- In this video, you will learn about the basics of block references in Logseq, a powerful feature that allows you to link to any block in your notes. You will see how block references can help you create connections between your ideas, reuse existing blocks in different contexts, and avoid duplication. By the end of this video, you will be able to use block references effectively in your note-taking workflow.

I love Logseq. But I wish the block references at least had a partially human readable format. So if I ever needed to switch app I could at least see which page the block was on.
Agree, the difference in internal linking makes switching a lot harder. I could probably write a script to convert the data for me but it would still be a pain.
How I use block references at work at the moment: I have a daily template that contains the heading „tasks“ and „log“. In log, I write all my meetings and interesting stuff that happened there. During a meeting there can be tasks I want to do. After the meeting I block-reference the task into my „tasks“ section and move my tasks up and down to prioritize them (I’m not using A-C priorities). When I click on the task I can see the context. When the task is finished, it will appear finished everywhere I referenced it. I’ll also reference the block the next day if I couldn’t finish the task this day.
Very close to mine, think the only difference is that I find the tasks to do using simple queries and priorities but the rest is a near 1 to 1 match. Another small difference is that I have the Agenda section so I know what to expect that day and can prep those sessions without them being in the way in my log session.
Nice to see a few workflows rise to the top
Definitely. Also very cool that you showed the workflow with the „mini projects turning into bigger projects“ thing with blocked references, I didn’t notice that you see all the pages where you referenced a block automatically, very nice feature. I will surely make use of that in the future 🙌
Ta very much for this. I'll certainly be making use of this feature. 🙂
That tweet I saw, in your script, is family for some reason... 🤔😆
Always a balance showing the notes, obviously you would show up on your suggested topic 😁
When I have a task that's going to take more than one day (or which I don't even get to start the first day I have it as a goal) I make a TODO on that day's journal page, then put a block ref to it on the journal each day I have it as a goal. I sometimes use block refs for other things but that's the way I use them most frequently. The default query helps me figure out what to put in each day's journal page but I don't check things off in it directly.
Yeah, that's a really nice way of tracking tasks that walk over multiple days. I still use my daily tasks block in the journal to keep me focused even though I have queries now. There's just something about picking a TODO by hand the gives it more weight.
I actually never use block references ever haha. I didn't think of using it as a table of contents though :0. I'll see how I can utilize that!
For me it started with never but slowly increased. Let me know how the TOC experiment went!
appreciate your content! if there's any way you can turn your volume up in post-production that would be great! just some feedback
Failed to do my usual double check and noticed after the video went live, it should be much much better on my other videos and I have made a note to always double check from now on.
Still waiting for that note taking just in time video you mentioned :)
Still on my list, thanks for the reminder. Planning to pick that topic up after I finish the project management one.
is there a way to copy a block in to edit without changing the original block?
Do you mean using CTRL+SHIFT+C to copy the text instead of the link (CTRL+C) or the block embed (CTRL+E)?
Possible to have automatic table of contents that is always visible at the right like in some other note-taking apps?
Not automatic, that's also on my wishlist. As a workaround I make a TOC with block references and shift click that block so it shows up on the right.
We have to repeat that process with every (long) page divided by h2 headers which is a pain. Can't believe this is not a thing already in Logseq.
@@SridharKatakam Better option is to use the TOC plugin and shift click that one.
See id: logseq-tocgen in marketplace, add the TOC to top of page with /toc and then shift click to move it to the right to have it always in view
@@toolsontech yes, am aware. Doesn't it have the same problem? It is not dynamic in the sense it only shows the tags of the current page from which it is shift clicked. If we navigate to a different page, we have to again shift-click this page's TOC and close all earlier pages' TOCs.
@@SridharKatakam Currently yes, I get the feeling that plugins lack a good set of tools for consistent interfaces.
If it's mostly to quickly jump through a document then maybe this plugin is an option. It's not in the marketplace but looking at it it allows to jump through headings in the current page.

A good permanent TOC anywhere on the screen would still be best.
Hey - i just wanted to make a tutorial on that for my channel 😆 Probably will be doing it anyway cause i think it's very important and germans need to know it, too ;)
I don't like that blocks with shift+enter line breaks only show the first line if referenced. that really messes up my poem references. This should be editable in the settings. there is a low profile feature request for that, so i am still hoping :)
I thought there was a switch for it now to show the whole block reference. Something that I don't use as it would mess op my workflow. But double check the settings.
And definitely go for it, more logseq videos is always better!
@@toolsontech You were absolutely right, there is a switch now. Did NOT know that! Awesome, thx.
Just a feedback :black screen is not very visible on cell phones. Maybe it's only me, but I often watch videos on the train....
I believe the guidelines for Logseq state I should be using the default (white) theme. So expect that on my next video about Logseq.
