Well done for tackling the project to share with us even though you knew you don't enjoy pastels. I mainly use pastels, in many ways I love it but for me the problem is storing them safely/non messily and framing/transporting is a pain because of the dust. But I love the vibrance and speed! I want to try painting acrylics/oils but I might need to wait to get into it more seriously until I'm past the baby/toddler stage of often needing to drop what I'm doing and parent even at night. That's another benefit of pastels and pencils, you can leave everything sitting and come back to it without incident. Whereas paint might dry etc.
I do like how the sunset was done. Very nice strong colors. I'm not a big fan of soft pastels myself for the same reasons but I do like oils. I send them more interesting to work with.
Hi! You might want to try “Gloves in a Bottle” when you are doing any pastels or charcoal, or any “finger-messy” media. It’s available on Amazon, and it is a very silky-smooth lotion that, once dried, creates a barrier layer between your akin and the media. It does not dry the skin out, and really feels just lovely. It helps with clean-up later, which is awesome for nail-beds!! But I thought for you it might also mitigate that drying feeling of pastels on your fingers. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing your expertise and talent!
I love pastell it's so nice to get something done really fast some time and the reason for the big mess is the paper. Pastells work best on sanded papers.
I hope everything goes super well with the surgery and recovery is easier and quicker that you expect. You've really been through the wringer this year! I hope your fibro is staying under control with all of this crap... I know stress is terrible for my CFS. Remember to meditate, relax, get help for stuff - you know the drill! And don't worry about us out here in computer-land and push yourself too hard, we will be here when you get back!!
Honesty is the best policy. Because of it I am going to get out my set this weekend and work on a piece. But I also would rather be painting with a brush. Lol🎨😎
I bought a set of pastels and pastel pencils in the hopes that I can get over the same "nails on a chalkboard" effect that you describe. Sometimes I even get it with blending stumps on paper, some days I'm more sensitive to it than others. I plan on trying to use disposable gloves if I can handle the texture on my fingers, but hopefully the pastel pencils will distance my finger tips from the powder somewhat!
super lightweight cotton gloves work well for me - a bunch of pairs so as one gets messy I throw it in a box to wash and put on another one. I hate the icky plastic gloves on my hands.
I feel much the same about pastels; I used to use them when I was younger because I loved the results, and didn't mind the dry, powdery feel on my hands. However, I could not stand the messiness, and the fact that, when you start using them, you can't even scratch your nose without leaving smudges on yourself. No rubbing your face, no standing up for a second to answer the door, no making or sipping a cup of tea -- not without getting smears of color all over everything in sight Working with pastels was a bit like doing an EVA on the international space station: you commit to doing nothing but that for the next hour at least, and any deviation requires major gear-shifting. Pity it looks so nice, is so fun, and blends so well ...
Hey Lisa. have you ever seen one of Jason Morgan's pastel videos? The way he works creates very little mess and the Pastelmat paper he uses does tends to create very little dust, especialy in conjunction with Pan Pastels. I've been using his techniques for a while now and I don't think I used my fingers to blend once. I use stumps and sofft tools or simply the pastels themselves. I do get some powder on my fingers from the sticks themselves though, but for the most part I use pastel pencils. I'm sure you could do entire paintings with Pan Pastels and pastel pencils on Pastelmat paper and not get a single spec of powder on your fingers.
Lisa, even though you rushed through it, it ended looking really good! You're such a great artist!!!!! I would like to know if you have a tutorial of how to make a lens flare effect in acrylics/ oils. And if you don't, could you consider to make one sometime soon? It would be so great! Thank you so much for your content.
Lisa, I use pastels & love them....but I usually wear a glove on my hand most times, plus you can also get hand cream from the auto spares shops that you put on your hands like hand cream & it helps protect your skin & I find that it takes away that dry feeling on my hands. That also makes it very easy to get the pigment off your hands .... also sanded paper takes more of the pastel. There is also pan pastels which I have that are compressed & makes very little dust at all & you use the soft tools with those..... maybe next time you try them wear a glove so you don’t get that yukky dry feeling 😁😁😁
Hi lachri!!im kindof a beginner in art...i dont know....if i ma or not because i have been doing it for so long...but anyway do you think i should go to art school when i get older??becaus ei want to have a career as art...Btw i love you very much!
