I think the big issue with Mary Sue characters like Rae and Captain Marvel isn't with them being super powerful... it's that the story they are in tries to act like they're not and tries to still act like they are in some kind of peril despite never being in any danger because of how overpowered they are. Rae Palpatine (she is _NOT_ a Skywalker no matter how much she tries to self-identify as one) completely invalidates all the other characters around her, making them utterly useless. She's a better fighter than Finn, she's a better pilot than Po, she's a better engineer than Chewbaca, she literally fills all the roles of the party and can do those roles better than any of the other characters, making all those other characters feel useless and pointless... and yet at the same time she is significantly less interesting as a character than Finn, Po, or Chewey. Finn has a far more interesting premise being a defecting Stormtrooper (though that premise was sadly scrapped almost immediately, turning his character into the 'Where da white woman at?!' stereotype), Po has far more interesting characterization as the hot shot pilot who is brash and headstrong. And I don't think I even think I need to explain why Chewbaca is better, because it's Chewbaca. Rae in comparison is just _BORRRRRRINGGGGGGG_ as a character; she has no depth, she's perfect at everything she does, yet at the same time her character has no real motivation or direction and instead she's just kind of swept along by the story and thus she's bland. Captain Marvel? She's just an absurd caricature, the stereotypical man-hating uber sexist feminist. That's literally her entire character... gee, I really do wonder why she's not popular with the majority of the Marvel fandom that happens to be men... it's a Scooby Do mystery.
Yes I do agree with you, I didn't touch on it in the video but you are right! One reason for Captain Marvels unpopularity was the fact she was very aggressive into wanting to prove how better she was than men and the fact that Marvel couldn't read the room and know that their male dominated fanbase wouldn't like this is crazy! Also you analysis on Rey is spot on! Thank you for your comment!
The worst thing about Rey isn't the fact that she's overpowered but the fact that she can do all this despite having no training or experience whatsoever in this regard, the most famous example is when she defeated Kylo Ren despite having literally no training as a Jedi and never holding a lightsaber in her life. This doesn't make any sense even in the context of Star Wars.
The best summary I've seen of what a Mary Sue is, isn't "Mary Sue is an overpowered character," but "Mary Sue is a character for whom the universe of the work will bend or even break its own rules to ensure they never face any meaningful consequences."
@@ssRAY- Women (not in general but how they’re written by as I’d like to call them “some guys” in 2020s Disney movies that like with Dan Schneider and other real-life villains like the Nazis, but I digress, ElectricDragon505, Beyond the Trailer and their fellow far-left people would defend more than anything else): Men shouldn’t wish death upon their worst enemies, but women can backstab their friends if they don’t agree with everything they say.
Speaking the truth, the people who run media are out-of-touch to their own audience. We got too much out-of-touch people in our favorite franchises. Look what happened to the DCEU, instead of having writers who love Batman and want to write him as he is in a new story, then turn him into the DC equivalent of the punisher which role work of it was Red Hood. We got a lot of out-of-touch people running out entertainment and we need to kick these narcissist out if we want to see True strong female protagonist again.
I take Saber over Rey any day hell I say she would have been a better Jedi than Rey but the point is the easterners knows how to write characters who are strong that just so happens to be female due differences obstacles they face in their stories. While the west writers don’t know how to write a strong female characters who doesn’t know the true meaning of being strong instead they made the Mary sues, devalue the male characters just to prompt them up and in your face type of vibe makes the female characters boring and makes complete jerks.
Western "strong women" try to be men. That's the real problem. Eastern strong female characters usually have a good degree of femininity and are still strong. In the west, it's as if the feminists hypocritically believe that femininity is weak. You can see it in other areas of culture where social perceptions are important, like politics. Why do all the women in politics wear a pant suit? Would people not vote for a woman in a dress? I just can't believe all of these women are so butch and not one of them is more feminine. And sure, there are women who are naturally more masculine or butch and don't like to present in a feminine way... but ... it's such a stereotype in the West that these are the only "strong" women, or that in order to be seen as strong, women have to eschew femininity and female stereotypes and be more like a man. I love how they call out "toxic masculinity" then they adopt all the "toxic masculine" traits to try to be stronger women. Lol.
