How on earth did i forget the episode with the haunted battle axe wielding werewolf. I remember Wolf becoming his hybrid form, but not the whole haunted axe thing.
From the way I see it, Macbeth never did anything wrong. He’s arguably the most tragic victim in the whole show. He never harmed Duncan until he found out that Duncan ordered his father’s death and wanted him dead too. He was perfectly justified in executing Duncan for that, and he showed honor and mercy to Duncan’s son. He was an amazing king and leader, and Demona betrayed him at the slightest vocal consideration that he may betray her, which he wasn’t really considering on doing. He was taken down because of Demona acting against him before confronting him. And then he leaves everything he ever loved to preserve it. He is forced to hide away from his family and kingdom so they can continue to thrive. He only kidnapped Goliath and the others because he believed they were allies with Demona and probably thought they could lead him to her. He turned out to be wrong, but he had plenty reason to believe he was right (Although I guess I should rewatch that episode to be sure). Macbeth has been cursed to live for 1000 years. All he wants is to pass away from life like everyone living creature is destined to do. He doesn’t want to kill Demona in revenge. He just wants to finally rest in peace, and there’s no sin in taking her down with him.
I'm so grateful "Future Tense" was one episode and only a possible future. I read a fanfic that saw it play out as a season-long story with a few choice edits on the authors part (eg. Lex was coersed into betraying the clan). It was heartbreaking and completely devastated me as a teenager to the point where I almost grieved for the characters and I'd really wanted a happy ending for all of them. That's my embarrassing tale.
Yeah ☺ Two beautiful & intelligent women of the law becoming romantically involved with unconventionally attractive individuals that were both sensitive & tough
a gargoyles video? in ...2019...? Is this what happiness feels like ( TT u TT )? Also coldstone, coldfire and coldsteel's real names and their relationship is a reference to the Shakespearean play "the tragedy of Othello, the moor of venice"; othello (coldstone), desdemona (coldfire) and iago (coldsteel)
God i loved this series. Too many great episodes to count. Great but i’m sure daunting review. I didnt get all of the references when it first aired but thanks to syndication on toon disney (RIP) i was able to enjoy it more when i was in high school and had more exposure to shakespeare. I really appreciated the world tour and all the mythologies they let shine. When they switched networks and timeslots, i knew that was the death knell for the series. Still watched but it was bad.
I wish they would make more back in '96. I do not want them to make more now. Even with Greg at the helm, he's lost his marbles.. I don't want another Young Justice.
Great retrospect, dude! Season two of Gargoyles might just be some of the best television I've ever seen, animation or otherwise. And I don't make such praise lightly.
in the end everything that happened to Demona was her fault, jumping to conclusions without talking things out, the destruction of her clan not once but twice. I understand why she hates us but thats her fault not ours but she hates Elisa cause she's Goliath love interest now and a better woman then she is or ever was. I really liked Puck he was my fav character from the fairy realm being a trickster just like the MCU's Loki only not out to destroy the world
the theme makes me want to weep my favorite show growing up. I was legit disappointed that i wasn't born a gargoyle LOL. I used to record eps and rewatch them :)
One rather obscure animated show from the 90s I've never seen mentioned by any UA-cam reviewer was *"The Legend of Calamity Jane."* It was briefly on the the WB network (not sure if it was part of the "Kids WB" lineup) and basically a western made to look like a Spaghetti Western with a female hero as the star. It was really a mixed bag in my opinion but still noteworthy for being an original work and having it's own unique style.
Demona can be an alternative protagonist, she is a very complicated character, and her experience is very brilliant. After the tragedy of the castle, She lost everything, hatred and despair gradually eroded her mind, and The Angels of The Night have become "Demona". I like the scene in S02E08 Vows, Young Demona loved Goliath very much 1000 years ago, she refused to betray him and saying she didn't want to be Future Demona.
As many times you used Back to the Future 2 as an example of time paradox, It was also a wasted opportunity to mention Detective Bluestone is the same actor as Biff.
I was worried about you Paul! Had not seen anything on UA-cam or even Twitter in a while. With this video being 40 minutes long and Season 2 being 52 episodes I can see why you've been absent. Welcome back ♥️ I really need to go pick up the Gargoyle DVDs and rewatch all of these. There is so much I don't remember ever seeing! As always I love your retrospective and will be sharing it with friends!