So tell us how you really feel about pastels! Lol. They’re definitely not for everyone. I’m a pastelist and absolutely love the medium. Pastelmat eliminates almost all dust as does pastel pencils! Also, many pastelists, like me, don’t blend. Blending crushes the crystals and leaves the pigment dull. Loses luminosity! Plus it makes a dusty mess that shouldn’t be inhaled. Sanded paper also makes it less messy. Surprised art box didn’t send more appropriate paper for this project. I also break my pastels to a more “paintable” size and remove the paper. Use the side. Covers more area. Allows for more colors to be lightly applied over each other for more depth and interest. Watch Marla Baggetta, Karen Margulis, or Bethany Fields youtubes for traditional techniques.
I absolutly can not stand dirty or sticky hands, however in the garden I do not mind getting soil on my hands at all, weird! good luck for monday I hope you get a good result
just watching the pastels being used (the dust…) makes me want to go scrub my hands and arms and vacuum everything. Ugh, the dust! I feel the same way you do about them.
OMG i can feel the pain you're feeling. :) Ahahah When i saw the title of the video i was really surprised because i know how you feel about pastels and the mess they make. I am really into pastels for the last few months so i had to watch this. I'ts almost a sin how you are treating those pastels :) sennelier are expensive and wonderful pastels :) i thought it was funny to see how you treated them vs how i treat them. You couldn't care less how they would break or how much you were using them. Me, i am always very careful and try to make them last. :P i smiled through all the video and i am really proud that you managed to spend 20 mints on this! :P The worst is gone. Now relax Lisa! Breathe! :)*
Its definitely a great idea to see if you love a medium before investing tons of $$. I completely understand they're not for you and that's totally ok, you can't rock every medium you try lol :) anyone considering pastels though pastelmat will eliminate around 98% off all that dust, pastel pencils are great so you don't have super messy feeling on your hands and allow you to achieve a huge amount of details, and colour shaper (silicon paint brush like tools) allow you to blend a variety of textures without your fingers :) happy painting!! :) and good luck with your surgery :)
Yeah I've seen a few artists use pan pastels so they don't have to hold the chalk and do lovely work with them. They are pretty expensive though and I agree about the utensils. The hydrophobic sponge tools look great for blending though and I think I need to buy a couple to play with and see if I like it.
Rebecca Hails Panpastels are definitely awesome, they are expensive but they go a long way, and those sofft tools are amazing, you can use them with any pastels and I do, but I especially love pastel pencils for details and panpastels for underpainting and backgrounds :)
I have the exact same problem with the dry hands! It's the reason I don't use pastels or charcoal. I also am not fond of the sound they make on the paper, makes me cringe haha!
I don't like the sound either haha. I didn't want to list out all of my issues in one video for fear that someone would try and medicate me for it lol.
I'm the same way, don't like the sound, the mess, it touching my skin and the way the pencil/stick feels in my hand when it's scratching on the paper... *shivers* lol
I know what you mean about not liking pastels because of texture. That powdery scrapie dryness bugs me so much. Just watching I might have to put on a layer of hand cream. Besides I like painting and doing colored pencil stuff so much I don't have a desire for pastel right now.Kind of a messy artist here anyhow. As careful and deliberate as i try to be , I walk away finding paint on my eyebrows sometimes. I enjoy seeing your works so much. Your work inspired me to use colored pencils again and even have ventured into other mediums. Also, these smart art boxes look like pockets of inspiration.(especially if you want to try all the things) I look forward to seeing more of your works.
This is so funny because I totally get how you feel about that chalky feeling on my hands! Makes me cringe! It's just one of those things that irks me. Glad I'm not the only 'weird' one. (Weird is good, btw.) ;)
I completely understand that you don't like soft pastels. I love them, along with oil painting. On the other hand I really dislike acrylics even though many people love them. They just dry way to fast. And I find coloured pencils too slow. 😂😂 Each person has the mediums that work for them. I like that use these mediums even when you don't care for them. It's nice. ☺
Oh Lisa! I love your videos, have for a few years now. Asked you about pastels during one of your live demos last year and you shuddered, lol. I've gotten pretty good at pastel in the past 2 years. I don't have videos, but check me out at @lynellenromero. Your technique is pressing too hard, too many layers = mud. Your instincts are right, those tortillions don't work, they just lift it off. It's mostly a finger blended, lots of lotion medium. Love you to the moon and back!!
LOL....you crack me up. I can't stand the feel of popsicle sticks in my mouth it totally freaks me out. So why don't you use gloves with pastels and use a hand held vacuum to clean up while you are working with them? Just thought it might be better than feeling the chalk on your hands and dealing with the chalk mess.
Oh, me too with the popsicle sticks!!! Also, wet washcloths, the sound of bare feet on carpet, anything at all touching my throat . . . Yeah, we all have our 'things' don't we LOL!
Just a note, you keep saying "normal" people won't have issues with the pastels.... after this much time do you really believe most of us that follow you fall into the "normal" category??? Just asking...LOL I know i certainly don't!!
Well done for tackling the project to share with us even though you knew you don't enjoy pastels.