Those incompetent writers always think stronk independent women characters with no deep characterization = Great writing 😂😂😂 Saber is honestly one of the best female characters I ever see
A personal favourite for me is also Jolyne Kujo from JoJos Bizarre Adventure. The fact that she is a woman alone makes the fights great because she is the underdog in a lot of them from a physical perspective so she has to fight even smarter, use tactics, tricks and analysis of her opponent. The author flipped the script on the "traditional" beefcake protagonist having to fight tricky, scheming opponents and it just works perfectly.

She broke 3 doors and discharged a weapon many times in public with civilians about. That's not how a heroic figure behaves.
I have to disagree wholeheartedly with the first part. These older showrunners and producers had plenty of female characters look up to. In the 2nd route UBW she was relegated to side character. Todays problem is that term "west" is used as synonim to USA and term "east" is used as synonim to Japan. Result of this is there are plenty of stories that ignored are at the both sides of Atlantic ocean. Simply USA is dried out ideas. Europe still has ideas. Instead takes inspiration from Europe, Europe takes from USA. Maybe it is just a bubble, but it is little bit funny, how some geeks cry about terrible state of fantasy, but always overlook homeland. For example Cinderella. When Disney live-action version came out, it was advertise as modern version, where Cinderella is rebel one, but as a Czech I thought "What about Three Nuts for Cinderella from 1973?" What about something different? What about 12 months? Or Smart Sally (Chytrá horákyně)? Or something from France, UK, Germany, ect..
Although this video is a critique of Western female protags, this is also a frustration I share with Isekai protags. So often, they are made so overpowered that whenever a fight comes up, it is completely one-sided in their favor. Without any antagonist to truly stand up to them, it makes for a slop of a story.
Most isekai protagonists don't have any problems or challenges and very few overpowered protagonists are well written, at least anime fans admit they're trash
That is common with the genre. Its like saying nakama power and talk no jutsu does not belong in shonen. There are other genres in anime who have better power scaling than isekai animes.
Disney seems to hate females similar to the gaming indusrtry. Frozen was the last feminine things we had and she had depression and other issues (relatable to me), my favorite movie, too. All their new stuff with leading women suck and is unrelatable anyway.
I mean they nail mulan in original animation but somehow still managed to butcher her character in live action should be enough evidence on how far degraded current western media creative department
Artoria Pendragon (or Saber) is my favourite character in anime(and things related). And she’s super strong, one of the strongest even, but she’s not obnoxious nor flawless.
Not gonna lie one of the many reasons i love the Xenoblade series it's because both male and female characters can be such badasses but with genuine obstacles to overcome and still show emotions and flaws, characters that make mistakes and bond with others When was the last time you saw a female character from the west admiting she liked a guy, like is that supposed to be a weakness? When most of male characters even today have that special lady they want to get back to after the day is saved
Just my opinion so no one gets butt hurt but… AOT is hot trash & my anime essay playlist tears it apart. No one can defend this edgy fest after seeing it.
Reminder that it's not bad to have female protagonists. We have good protagonists from shows such as Kim Possible, Mulan, Owl House, Amphibia......I could make a list but it would take too long. But please for the love of God, don't pull the age old mistake writing terrible female characters, Mary sues that no one will care about or relate, or pander to a minority like corporations do (I stress the corporate part especially because we know how they act)

he is talking about major media organizations example BBC ,New york times in simple words media that operates at a large scale nation or even internation. and he also said "mainstream media only 4 times in the whole video "
Keep in mind that Disney hired a former PERSONAL ASSISTANT of Harvey Weinstien and has explicitly stated that she wants this show to explore queer identity in the star wars universe and even stated that it's the gayest star wars show ever, with her adding how she thinks that it's obvious that R2D2 is canonically a lesbian. Tell me this show is woke without telling me this show is woke.
