This is a GREAT video. I am 70 years old and I don't do will trying to experiment with electronics all by myself. This saved me years of fiddling around. I don't have that many left. Thank you for making this video. I am glad you won the tournament.

I'm also 70 years old and just bought my very first fish finder. So, I'm scouring videos before taking it to the lake, because like you said, we don't have a lot of time left to waste!

The SI demo with the light bulb and paper was the best demo I have EVER seen and I have watched a lot on SI. Your explanation of the water column and how far away objects actually are is awesome. For the first time I actually get it. Thanks!!

I don’t have Livescope, but have watched multiple Garmin side-scanning videos and this by far is the best. You are very articulate and explain very well what we are seeing, which we all appreciate. Keep up the great work and good luck fishing. Obviously with your skill set you don’t need as much luck as the rest of us.

Best side scan video I've seen...graphics were outstanding at the beginning to really show how things lay out in 3-D. Only suggestion is you say you have to "subtract" off the depth...that is not really correct. The object's distance is exactly what it says on the unit if you draw a line from the transducer to the object. You can think of this as the hypotenuse of a right triangle (one leg of the right angle is a line dropping from transducer to the bottom, the other right angle side is from the bottom directly under the boat moving to the side (right or left) along the bottom. You do not subtract the depth of the right angle side going from the boat to the bottom from the distance along the bottom's right angle side...instead you measure the hypotenuse to get the distance. So the object is closer than it appears if you just consider distance right/left of boat, but it is not as close as you would calculate if you subtract the depth off of the range. Your model shows this relationship well, but you should not say to subtract off the bottom depth as that will put the distance too close to the boat (you could use geometry to actually calculate it...this is called slant-range correction). Anyhow...all that does not diminish how outstanding this video is...thanks!

After a while , you will just be able to be good at guesstimating I’m sure. This video fed me some great info. Looking into getting a side imaging graph. I have a gps map up front for livesvope, but to have lake mapping and side imaging at the wheel could be an efficient combo. With that being said, you guys know your stuff. What’s the best , “bang for your buck,” side imaging graph for lake mapping as well. Thank you .

This was probably the best overview on how to interpret side-scan I've come across so far. So many of the vids just go over the individual unit settings, but neglect to explain how to actually tell different things apart, be it structure, bottom types, or fish. Thanks for putting together a solid tutorial on actually understanding what's what on the screen and correlating it to the downscan. Got my first graph on the way and look forward to having a head start when I hopefully begin using it this spring.

You're and incredible teacher and it is evident you put a great deal of thought into the model and examples. As a proud fishing nerd, after 2 minutes, I paused the video, got my camera and computer. I took 13 photos of your examples, all the time taking notes. This is the most educational and concise presentation I've seen. I'm hoping you'll do more. Additionally, as an entrepreneur, I hope you perceive the financial opportunity you have.. Reach out to me if I can help, Again, thank you and I'm viewing the 360 next.

One thing that was not mentioned regarding side imaging, the dark spot directly below the transducer/hull and the distance from your boat is directly correlated to the depth of the water you are in. To overcome this problem mark the brush, rock or structure on the screen with a waypoint/GPS then go back over the waypoint and dial in the location precisely with a waypoint edit.

This enlighten me a lot. For some reason I didn’t put together the major benefit of the split screen until this. I understand it so much more because of the cross referencing. I kinda understood the professionals having multiple graphs but now it really makes more sense. I have a Garmin and plan on setting my split screens up very soon. Also the side imaging with the “ white dots “ enlighten me even more. That part I didn’t know and I realize how far behind I am in the game but at least I know now. Thanks dude!

G'day mate. I've actually paused the video to ask this question. It was the only thing in my 4 hours of You Tube and Dr Google that wasn't explained and you did so perfectly. The distance "fold up' of the black space makes perfect sense now and thank you for stopping my brain coming out of my ears. The distance adjustment was something I thought of in other tutorials but never explained. My question is : Why don't the manufacturers factor this in and make it so much less confusing???? Love this vid. Cheers

  • @chrisw8259
    @chrisw8259 Рік тому

    Great job on the video.
I would like to call attention to one thing though: the Biggest Mistake. Because sonar always goes in a straight line, when something shows up at 50 feet, it REALLY IS 50 feet away from the transducer. However, 50' away does NOT mean 50' to the side. But it's not as simple as subtracting the depth either. To know the exact horizontal distance, you need some trigonometry. The depth is one leg, the horizontal distance is the other leg, and the sonar distance is the hypotenuse. The good news is that as long as the target is more than two times the water depth, the adjustment to find the true horizontal distance is small. The key to remember is that it will always be closer than reported, but the amount closer depends on water depth and sonar distance to the target. Shallow water and large sonar distance, little correction is needed. When the sonar distance is barely more than the water depth, the target is practically under the boat.

I originally wanted a 10" solix fory kayak, but end of last winter I was able to pick up a 10" Garmin echomap Ultra 106sv for 758+ tax after sales & bass pro club points. Then I added steady cast heading sensor & Lvs34 system late January. Between sales, coupon codes BP club points which is cash in store. I ended up paying 2350+ tax for all of that! The 10" Solix or 10" hds pro is running 2799.99 by themselves. Been extremely happy with my set up so far. Its actually my first fishing electronics. In my opinion hummingbird still has best side imaging but Garmin's GT56 & new hd3n1 are so close, its not worth price difference for what I paid. Garmin definitely has edge on LS. Lowrance doesn't really have an edge with anything anymore. Their bad to almost non-existent customer support is what completely ruled them out for me.

The difference between side scan and ffs is you are not looking at the screen when your line is actually in the water. It also still preserves the “unknown” aspect that makes fishing fun.
I would allow it for 10% of tournaments for diversity.

Very helpful. Obviously it takes time to train the eye. I’ve had little success with side imaging other than spotting brush, stumps etc. I see now the fish aren’t going to “jump out” of the screen and a lot of what we are looking for, even structure, is likely to be much smaller than expected.

Thanks for the video, maybe there is a setting in humminbird that does not stop the SI when setting a waypoint? It is very inconvenient when SI stops at this time. The boat continues to move and while we set one point, we lose a lot of information. For lowrance SI echo sounders, it does not stop at this moment, but is recorded in the device’s memory and then scrolls quickly...

I am fairly new to kayak fishing with a side imaging transducer and does really take a trained eye to pick up on what you're actually looking at. Learned a few things from this. Well done.
I did have one question: in one section of the video, your downscan was picking up some fish that were also shown what I assumed to be pretty far off the side of your boat where I wouldn't have expected a "down" scan to see them. What kind of cone/radius/angle do downscans typically see?
