Just want to say how much I appreciate this channel. It's always great to see someone who is at the top of their craft. It's easy to see how much passion and dedication you put into your casts. As someone who doesn't play Broodwar it's still extremely satisfying to watch because of your knowledge and how well you explain what's happening. I'd love to see this wonderful game continue on for years to come.
Very clever early and mid game from Z, tricking P constantly and securing an economic advantage for the lategame, into the best guardian usage in ZvP I've seen. Well played from both, was a very close match. This is what it took to take out ZhanHun, the guy who eliminated Korean players with ease. Artosis was saying the early parts of the game were kinda passive, but I disagree, both players were constantly pulling threats at each other, and both were reacting to them very quickly, and each time each player switched accordingly without over-committing and dying early. This was very high level starcraft played here. There were lots of "death points" that simply didn't happen on screen. 2:09 P made two cannons as soon as he saw what Z is doing. If he didn't, game would be over, Z wins. 3:09 Z denies P scouting all the way until Corsairs, securing a huge advantage, not letting P be greedy. Notice 5:05 where P is just super passive. He has no intel. Around this time, Z reads based on P's zealot count that P is going Corsairs. Originally, he was going to go muta. If P didn't go Corsairs (had high Zealot count) Z has a win right here. The zergling poke and the intel it gave is what sealed Z's techswitch to hydras. 5:55 P made 2 Starports and cannons. No, Z didn't trick him. P has to do this. If he doesn't, he loses. Low count Corsairs straight up loses to mass muta with a couple scourges, which Z still can do even with the hydra den being bumped in. P avoids death point here, meanwhile Z gets economic advantage. Right after, Z does a good job of keeping all of his overlords together with the hydras. This might seem trivial, but losing random overlords at this part of the game is very expensive and will set Z back a lot, leading to a snowball in P's advantage. 8:22 Z makes a proper defense build at his 3rd. This is critical. Without this, P has enough zealots+corsairs at this point to kill his 3rd, and P wins. Z avoids a death point by doing this. Right around this time, P moves in to potentially win the game with zealot+corsair, but Z prepared just in time. Again, the ling pokes and looking at the zealot+corsair count lets Z know what P is doing. P could have about 30% more zea+sair at this point, but he doesn't, so Z knows he quickteched to templars, that's why Z doesn't engage with hydras, he's comfortable in his position. Engaging with hydras would lose him many units to zealot surrounds (potential corsairs killing overlords while hydras move in, then 1 DT comes in and kills a ton of hydras), setting Z back. 10:14 Excellent 4th base timing by Z. P has no way to engage this base since Z kept his hydras alive that entire time and has a high mass now + Z got overlord speed so he doesn't have to worry about drops/DT as much anymore. 11:15 P is active on the map with zea+sair. Not doing this means Z would be able to secure a 5th base, which is autowin for Z at that point. P keeps it at bay and doesn't let Z snowball his early economy advantage. Very good DT placements that make it hard for Z to expand + opens window for himself to expand, which he does right after at 11:35 12:48 Z's awareness allows him to spot and shut down the DT drop. It would have been so easy to miss this, lose 10+ drones and a ton of time to deal with the DT, but Z was prepared ahead of time. From here the next few minutes were lots of army adjustments. Lurkers > Zealots Zealots > Hydras+Lings Hydras+Lings > Dragoons Both players were constantly adjusting their armies based on what the opponent had. If any of them had done this wrong, he'd get overrun instantly. i.e. tons of hydras with few lurkers -> get run over by zealots+storms tons of zealots with no dragoons -> get pushed by lurker+ling, completely contained, Z expands more, you fall behind and die This is the point where one player would normally fall behind in adaptation and just crumble, but both players constantly adapted to each other very well. I think the guardians at the end were kind of sexy, but honestly if Z just went ultra+lurker+ling with a couple swarms/drops he'd win anyway. The reason Z won is thanks to holding his economic advantage throughout the game, and he styled with the extra money by going guardians instead of ultras. standard lategame here would require Z to get his ground upgrades up faster, which means when both players hit 3/3 attack/defense, it takes a zealot 3 hits to kill a zergling, not 2 as when P is ahead in upgrades. This, combined with the fact that Z has the adrenal upgrade