Good luck on your surgery! And have a speedy recovery! I'm sending love and positive energy your way! ♥
Thanks :D

I have some, it isnt enough for me :P
I love pastels! Super yummy colors in your painting, and spot on hints. Thanks for sharing this video 👩🎨

Cuedos to you for finishing this

If gloves don't bother you then it should be a great solution!

Yes, I'm on his patreon :D He does amazing work with pastels! Still not the medium for me though :P

That would be a good tutorial!
This was fun... I feel the same way... but add the scritching noise it makes when you’re using them! 😃
Lisa, I use pastels & love them....but I usually wear a glove on my hand most times, plus you can also get hand cream from the auto spares shops that you put on your hands like hand cream & it helps protect your skin & I find that it takes away that dry feeling on my hands. Lachri Fine Art yep I understand I am not too keen either when it’s really hot, that’s when I use the hand cream 😁
Hi, does oil pastels gives you the same strange feeling as soft pastel? Thanks.
Hi lachri!!im kindof a beginner in art...i dont know....if i ma or not because i have been doing it for so long...but anyway do you think i should go to art school when i get older??becaus ei want to have a career as art...Btw i love you very much!
I Love all pastels, but I too hate the mess, that's why I love neocolor2
Praying all goes well with surgery and recovery.
Thank you :D

Good tips :)
Great video Lisa! 😁 When I got the box I was wondering how you would be handling it...lol 😉
LOL I had to stop and wash my hands 3 times and reapply hand lotion during this 20 minute project!
I absolutly can not stand dirty or sticky hands, however in the garden I do not mind getting soil on my hands at all, weird! good luck for monday I hope you get a good result
LOL I have to rinse my hands off frequently when I repot or plant plants :D I don't like the dirt there either, but it's not nearly as bad as pastels!
just watching the pastels being used (the dust…) makes me want to go scrub my hands and arms and vacuum everything. Ugh, the dust! I feel the same way you do about them.
LOL
Off topic....but question... What do you use to separate your hand off the paper....better then wax paper...? Please help
Glassine :)
It’s nice that someone shares my feelings for pastels. They’re just so blocky and messy and hard to get detail, I just can’t.
OMG i can feel the pain you're feeling. :) Ahahah When i saw the title of the video i was really surprised because i know how you feel about pastels and the mess they make. Thank you so much. I had this half glove thing...hate it.
I have one of those that I use for digital painting, that wouldn't help me much here, it would just smudge my already messy work lol.
I have the exact same problem with the dry hands! It's the reason I don't use pastels or charcoal. I also am not fond of the sound they make on the paper, makes me cringe haha!

LOL ear plugs and baby wipes :p and have fun!
You would be better trying pan pastels (no mess, no dust) and pastel pencils for details (no mess, no dust.)
OOOOR I could just use colored pencils which are perfect for me :P
Give it up +Kyomii. Pastels are Lisa's pet peeve lol Although I'm curious to see what she has to say about panpastels...
OOOR wear gloves. 👈☺👉
I know what you mean about not liking pastels because of texture. That powdery scrapie dryness bugs me so much. Just watching I might have to put on a layer of hand cream. Yes, have you ever tried pastel pencils? Think you may like them. I don't care for soft pastels for the same reason!
I have, and I don't :)
Sanded paper you don't have all that dust :)
:)
Sanded paper would yield much less dust.
I completely understand that you don't like soft pastels. I love them, along with oil painting. On the other hand I really dislike acrylics even though many people love them. They just dry way to fast. And I find coloured pencils too slow. 😂😂
Each person has the mediums that work for them. I like that use these mediums even when you don't care for them. It's nice. ☺
Have you tried gloves in a bottle?
It might help with the dry feeling. I hate that feeling too but pastels are sooo fun
Yeah, doesn't fix the problem for me :)
You could wear gloves to blend the pastel. Zaria Lynn does that. It allows for you to still feel the paper but also not touch it.
I don't like how gloves feel on my hands >
god do kakapo next pls
I think I'm the opposite, I'm totally cool with pastels, but the airbrushing and mask and all that... can't do it.
Oh Lisa! I love your videos, have for a few years now. Asked you about pastels during one of your live demos last year and you shuddered, lol. I've gotten pretty good at pastel in the past 2 years.
