Lindsay, you are fantastic, your generosity shines through. I find many artist tubers can be controlling and have their own self agenda. You are one special woman. You, with all your videos, have helped me with so much in my journey. I really appreciate you and the way you shine.
Lindsey, thank you! I love that you reviewed these products and gave suggestions for pastels before starting the series. Even if you have already reviewed products, I think this is very helpful to have you show us different products and your preferences before you record an instruction.Love you and your videos.
Dear Lindsay, I can't RAVE enough about you and your teaching re watercolor and pastels. I just got mine from Amazon, Pentel 50 oil colors (only about $7). Before I'll try for the first time, I knew to check out YOUR info on youtube first. I LOVE how you explain that by doing something in life, learning new things is what matters. You always make me feel confident and I know even if it turns out horribly, I still DID something worthwhile. (I'm 71, been painting with watercolors since March 2021). You have been such a great influence, I'm on your FB group and LOVE all your administrators and your members are the BEST, KINDEST, CARING people in the world. Thank you for being you (also how you care about our pets regarding our supplies being dangerous possibly..I have 2 cats, big dog, 2 huge turtles). Can't wait to test out my new medium tomorrow!! Venice, Cal.
You & your family are in our thoughts and prayers. I'm so glad you are starting this series. I was gifted oil pastels for Christmas and I have no idea how to use them!
Thanks for your informative video. I have never heard anyone be able to talk as fast, and for as long, without making many mistakes, as you. You are amazing. Well done.
You just read my mind! You always do. I took out my old set of oil pastels a week ago to give them some love but I found I lost my touch that I had with them. I just wasn't as good as I used to be. This would be really helpful!!
Hi Lindsay, I love watching your videos and I've been a fan of yours for sometime now and I am absolutely thrilled that you are doing a pastel series for the month of April. Thank you for sharing
I'm soooo excited! I got some oil pastels years ago and have never used them because I didnt know how lol...cant wait till april! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge with us! And yall are in my prayers!
There was a fabulous pastel artist in France that was down the mountain from us. Her name was Mary and she held artist retreats, they were so fabulous. I think pastels are amazing art material and super creative and fun!! This series is a great idea and I will be sending people your way!!!!
Really looking forward to this series -- thank you so much for launching into pastels in a big way! I've had soft pastels, and pastel pencils, lurking, neglected, in the depths of my art and craft stash for years; it will be such fun to learn how to use them properly, at last.
Hi Lindsay. I love love love your channel. Every time i want to know or find out anything your there. Your like a Wikipedia of crafts. Thank you for this one i wanted to know the difference between Pan Pastels vs Soft Pastels and you are the one to turn too. Thank you for your frank opinion on materials. Hugs and Luvs xxx Wendy
I have always wanted to learn more about pastels. I have some fairly hard pastels but I don't seem to get along with them well. I love my Caran D'Ache Water Soluable Crayons and my Gelatos, and that's my experience with the pastels. So, thank you for this series, Lindsay.
As always so much information .. thank you.... I started watching your Poppies with Pastels and thought OMG beautiful then saw your Jellyfish one... amazing I hope to see you do more pastels.. thanks !
Interesting video Lindsay and although I will watch the series, I have no idea how to use soft pastels. Looking forward to finding out and watching you create! TFS
This series makes me so *excited*! I can't wait, I've collected several types of "chalk pastels" , and different types of paper like the toned ect. I've researched, but my pastel paintings look like a child's renderings. I'm very interested in reflections on water. I went to Bok Tower, they have Lilly pads that are 5' across and lovely koi. Painting that in pastel would be a dream come true! Thank you for sharing your talent! You are a rare bird...beautiful inside and out! 💥woot-woot💥
Hi Lindsay. Me again sorry I just got soooo excited i had to post this. Just tried the Soft Pastels to do something i saw done with Pan Pastels and it worked, thank you so much for giving me this video to watch and thereby giving me the confidence to try something new. Big HUGS and Luvs xxx Wendy
So excited, I have pastels and don't know what to do with them and I also bought the portfolio water soluble ones and not used them. Thanks for doing this Lindsay and helping us use our supplies! Hugs
I haven't even watched the vid as I'm writing this--the ad is playing, but the title and description has made me so happy because I want to improve my pastel skills quickly! I have 2 sets of medium hardness pastels (Charvin and Mungyo both from Jerry's) and just got Stabilo pastel pencils and am excited to see the advantage of having super soft ones like Schmincke or super hard like NuPastel or Cretacolor Carré. I'm bouncing in my seat with excitement!