Yea, this one was a doozy! Haven't really had time for any other videos besides weekly movie reviews, and even that I skipped last week to try and get this out for Friday (which still didn't happen). I hope it was worth it, though. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Apparently Atlantis:The Lost Empire would have been canon in the Gargoyle Universe as well..if they hadn't cancelled all of the spin-offs. So many lost opportunities..
I have to admit, I kind of hate how the show written Demona. Granted, if a reboot was ever done, I still want Demona to be the tragic antagonist, but not so much a villain. While overboard, she still had a point and drove home that Gargoyles purpose didn’t have to mean to serve humans, especially humans who treated them less than second class citizens. Just replace Gargoyles with any marginalized group of people. If a reboot is ever done, I would love to see her points made clear and have Goliath’s own beliefs about what makes a Gargoyle and that they’re purpose does not have to be serving or protecting humans, if at all. Demona can still be the “bad guy” and still be single minded over her hate of humans, but it could be because she can’t get over the oppression she had to suffer under them.
Love the videos, and, I know it's a little out of your wheelhouse, could you touch on the canon comic continuation/alternate season 3 of gargoyles. They have great stories and got a rough treatment.
Hoooo boy. Idk if I'd want to subject my rose tinted nostalgia goggles to rewatching Street Sharks. I absolutely LOVED that show back when I was like, 3 or 4. Perhaps someday!
@@BullSession I feel that, if Mattel ever do decide to resurrect Street Sharks, they should take it in a darker, grittier direction. After all, what happened to the Bolton brothers (painful, unnatural transformations into monstrous looking creatures followed by their father's corrupt ex-partner framing them thus turning most of their hometown against them) certainly lends itself to more mature storytelling (old show ATTEMPTED it, but things got too narmtacular). Also, really lean hard into the body horror aspect inherent to the characters. Get Cronenberg up in this joint.
The hunters are not descendants of the original hunter, GilleCoem Gaim. They are descendants of Duncan and his son Canmore, which is why they call the Hunters are part of clan Canmore.
11:30 wait is it actually said to be Belle’s dress because that expands your King Arthur theory considerably. In Kingdom Hearts Merlin a recurring supporting character and Belle makes a few appernces in the series. The fact this girl has the dress of someone from another world. Given that she didn’t get back to New York with a corridor of darkness we can rule that possibility out. However this means she’s possibly met a keyblade wielder if she isn’t one herself
Great video, re-watching the series and introducing it to my gf. We're currently on the first few episodes of the world tour. Xanatos is my all time favourite antagonist but I always feel the world tour episode where he mentions cliched villainy feels like writers hanging a lantern for Xanatos being under or poorly written in that episode. The scheme seems beneath him but they had to sort of justify it. My least favourite moment with the character.
If this show hadn't been screwed up and meddled with so badly, I really would have liked to see the Gargoyles take on other mythic and fantasy creatures. I know they kinda fought a werewolf with both Fox and...er...Wolf, but having them face a version of the Universal Classic Horror monsters would have been extremely fun! Gargoyles vs. Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, The Wolfman, The Mummy, Mr. Hyde, and Creature from the Black Lagoon has a lot of potential to me.
Goliath insists on treating the whole clan as Angela’s parents. The whole clan (not counting the trio and older Hudson) are dead. He seems to have forgotten that.
I always found Demona's anger at Puck turning the humans into gargoyles to be a major sign of how much she's been blinded by the desire for vengeance and by her own hatred? Because, if you think about it, she was basically getting what she wanted and more - not only would the humans be gone, like she wanted, but she would literally be able to live in a world full of gargoyles again, possibly more than she'd ever known before then. But she was so focused on wanting to make the descendents of those who she felt wronged her pay that she didn't want the humans "replaced", she just wanted them all dead.
Physically being gargoyles didn't change that they were, at their core, still humans. They were raised with human values, ideas, beliefs, structures of society, religion, government, politics, etc. They were no more gargoyle than Elisa was when she turned. Didn't even know how to fly. It's the whole 'putting pearls on a pig' thing. Doesn't change what they were, even if in this case, they technically didn't remember physically being human before...in their heads, they always would've been.
