I still find myself coming back to this track multiple times each year. The original is such an underrated funky track that isn't talked about enough and it was such a WONDERFUL surprise getting a cover of it in a unique style. Every single one of them brings their A-game. All incredibly talented and the final result is one of the best covers I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. LOVE this one!
It's awesome that funky groove has spread all over the world and as a result we receive a gift such as this Funky, Super clean Groove. I especially love the addition of the traditional Japanese instrument!! Tokyo Groove Jyoshi is living proof that funky soul will always live on.
Totally agree about the original being underrated. I don't people appreciate how hard it is to play Francis Rocco Prestia's bass line, the way he plays it (with the finger muting) at the speed he plays it. Makes it hard for a band to cover for live shows - e.g. weddings. Believe me, my band took a crack at it. As bassist, I was the limiting factor.
I bow to the eternal deities of music for letting me be on the planet long enough to find and take joy from the talents of these amazing ladies! I partied my way through 70s funk and loved it. who knew that it would come back from the great beyond?
My GOODNESS what a fat groove. That drummer and bass player have a clock that Rolex even looses time to!!!! I am totally blown away by this jam! Thanks for posting.
It's awesome that funky groove has spread all over the world and as a result we receive a gift such as this Funky, Super clean Groove. And because of that, it's got me picking up my old bass and working to lay it down. I especially love the addition of the traditional Japanese instrument!! Tokyo Groove Jyoshi is living proof that funky soul will always live on.
These ladies are amazing I love how they combine jazz and rock with their own style I'm a drummer myself and the lady drummer is truly amazing one of the best I've seen
These people are OFF THE HOOK. Everyone is awesome (including prod crew) and the level of coordination and tightness is insane. All the choruses are high energy and precise. The addition of the shamisen for "local color" is damn brilliant. A great, cheeky nod to a funk classic. Also, a nod to my fellow commenters for being mostly classy ;-)
"What Is Hip" has been one of my favorite songs since I was a teenager and the late Rocco Prestia is one of my bass player idols; one of my prized possessions is a T-shirt with the first page of the "What Is Hip" score on it that Rocco autographed. What I'm saying is that I take "What Is Hip" seriously -- and I gotta say, this is the COOLEST EVER cover of it that I've come across! Amazing job, ladies!
The musicianship is superlative!! The arrangements exciting & fresh. But what I love the most?? U folks are just having so much fun!! Thank you, thank you. And PLEASE don't stop. You're fabulous
The whole group is awesome.. they could have opened up the Olympics.. i like the fusion of japanese music, specifically the koto with Jazz/pop/funk great job girls!
I know exactly what you mean. I first got turned onto the Japanese improvisation of jazz 'n funk by the Seatbelts (who performed "The Real Folk Blues" in the Cowboy Bebop anime) and loved the mix and inescapable sentiments of several cultures coming together for a kickass sound. The addition of the electrified shamisen instrument in this version is literally "off the hook". These musicians were performing in another stratosphere when they cut this.
.........you sure got quite a grandma........and i am positive her soul is now resting in peace. Amen!! I wish i had a grandma like yours. Love this group!!
I found this across my UA-cam feed after wanting to listen to Tower of Power and I'll be got damn!!! This is amazing... The bass player is going off!!!! Kudos!!! This is simply Bliss!!!!!
Well.... this just kicks ass and takes names, doesn't it? All 4 of 'em... these ladies are total badasses when it comes to holding down a groove. Wow... just blown away after an initial viewing. Outstanding musicianship across the board.
They are killing it !!!! Too good, one of Tower Of Power most funky tune with a traditional Japanese flavor, can't beat that. I am very impressed by the bass player !!!
This has got to be one of the most INCREDIBLY POWERFUL sections in rock music video for all time... starting at about 3:20 until the drums come in... that bass solo is OTHERWORLDLY... if anyone knows these ladies... would LOVE to put that section in a/my movie... (heck, anyone would)... it needs to be seen...AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. I wrote a movie on HENDRIX for SHOWTIME... did not turn out as well as I wanted... but... lotta research, lotta looks at "stuff" music... THESE LADIES ABSOLUTELY KILL IT with this piece... hitting the max right before and during the bass player. EPIC! I "LIKE" JAZZ... BUT I "LOVE" THIS!...

EXCELLENT rendition of the Tower of Power hit!!! These ladies are definitely worth paying to see.

Classic man of culture comment
Lolex, Lolex...
'loses' you git.
Came for the thumbnail, stayed for the incredible talent. These girls have got it all going on here, the groove is phenomenal. Wonderful stuff.
Man, what a great chart! Juna tore it up on bass, and Yuriko's drum solo was spot-on. Emi put the "fun" in funky, and Shinobu is a virtuoso.
WOW!!! Are you kidding me? I love it when they all smile! Who wouldn't have fun playing like that!!
This is sick! What a cool sound. Funky funky funky! And the bass is out of this orbit..!
True about the bassist!
this is only a cover! this piece is from "Tower of Power" together with a bass-line.
@@pashan.874 Yes, I know. I have been listening to TOP for a few years now.
Doesn't hurt she's total fox, and could kick any one of our asses. I'm all in

Scammers!! Get a virus as well.
That's because this is NOT a live mix. It is a studio mix they're playing in sync with live, unplugged. Notice nothing is plugged in.

