I'm so new that I'm literally S H OO K ET H when you said that shading uses complementary color, then u use green to shade on the red????!?!? THATS AWESOME THANKS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE WHOAAA✨✨

Yes, your painting will stay vibrant using complimentary colors for shading. A color wheel is very helpful in deciding what colors to use. Your local craft store should have it. I think pastel is a wonderful medium to paint with. I’ve made lots of mistakes but that’s ok. This is a great video. I just love how quickly he applies the color and how fabulous the painting is😁.

Less cheering please, it depends what medium you're using, the object of the painting and generally the way you're painting and the result you want to get. It's not a unmovable rule like that you gotta stop at the stop signal.
It was right in this kind of painting/ drawing.

I thought shading was supposed to use the color of the surrounding background, like it's a mirror almost, but that was for skin specifically maybe.

I have spent decades in the sciences. Recently I have tried Art for her first time since my youth. After trying many mediums, soft pastels are my favourite. ‘Simplicity’ in both science and art is so often the best. Technically I am not a good artist however my soft pastels make me ‘feel’ like a great artist. As a lefty with poor handwriting I find art a great equalizer.

The simple Apple drawing is great. I followed the video and produced a quite nice result... not as good as you. But I'm happy with it :)

I wandered away from my usual pastel paper, and thought I'd give the La Carte paper a try. I found that the La Carte paper holds very few layers of pastel, which is contrary to the claims Sennelier makes about the paper. I also found out that when I brushed water over the top of the pastels on the paper in order to create a watercolor effect, the water wore away the fibers and left a huge unrepairable white splotch on the paper.

Thank you for such a gentle and lovely voice with accent. MMM French accent always reminds me of food. I know why however that is another story. After dusting off the pastels January 1 and deciding to make a picture, at least one, everyday. Then I would watch how it is done. The spreading of the colour is so relaxing. Deep rich intense colour. Colour heals. May all who venture into the land of pastels be healed with the colours.

when you top the yellow with the red, notice how he leaves an area without coverage. this allows the image to create depth once you blend in the colors. otherwise, it would look like a 2d drawing

OK, ok for basic instruction - but - the VALUES are so wrong - the leaf and apple should be so much darker - that's what's so hard about pastels, I think, getting good color matches - you need a thousand sticks!