Apparently Snidely Whiplash was a real person in the Gargoyles universe, given how Derek referred to him. After all, people don't usually talk about reincarnation in regards to fictitious characters. Hmm. That'd mean that Dudley Do Right was also real. Considering Weisman planned to use everything/everyone brought up in this show, now matter how trivial (Space Spawn), for future stories I'm left wondering if much like Nought (background character in The Gathering) he now intends to do something with Derek's throwaway line. Hmm. That'd be an interesting crossover. Goliath:"Why is that man sitting backwards on that horse?" :P
I watched a few episodes of this when I was little then rewatched the whole series a couple years ago. And I can’t believe not many people know about this show. This needs a lot more love. If ducktales can get a reboot this can
It's honestly a beautifull animated serie I'm from the new generation and I'm proud To say I learned english because of gargoyles (I'm french) this is honesly a really deep cartoon de can't find in our days (only in anime manga) I've would have liked live in those time :)
I'm interested to see your review on Season 3. I loved Gargoyles growing up but it wasn't till I got all the episodes from a flatmate and uni did I watch the whole series. I was so disappointed with Gargoyles; The Goliath Chronicles that I deleted that season and kept the others. Only things I remember was how I expected Xanatos to come up with a great scheme or use the Iron Clan robots to distract the anti-gargoyle group, but he was very inactive for most of the season. There was also that anti-climatic ending. :(
Good comments , it was a good show in that time. Like many other shows are gone..... Reboot , shadowriders, gargoyle , spiderman the new animated series. That was the best.
I feel there was always 3 types of "Gargoyles" episodes. #1- Is good beyond belief. It's the Pilot episodes, Macbeth episodes, many flashback episodes, and a few individual character episodes. #2- is okay. Mostly what you'd call regular episodes... which are okay but nothing special. Like a typical week-end stand alone episode. #3- are filler episodes (in their defense, their background often comes back and produce very good episodes) that are just straight out boring. But the show is nothing less than a masterpiece. I don't remember season three with the hooded hammer guys. Probably didn't watch that one. Seems I didn't miss much afterall. Thanks for the Retrospective. How I would wish for a great show like this now, untainted by SJW politics and other studio interference.
Huh..I just realized that Brookyln feels a lot like a better written Rodimus Prime, especially during the world tour when he had to take leadership during Goliath's absence. At first he isn't confident in his ability but slowly grows into and accepts the burden of leadership and like how Rodimus was as Hot Rod, Brooklyn also has the high spirited attitude but isn't as reckless.

Goliath and Elisa always reminded me of Vincent and Catherine from the 87 Beauty and the Beast series
Yeah ☺
Two beautiful & intelligent women of the law becoming romantically involved with unconventionally attractive individuals that were both sensitive & tough
they always reminded me of belle and beast from the 1991 beauty and the beast film
If you build it they will come can't wait for the 3rd part keep it up👍🏼
a gargoyles video? in ...2019...?
Is this what happiness feels like ( TT u TT )?
Also coldstone, coldfire and coldsteel's real names and their relationship is a reference to the Shakespearean play "the tragedy of Othello, the moor of venice"; othello (coldstone), desdemona (coldfire) and iago (coldsteel)
Oooh! I didn't know that. Thank you! I see them so differently now.
I’ll always love Gargoyles it’s one of my fondest memories as a teenager
Jalapenia, this was a spicy video. Keep it up!
All jokes aside, the cancellation of the New Olympians really hit me hard so thanks for that.
Wow dude you did a great job on this review. People can tell you really put your heart into this
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
31:41 - Did he just say 'Kinky' in a Disney show?
Best use of "Careless Whisper" in a UA-cam video review? Definitely.
I loved this show. I wish they would make more.
I wish they would make more back in '96. I do not want them to make more now. Even with Greg at the helm, he's lost his marbles.. I don't want another Young Justice.
I love gargoyles it was such a great show and really awesome
You know how excitedly giddy I am when I saw the thumbnail of the video by chance on your channel.
I really liked Puck he was my fav character from the fairy realm being a trickster just like the MCU's Loki only not out to destroy the world
But Demona kicked Elisa's butt in the episode "high noon" so she is clearly the better woman!
