Excellent video...been using pastels for years, and once I discovered Unison, I never looked back..not cheap but I still feel you get what you pay for. Fantastic range and marvellous subtle colours.
I've come back to this video many times and watched it at full length each time. I am so inspired by your beautiful artwork and I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your knowledge and expertise. I am still unsure about which unison set to purchase as there are so many choices. I want to do portraits but I also want to do botanical so I may have to purchase two sets. LOL! Goodness!
Thankyou. Have you in fact been to the the Unison Colour website? There are now Blogs and articles on and by all their associate artists and will, also, soon be films / lessons for sale to download. I am now one of them but information by me will take a little time to come through yet. Regarding pastel sets please go to my website peterwoodarts.com where I now offer my own "world" set of 72 at £230.00 and my travel set of 18 at £65.00 . I am not aware of ANYONE selling them more cheaply!
Hello! I've added Unisons to my palette for the first time (they've arrived from the UK just today, in fact) and I look forward to using them. Thank you very much for your videos. I thought the hard pastels were best used for the underpainting but I'm beginning to think after watching this video that it would depend on the toothiness of the paper. Is that the right assumption? I use Nupastel first, Rembrandts for most of the painting, and will now incorporate the Unisons. I'll experiment. What are your thoughts? Thanks so much for sharing your talent and insight. Peace
I only use other pastels or harder and cheaper pastels when I have to. E.g. when bright fluorescent colours are required. The. S.A.A. also produce a good range of very good soft pastels. Otherwise, for me, the unisons will do a virtually all I require! Whether alone or over mixed medium, watercolour, acrylics etc. As you see, they also blend very well with water. I am sure that you will enjoy using them a lot and will not be surprised if you end up purchasing more!
Thanks to you, also, for your feedback. By all means send me some shots of the work you do with them, later? I have passed this comment onto Unisons. Am sure they will be pleased.
Hi! I have never used pan pastels so I have no experience with them, ergo, no opinion. I start with the Prismacolor Nupastel, a hard pastel, to create or lay down my design. Then I use Rembrandt soft pastels for the "body" of the piece. Finally, I use Sennelier very soft pastels (buttery soft!) to paint the highlights and very darks. I blend my pastels to the finish. I use Wallis Sanded Pastel Paper, Canson Mi-Teintes Pastel Paper and I've used Arches Watercolor paper. I've never tried Unison but have always wanted to try them! For me they are too expensive!😕
Hi Peter! Thank you for sharing this information. It is very helpful to me as I am new to pastels. But I wonder, do you sometimes fixate between the layers or to the finished painting?
If I am using the method with water and pastels there is no need as the water already fixed the first coats when used. I never fix in between coats, no reason why not except I find fixative kills light and bright tones. This also depends upon the paper I am using. Some papers take the first coats so well it is not needed but final coats are harder to add etc. Using a method that is heavy and direct solves that, so the painting is finished almost immediately. Thinner first coats well rubbed in also helps. Remember my offer on pastel prices on my website? :-)
My pleasure. It is fun to paint pastels on but uses an awful lot plus remember NOT to blend with finger tips but with palm of hand or you will very quickly have sore finger tips! :-( I tend to use mainly watercolour paper and start with water and pastels now or pastel papers.
@@faith6651 Thank you, I have used Fisher 400 a few times; but my usual paper is Uart 400, 500,or 600 grit. I love it. I do use an under painting of either pan pastel, water or isopropal alcohol with the dry pastels or just a dry one rubbed into the paper with a stiff piece of foam. I don't use my fingers a lot to blend, so that is not an issue. Thanks again.
Yes I have looked, I have those in my set as you see, but I have to use cheaper ones to get those really bright flourescent colours they do not do. I did ask. I am happy that way though.
This is interesting!!! I can actually combine watercolor/water-based techniques with the soft pastels!!! I ordered a set of Unison and a set of Rembrandt (for details)... still waiting for them to arrive, but I can’t wait to try out and do some experiments with them~
Unison will "make up" special sets for an artist to promote, or sell, of their own favourites, as I have in this film? The ones you mention are merely a chosen set by such an artist.