I was so sorry to hear that hazel is gone. my heart and prayers are with you and your family. Having been through it myself I know how hard it can be and yes. they are family. we had buster for eighteen years and went through it too. just know you did your best for her and she knew you all loved her. God bless my friend and prayers to you all!!!
Lol I was just cringing at the thought of handling chalk! I'm one of "those" people I can't stand the feel of chalk, I swear the little hairs on my neck just stood up and I shivered LOL. Pan pastels here I come!!
+CraftyLori I totally understand you; I have a couple of friends that feel that way. However if you were to try soft pastels (as opposed to hard pastels, although both are chalk pastels) you would get much less of the chalk feel. They are almost buttery when you use them; the color is more intense and the crumble not break like chalk hard pastels so maybe they could work or you. Although if you can't even get through them then absolutely pan pastels are the ones for you. Have fun!
I first worked with pastels in college. The one piece still in existence is on colored construction paper, matted and framed and is in a gallery in Seattle in the curator's collection. Since I am a sight impaired artist many who see that piece ask if I will do others. It's been 10yrs since creating that piece... Guess I should create 1 or 2 more. Lol...
Thanks Lindsay for this pastel tutorial! I accidentally ordered a set of chalk pastels (soft) from Jerry's thinking they were water soluble oil pastels, and I had no idea what to do with them. Now I can't wait for the other videos in this series! Very informative!!
I have the basic 12-pc Mungyo soft pastel set and I use it to shade my polymer clay pieces before baking. It's non-toxic and I'm quite happy with the pigments. I use a make-up brush and a q-tip to apply it. I tried picking up a stick to do a simple painting but realized that I don't like the feel of chalk sticking in my hands. Haha. And so I'd just use them for backgrounds in my coloring book and treat it like a pan pastel, by just rubbing a q-tip or the cheap foam applicators (I found a pack of ten) over it ^^"
Excellent, informative, video. Thanks. I hate the feel and gloves make my hands sweat so I use my soft pastel stick with the pan tools. I have them set in foam so they don't move around swiping them... works for me.
Thank you so much, Ms. Lindsey!!! This was perfect. I have never worked with any pastels so I needed this, because I want to make some sort of purchase. Thinking of you and sending you good vibes..... ((((Lindsey)))
Why am I subscribed to this channel!!! It only feeds my art supply want addiction haha. Just when I thought watercolor paints where my passion now I really want some pastels.... Sigh, off to the art store I go . 😝
Same as me! I love watercolor, and suddenly found pastels. It's ok, feel good, you can easily justify your spending, cos you can use them both together😂. They work well, and the pastels can cover up watercolor mistakes too, which is really nice😊
I wanted to try pastels and a few weeks ago I found Charvin set of 24 on sale at Jerry's for 4.99. I love your videos and weblog! I can't stop watching! LOL
I purchased oil pastels first and then the chalk pastels and I also have the water soluble versions too. Went a tad crazy! I Can't figure out how to use them and get an actual picture out of them! Lol so very happy and excited that you are doing this series! Thank you!
I can't really stand pastels, but those pan pastels are gorgeous!! I have pastels but can't stand the feeling of them, getting braver though. (and as I was commenting you addressed the feeling of pastels). Thank you!!!!
Yes! I am very interested in your new series!! I have and have used PanPastels and some pastel pencils, and I have some beginner brands of chalk and oil pastels, but I was given sets of Sennelier soft and oil pastels and I really would like to know more of what I'm doing before I use them :)
Thanks Lindsay! I have the Prismacolor pastels and thought I probably wasted my money. Already feeling better about that even though the pan pastels look luscious.
yay! I'm so inspired to get my conte crayons and soft pastels out! also i bought those Pan Pastels forever ago... i have only used the white so far. I'm excited for you to show these in your series because I'm still a little vague on how to use them!! especially the whole use of water...
