  • Quick video I made on the fly whilst repairing a Sonos Playbar that wouldn't power on. Turns out after replacing some parts on the PSU it's now up and running - check the video for details on components replaced, and testing tips.
    FET = Toshiba TK6A65D, RS part 8962420
    FUSE = RS part 2260585
    Primary Cap = RS Part 7260754
    PWM Control IC = ON Semiconductor FAN6300HMY, RS Part 7396074

    Glad I found this. Rather than try to repair the PSU I just cut the PCB in half just to the left of the mains inlet, sanded the traces to remove the copper mask, soldered +ve to the top and ground to the bottom. Bought a 6a adjustable PSU from Amazon, set it to 16v and hooked it up. Works perfectly. If the PSU fails no need to rip it all apart again.

    My Sonos playbar was not powering up and I was fortunate enough to find this video. On mine the PET had blown as you could see a tiny burn mark on it. Anyway I changed that, capacitors/fuse and bridge rectifier.....I happy to say it's all fixed and running again. I can't thank you enough for the info you provided here as I wouldn't have been able to fix it without this. Saved me a fortune and saved the planet too. Well done.

    Thank you Ohmslaw. Although my knowledge of electronics is not enough to understand everything you explain, your videos did help to test the board and find what was wrong: one of the wires of the first filter coil (capacitor choke) was broken. Easy fix. The most complicated part of the repair is putting everything back together again 🙂

    Great video and explanation. Just repaired mine. Blown was the rectifier in front of the 2 caps, part KBU606. This component is easy to check with an multimeter directly on the board. If blown, it creates a short circuit. Replaced with a rectifier taken from a PC power supply with higher value.

    Great tip with the power supply instead of AC input. I was afraid to play with power supplies. Used a serial bulb circuit but of course it's still dangerous. Your way is great, I love it. Thank you ♥

    THANKS for the video and the rest who commented! Found one Playbar for 800 Danis krone (~ 120 USD) at the local second hand marked that didn't turn on and risked buying it... best decision ever! Managed to fix it by replacing the fuse and the bridge rectifier (one with a bigger value, hopefully it will not blow again) :)

      Marian Laza Hej. Jeg står med en død Sonos Playbar og jeg har en mistanke om at det er strømforsyningen. Jeg har ingen forstand på elektronik, men kan se at du har forstand på det 😀 Ville du være interesseret i at kigge på den? Jeg skal selvfølgelig nok betale dig for ulejligheden.

      @@christiangrnbkjrgensen6328 The thing is that I was lucky with mine because only the fuse and the rectifier was bad, both of them really easy to check and replace. It was one thing to work on mine but unfortunately I don't have training in this field and because of that I can't guaranty that I'll be able to fix it so I prefer not to get involved in this. Here you can find some more information to get you started: www.reddit.com/r/sonos/comments/c31n6s/starting_point_in_repairing_a_dead_not_powering/

    My playbar quit abruptly. I watched Part 1 and 2 and ordered the FET, Fuse, Primary Cap and PWM Control IC. As I read the comments, some had had bridge rectifier blow so I will order that. I have no idea what I'm doing so if everything goes OK, I'll put the parts in and see if it powers on!

    how to remove powerboard?

  • @ryanmelander8039
    @ryanmelander8039 Рік тому +1

    Is it possibly to bypass the AC portion of the power supply and power the device using DC?

    • @6581punk
      @6581punk 6 днів тому

      Yep. Connect 16v to the points shown in the video. Or do what I did and cut the PCB in half and solder wires to the top and bottom thick traces (top is positive, underneath is ground). Then remove the label on the read ports, remove three tiny screws and you can remove the mains jack (cut the wires first). You can then run wires out the back or fit a DC jack.

    Great video Ohmslaw. I picked up a non working playbar and have fixed by replacing the fuse and the rectifier with a higher rated 10A 1000v part. However, the power supply is noisy, (whine, chirp etc). I hope it is the capacitors so I've ordered some high quality rubycon caps to replace the stock Jackon ones. I'm curious about your comment on installing 3 capacitors instead of 2. Could you expand on why this is better? Won't it negatively affect the circuit? I just wonder why Sonos would leave a blank on the PCB. Finally, if the caps don't sort out the noise from the power supply, what would be my next course of action? Coils look OK and they are dampened with plenty of glue/epoxy. Maybe the transformer is to blame? Many thanks!

    Hi mate, thx for the video. Can you really test a switching power supply with dc input? My problem is, i don't won't to buy a galvanically isolated AC power suppy to test a switching power supply at home (but don't wan't to work on the main directly).

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret Рік тому +2

      The first thing happening in a switch mode is that AC is rectified to DC perhaps with a little filtering to get a nicer load on the AC kurve. So unless there's something really special about you PSU that expects and uses AC for something then yes you can power it using DC instead.