Unison provide "special sets" commissioned by various artists as well as their own landscape and portrait sets etc. In this film you see my set but I am adding to this with magentas also. Plus have their new set of darks. I already have an adequate selection of greys in mine :-)
Hi I noticed you have the Turqoise set in your collection, please could you tell me if they're the same shades as the ocean blue set on their website? I'm looking to get the right colour's for shallow tropical shoreline and have yet to try pastel art
By all means email me and I will send you the sheet of colours I chose. I think some numbers have changed. I did this way before Unison made smaller sets, so all are my choice and I have used them in Barbados, Cuba etc. over acrylic ink grounds with great vibrance! peter@peterwoodarts.com
First things first.. my EARS! I had my volume way too high at the start of this vid and suffered as a coincidence! Secondly, excellent video and very informative. I'm just starting out again with pastels I had a lot of trouble with them in my college years with consistency and lack of knowledge. I didn't have the benefit of UA-cam when I was in college and I've learnt so much over the last few days with just watching videos on here. These pastels look wonderful and sound like they are worth the cost, I'll have to save a few quid up first to get a decent set and stick with the cheap faber castells I've just bought for now.
Thanks for this video. Not enough info around you tube about the pastels themselves. Can you tell me what the letter 'P' on the Unison labels means? It's only on random pastels it seems. Some are black and some are red. Thanks for your thoughts.
This reply is just in for you from Unisons themselves - Hi Peter, The P stands for Premium which relates to the pigment that is used in that particular recipe i.e. it’s the most expensive pigment hence the P & higher cost of pastel. Helen
I'm getting into soft pastel. I have pan pastel already, a 30 set of rembrandt for underpainting and I just ordered an 80 set sennelier but I was wondering if it's ok if I just buy a starter set of 16 of unison for the final touch? I've been expending too much money lol but I do want to try it out so bad.
By all means buy a starter set of Unison and enjoy and compare them I am sure will find them superb! My own personal feelings are that the Pan pastels are great for underpainting but more difficult to use as bright final coats. You can decide for yourself?
Depending where you are. In the U.K. an organisation called the S.A.A. Society of all artists, offers a reasonable quality budget pastel. A littler harder than Unisons, though. Also for very bright colours, the harder but very cheap Inscribe pastels are useful.
hello, I want to try unison pastels and i am trying to select good portrait base tones, like for pale to darker skin tones like 5 god tones. I cant get them in person so I have to get online. what shades would you recomend for portraits. Ithey have so many earth tones its hard to tell.
Hi Starr. Delighted to help if I can but in this case feel it better if you contact UNISONS directly as I suspect they will already have a set especially in place for you needs?

Peterwoodarts Thanks so much for such a quick response! That's a lot of videos, and I plan to watch them all ad time allows. I will follow the link and follow you also. I absolutely love your work! I do have a question or a request if you will. I have searched all over UA-cam and have tried to find tutorials or lessons that start off with very simple scenes or landscapes. I was thinking that if there are short, simple lessons that are easy to follow, then it might help new pastel artists such as myself build up some much needed confidence that I think will help me and others progress as artists. How would you feel about something like that? Thanks again for answering. Blessings, Stacy
OK Stacy, but once you have had said time to search through my films I think you may find several simple ones, but I will look at producing an extra one for you, yes :-) Have a great time - Peter
Peterwoodarts Thanks so much. I went through several last night and they are in fact very helpful. Both the watercolor and pastel ones alike. And I Love that you mix the two. Hi Peter - just found you on UA-cam and love your Art! I'm planning to buy some Unisons to paint along with you, would the Unison Landscape 72 set be a good starting point, or should I purchase the individual pastels you recommend? Thanks for any help, Karen
A personal choice that is entirely up to you Karen. I chose mine to suite my needs and they will do all subjects and venues from snow to beaches. :-) Even the Caribbean! Perhaps choose what YOU feel best with and attracted to? You can always add colours later?