for zerglings, means that lings hard counter zealots, at which point Z can literally just spam lings and attack move and kill everything. P's only solution to this is abusing choke points and AoE with stuff like reavers, but dark swarm + a few ultras to tank initial waves + good ling spread or drops to get from around lets Z win anyway. It's pretty micro intensive but Z units are way more cost efficient than P in lategame which is why it's considered a hard matchup for P. Going guardians is objectively weaker than doing this, but Z was ahead in econ and guardians aren't bad per-se, so he did it to be cool. When his initial guardian morph failed, he instantly spawned ultras to transition to ultra+ling as a fallback plan, because he does care about winning and won't try to be stylish if it's too close Actually looking back at it, around 20 minutes in, P's entire army would lose to a single dark swarm + a couple ultras + 30 adrenalings, which is very cheap for Z to produce. maybe Z was purposely not winning because he wanted to go guardians :) he probably knew he's already so much ahead here
Guardians were the only play. Protoss had Archon/Reaver/HT/Zealots, which does really well against ling/ultra, even when it's plagued it can take fights. Only when the Zerg has a lurker spread can they pinch the fights, but that's hard to set up and the protoss can out maneuver. I still think the zerg probably wins from a pincer move on the left hand base, but the guardians was almost an auto win whereas that other play could have been disgustingly cost-ineffective. Also lings don't hard counter zealots. Only in 1v1. When zerglings take ANY storm damage they'll die to a single hit from the zealots. Proper Protoss play can demolish late game zerg armies.
Love to see Guardians to the rescue. Don't get to see them that often because of cost, but man...when they are in a group like that, it is darn neat impossible to kill them fast enough before they take out your whole base.
He had them split pretty well too which meant having to use a ton of storms..and corsairs really don't do enough damage to em either. Zhanhun really needed to make 2 scouts lol...one of the very few times making scouts is good.
Tbt they only were effective because toss had only scraps of an army. With any reasonable unit composition those guardians would've been dead before they know it.
Yeah, this was probably the best game I have seen on this channel in the last several months. Zerg counters all the early game, and then slowly pushes forward and choke holds the protoss that was on such a win streak. So good to see the full tech tree being utalized. wow!
Wow, this game is insane but definitely worth watching it. It consists of some Guardians played through out the end and it was so intense. I love using guardians as well but they are easily ripped off by storms or Corsairs. But Jedi really bring out the game! GG.
This has got to be the best PvZ I have ever seen! Ultras, Guardians, Devourers, Reavers, so so so many Archons! Really we were only missing scouts haha!
I like to turn on these games right after jerkin it. The opening pace of the game is perfect for that recovery period and by the time the game is in full swing you're back to full strength
is it worth swapping over to reavers if you know your storm won't be ready on time for the hydra bust ? and use the reavers as a defensive tool until you can get the storm , or simply skip storm until late game and push with reavers and shuttles ?
This is a common question. Reavers just don't do the job, despite the fact that they seem like they would in theory. Their splash isn't good enough against a zerg who can micro hydras well. Additionally the toss will only be able to make 1 reaver at a time out of their robo (it's not practical to make more than 1 robo at that point in the game) and reavers have a fairly long build time, so by the time the bust hits, the toss might have 2 reavers. It's just not enough.
Where are the scouts? Was waiting for a bit of a flood of them 4-6 with that bank and control the skies with them... Even take down overlords and push away defilers, then he can't make too many lurkers either.
This game is so epic. I wish more Korean zergs take this approach vs late game protoss: this surgical removal of high templars and reavers with mutas and guardians, instead of ramming units into storms and scarabs over and over. I know dark swarm is the "pro" spell but it does nothing to both of these units.
Arty! Saiyankcm is posting recent flash games from less than a week ago (against snow and jaedong). I couldnt find any official info regarding his return. Could you please make a post about flash and his future in starcraft?

Wow, one of the more entertaining PvZs I've seen in years. I'm pretty sure I've never seen guardians in ZvP too.
This is why SC1 is awesome, Zerg used EVERY single unit on their roster in one game!
