    I hope you make a video all about phosphorus. When I look at cat food labels I don’t see a single one with a label that says low phosphorus. So I hope you educate us on that topic.

      Royal Canin has an age 12+ that is low in Phosphorus. I have a cat with kidney disease now and I researched it . Cost as much as veterinarian diet, I do both of those to supplement the veterinarian one as he likes it both

    for the tuna flakes, you can usually find a HUGE bag at asian markets for way cheaper, just make sure there’s no other added ingredients

    I use Stella & Chewy freeze dried products as a topper when my cat is being picky. Just 1/2 a pellet is usually enough to turn his yuck into yum. I also use them for clicker training because he will do anything for them, just breaking off a piece before I ask him to do something.

    About bone broth: You can get bones for VERY cheap at a butcher shop, ask him to open them to expose marrow and simmer them in water for 8-12 hours, don't add anything else than the bones to the water. Strain that and you have bone broth for at least 10 times less the price. Yes it takes some time, but you don't have to be looking at the broth all the time, just make sure you top it off with more water if level gets too low. You can freeze the broth after and use it for a long time, just don't keep it in the fridge for long as the lack of salt makes it very appealing to bacteria. I find open farm broth to be highly overpriced for what it really is.

      Just get Nutrional Yeast unforttied or the one that isn’t it’s for human consumption so you sprinkle on your things it’s cheap and delicious for your cat my cats love it eat fast their food. Bone broth just put bones first take off beef or chicken don’t add seasonings or salt. Bones can be cooked slow cooker 2 or 3 days strain use it costs pennies.

    I’ve given my cat fortiflora since she was a picky kitten and wasn’t a great eater. She’s now almost 9 and I still sprinkle it on her wet and dry food. Def not cheap, I pay 46CAD a box, but she’s rarely had any digestive issues besides a random puke on occasion and diarrhea twice in her life. Whatever keeps her healthy!

      Our cat has food allergies and is also allergic to something in the Forti Flora. We have to use Proviable instead when she needs it. Proviable doesn't have any flavoring, is tasteless and works great when she needs it.

      I bought some and I am afraid to give it to my cats. They seem so big, like they won't be able to chew it and it will get stuck or something. Do cats eat them just fine? Mine weren't too interested and I didn't encourage it seeing as how big and thin the flakes are.

    I believe in one of your earlier videos you mentioned that toppers as one of the fastest growing trends in the cat food industry. It almost feels to me like it's a luxury treat item. I use them sparingly, alternating between Weruva BFF OMG Gravy & Tiki Cat Broth for the sole purpose, as you demonstrated, to add moisture and increase hydration in my cat's diet. I know you have recommended those salmon bonito flakes before, but cost wise, they sure are the caviar of cat toppers! 😀

  • @jcc9925
    @jcc9925 Рік тому +15

    Thanks for all these great videos!! I think with your new experience with kindney disease, food and diet are super important topics. I learned the hard way after 2 decades with my awesome cat that feeding him dry food was a contributing factor in poor heath. The animal food companies (and many Vets) sold us a lie about how awesome and easy dry food is for our felines. It's easy but since cats aren't designed to find and drink water, they have to get their daily intake of moisture in their food and creative ways to get your cat to want to drink more. These moisture rich food toppers are so important, as well as getting a water fountain that cats love to drink from, or even running water in your sink. From the time my kitten first saw the vet the vet recommended me a prescription dry food to help with his dental issues even though at 3 months he does not have dental issues. It was a clever way yo get a monthly stream of income for nearly 20-years. I'm not saying all vets do this but asking around I do see it too often. About 10-years ago I saw feline experts who most either were top vets in their field and/or were teaching future veterinarians in college who said cats must start eating wet foods. When I confirmed this with a long time friend who is a vet from the top university in the US, I was devastated and felt I let my beloved cat down. That won't happen again.

      My Munch will only eat dry food even with only 4 teeth in his mouth. Even though I keep fresh water in his bowl I keep catching him drinking from the toilet. It's a never ending battle.

    • @honeyrococo
      @honeyrococo Рік тому +7

      Yes, it breaks my heart that vets even sell dry foods “designed to treat kidney problems” when it is the dry food that caused the kidney problems. Not to mention the dry foods have grains and rice and wheat and barley that cats can’t digest which gets stuck on their teeth like Cap’n Crunch which causes the dental problems the dry food is purported to clean off. Since when did eating crunchy dry Doritos clean human teeth? Cats should eat meat. I even add a little water to my cat’s meat wet food just to make sure she gets enough. Dry pet foods sold by vets are what OxyContin is to US doctors.