I see Artoria I click. Also Captain Marvel and She-Hulk suck. Glad Ryan took them out of Deadpool and Wolverine! Also coincedence... Its Fate Stay Night's anniversary and FGO is giving away a free Artoria. Neat.
Bruh some of those "cartoons" you mentioned are Anime especially Neon Genesis evangelion is not for kids 💀 Also I'm a big fan of Fate series and i don't like Star wars anyway to begin with
Yes! It's not about who's better or who's stronger. The best stories in my opinion is when all the characters have something different to bring to the table and how they compliment each other with their strength and weaknesses. Thank you for the comment!
I have a lot to say about my frustrations towards (mostly) american media, but I'll say this. Between americans and other parts of the world, the US (starting around the 2010s) is too "comfortable?" As in, they're way into their la-la-land bubbles and rather make new "problems" and continously victim-blame over innovating and improving. It's been a decade, and they STILL NEVER learn a lesson. And what's sorta ironic is that the countries (south korea for example) that are just as developed as the US continues creating neat & refreshing stuff that doesn't talk down to the audience, regardless of quality. Idk, I'm rambling, but it is funny to notice.
Hajime Isayama did an amazing job with female characters, not only with Mikasa. Mikasa is criticized for being “boring” in the anime, having a one track mind and only thinking of Eren. I hear she’s more fleshed out in the manga. That said, i still love her to death. Her role in the story is HUGE, whereas other female characters in shonen anime (i don’t think AoT is shonen, but just bringing shonen up because it’s usually showcased alongside them and also has some shonen characteristics) are put in the background, or if they do fight it’s usually just fighting other female villains who are inconsequential in the story. That’s a major reason why i think Mikasa is iconic now. But besides Mikasa, we have Hange, Crista, Sasha, Annie. Hange I would argue is probably the best female character out there. She is multifaceted, multidimensional - it’s hard to find other characters like Hange. Props to Isayama, and hoping his work will pave the way for other creatives to create diverse, complex, and amazing characters and stories.
When you compare these protagonists from the female protagonists from Anime Jolyne joestar from jojo and violet Evergarden are leagues above these toxic women .
Even in 80s Western animated series, you had good female protagonists. They needed help from time to time, but they were not helpless damsels in distress. We had Scarlett and Lady Jaye from GI Joe, Diana the Acrobat from Dungeons and Dragons, Teela from He-Man & the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra who was the titular character in She-Ra Princess of Power, Cheetara from Thundercats and Firestar from Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, just to name a few. They all had flaws and/or weaknesses but they generally were good characters.
The problem is they feel "self insert" instead of becoming their own character. Please don't turn original story into self insert fanfic. You're not Dante
I'd have loved to see a more niche character from anime, someone like Tokiha Mai from Mai-HiME or Otonashi Saya from Blood+. To think no one remember the old glories...
Dude, you know that the King Arthur chick is a gender swapped King Arthur right? Not a great example of Anime being better or different than the garbage coming out of the West
Artoria's got one thing that one-up her over Western examples: She's not a sociopolitical bludgeon used by creators and shills against criticisms directed at the work she's based on like their Western counterparts like to do since 2016.
Yeah and she's still a well-written character. Mostly because the author didn't use her as a tool for moral lecturing and virtue signaling, Saber actually has a personality outside of her gender.
@@jahrusalem3658 This. Yes, she is a genderswapped Arthur, but they still wrote her well and managed to weave that element of woman having to pretend to be a man to fill a certain role, while never for one second being preachy about it. It was all done in service of her character and how she and her story develops.

Well to be fair, I'd rather watch those shows than a single episode of Velma. Because at least those shows are entertaining.