Yes, you are totally right, it was a bit of a silly question wasn't it! :o) I do like your use of vibrant colours, so I will look at the charts and also some tips from your colour choices. Thanks very much and I'll take a look at your FB page too. Salut, Karen
Thank you for this very informative video. On it you mention using glass paper. Please could you tell me what type/grade of glass paper you use? Many thanks. :-)
Hi. P500 paper. BUT there are several actually marketed for this purpose, one by a well known pastel painter under his own name. It is important to make sure the paper is stable. I no longer use it as althouigh it was fun I find it expensive, can crack if bent and uses a LOT of pastel without really being much better than an ordinary paper or my prefered way of working with water and watercolour paper now. Hope this helps? Peter
I suppose mainly and naturally" Impressionist" but I do not like to be tied down to any one path, way, box and if I wish to create by writing, illustrating, carving, pottery, glass then I will. Or even mixed medium very often. By all means pop across to my website and see peterwoodarts.com for that history and diversity? Part of my art is this very sharing of my pleasures and projects so others may enjoy? Keep in touch, over 1000 vids to see here :-)
See my prices on my website peterwoodarts.com I have tried to make them cheaper than I can find elsewhere, for you? set of 18 £65.00 - 72 £230.00 plus p.p. Yes I know it is still costly but maybe start with my travel set?
@@faith6651 Your prices are definitely better. I'm just going through a cancer journey with my German Shepherd and it's just cost me three thousand dollars this afternoon. When my finances pick up, I will look at yours - mind you then there's postage to Australia, which is generally pretty hefty. I have a few Unison, and they're definitely the best - next to Townsends. One day I am determined to have a full set. Incidentally, I just saw your 'Spring Rhododendrons' and it's utterly beautiful.
I empathise with you, I love my Labrador, best gundog, pal, I have ever had, plus I am going through the cancer journey myself right now. Just been told a kidney has to come out! Got to make the most of every day and until now I feel I have :-) Yes you maybe right about costs of the pastels over there and post. I will look into it for you anyway. Keep in touch.
@@faith6651 Oh I'm so sorry to hear that. I've started my dog on fenbendazole, I read about Joe Tippens and how his cancer seemed to disappear, and then I read it can be used on dogs. So I thought what the heck, and bought some. I just know you will be ok, you are so gifted and such a blessing to your fans. All the best for the kidney surgery, and stay strong.
Unfortunately ALL decent art materials are relatively expensive. You get what you pay for? E.g. in watercolour artists quailty is more translucent, goes further and brighter. In pastels they are softer and pure colour, not loads of chalk or filler, the unisons are larger, almost twice the size of most others, belnd better with water etc. I also combine cheaper bright ones at times. If you need to save further then use methods and a paper that reduce the amount used? E.g. if you use glass paper it will use far more than water and pastel on hot pressed paper finished with a final pastel coat?
They are also less than half the size / volume and only hold together by the paper. Personally I prefer to remove the paper to enable use sideways. I am not saying they are no good or not very useful. They are. For me Unisons perform for all I require and are super quality. I have no wish or time to argue this point. I only advise by my experience. If you are so experienced as to continue debating this then there is no need. Continue with what you are happiest with? :-)
Hi, have to laugh! Thanks or your input. Not offended at all. I use all sorts of moods in my films but am a bit limited by copyright and laws. Just chose what I felt to be a light hearted intro as music, like art, is as individual in likes to all ? :-) Some would enjoy, others not. I play some traditional and Irish music etc. as in some of my own films, and have a music collection of literally hundreds of CD.s. so fairly broad in taste. Pity I cannot use all? Glad you enjoyed the content though, that's the main thing? Hope you enjoy the rest of the over 900! :-)
Excellent video...been using pastels for years, and once I discovered Unison, I never looked back..not cheap but I still feel you get what you pay for. Fantastic range and marvellous subtle colours.

What’s your style of art?
I suppose mainly and naturally" Impressionist" but I do not like to be tied down to any one path, way, box and if I wish to create by writing, illustrating, carving, pottery, glass then I will. Or even mixed medium very often. By all means pop across to my website and see peterwoodarts.com for that history and diversity? Part of my art is this very sharing of my pleasures and projects so others may enjoy? Keep in touch, over 1000 vids to see here :-)
Id love a couple of sets of Unison, but I'd have to mortgage my house.
Thanks. May mean being more careful on Xmas booze? lol
Made in Northumberland!,
Yes realised my typo ages ago. :-)

They are very expensive!!!!!!!!
Yes but Sennelier or Schmincke are less expensive and very good pastels too....
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, but your techno intro music is absolutely horrible. Pls don't use that again.