      @emc129 Our current cat, last cat living out of seven, will only eat dry food. She has food allergies and is on prescription food. We've tried that canned version but she won't touch it. Unfortunately, we can't offer her others. Tried something similar to what she eats but she immediately broke out.

    I use Tikki Cat toppers, but will have to rethink using them. I feed a colony of Community Cats and I use Zoup! Bone Broth and shredded chicken on their wet food. Zoup! is perfectly safe for cats as it has no onion, garlic, or other added seasonings. You can also use nutritional yeast for picky eaters. I absolutely love Forti Flora. I have a cat with Feline Aids and several others in the colony with health issues and it seems to help. One of my colony cats has pododermatitis and he gets Duralactin on his food.

    Fortiflora works well for my older cats with CKD for a short time. I also find that I don't need to add a whole pack to their food for them to eat it. I can usually just do a heavy dusting of it for a flavor enhancer. But like anything else with my cats, nothing works after a few days. I have to stop using it for a few weeks and then go back to it. Looking forward to adding some of these to my ever growing collection.
    My cats won't touch any shredded foods. None, at all

    Fortiflora has really helped my kitty with digestive issues. I also like Inaba Churu lickable treats as they have limited ingredients and are irresistible to cats. Churu being a paste can be used either as a topper on food or as a treat. Also works for giving medications to cats.

    I use the fortiflora daily with my two cats however I do a sprinkling to cover their kibble instead of dumping the whole packet just to spread my dollar further. Yes it would take longer to reap the benefits but my cats have had no issues in a while. If for some reason they do experience digestive issues, I’ll aim to use the whole packet for a couple of days until symptoms subside then resume back to maintenance (a fine coat of the probiotic).

    I have two picky cats, finding something they both like to eat means many different cans of different food to buy and feed each one of them. But they both agree on the Tiki Cat toppers, so that's what they get in addition to their dry food. If they won't eat it, it doesn't matter how good it is for them :)

    Our 11-month-old kittens love Feline Natural lamb feast and lamb and salmon. We buy it either from chewy when they have it or directly from Feline Natural. The first time we got it from the company they included several large packets of freeze dried food with directions to feed it on its own or sprinkle it on their wet food.
    I tried freeze dried food once when they were younger and they didn't seem to like it. I didn't think they would like this either but they do. They absolutely love a little bit of any flavor of the freeze dried food sprinkled on their wet food. One of them loves it so much that he tries to eat his brother's after he finishes his.
    The texture is different than rehydrating freeze dried food, I'm not sure if it was the texture or consistency that they didn't like but they love this and I'm glad. I want to try one or two of these other options. Mallory is right, it is for us because it makes us feel that we are doing more for our cats. That's okay though we feel good and our cats are happy. That's a win-win.

    Hey great video! As far as toppers, we had to try Simply Nourish Savory Sauce as we are over the road truck drivers out for three months at a time. Our cat started showing slight signs of problems urinating. I was a vet technician for 16 years in the dark ages lol....anyway tried to get a vet to look at him at Pet Smart ( we had only 30 minutes until we had to get on the road) they refused without an appointment. Well being we were out of state, etc. and had to leave I needed to hydrate the cat. He normally eats only canned Merricks as I've seen my share of FUS in the decades I worked. But he occasionally will get in the dogs dry food and we give him some dry treats. Never again! He adored the sauce on top of the wet food and I super hydrated him! We narrowly escaped as he was able to urinate the next day. He's been fine so far. So occasionally it might work for that!

    I've always viewed FortiFlora as a medicine of sorts, thank you for pointing it out that it can be used as a topper for its flavor as well. i'll use it more regularly with my cat. I also use a product called Brutus Bone Broth for Dogs (although their website says it can be given to cats, too, and is made from human-grade ingredients.) Some days my cat seems to enjoy it, others not so much; extremely finicky eater. $6.49 for a 32-oz box, the unused portion of which must be discarded 30 days after the package is opened. Thank you for the information in this video!

    We do Fortiflora on Sundays just as an added benefit, so total cost isn't that much of a concern,
    and it has a strong "meat" smell that makes them love it as a topper.
    We've been going thru the Bonita flakes somewhat slowly, but they seem to enjoy it when we do give it to them.
    One of the cats is no longer getting it, because we've discovered that our little girl has a hyperthyroid problem.
    She will become radioactive starting this Monday for a couple of weeks, but no fish flakes ... for now.
    I wanted to mention that I got an unexpected surprise when I ordered from a place called "Only Natural Pet."
    I think they were just trying to get me interested in more products from them, but they offered me THREE 7oz.
    toppers called "Superfood Sauce" - for FREE(!?!) - which I haven't tried yet.
    Yes, you would think a small sample kind of tucked into your order, but these was enough to last a good long time.
    Anyway, I can't tell you if it's any good or not, but it was a surprise. We might try it tonight for the first time.
    Thank you Mallory. Great catching that Tiki Cat idea.

