we would play this at the bar my dad would sit and drink with his buddies and the kids would go to the back and play NBA JAM. then we would go home and play it some more and then ppl would bring their console and we would sneak into the school and connect the console and their would be 15-20 kids in a classroom with no supervision playing NBA JAM.

@@gone.golfing cause our middle school started at 9am, but kids would come in as early as 6:30 no security till like 7:30 and they never walked around yet cause there was almost no one there.
teachers don't start coming in to work till 8:30.
The class we chose to play in was an on the science building which is pretty much the oldest part of the school unpopular to go to. the second reason we chose this area is cause the emergency fire escape window is easy to rig and open.
the science building is also locked till 8:40 which meant we could go in and there would be no one to say anything.
the classroom we picked had no assign teacher in it so when the bell rung we would just pack up and leave. we made sure to close the windows and tape the glass on the door so no one could look inside.
when I was in 8th grade they had discovered quite a few kids would come at 6:30am so they did change some rules and started patrolling around the school to send kids to auditorium they didn't want kids playing basketball out there by themselves unsupervised.
since the science class was on the other side I could just wait till they finished that area and pop out from the tree and run towards the window. never got caught.

Glad to see you back! This is an awesome one. I was just starting my first job in the arcades as this tech marvel was coming out. That much like MK months before it drastically changed the clientele that was not only drifting into arcades, but was pretty much living there after school. These machines shipped with oversized coin drawers and were having to be emptied on Friday afternoon just to make it to Sunday evening.
I have no mental reference of what the teenage crowd was like in the Pacman fever era, but even my boss at the arcade said he had never seen anything like this before, even in the 80s when Dragonslayer came out. We had a few Midway (Jam/MK) machines and people lined up to battle the next winner from open to close on weekends, and holiday weeks in the winter hours. Anyways thanks again for the awesome content!

From around 1987 to 1998 I was really into basketball and the NBA. I played it on teams, collected basketball cards, had jerseys and clothing, new shoes each year, went to basketball camps in the summer, and watched it all the time on TV. I also was VERY into video games throughout that time. Both in arcades and at home, having as many as 5 home consoles at my peak. NBA Jam was a game that I really enjoyed. To some extent it was limited, and a short play. Nothing like Legend of Zelda Link to the Past or others like that. But it was just fun. I played it in arcades and on my SNES. It was a real mark of that time. Something I’ll always associate with the early and mid-90’s.

I'll never forget at around age 8 at Just Games on Harlem Avenue a 20-something year old came in and plopped a quarter on the MK II screen I was at.
He would eventually perform a Fatality on me, revert it to a Babality, back into fighter form.. and then into another Babality before exploding the baby into a Fatality.

This game was fun for an arcade game. But I don’t know why anyone would want to play it for very long at home. It’s not like you can do anything but play two on two. It also doesn’t depend very much on passing, which is my favorite part of the basketball.
funny to hear them say the game was inspired by that football game the game when people have been playing street ball for so long. I’ve always wanted someone to create a game that was more like street ball, but more of a street simulation than something that features 30 foot dunks from half court.
I was losing interest in NBA 2K my team because I was so tired of the computer making my players do 360 windmills in crunch time of a close game when all I needed was two points. Then I found out how to play off-line against the computer. I started creating players, and changing their animations to traditional, fundamental animations. I started changing the tendencies to reflect those fundamentals. I also gave every player perfect attributes and badges. You might think this sounds boring, but I started creating computer teams this way as well. I’d play with the new players for a bit and then give them to the AI teams. The game became extremely difficult and fun-also realistic. I think I’m pretty good at 2K, but I made the computer so good that every game was close. I have to run plays and make good decisions just to beat the computer. I also started modifying nba player builds, so I made shooting guard Kareem, point guard Shaq, 6 foot eight Steve Kerr, Rasheed Wallace, and so on. I change the size of the historic players as well. For example, Shaquille O’Neal became 6 foot eight but still very big and dominant as a point guard. You might think the game sounds boring if you play my team online all day, but it’s extremely fun when the computer has the best animations and tendencies and starts to play, realistically-on HOF difficulty of course. I don’t play that much these days but this is what I would play if I started again. I wish I would’ve figured that out before I played my team for a couple years. I just enjoy the game so much more when they’re difficult and realistic. I got tired of losing the guys who play all day until they figure out how to glitch the game and have no intention to play realistically. Anyway, I guess I got carried away talking about a different game. My bad.

This game is a pop culture icon, especially when they released it for Sega and Nintendo. My brother’s neighbor has one of those arcade games in his basement. Haven’t been a video gamer since 1995 or 96. But this is definitely an arcade game I’d love to have. And 30-31 years later my brother still has our Genesis cartridge of NBA Jam.

This game was amazing when it came out in the arcades. When Jam dropped on consoles on JamDay, had my Aunt pick me up from school and bring me right to the mall to buy it. Of course, had to hit up the arcade in there and play a quick game of Jam before slapping it in my console at home!! That was the best feeling!

Despite not actually ever playing it, I've seen quite a few documentaries about NBA Jam here on YT. They all mostly cover the same stuff, I was worried this was gonna be another rehash of basically the same things, but yours actually stood on its own and went over a lot of things that weren't covered in those. Really awesome.
Wasn't much of a football guy, but I used to play a ton of NFL Blitz though ("I brought the hurt on you boy!" lives in my head rent-free). Cool to see that it shares a common thread with Jam. Maybe I oughta play it some time.

Loved the arcade version of NBA Jams. I remember the first time I ever played it at AstroWorld in the mid-late ‘90’s. However, my all time favorite basketball game of that era was NBA Give and Go for the SNES! It was 5v5 and a bit more realistic with different camera angles and alley hoops, ball fakes, trick passes, and a variety of intense dunks! Nick Van Exel was unstoppable from behind the arc and Stockton and Malone were invincible with the play that gave the game its name! Although there was no Jordan, it still hit hard af when a group of around 6 or 8 of us from school would get together with some sticky green sustenance and run tournaments with 3 minute quarters…
    Ah, tha memories!!!

Great vid and intro with the Dennis Place for Games sign! I could have sworn the very first place to have NBA Jam on test was Time Square arcade in Chicago. I was there with Mark and some other Williams/Bally/Midway employees. That was also the first test site for Total Carnage, Smash TV, Terminator 2, and pinball. In fact that was the only place to have Rev. 8 code on Smash TV where you can access the Pleasure Dome. All production games did not have the updated code so you could never reach it. Time Square arcade also allowed smoking inside.

    • @WrestlingWithGaming
      @WrestlingWithGaming  8 днів тому

Thanks! Dennis' Place being where they initially debuted/tested NBA Jam came from interviews with Mark and the other guys on the team. I'm not sure why they changed locations for NBA Jam but they may have specifically chosen to do it someplace that didn't allow smoking to appear less "seedy" to the NBA, who was already weary of the whole thing to begin with. That's just my conjecture though.