Not gonna lie one of the many reasons i love the Xenoblade series it's because both male and female characters can be such badasses but with genuine obstacles to overcome and still show emotions and flaws, characters that make mistakes and bond with others
When was the last time you saw a female character from the west admiting she liked a guy, like is that supposed to be a weakness? When most of male characters even today have that special lady they want to get back to after the day is saved
Some good female protagonists in jrpgs: Dana from Ys 8, Estelle from Trails in the Sky, Virginia from Wild Arms 3
Update: The Acolyte performed so badly, Disney has decided to not renew it for another season. It's dead.
You got yourself a sub and your vid got shown to me on my main page so algorythm choose you(probably becouse it expected from a title an inflamatory vid that fuels culture war)
Thank you appreciate the sub!
I don't think you understand what a mary sue is.
A hero is defined by what they overcome. Already better, so there's nothing for them to overcome.
Ray more tamentor luke than luke did mentoring her.
my favourite is from the game kotor 2 exile and kreia
alvin and the chipmunks
The way you talk with a high lilt at EVERY end of sentence is very annoying. I wanted to enjoy your video, but I can't take it. Sorry. Please adjust if you want your video to go far. It has potential
Thank you for your advice
Well said.
Ah yes, using female shounen to try to make this point makes this point almost completely invalid
Stop saying "Mainstream media". You said that phrase ten times in the first 3 minutes. Be specific. WHO said what you're claiming? We can't debate with a ghost.
he is talking about major media organizations example BBC ,New york times in simple words media that operates at a large scale nation or even internation. and he also said "mainstream media only 4 times in the whole video "
Thank you!
Wtf did I just read? 😵💫😵💫😵💫
I see Artoria I click.
Also Captain Marvel and She-Hulk suck. Glad Ryan took them out of Deadpool and Wolverine!
Also coincedence... Its Fate Stay Night's anniversary and FGO is giving away a free Artoria.
Neat.
Bruh some of those "cartoons" you mentioned are Anime especially Neon Genesis evangelion is not for kids 💀
Also I'm a big fan of Fate series and i don't like Star wars anyway to begin with
Good stories have balance male and female characters, where each having their own skills.
Yes! It's not about who's better or who's stronger. The best stories in my opinion is when all the characters have something different to bring to the table and how they compliment each other with their strength and weaknesses. Thank you for the comment!
they added activist instead of actual writers that can tell a story thats the main problem
I like how you said "those that support it", not 'Those that like it" because no one likes it, even the people that so badly try to support it
I have a lot to say about my frustrations towards (mostly) american media, but I'll say this.
You're spot on about this and about the timing of when this all started.
I see Saber, i click and good video man❤️🔥
I’m over this whole girl boss thing I’m probably old-fashioned but I prefer the characters that are sweet, kind feminine flawed, but yet relatable.
agree
Even in 80s Western animated series, you had good female protagonists. They needed help from time to time, but they were not helpless damsels in distress. We had Scarlett and Lady Jaye from GI Joe, Diana the Acrobat from Dungeons and Dragons, Teela from He-Man & the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra who was the titular character in She-Ra Princess of Power, Cheetara from Thundercats and Firestar from Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, just to name a few. They all had flaws and/or weaknesses but they generally were good characters.
absolutely spot on mate
Thank you!
The problem is they feel "self insert" instead of becoming their own character.
Please don't turn original story into self insert fanfic. You're not Dante
Yea thats why Princess Leia got cancelled and kicked out of starwars! Lmfao
This is a good video, but all I got from it is that I need to relisten to Ff13 2 soundtrack.
Bro cooked with this video. Great job.
Thank you Matt! I appreciate the kind words!
Bee Train anime like Noir and Madlax have great female characters.
I'd have loved to see a more niche character from anime, someone like Tokiha Mai from Mai-HiME or Otonashi Saya from Blood+. To think no one remember the old glories...
Are you nuts!!!! It's fear that makes people respect makima against their wills, it's literally her power💀
Male protagonists good, female protagonists bad.
Even though she is gender swapped king arthur, her being a woman is something explored in her story.
But you'd know if you had read the visual novel.
@@igorcirovic8107 I could call Nasu a lot of things. A bad writer would never be one of them, his character use is top-notch.