    I love your videos, they’re really helpful when trying to pick things out for my cats. One of my cats is super picky and after like 3 years with our current fountain waterer, he apparently no longer likes it lol. I come home from work everyday to a giant puddle now so it’s time to get a different one. He REALLY wants to drink from the faucet but obviously I can’t just leave that running. On Chewy I saw an interesting fountain, the Petdiary Spaceship fountain or whatever but it has NO reviews. Like NONE. It’s supposed to have a UV light to sanitize the water and an adjustable spout, all this fancy stuff. But since there aren’t any reviews I’m hesitant to buy it. Have you seen it? I know you’ve reviewed other fountains but this one seems like it must be new for it to have no reviews at all yet. It’s very cute, the water comes out of a tiny spaceship hahaha.

I know it's pretty new and the company's doing a promotion where they're reimbursing customers who buy a bag so I'm curious to see how you feel about their digestive, heart, and probiotics supplements.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Рік тому +2

      Hey Jemma, that's a good question. Yummers looks pretty good, though I saw some ingredients that made me go "hmmm". Diatomaceous earth, for instance, is a popular but very questionable "remedy" for intestinal parasites, and while digestive benefits have been described anecdotally, there's no real evidence that it works in this way. It's safe, but I'm not sure why it would be included so prominently in a cat food supplement. I also noticed that microalgae oil is used instead of a fish oil, green-lipped mussels, or other animal-derived source in their skin & coat recipe. It does seem that cats can utilize the EPA and DHA from this ingredient, but I'm curious about why it was chosen. Other than those two little questions, their products look good! I like that they're meat-based, and it's good that they're using a strain of bacteria that's been demonstrated to be effective in cats, plus providing guaranteed amounts of it. @@AllAboutCatsYT Thanks for your reply! The diatomaceous earth certainly threw me off as well since I've only encountered it in fertilizers I use for my plants. I'm going to keep an eye out on the company and I super appreciate your quick response ☺

    I have a "smell" cat. She first smells the food and decides to not eat it. The other cats gobble the food down so I know the food is good. If the cat dies tough sh...t. I've tried everything.

    I have been trying lots of things to get my cat to like wet mixed with dried since I can't afford a wet-diet only. I am feeding her Carna4 since its ingredients are awesome but I am concerned about her UTIs.

    For some reason my cat does not like the purina forti flora. It’s like she can tell that I snuck into her food. Ion gut tonic for pets has helped her to stop throwing up so much. I got it on Amazon. She had IBD.

    I give my cat human food sometimes whether it be chicken,shrimp, ham, Tillamook vanilla bean ice cream anyone else do this?

    • @hallaloth3112
      @hallaloth3112 Рік тому +2

      Honestly, wouldn't recommend the ice cream since cats are lactose intolerant. Any of the proteins as long as they are unseasoned are good for them. Our boys get nibbles of whatever I happen to be cooking for dinner most nights. If We're down to the last chicken breast I'll cook it for them to use as treats.

    I wish looking up cat food via price per calorie was normal. It’s so hard to find wet cat food that is affordable when you factor in how many cans you have to feed a day. A 5.5oz can might be anywhere between barely 100 to approaching 200calories! Same goes for smaller cans. Figuring out which ones are truly affordable is so hard.

      I've learned that the most affordable cat food is the one that will best keep them out of the vet's office in the future.

    i still don’t really get the point of most toppers. I have 2 4 month old kittens and just add water + wet food to their kibble. The only ones that interest me are the raw/organ meat toppers because I’m still uncomfortable with raw feeding but I do wanna incorporate it a bit into their diets.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  Рік тому +1

      Sounds like you get it to me! Water, wet food, and perhaps some raw food are all perfect toppers.

    I dunno. Maybe just buying meat scraps (especially beef) from a butcher shop would do the trick for less money.

    • @hallaloth3112
      @hallaloth3112 Рік тому +2

      Or just careful trimmings from your own dinner scraps. But then, our boys are good eaters for the most part.

    • @sirdarklust
      @sirdarklust Рік тому +1

      @@hallaloth3112 I was talking in general, and not just with eating issues. I used to always save a bit of my raw beef for the kitty.before I would prepare it (i.e season or cook). It would be a treat for him, instead of unhealthy cat treats. He loved his ground beef or diced up skirt steak treat.
