predominantly on ANIMAL protein and ANIMAL fat, as their natural diet would provide as prey. The only plant-based consumption is the minimal stomach contents of their prey. So. cat food brands that tout their pumpkin, legumes, peas, cranberries, blueberries, and other cost-saving plant-based ingredients and coconut, toxic canola or other plant-derived oils as nutritionally beneficial are deceiving the consumer when, in fact, ANIMAL fat/o[l. of a cat's prey., which is about 1/2 the percentage of the animal protein percentage in a natural obligate feline diet. Open Farms' crude fat% is well over 1/2 the crude protein percentage, while their crude protein percentage for their dry kibble is below 40% (too low) and their wet food is also low in crude protein percentage at a measly 8% when 10% for cat wet food is bare minimum. Remember animal protein/animal fat is what cats naturally thrive on. Grains, have no place in a cat's diet as cats are not inherently designed to assimilate grains and is the cause of IBS/IBD and feline diabetes. That said, Open Farms markets cat formulas with "Ancient Grains" which is poison for your beloved feline companion/s. Synthetic vitamins, also a cheap alternative to naturally sourced nutrients, are toxic, not only to your pet but to you, as well. There are a number of sustainable, RAW food manufacturers, that are most importantly transparent about the ingredients and guaranteed analysis of their pet food. A diverse raw diet, including secreting organs, similar to that which an obligate carnivorous cat would thrive upon, in the wild, inherently, is the rational, prudent and responsible choice, .for the benefit of your pet and yourself. What you spend for high quality raw pet food, which lasts longer and supports your cat's well-being,, you save in no health crisis/chronic illness vet bills. Stella and Chewy's and Honest Kitchen are two of a number of freeze-dried raw pet foods to use for transitioning to raw diet. Smalls and Darwin's brands are two of a a number of raw pet food brands, including those that include whole prey. I highly recommend the YT channel Jess Caticles.as a reputable, informative resource regarding the truth about the pet food market and best, healthiest options and brands for your pet's diet and how to transition your pet to a raw diet. I would encourage you to get a second opinion. Vets are not necessarily nutrition experts, and the fact is that cats do not require grains-did your veterinarian imply that this was a dietary essential? Grain simply isn't. Assuming that it's prepared properly, cat food can be nutritionally complete and balanced without any plant matter at all.

    Recently I became vegetarian and I’ve been feeling weird when I feed my cat since it’s always meat based. I’m aware cats are obligate carnivores, but I’ve come across vegan brands such as Benevo and Evolution. Could you possibly do a review? It would make me feel a lot better about possibly switching over.

    • @jonathonho33
      @jonathonho33 2 роки тому +6

      I wouldn't recommend doing a vegan diet for your cat. Cause by nature they're obligate carnivores and can lead to alot of health issues down the line. Genetically made to eat meat and there is certain nutrients that only meat can provide for carnivores. It is neither ethical (nor legal) to try and make a cat into a “natural” vegetarian, let alone vegan. Unlike humans, cats have specific nutritional requirements - especially for vitamin A, taurine, carnitine and arginine. Cats CANNOT manufacture these, they are not found in significant quantities in plant-based protein. It is however possible to synthetically supplement these nutrients using chemically engineered versions. However, it is worth remembering that there are significant environmental consequences to the complex organic chemistry needed to make these. Also, remember that even a short-term deficiency is potentially fatal.. so overall just stick with meat based diet if you truly want what's best for your cat.

    • @mirandaduffy4367

      @@jonathonho33agreed. A human can tolerate a 100% plant based diet whereas cats cannot, they are a completely different species and literally need meat protein in order to thrive.

    Thanks for this review! This was MUCH better than the dog food reviews I’ve seen for them posted by people. One of which was by a vet who pushes Hills and was trying to degrade this food. That was all I could find just about. I’m getting this for my dog but I feel like the review of their cat food gives you an idea of their dog foods quality. I fed Orijen for years until Mars bought them and since they took over she’d gotten red stains in her hair which can be caused by things in their diet. So I’m being forced to switch her. Hoping this will be an improvement.
