Sonos Connect:Amp Repair / Fuse Replacement

  • *I am unable to work on your Sonos unfortunately. This video is the best I can offer*
    This particular Sonos Connect:Amp (CTAZPUS1) was sent to me with a 'no power' fault. After confirming the problem I found that the fuse was the only part that had failed. Fortunately I did not have to tangle with the heatsink clips from hell. There was a broken piece on the plastic bottom and I had a small but solved issue with a wifi connector. All of this is addressed in the video.
    The fuse is a 5amp 250V. I used an AGC fuse in place of the round fuse. They work the same.
    If you have any questions, feel free to post them below. Thanks for watching
    FYI, Unfortunately I am unable to take in Sonos amps for repair. The lack of parts availability and service info is crippling. Only power issues seem to be cost effective to repair. Low volume, no sound, are beyond the ability to repair with the info that is available.

    The SONOS Logo belongs to the front as shown in the first shots, and when he is done the logo it on the back where the connectors are. What a great job, why even screw it together just throw in the parts as you like and be done with it.

      Oh man. You sure told me. I'll just take the video down then.good job missing where I said I fixed that after the fact. I figured real technicians would watch for the actual technical part. Not some pointlessly pedantic comments 😂😂Where is your sonos video?😂😂😂

      @FixitFrank  Рік тому

      It's a quick blow. There is a thermistor for inrush limiting. It's one of those small round littelfuse brand fuses.

    Fixit Frank, thanks! I have a regular connect that was struck by lightning supposedly several years ago and does not power up. I gently opened it up like you did and really couldn’t get to the fuse. If you want to try to fix another one, let me know! Thanks again!

    Hi Frank!
    Love your vids!
    I dabble with electronics and especially broken Sonos equipment. Managed to fix quite a few of them. What I’m interested in is your short (bulb) tester. How do you wire that one up? Is it in series with the outlet or how do you do it. Can’t seem to figure it out. I would be very happy if you would tell me how to make my own.
    Thanks again for a great channel!

    • @FixitFrank

      imgur.com/a/XAPYf7v Here you go! It is that simple. I learned about this many-many years ago when I learned about repairing amplifiers. When the device has a short, the light bulb takes the load and minimizes the damage to the device. I use different value light bulbs depending on the device. Large power supplies, I use a few 100W bulbs in parallel. The only thing you need to do is make sure the light bulb is before the device in the circuit. That way the current is limited if the device is shorted.

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately not 'good' advice. I'd drop the $30 and get a cheap soldering kit from Amazon. Its really your only safe option. you could try and wedge something on the pins but on the line side, you are asking for a fire hazard and possible electrocution hazard.

    How would I fix a subwoofer jack? It broke off because someone tripped on the cable and yanked it out

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      You would need to remove the top of the casing, and re-solder a new jack or maybe an extension wire to a jack. If function is your only goal(Aside from making it look factory again) you might be able to solder to the exposed contacts through the back. Here is a picture of the inside. I marked the subwoofer jack. imgur.com/a/MrSTaN3

      I'm sorry. As much as I would love to help, I am not working on these anymore. Sonos has made it very hard to find parts and impossible to get service info. The amount I would have to charge for troubleshooting and repair(due to the hours spent) would be unfair.

    Hi, maybe you or others can help. My amp's white indicator light comes on when power is applied but only for few seconds then goes off and nothing works . I can see LAN port diodes blinking that is all ... I followed your video and checked all power points and all seems OK ...any idea?. Thanks in advance

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      If check the regulator on the 'brain board's. It's the board with the wifi chip. There is a regulator (little fella) to the right side, behind the wifi card. I'd see if you have the voltage there. It's possible you had a failure in one of the ram chips under the metal shielding. Ive had poor luck repairing those with that problem. If you can do their trade up program, I would.

Broker wire and black under heatshrink. Very odd to see one of these gone. Any idea what replacement part this would be? Thanks

      Are you in the states? I've got some scrap units. However I will warn you. These are a PAIN to repair. I stopped taking them in due to the weirdness and lack of parts info. I agree that its weird to see it fail. Check the inrush current limiter for a short and the switching FETS by the primary inductor.

      Thanks, I’m based in the UK.
      The checked the FETs and diodes and the seem ok. I am wondering if there was an issue with the coil in the first place as a piece about 5mm from the solder joint on pcb as broken. What I don’t understand is it looks burt black but even if coil shorts it is in series so would not expect problem other than impedance changing. I am trying to figure out inductance and current rating but no markings give it away. Bit sure how critical value will be if I took a guess?

      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      oh thats a bummer. I would be happy to give you any scrap parts I have if that ever is something you need.

    • @-J_M-
      @-J_M- 3 роки тому

      FixitFrank . I managed to fix the unit by unwrapping one turn and resoldering back into the board (I figure I less turn would not be a major issue). You were right, what a PAIN getting the coil back in ... thanks again for you great video as without it I would not have spent the time figuring out the problem 👍

    Hey, Frank....I dropped one of these on the floor from about three feet and now it won’t power on....can you fix it?

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  3 роки тому

      It's a tough call. Most likely it cracked the main PCB. Those PCBs are multi-layers so if it cracked an internal trace, its not repairable. Sonos wont give any service info out and parts (aside from the normal power parts) are impossible to find. Plus they are trying to kill off the Connect Amps with that rebate program. I really want to say , I could fix it but at this point, I have stopped taking in Sonos amps because of the lack or available info and possibility that they are not going to work at all in the near future(as per Sonos).
      You might want to take the chance and pop the covers off. Maybe its something simple? I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

    • @FixitFrank

      I have not worked on that chassis but I would be suspicious of the low voltage supply. Look for bad solder near the mosfets and bloated/leaky capacitors.

    Hi!! I have a sonos connect amp and it does not work, I have tried everything, cable disconnected for a long time, factory reset, connect with ethernet cable, and nothing ... still with the white light blinking forever .. Question: It will be a hardware problem or software ?? How can I solve my lack of connection? thanks!!

    • @FixitFrank
      @FixitFrank  4 роки тому

      That's tough. I'd try a factory reset and an Ethernet cable to your router. Some of the new auto switching wifi routers are a pain to connect to. Try using the Ethernet wire and see how that works.

    • @FixitFrank

      That's a tough one. I have not been working on these much lately because of the lack of parts and information. To me it sounds like there is a network controller problem. That board is not easy to work on. The only repairs I have been successful with are some basic power failure issues. This flashing light says it needs an ip address. That tells me something is wrong with the network circuit. That is out of my area of understanding unfortunately. I'm sorry I wish I had better info for you.

Both are ok. I unplugged, them plugged in the Sonos and went to system and adjusted Connect volume to 100% but still no output. At one point I had a stereo receiver and the Connect wired to the same speakers but never had both on at once. Do you think I blew out the Connect amp circuit or should I test or try something else? Thanks.
