You can buy the wood litter at a tractor supply or feed store. It's equine pellets sold in a 40 pound bag. Really inexpensive. It is low dust. It is not clumpable and needs to be changed at least once a day. This is the kind of litter we use at the shelter where I volunteer.

I love it and store it in those hard plastic kitty litter tubs. If you don't have any, chances are your cat friends have extras. It helps keep it dry and makes it easier to store/carry. One bag fills up two tubs.

I used that mixed with feeling pine. I adopted 6yo cat and he didn't like standing in it. Then I switched to sustainably yours. I don't have any type of smell so I wanted something more comfortable for my cat and had better odor control. The tracking is a pain but I have to vacuum daily any way. Never heard of the ones you listed after that. It sure would be nice to lower costs but not if it's going to make my home more smelly. I like company!

Good video. Corn and wheat? Sounds like Hill's cat food. LOL I use A&H Multi-cat. It is like fine sand. The cats like it, I like it. A local market has it $10.99 for 20 lbs. It is often on sale for $8.99. Feeding my cats a mostly homemade/raw diet means very little smell from the litter box. Saying litter is flushable, does not mean it is. Where I live it is not recommended.

I use corn, and found it the best for my cat. It lasts a long time, keeps no odor at all, and I generally scoop it out every day or so, so it's easy and there's not much to do. It generally lasts at least several weeks or even a month until it starts to smell, as long as I refill the amount I take out. My cat has been very happy with it. But I was interested to know about the other cat litter options.

@@cricketcrocker Good advice. I just bought a bag of "Feline pine" for almost $20 bucks and it's wood pellets like the Tractor Supply stuff for $8. It's hard to scoop as it will not sift thru the scooper. Plain sawdust NOT pelletized would be my choice if I could get it.

I have multiple cats. One is diabetic and pees a river. So tight clumping is necessary.
Clay turns into MUD. Awful to clean. But I can't afford a robotic box. So I had to experiment. Now, I am a litter and litter box connoisseur 🧐
I have 3 cats that stink the entire house when they poo.
Thing that seems to work best for me is CATS PRIDE clumping.
I keep a large bag of cheaper litter for topping off.
Plus....the thing that i recently discovered is PROBIOTIC additive. I have 5 litter boxes so 2 - $8 BAGS was needed. Worth every penny. BIG DIFFERENCE in stank control! Its a silicate with probiotics. And I use jumbo sized pan liners with a dusting of BAKING SODA.
In case of leaks, I like to use PEE PADS placed on the bottom the the box. Then the bags.
    Next the baking soda.
    Then litter.
    Then probiotics.
    Re: the liners.....
Yeah, they poke some holes, but not a big problem.
I use clamps on all 4 corners to keep them secure (I have 2 "diggers")
    And thats my routine.
Hope I was of some help to someone.😊

After trying many kinds of finer ground litter, I had to switch to pellet style litter 5 years ago because all the finer ones made one of my cats constantly sneeze and her eyes water. I tried the Breeze system, paper pellets, tofu pellets, and wood pellets. With the paper ones, I couldn't find all the smelly urine-soaked paper, so I had to throw it all out every few days. The tofu pellets didn't clump very well, so it also got completely changed out every few days. The Breeze pellets were a nice size and had no pointy edges but they were very expensive and difficult to get in Canada (this was 5 years ago). Plus, it incorporates a pee pad because the pellets don't absorb liquid, which is another expense.
I finally settled on wood pellets. I don't like that the edges are somewhat jagged but my cats use it without any issues (no injuries). It also has a strong wood smell when you first fill the box but that disappears after a couple of days and my cats don't seem bothered by it. I actually buy ones marketed for wood stoves because they're much cheaper than ones sold specifically for animal use. I just check the website to make sure they're safe for litter boxes. It controls urine smells very well because the pellets disintegrate into sawdust when wet and then dry out and fall to the bottom of the box. With poop smells, it depends on if they bury it enough. I use a sifting litter box and it takes less than 5 minutes to sift 3 boxes. Wood pellet litter isn't perfect but no litter is and it works well for my cats, especially the one. No more sneezing and watery eyes for her.

I’m a big fan of pine pellets with a sifting litter box. The pee that break down the pellets and go to the bottom and leaves no smell. And the poop is easily discarded. Cost effective, no dust and no perfumes.
The only drawback was that I had to slowly introduce it to my cat. Took about 3 weeks but after that she has no complaints. 😊

Corn can be very nasty to cats. We tried corn litter for one day. Even though it triggered an ER visit, it helped us figure out corn (useless food filler) was the cause of all her other health issues (bulemia which eventually led to no teeth, corn cobbing her fur, etc).

@@gloriahoulne1034 Gnawing off her fur until it was bald due to how itchy it felt. Most of her thighs and underside/abdomen were smooth or felt like stubble when it started growing back. She also scratched herself all the time. That was caused by the corn/grain in her food. When she tried to use a littler box with corn litter, it was magnified exponentially.
(btw, I think corn can't be digested by cats anyway. Best-case is that it is only a waste of your money and passes through your cat with no nutritional value.)

Price vs weight is not a good way to compare cost. Rather, cost vs volume is a better indicator. Whether you use clay or whatever litter, you would fill your box up to the same level, producing the same volume. So clay litter would weigh a lot more than grass. Personally, I use both clay and wood, with clay being in the garage and wood for the indoors. The wood litter weighs much much less. The cat prefers the clay litter by far.

