Minor quibble: Lunar Pool isn't "just pool" aside from the mechanics. One of the fun things about it is the constantly changing table layouts that keep things less boring.

I played Ultima to death. I had heard about the games on computer but I didn't have a computer. I managed to get to Exodus but couldn't defeat him. The Ultima series was MASSIVE in Japan. Both Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were started as attempts to see if an Ultima style game could even be done on the NES. And from that we have the entire JRPG genre. It all started with Ultima.

Zanac was the prototype for what became the Aleste series (M.U.S.H.A., Space Mega Force, Power Strike 1 & 2 etc). It's one of the very best 8-bit shmups there is period. Probably the only thing on the NES (not Famicom, Rekka is nuts) that matches its intensity is its sequel, Gun-Nac. One of the few true standouts in the genre on the system, I'd definitely rank it well above all that middling stuff.

I'm really looking forward to your coverage of the KOEI games. I know strategy games are not your taste, but I really hope you take your time with it and give them all a "I'm 12yo, and this is the game I rented for the weekend and I'm super sick of all the games I own" try. I really love the depth/immersion of these games... and while they have ENORMOUS learning curves, there is something to appreciate in all of them. Also... when it comes to box art... every single KOEI release box art sells the game. I'm sure there are a lot of people that were in your boat... that were enraptured by the box art, then got home and realized... "damn, this isn't my kind of game".

I played Dr Chaos again this weekend. I've beaten it several times over the years, and it holds up. The controls are a bit stiff and the hit boxes take some getting used to, but the structure of the game is cool, the atmosphere is awesome, and it definitely deserves a place as a formative survival horror game. It's just a bit cryptic for its own good to a new player who doesn't know where to get the warp zone detector. The game is really neat if you get past that hurdle.

There was an old Kung Fu movie called Mr Vampire that I guess Phantom Fighter is based off of. It's another bad Kung Fu movie to take or leave.

I had no idea that was a version of Dragon Strike on the Nintendo Entertainment System. I have that game for MS DOS and it was pretty entertaining way back in the day

Sounds about right. Some of these rpgs look interesting but I don't know if I could get into them today.

Two of my favorite wrestlers ever are listed as choices! Steamboat and Rotunda (I.R.S.), Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage along with Kurt Angle are my top 5. Flair is in my top 10. I've never seen Rotunda in any wrestling game other than IRS, interesting.

I was introduced to RPGs with Ultima 2 on the Atari ST. Such a hit or miss series. They also came out with an MMO in the late 90s that's apparently still active.

Sounds like _Legends of Future Past,_ which ended in 1999. The game also cost $6 an hour when it was exclusive to CompuServe's servers; accounting for inflation, it's even more expensive than season passes for games.

There were several FCI/Pony Canyon games that were not released in the USA, or internationally, with one of the most egregious omissions being Nuts 'N' Milk.

I have a soft spot for Heroes of the Lance. Of course, this was originally developed, like most of the AD&D games, for home computers like the C64, and in its day received amazing reviews on those systems, but home computer games were generally very different in gameplay from your typical NES sidescroller, and as a port to a console with a controller, it is very clunky. Be that as it may, this is actually the version I played (and beat), lol. But I knew going into it what it was and made the controls and pace work. I do really love the soundtrack on the NES though, and listen to it from time to time.

As a fan of the Ultima series, Exodus and QOTA are actually pretty good ports for the NES, very reminiscent of Dragon Warrior, and that's why I liked them. Warriors of Destiny on the other hand...Was very disappointing. It actually is one of the best story-wise of the series, but I think they tried to copy the game engine from Ultima 6 into the NES (Ultima 6 also was good on PC, but a crappy game engine!) and it just did not work out well. They should of kept it more like QOTA, and it would've done just fine.

That last Ultima game which you gave an F to really reminds me of the old PC Ultima games before actual screen scrolling was done. There's no excuse for that on the NES

They probably deliberately wanted to make it as close to the early PC experience as possible.

@@kekeke8988 yeah I suppose that's likely. Probably a poor choice if they went that route though rather than tailoring the game for a NES audience

Played a lot of WCW back in the day, we were fans of both but favored WWE more, however this was so much better than of the WWE games on the NES, plus it had Sting!!!
