    Thank you! I’ve put off buying because I wasn’t sure what to get. I don’t have unlimited funds but I want to create art to be proud of. This is will get me started. I hope you’ll also steer us beginners towards needed other materials such as papers, blenders, etc. then I think I’ll feel more comfortable knowing that I have the best materials. Won’t be in the dark. Thank you for sharing your expertise! I’m sure all your students have gone on to achieve great works! Thank you! Love your tutorials and your teaching methods.🌝👍❤️

    Thank you so much for this video! I so needed it and you're absolutely correct - being a newbie in pastels, it's extremely confusing to know the difference between everything and buy the right for a specific artstyle. So this is very important, very clearly explained and made very well.
    Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Wow! the paper is so cheap in the UK. I just paid $150 australian for 12 sheets of the large paper but at the end of the day it is worth every penny. The things I can do on it i've never been able to do on other papers. Ive used inktense on it as well and that is coming up nice to. thank you Jason. Your tutorials are fantastic

    I've always been using the sticks as I don't care as much about realism, but knowing there are pastel sticks now will be nice. I've always wanted to go in and fine detail stuff when I was done, but it was hard with the clunky sticks.

    Hi Jason,
    For my Christmas wish list, I am considering asking for pastel sticks (carré) and can't figure out whether to ask for the large Conté set (of 80, including some pencils) or the Polychromos set of 60. I often see you using Conté sticks in your drawings, yet in this video you seem to recommend the Polychromos. Wonder why that would be the preferred option? At first glance the Conté colours do seem to be more vibrant.
    Koh-i-Noor also has (hard) pastel sticks and I wonder how they compare and whether they would be an equally good option. Price wise they really are interesting!
    I don't really need the square/carré sticks for backgrounds and such as I can use soft or pan pastels for that.
    Though I'm pretty new to art and pastels, I have collected a nice supply to start with, as I really have many drawings on my wish list... have the pure colour set of 20 Pan Pastels, a small set of Stabilo (36), Pitt (24) pencils + a set of Gioconda pencils (48). Also have various soft pastels, i.e. Faber Castell studio quality half chalks (72), Talens Rembrandt half chalks (60), Koh i Noor Toison d' Or (72) and a handful of Schmincke.
    Look forward to your recommendation, so that I can proceed to submit my X-mas wish list. Thanks in advance Jason! :)

    I am taking my first class in soft pastel, just like to try and see if i like it and seems i should go and buy at least a 120 set of soft pastel either sticks or the thicker ones.....since we need more colors in order to produce a nature painting. This is also because we cannot mix colors to produce much of other colors. Another big problem is that soft pastels of any kind....pencil, or sticks or the fat chalks, or pan pastels, and even the paper....they are so expensive.......so pity that art is so expensive..... :/

    Hi Jason been doing pastels for a little while . Your right that their like oils.. dark to light ,which I like also . So my question is how do you frame your pastels under glass ?best inexpensive way? The cost is a lots & lots expensive museum glass is the best .
    Been trying to see if using fixatives then a sealer ? And just frame with no glass any suggestions would be great ! Thanks for your great videos

    • @attheranch873
      @attheranch873 5 років тому +1

      Renee Carter I’ve had great success with using a few light coats of Spectrafix fixative in a flairasol bottle as an isolation layer, then brushing a few coats of Golden’s Gloss Polymer Varnish w/ UVLS on top. It makes for an amazing hard satin finish and doesn’t have to be under glass! This will work with colored pencils and pastel pencils. I also use it between layers so I don’t have any loose pastel on the surface. I don’t know if it would work with thicker pastels. I learned about the fixative from Jason Morgan and the varnish from Ester Roi. The fixative MUST be transferred from the bottle it comes in to a flairasol bottle for it to work well. It doesn’t even darken the pastels!

      Frame behind the best glass in your budget, using a double mat (mountboard) no fixative.

    (I remember you used to use them, but I think in one video I heard you say you discovered some problem with using them for underpainting, but I forgot what you said the problem was.)

    • @wildlifeartjm
      @wildlifeartjm  4 роки тому

      I don't use them for areas like skies etc as they are too grainy. They are still fine for underlayers like fur and Eve better for details on top.

      encouraginghope Gloves, a mask if you are concerned about respritory issues, and if you can afford to, an air purifier will filter out the dust. This is just a generalisation though.

    • @attheranch873
      @attheranch873 5 років тому +3

      Pan pastels have less dust because they go on in sheer layers. Pastel pencils don’t have a lot either, so they might be a good combo for you.

    Perhaps instead of putting other artists down and recommending others not to follow them, it would be kinder to just say what you recommend and why, without the negativity? To each their own in the way they approach their own videos, and i get your reasoning, but it just came across as a little off putting with the whole "paint by numbers" comment. Just something to think about. Nice video otherwise.