  • @toddwinnick170

I have had cats for many years and have used clay, clumping clay, paper, wood, and currently using corn litter. I initially switched from clay to wood because I found clay to be poor on odor control. Wood was excellent for odor control, but not good for tracking and sometimes uncomfortable for my cats paws. Paper was terrible for odor control, and thus I only tried it for a short period of time. I have been using corn for the last several years and have been very happy with it. There is never any ammonia smell, and it is easy to flush. So as you can see, I have several points of disagreement with this video. I think the one I’ll be most interested in possibly trying in the future is pea husk.

I prefer the silica crystals over clay. True, they are pricey but worth it. With the clumping litter, one of my two cats loves to bury the bejesus out of his waste which breaks up the clumps of pee. I believe that the litter only clumps up once. After some time, the clumping litter acts more and more like the bargain clay litter. The crystals act as a desiccant which mummifies the poops rendering them well... odorless like a mummy. With two cats, two bags of Fresh Step Crystals in a jumbo litter box can last a month between changes. I edited this to include the tracking us very low compared to the clumping litter with it tiny granules.

I'm in the UK and use Cat's Best organic clumping wood litter. It's one of the most expensive litters available here but it lasts a long time, covers smell really well and has minimal dust. My cats really like it as well, which is obviously the most important thing! The only downside is because the pieces are so small it does track EVERYWHERE

I would love if you could break down what they claim the can do or what they are for.
Especially ARM & HAMMER, TIDY CAT and CATS PRIDE.
They advertise: clumping, tight clumping, non-clump, 20% lightweight, 50% lightweight, multi cat, 10 day odor, baking soda, easy slide, unscented, scented, premium .... my head hurts shopping for litter. 😵‍💫

I offer our 3 cats clay and grass. The grass is much softer on their feet and even though it tracks, it's not as hard on my feet when I step on it. They do prefer clay but I am concerned about the dust. I did try walnut shell but the smell was overpowering for me so I can't imagine what it would do for the cats. I packed it off without even keeping it for a try. Also, I didn't like the way it seemed to stain the litter pan. Thanks for this very informative review; it was very helpful.

The reason wood litter has such a small market share on Chewy is probably because most of us who use it buy the huge bags of kiln dried pellets from the local feed store! Sometimes our rescue has the officially "cat litter" wood products donated and there's truly no difference.
We find that wood pellets cover the urine smell better than clay but of course, they do nothing for the poo.

    • @toddwinnick170
      @toddwinnick170 Місяць тому +1

I think that is really true, as I always bought my pine/wood litter at the feed store because it was the best value. And to your point about poop, nothing absorbs poop smell. The only thing that works is removing it as as soon as possible.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT

One cat pooped in an empty litter box I had sitting near their other boxes rather than use the pellet litter. I do still have 2 litter boxes with the pellets because one of my cat will occasionally use it to pee in

  • @lucyloo8965
    @lucyloo8965 23 дні тому

We use paper cat litter. Its low tracking, and when it does track, its easy to clean up with a broom instead of little sand/clay pieces everywhere! When paper litter has been used, it swells and gets darker so its easy to tell the parts that need to be removed. My cats seem to like it. It doesn't seem to do much for lowering smell, but if you pair it with arm&hammer powder, it is great!

Sarah, I thank you so much for this video. Please see health issue below I just want to add some thing to the information for the corn/cassava type cap litters.
I have an oriental shorthair kitten he is around seven months of age. He has exhibited asthma type allergies to the grass cat gravel that I really like. So I thought I would change off to sustainably yours the one you pictured in your video. I totally agree with you on the dust that seems to go everywhere not from them going to bathroom, but from tracking it out in their feet. That being said, I had a problem with my oriental shorthair with switching his litter to Sustainably Yours Multi Cat. He suddenly became constipated, and would cry, and his diet had not changed at all. I was seriously getting ready to have the vet do all kinds of tests to figure out why he was so constipated, no matter how much he ate and how he would just cry before trying to go to the bathroom and not being able to. He finally passed a hard stool, and my vet had said to capture it so I did in a Ziploc. Much to my surprise I saw the gravel in his stool, so I pulled it apart in the bag and was packed with that aka fine yellow dust inside it. I was explaining this to A friend of mine before going into the vet the next day and we thought oh my gosh this kitty litter is a starch and because it’s such a fine dust it gets on his coat and stays on his paws, and he licks it all off, and he’s constipated from the very kitty litter he’s trying to go to the bathroom in. I mediately switched kitty litter and within a couple days back on the grass gravel. He was fine and was able to go to the bathroom and I was so relieved. I saved myself a lot of vet bills too and happy to see he wasn’t in pain anymore. So in my long story, please, please mention in your videos that this could be a very issue for other peoples cats and their health going forward. I see that sustainably yours now has a thicker density to their product. Maybe they know this is an issue.
Thank you for all you do and I hope I can save someone’s kitty from this issue going forward.

People say you can go up to a month before changing but that doesn't seem to be the case unless it's just a color changing thing and not that it's not still effective. Can anyone confirm this?

$1.06 per pound for clay? Nonsense. The price for special kitty litter at Walmart April 2024 is $5.48 for 20 pounds which is less than 30 cents a pound. Accordingly nothing in this article is reliably informative. Find some sand that's free, cats like it 100% and it's environmentally neutral. Just dump it in the garden.