@@danielschmitt2299 Um I remember Elisa kicking Demona's butt a couple of times. Especially when Demona was human.
the theme makes me want to weep my favorite show growing up. I was legit disappointed that i wasn't born a gargoyle LOL. I used to record eps and rewatch them :)
One rather obscure animated show from the 90s I've never seen mentioned by any UA-cam reviewer was *"The Legend of Calamity Jane."*
It was briefly on the the WB network (not sure if it was part of the "Kids WB" lineup) and basically a western made to look like a Spaghetti Western with a female hero as the star. It was really a mixed bag in my opinion but still noteworthy for being an original work and having it's own unique style.
This video was a long time coming! Great job.
This show was so good. Loved it when I was a kid.
In The Episode City of Stone those people she smashed they would be just mush when the spell was broken nobody wants to talk about that
Demona can be an alternative protagonist, she is a very complicated character, and her experience is very brilliant.
"But that's just a theory, a Gargoyle theory..." teheheh
I'm going to re-watch these this week and weekend.
I'm saddened I've never seen this, it looks amazing and what a wonderful concept
”Let me guess, your favorite show?”
”It was, and it was beautiful.”
Outstanding Work!!!!! My fav cartoon series as a kid. Your explanations and humor work great!!!!
This season three review should be really good I think it’s going to be when your first videos we just talk about something that you despise
You wanna see something I despise, check out my ReBoot: The Guardian Code videos :P

Gargoyles is about the exact fact that there are no true villains only selfish jaded anti-heroes.
Season 3 took place in the Clan Building comic series that Weissman wrote.
"Clan Building" was actual hot garbage.
Love the videos, and, I know it's a little out of your wheelhouse, could you touch on the canon comic continuation/alternate season 3 of gargoyles. They have great stories and got a rough treatment.
I will be touching on them briefly in my season three video
Love your videos man. Any thoughts on reviewing the Street Sharks??
@@BullSession what do you think of superhuman samurai syber squad?
@@BullSession you should also do a video of Biker Mice from Mars both the original and the 2006 one , all the Ghostbusters cartoons and the mummies.
"Give it to me Goliath"
"Put it in my hand!"
Oh Elisa, you and every other fangirl/boy
I would love to see a full length movie of “Gargoyles”. The movie could use motion capture and real human beings, the way it’s used in “Avatar”.
Disney ,with their franchises, should drop a CGI live action movie and then a series or two the year after....with Greg Weisman running some things.
Did he just call Demona, a "secondary villain character"?
I'm currently watching season two, and damn is it LOOONG!
Goliath insists on treating the whole clan as Angela’s parents. The whole clan (not counting the trio and older Hudson) are dead. He seems to have forgotten that.
Excellent use of that ReBoot clip!
As an English teacher, I'm a little surprised you missed out on the Othello conceit in the episodes with Coldstone.
haha, sorry if I was unclear. I'm not an English teacher; Greg Weisman was one. I don't think I've ever read Othello.
Oh. This season also has Othello as the three spirits in cold stone are named Othello, Desdemona, and Iago respectively
17:21 will forever remind me of soul reaver series
34:05 I got so off-guard by that.. 😂😂
Goliath:"Why is that man sitting backwards on that horse?" :P
lmfao this is some top tier Disney tin foil. I love it :p
17:20
Damn, that’s deep.
My favorite story arc was "The City of Stone". Just epic !
11:50 Really cracks me up that she ask him and he's not sure how to answer honestly.😂
I know Greg is continuing the story in comic book form but wish they brought this continuing story in animation
I'll make the joke! Elisa wants Goliath's rock hard jalapeno!
Good comments , it was a good show in that time. Like many other shows are gone..... Reboot , shadowriders, gargoyle , spiderman the new animated series. That was the best.
i really loved fox and her birthmark watching as a kid.
Holy fuck the animation in Future Tense is so stunningly good.
Man, some of that animation is really good.
If he is the same Aurthur then he manned the fuck up well.
33:59
Don’t know which voice is funnier, Her or when he did Matrix’s voice when he did ReBoot Season 3.
The first episode I ever saw was Vows.
The second I saw was City of Stone I - IV.....I was hooked right then and there.
being long is good, it means you have a lot of ideas for this.