Yay!! So happy about the pastel series!!! :))) I have the set of 20 Landscape pan pastels... I can't wait to see what projects you come up with!! I got my pan pastels at Dick Blick for $68.
+Nannys y Tete Hernández Are you able to order off of Amazon or Dickblick.com or Jerrysartarama? They al have them. I just saw a set on Amazon for $68. Here's a link www.amazon.com/Armadillo-Art-Craft-Panpastel-Portrait/dp/B000VTJWNG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1458693646&sr=8-2&keywords=pan+pastel
Yay! Looking forward to doing more with my Portfolios. I also have the Pebbles chalks - regular and frosted. Is there anything I can do to get more use from them? I mostly use them to color over dry embossed papers.
This will be good for me. I have a small set of colored Rembrant's I got when I worked at Michael's. I also have a large set of skintones. I guess I thought that was a good idea and I am sure I used 40% off to get them. I have a few pan pastels and a huge set of cheap pastels. I have probably had them for about 8 years and not touched them.
I use GooGone to liquefy my oil pastels after laying them down. I bought my soft pastels at Hobby Lobby...they are their Masters Touch brand and love them. Rich pigment and a great box to protect them plus I could use the 40% coupon.
Just an fyi on oil pastels. You can use a product called Grumtine, made by Grumbacher, to thin out the pastels on your ground and be like an oil paint. It is made from orange peel oil, smells nice and works well. It isn't the same as turpentine or similar products. I have been using it for many years with my oil pastels, and it works well.
I am so grateful for this series. I have oil pastels..but never really knew what to do with them. I draw with them, but it seems just wrong....as if I am leaving something out. I end up with just outlines sort of. Anyway, I really need whatever information you will give. Thank you so much. (I have surmised from a few comments here that you have lost a pet....that breaks my heart, because I immediately think of my dog that I lost a few years ago...I still cry over him....so I know your pain)
Fun and informative? yes and yes! I have three brands of chalk pencils and my favorites are put out by Hobby Lobby. The are woodless, packed beautifully in firm rubber and very nice to use--They are packaged under masters touch brand. They are more expensive than general's but not bad. The colors are spectacular. Looking forward to this series since I also have some pan pastels, H20 pastels, oil pastels and don't really have a handle on them. Also, I was so sorry to hear about you losing Hazel. I have two little mutts that came to me by accident (I'm a real sucker) and love them dearly so I understand.
I've been trying to get my hands on the portfolios for a year. Noone ships to the Czech Republic and if they do it costs 3 times as much as the pastels. I'm really excited about the pastel series because I don't know how to use them, I have a set of the chalk ones and don't really use it.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weiricc Thank you Lindsay. I should have been more explicit - can you use embossing powder and heat set it over pastels? Thanks again!
I just found your channel and I subbed right away! All of the videos I've watched so far have been really helpful and I love your teacher attitude. Makes learning more about art that much fun 😊
I always keep wanting to get in to pastels but I'm a bit phobic of the feel of them so the pan pastels look so appealing to me and maybe pastel pencil for detail, very informative I didn't know they existed thank you n_n
Wow, this 2016 video of yours just cycled into my feed so I thought I’d watch & comment....and the info is still good anyway 😺 The Artists Loft (avail Michaels) brand of soft stick pastels are cheap and offer 2 of each of 12 colors. Not pro grade, but if you want to get the feel of what soft pastels can do, it’s a good option in order to see if you may want to make an investment in more expensive ones...or not. I have a good set of Pan Pastels and want to do something really nice one of these days, but have recently been having too much fun with watercolors. Oh well! Thanks! P.S. Dick Blick has an extra excellent very basic how-to using Pan Pastels (from 2009.)
Darn it. I came here trying to decide if i wanted to buy oil or soft pastels...and now I want pan pastels which I didn't even know where a thing and they're definitely not in my budget but I'm going to obsess over them until I have them! Otherwise, this was very informative and thank you so much for making this video. It really was helpful.
I found a bunch of Strathmore Windpower watercolor paper from when I was learning watercolor and I found out it has great tooth for the harder chalk and oil pastels. I find the tooth too "deep" for softer or creamier pastels. Oh, and I found there's a product on Jerry's (I don't know if it's on the other art supply websites) for storing each of the major brand of pastels. They're called Pastel Pods. I haven't tried them yet, but they look promising for those like me who like to gather many different brands.
