So we got this Russell Hobbs 3-in-1 Panini, Grill, Griddle. It has a design problem and I have made this video to highlight it! It gets way, way, too hot. There are no settings for the thermostat, so it maybe ok for a steak, but just too hot for anything with bread. Glad I found this. Rather than try to repair the PSU I just cut the PCB in half just to the left of the mains inlet, sanded the traces to remove the copper mask, soldered +ve to the top and ground to the bottom. Bought a 6a adjustable PSU from Amazon, set it to 16v and hooked it up. Works perfectly. If the PSU fails no need to rip it all apart again.

    Hello. As a follow up - replacing with a new pump fixed my problem after trying so many other tips. Another contributor suggested if the pump sounded constipated - replace the pump. Grateful both your suggestions worked. Did you reapply hot glue to the pump as on the original? The fit seemed very tight to me. Thanks.

    Thank you Ohmslaw. Although my knowledge of electronics is not enough to understand everything you explain, your videos did help to test the board and find what was wrong: one of the wires of the first filter coil (capacitor choke) was broken. Easy fix. The most complicated part of the repair is putting everything back together again 🙂

    So I have mine apart and one of the big capacitors blew. It looks like it sprayed across toward the rectifier with the heat sink and melted a small component. I don’t know what is was and the motherboard material is eroded a bit. Also the little black square thing has a hole in it. I don’t know what this part is either. Looks like screwed.

    My playbar quit abruptly. I watched Part 1 and 2 and ordered the FET, Fuse, Primary Cap and PWM Control IC. As I read the comments, some had had bridge rectifier blow so I will order that. I have no idea what I'm doing so if everything goes OK, I'll put the parts in and see if it powers on!

    Is it possibly to bypass the AC portion of the power supply and power the device using DC?

    • @6581punk
      @6581punk 6 днів тому

      Yep. Connect 16v to the points shown in the video. Or do what I did and cut the PCB in half and solder wires to the top and bottom thick traces (top is positive, underneath is ground). Then remove the label on the read ports, remove three tiny screws and you can remove the mains jack (cut the wires first). You can then run wires out the back or fit a DC jack.

    Wonder what specs are of the PSU. Worst case you can replace it with something else with about same specs (same or slightly lower voltage, at least same amp rating). That why I love external PSUs though many people hate them. So easy to replace when they fail and usually no point in trying to repair them - just replace. Usually it's no issue finding one that fits electrically and if using some odd connector just cut cables and reuse the old one.

    You don't have to replace the pump as long as its buzzing, that was air pocket and all you have to do was to turn your hot water knob on, the pump isn't good at pump air out in its normal frequency, and with the shot burst of pulse from the hot water, it does the trick, that works on many other machines as well, include a lot of semi auto machines.

      My Delonghi does still buzz, but just limited water comes out. So sounds like there could be air pocket in the line. By “turn the hot water knob on”, do you mean just run the pump without the coffee cup and coffee? It didn’t work for me after several runs. I noticed (or remember) that the pump used to have two distinct “buzz” sounds. One is a low “hum”, another a louder “buzz”. It was during the “buzzing” period that the steamed water come streaming out. I don’t have the louder “buzzing” sound anymore and only a trickle of water comes out. Any suggestions?

      @@wyt168 Is ur Delonghi a superauto machine, if so, it should have a hot water outlet, no? turn it on, let the hot water runs for 5-10 seconds, then, brew a shot.

    • @wyt168
      @wyt168 2 роки тому

      @@checkwhatsleft4565 : Thx for the reply. Mine is not a superauto machine. However, mine has a setting for a "foamer" (on the side of the machine). Taking the hint from your video that air bubbles could be trapped in the line, I tried to switch between "foaming" (which generates steam to the foamer) and "brewing", so each time I switch, steam would come out from the drip outlet that holds the espresso cup. I tried this a few times, and it seemed to have done the trick!

    -No on/off switch in the unit. You'll have to use the switch on the wall, or wire in your own switch in the plug or the wire -Tends to scorch food. -Very poor heat distribution. -Temperature is not adjustable. -Height of the upper plate can't be locked - it always presses down on the food. So you have to fiddle carefully with the placement of the food (get it exactly centered or it tilts and you end up with wedge-shaped bread because of the uneven pressure), and for soft foods like vegetable burgers the weight of the food tends to crush and deform them. -The temperature is set way too high. It scorches a lot of food before cooking them through. For example, if you're making sandwich toast you have to apply quite a bit of pressure on the handle to get the heat to penetrate through and melt the cheese, as otherwise you will just end up with burnt bread and cold cheese. -The heat distribution is extremely uneven. There is a hot spot running from front to back on the bottom plate about 1.5 inches from the right-hand edge. I'm guessing that's where one of the heating elements is. Any food placed in this area gets instantly burnt and inedible. The only solution is not to place any food on this hot spot, which effectively reduces the available cooking area to barely large enough to cook two slices of bread. After 7 months of using this toaster, the non-stick coating in this area has been burnt off, and it sports a visible layer of carbon because any grease or oil or cheese or crumbs from the food that make contact with this area burn immediately and are very hard to scrape off. - I JUST COPPY PASTE AN AMAZON CUSTOMER REVIEW. WE EXPERIENCED EXACTLY THE SAME THINGS. KEEP AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!! 👎👎👎👎👎 www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1CDXJUKTVP5JJ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B002MRS1LY

    • @HifiCentret
      @HifiCentret Рік тому

      The first thing happening in a switch mode is that AC is rectified to DC perhaps with a little filtering to get a nicer load on the AC kurve. So unless there's something really special about you PSU that expects and uses AC for something then yes you can power it using DC instead.