In this day and age they could be using wireless transmitters but I don't see them wearing wireless "in-ear" monitors.
But how does she pick those strings with a windshield ice scraper
The woman playing her native strings is out of this world. Thanks.
I’m in love with the Bass Player!!!😍
Move over, so I am, and I have been for a few years now
Everyone talking about the bass, and fair enough, it’s a bass channel. Yes, and that drum solo was sick.
GOD DAMN MAN. LET THEM MAKE IT. THEY ARE PROBABLY ALMOST AS GOOD AS YOUR BAND...IJS
Er body playing fa sho' son! No joke intended, that are wearing those axes out!
It doesn't hurt that the bass player, Juna Serita, is ridiculously hot, on top of playing like that. But yeah, they're all impressive.
Aside from the sweet and groovy solo, that drummer lays down a nasty pocket, especially during all the little bridges.
That Japanese banjo is pretty amazing as well.
Juna is killing it on bass! 🔥
They all great very attractive anybody kno much bout them

That bass line was wild! I can't even imagine slap and plucking on that level.
This made me smile. The talent and the tightness of their performance. And that they are having fun!
LOVE this!
Not sure how the UA-cam algorithm works but was sure surprised when I clicked on the video. These girls are unbelievable. Excellent performance!
No shit I ran up on this landmine willingly. What a great ride. These are fuck8ng bad ass
i saw boobs on the thumbnail and yolo clicked. but this is much more than boobs. its like "boobs +"
So beautiful to hear the power of a bass guitar. So often overlooked as a vital part of a band.
The showwomanship, the sound, the mixing, just fantastic.
That’s the best rendition of that song since I’ve heard the original. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
That bass line is so exciting. All of you are technically excellent and inspiring.
"What Is Hip" has been one of my favorite songs since I was a teenager and the late Rocco Prestia is one of my bass player idols; one of my prized possessions is a T-shirt with the first page of the "What Is Hip" score on it that Rocco autographed. Richard, I've got that shirt also! I still wear it once in a while. No Rocco signature though. 😟
Good Grief! Gorgeous and has groove like no other??!! Bass line was killing it with an awesome band next to her!
L’utilisation du shamisen est une trouvaille excellente ! Bravo les filles ! Vous êtes formidables.
That bass player, man can she jam. Also she’s quite lovely. They’re all talented.
@Stig Weard Understatement is right!
She is HELLA FINE!

These ladies are incredible and impeccable musicians. I think I'm in love with the bassist😍
they were session musicians , that usually means good.
The whole group is awesome.. they could have opened up the Olympics.. i like the fusion of japanese music, specifically the koto with Jazz/pop/funk great job girls!
Not a koto, a shamisen

I am amazed! I want to hear more from this group. That groove is so funky you can smell it (Coined by Buddy Guy)!
I love listening to your music, my favorite is the drummer she has a perfect timing well done
All I could do was smile, very cool stuff. Something seriously hot about this jam.
This had the potential to be just weird, but...how good is this! Got a huge grin watching this. Brilliant groove.
I love the bassist she is amazing.
Old soldier , army days in the seventies when Tower of Power came out I feel good thank you ladies you nailed it . Numbed with excitement !
Favorite song by my favorite funk band. Now I have a new favorite version. I am in awe of these women’s soul and musicianship.
Holy SH!T! I ran across this accidentally and What is Hip is one of my favorite tracks but this cover? DAYYUM!
Awesome surprise. These musicians are fanatic! That shimasen player is amazing as are the rest.
What an amazing jam. Interesting with the shamisen along with the western music. My fellow bass player is funking it up on that bass .I'm jealous!
My dear lord!this is amazing,incredible
My grandmother once told me: "You can't go wrong with four hot Japanese chicks playing funk music." RIP, Grandma.
My grandmother used to say the same thing.
Must be a granny thing, mine often said this.
My grannies x 2 rose from their graves when they heard this. Reminded them of Khruangbin, they said, but perhaps the other way round. Refreshing...
The bass player is from Thailand but don’t matter the Asian funk lives on
.........you sure got quite a grandma........and i am positive her soul is now resting in peace. Amen!! I wish i had a grandma like yours. Love this group!!
Four fantastic musicians!!!!! I never tire of this
I did not see that comin' love the bass player. You all rock
Damn, how do you factor in a traditional Japanese string instrument to carry the melody? Awesome.

Bass is thrilling! Gorgeous tune!
That was extremely hip. Fantastic job girls.
Bass player is really good but I prefer the finger technique. It makes for cleaner 16th notes on the runs. JMO!
This is the quality content I'm looking for on UA-cam
Such a great performance with shamisen as the lead. They are so talented (and beautiful).