Lindsay, for the products you have do you have a website that we can go to to look at each one or if you could attach it to this video it would be a great help? Thank you I really enjoy your videos.
Great video. Listened all the way through but you didn't talk about sealing the work and with anything powdery or chalky that needs to be done. If the uses of spray seals needs to be done I have to do it outside with a chemical mask so I would love to know if there is a nontoxic alternative to sealing your work. As a mixed media artist I would like information on combining mediums. I mostly work with acrylic paints and have combine oil pastels with them but I would like to fine out more about mixing in chalk ...if that can be done. Perhaps each layer needs to be sealed?
I’m trying to use oil pastels as I have never really got on with them. I love chalk (soft pastels) used to use all the time and have gone back to them. Love putting my fingers over the drawing to blend.
I can't wait to learn how to use the "chalks" I got out of my late SIL's art supplies when I was helping my brother clean out her stuff. Hopefully they are usable like these you show...can't remember what brand they are, but they are square pieces like some of your's are. :-))
Hi Lindsey been looking for someone to explain some on the items you shared, I have purchased through the years on sale and now am ready to try them. I do have pastel paper but I wondered especially with the oil pastels, could you also do on a canvas? Thanks
WOW...... YEAH !!!!!!!!!! So excited... Can't wait Lindsay.
Lindsay, you are fantastic, your generosity shines through. I find many artist tubers can be controlling and have their own self agenda. You are one special woman. You, with all your videos, have helped me with so much in my journey. I really appreciate you and the way you shine.
thank you!
I love the pan pastel look. I don't have any but on a wish list. I love the blendability and the fact that they don't contaminate each other.
Wow, you provide us with a wealth of information.
Yay! Pastel series. Can't wait to see the oil pastel stuff. You rock Lindsay!
Can't wait to see this series.

Wow, the pan pastels are so creamy and beautiful. I think I would love to have some of those.

Really looking forward to this series -- thank you so much for launching into pastels in a big way! I've had soft pastels, and pastel pencils, lurking, neglected, in the depths of my art and craft stash for years; it will be such fun to learn how to use them properly, at last.

Very interesting Lindsay, i have the Pentel oil pastels and watercolour crayons, and have often wondered how to use them for the best. TFS.

Hi Lindsay! Thank you for this great video. Can you emboss over pastels?
+Pat A you can use pastels over dry embossing
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weiricc Thank you Lindsay. I should have been more explicit - can you use embossing powder and heat set it over pastels? Thanks again!
+Pat A I'm not sure, you would need something to stick it down withm might be tough over the pastels
I just found your channel and I subbed right away! All of the videos I've watched so far have been really helpful and I love your teacher attitude. Makes learning more about art that much fun 😊
aww, thank you:)
Sorry to hear about your doggy Lindsey Best Wishes
Can you do more oil and acrylic painting tutorials ?
Lindsay, for the products you have do you have a website that we can go to to look at each one or if you could attach it to this video it would be a great help? Thank you I really enjoy your videos.
Jerry's Artarama has the best selection and prices but you can double check blick and Amazon too to be safe:)
Thanks! This helped out a lot. :)
Thank you 👍🎨
Great video.
Spectra fix is a fixative for pastel and pan pastels that is non-toxic and it's a pump spray, not an aerosol.
+LindieLee I rarely spray mine, I hate what it does to the colors
I’m trying to use oil pastels as I have never really got on with them. I love chalk (soft pastels) used to use all the time and have gone back to them. Love putting my fingers over the drawing to blend.
I can't wait to learn how to use the "chalks" I got out of my late SIL's art supplies when I was helping my brother clean out her stuff. Hopefully they are usable like these you show...can't remember what brand they are, but they are square pieces like some of your's are. :-))
+dapperdoxie they should be fine
Hi Lindsey been looking for someone to explain some on the items you shared, I have purchased through the years on sale and now am ready to try them. I do have pastel paper but I wondered especially with the oil pastels, could you also do on a canvas? Thanks
you want something rigid with good tooth, canvas will flex and the primer will make the pastel not adhere well.
