Making their debut on the channel to-NIGHT, we have Tokyo Groove Jyoshi with their cover of a song by Tower Of Power entitled "What Is Hip?". FULL DISCLOSURE: I am familiar with the original version of this song by the original artist/band. However, I have never heard this cover. Therefore I will not be reacting to, evaluating, or scoring the original song in any way. I will ONLY be reacting to, evaluating, and scoring this particular cover of the song. The bass player name is Juna Serita. I knew you would love her playing. She is one of my favorite bassists. The keyboardist is Emi Kanazashi and drummer is Yuriko Seki. Tokyo Grove Jiyoshi is an awesome grove band that I have been a fan of for quite awhile now and I hope someone lays down another request for them for you in the future. I do not know the shamsin player, but she was awesome too. It was fun to watch you listen to this one and good on you homegnome for requesting it. Great reaction David, keep having fun.
I saw this band for the first time a couple of days ago and although my preferences are more on the rock side, Iwas blown away by the drive , precision and musicality of this band
Great choice by HomeGnome. Love this band. How can they go wrong when all the members are so good and they have the fantastic Juna Serita as their bassist. Juna has quite a few projects and is the bassist for another great jazz influenced band the Jazz Avengers. This has a 4 person brass section as well as Juna on bass and also has Senri Kawaguchi (one of the best drummers around in the world) on drums.

Great suggestion! After literally seeing thousands of UA-cam videos, you are the first one, who addresses an issue, that bothered me with all the other UA-camrs: they wanted me to like their content and subscribe, before I actually saw it. That always seemed to be very unreasonable to me. I never subscribed, before seeing their content.
This song was the introduction to JUNA SERITA for many of us. The whole cover is great but she is the standout. She is currently with a band called MUSES.

I’m 40 and grew up in a house with tower speakers by the album player, and Tower or Power played nonstop. I can hear the vocals in their cover in my head.

I read that Tokyo Groove started from a group of studio musicians. All of their songs are great.
Speaking as a bass player, Juna's obviously the instantly obvious star of the show. But the shamisen player and her rock star moves were the bomb. I like the way she started her solo in the last bar of the keyboard player's solo. It's so much fun when the different elements of a song blend together.
OK, I couldn't make it all the way through your reaction before 'smashing' the LIKE button.... but if it makes you feel any better, it's Not About You 😅😂😊 ...It's about how everytime I listen to them I have the same reaction (w/a tear in my eyes as well). I like their cover version with Harumo (tenor sax) as well. I do thank you for bringing in the knowledge and contrast and smilarities to the original Tower of Power versions.
Hope you do some more reactions on some of their other collab groups and their covers and originals.
Japan has so many fine female musicians, and maybe more in jazz/jazz-fusion than any other genre. In fact, they can readily move among genres, as all the musicians in this vdo have. Btw, Juna Serita on bass was once the bandmate of Tamu (now of Nemophila) in a band called Soramimi. Juna has since moved on from TGJ, but she was backing keyboardist Emi at a show in August.
She also sometimes plays for Muses, another great band I like. They have just put up a new video on PoppinRecords Muses：Jet Stream / Muses Live Version 19 minutes long and they all get the opportunity to do a solo
Juna actually played with Emi again today (Juna on sax from what I can see) together with the other TGJ members during a Juna's Session live she did (still available as a VOD for a week). I still need to watch the live session (probably tomorrow), but I know it's going to be great. Yes, Juna is still learning sax and she isn't even close to as good as the players she typically plays with, but them together is always great and I have a lot of respect for her playing sax live while she is still learning, she certainly does a good job.
I've long been a fan of Rie of Muses. The current TGJ bassist Rina Hoshino has a long association with Rie, and of course Juna plays in Muses. For quite a few years Rie has done instrumental gigs at Club Blue Mood, the most recent one of which I saw was in August with both Senri Kawaguchi and Kanade Sato on drums, Juna, and Yoshiko Ikejiri on keyboards, which included a predictable and excellent drum battle. Another Rie gig I saw a bit before that was a stop on a brief Jeff Beck tribute tour she did, with Senri drums, Mitsuru Sutoh bass, and the underrated Kumi Adachi guitar. As for Juna's Session, regrettably Vol. 10-last night Japan time, with TGJ-will be the last (at least for quite a while).

Thanks for that info. Also, it's a shame the Juna's Sessions are done for now, but it is what it is. Luckily enough I was able to catch all of them via stream (well after I watch the latest one tomorrow). It was great to hear her explore multiple different styles of music with a lot of talented musicians. I have discovered a couple of them through that actually and bought a couple of their albums, so it helped out those musicians as well.

Juna left TGJ and is involved in several other projects including Muses and Jazz Avengers. She is called "the Princess of Funk" and is easily one of my favorite bassists ever. Great reaction!

Sadly TGJ don't get nearly the kudos they deserve for such truly talented musicians - probably because it's not Rock or Metal . The use of the shamisen really is a stroke of true genius - they've actually done a " Twin Bass " version if you're interested in watching it .

I am glad to see you enjoy top session musicians get together and play for themselves and not for someone else. Now you should listen to The Jazz Avengers. Eight ladies with four saxophones out front. Same bass player and one of the greatest drummers playing today. Just listen for yourself if nothing else. They will blow your socks off! Good review.

What makes a good cover? A note-for-note mimic of the original? Maybe. Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" and Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" are certainly more famous than Carl Perkins' or Otis Redding's. Could it be a complete re-work that completely reinterpretes a song? Could be. Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash's "Hurt" completely changed the meanings of those songs. What is hip? Definitely what's going down in Tokyo these days, Tokyo Groove Joshi.

This might be a new favorite reaction from you. Not only was the cover amazing, but your comments were seriously funny. Somebody needs to clip 'This is fire'. Can't believe how the score played out on my viewing too: 'I'm going to make you wait ten more minutes... On a scale of 1-10, I give that a 9 point four'... LOL. Growing up, I mostly heard a lot of rock, metal, and jazz but not funk, so I was unfamiliar with the original. Definitely have to check Tower of Power out too.
Start off with their album "Live And In Living Color". It's a live EP, and their performance was outstanding.

Now that I've heard the original, I see what you mean about TGJ being able to cover all the key elements that they did. Both versions are incredible. What Is Hip and Knock Yourself Out have been my faves so far from ToP.

It always amazes me that different types of music reach across international borders. Especially when they can express the feel and groove of that music that their nationality isn't known for. Another example would be some of Britain's finest love for blues and Motown. You can only wonder, "how the heck did this happen?"
That said, these ladies were putting down a groove! And the funk and the feel was all there. Glad you had fun with this!
