@@vixxie9390 Not a lot of people know the Nile Song. Heaviest Pink Floyd song out there. They are my ultimate favorite band as well. Their progression and growth from album to album is mesmerizing and outstanding. Their experiments with sound is unmatched. "More" is my favorite album by them, though it's definitely hard to pick.
David Gilmour's wife Polly Samson Gilmore said that when they have a discussion or an argument she uses words (she's a published author) and he uses his guitar! She was making the point that you guys are that he actually sings with his guitar he just makes it sing. I've seen it said somewhere that guitars want David Gilmour for Christmas!
Guitars won't David Gilmore for Christmas... I don't know what to say for that. This is one of the greatest compliments (from so many) I ever see. David Gilmore have different tone and he's traveling my soul everywhere so many times in my life.
Agreed, I have often said Gilmour can tell as story and provoke emotion with only his guitar. He is the master of his craft, very very few can match that ability.
A song about Syd Barrett the great inspiration for the band who sadly fell into mental illness and was forced to leave. (S)hine on (Y)ou crazy (D)iamond is a tribute to SYD Barrett by the band.
Yes you are the first I seen here that knows and stated the fact about syd Barrett and his mental problem and how Pink Floyd wrote and performed this great song in his honor and in my opionion the greatest band of all time
Just a side note, and a sad one really. The 4 Backing Singers were Durga McBroom, Sam Brown and her mother Vicki Brown, and Clare Torry. Torry was the studio vocalist on 'Great Gig in the Sky'. McBroom was on several of the major tours Pink Floyd did, as was Sam Brown. Vicki Brown was a session singer I believe for many years, but she actually had Breast Cancer during this particular concert and died about a year later. Pink Floyd are my GOAT. Great reaction guys, and your comments are spot on.
Pink Floyd, wish I could have seen them perform live. I grew up in the 70's. This was written about and dedicated to Syd Barrett. Syd unfortunately left the band and the rest is history. I really miss Richard Wright...his talent, skill, and natural ability to become one with his keyboards is unsurpassed.
I was privileged to first see them in 1973 and quite a few times after culminating in the Pulse concert in London in 1994. Sadly by 1973, Syd had already left the band. As someone reaching the end of the road I am heartened that later generations have enjoyed and kept the band alive.
I saw Floyd at Anaheim Stadium in 1977 for their Animals tour. They floated giant pigs and sheep above the stadium before they exploded in the night sky.
@@ellbanks425 I wish! I live near PGH, but was a bit too young to see them then. I missed them and Zep, as far as concerts go. Lol, can't afford to go now--I think it was David Gilmour who came to PGH and he wanted over 200 bucks for a nosebleed ticket.
I did in 1973 " Dark Side of the Moon " tour. I was mind blown. Was the best concert I've ever been to & I've seen just about all the greats in the 70's when tickets were like $18. LOL✌🌻
My dad used to hate all the pop and rock music I used to play, but the first time I played this, he had to come closer to listen. He couldn't stop laughing at me lying on the floor with the speakers on either side of my head, so he wouldn't have to hear it. He actually turned it up!
Good response! I consider this a musical masterpiece! I would only recommend a studio version with an original video clip for the first listening to this song. It's a little longer than what Pink Floyd presented at concerts. David Gilmour cuddles with his guitar. It is a pleasure for ears and soul ...
Good music always gives me good energy and none better than Pink Floyd! Saw Pulse concert twice, this was first song. Great way to start, tribute to Syd Barrett.
This is a tribute to Syd Barrett, an original member of Pink Floyd - notice the title, Shine On You Crazy Diamond. He was their lead guitarist and wrote most of their early hits, but he gradually went nuts and was kicked out of the band in 1968, three years after the group started. Drugs played a big role in his mental illness.😀 Greetings from Norway.
What makes it such a special song the song was a tribute to Syd Barrett one of the original members of Pink Floyd. It gives the song a different meeting when you know that it was a tribute to a great musician
Try SORROW from their 1994 Pulse concert. By far, my favorite live performance. David Gilmour's guitar makes my soul happy. If Brit Floyd comes to your town, go see them. You will not regret it. Is saw Pink Floyd in 87 and 88, and I was still blown away by this tribute band.
The best intro ever. Seen this live. Shine on you crazy diamond is about the genius behind Pink Floyd Peter Green who they lost, mentally, to drugs. They never forgot who started Pink Floyd, that was Peter Green. Love you two. London 💛😜💛😜
Mel, I have to say I love your hairstyle in this video, it really suits you :). This is my favourite live video of Pink Floyd, I loved your reaction to it, great performance hey? Keep up the great work guys, cheers. Their are documentaries on UA-cam of how they started and achieved their original sound and became the legends they are.
Is this the Venice gig? Back in 88 a friend of mine taped this in vhs live on tv and we saw it togheter the next day, and many days and months after. This was what pulled me into Pink Floyd, more than 30 years ago.
This song was released in 1975... it still sounds strong today!🔥⚡ Roger Waters (bass) wrote the lyrics about his friend Syd Barrett, who formed & named Pink Floyd in 1965... he was out of the band by 1968 because of his mental health deterioration ("crazy diamond") Roger Waters had left Pink Floyd in '84... so he was not in this performance. David Gilmour (guitar) still did a stellar job guiding Pink Floyd forward w/ classic members Nick Mason (drums) & Rick Wright (keyboards)
I don't know if you're familiar with the story behind this song. The group's founding member, original guitarist/singer/songwriter Syd Barrett's nickname was Crazy Diamond. During the production of their second album, Syd went on an acid trip that he basically never came back from. His amazing songwriting ability just completely left him and his behavior became so erratic that the rest of the group had no choice but to remove him from the band. He became a virtual recluse, and one of rock's most famous drug casualties. They wrote this song about him for their brilliant 1975 album Wish You Were Here (my favorite Pink Floyd album). On the day they were recording this song, Syd actually showed up at the studio! The other band members hadn't seen him for years, and he looked so different, they almost didn't recognize him at first. He hung out with them for a while and listened to the work they were doing. Then, as suddenly as he appeared, he was gone. Supposedly nobody in the band ever saw him again. He died a few years ago, alone and just a shell of the brilliant musician he had once been. Listen to the lyrics in the song and you can hear and feel the heartbreak all the members felt singing this song about their former friend and leader. This song became their standard concert opener, and remained so up until the group ended. I got the chance to see Floyd live twice, and it was an incredible multi-media experience.
Well done on this review: I particularly liked how you described the opening sequence as soothing. I knew the subject matter of the song before I heard it the whole way through, so I always instinctively interpreted it as ominously tragic. But you're right to point out that there is a soothing quality about the opening of the song as well that was lost on me until you mentioned it; keep up the good work!
Ppl typically don't take into account how difficult it is/was to create Pink Floyd music in the studio where you can do multiple takes and edit accordingly, but then they do it live and it's better than the studio version. True artists.
I never got to see them live but I did get to see Roger Waters live doing the Wall. I’d love to see David Gilmour live because for me he’s the heart of Floyd. You really need to do the entire Wish You Were Here because the songs literally bleed into each other and tell a story. It’s a tribute to Syd Barrett the original lead singer of Pink Floyd. It’s a long album but it’s well worth the time.
When you talk about making love to his guitar, check out Comfortably Numb from the 1994 Pulse concert. It is rumored that when it was over his guitar asked for a cigarette.
One of the greatest bands of alltime bar none!!!!!!
yea I agree. My favorite band of all time. They can do it all. Nile song is one of my go to examples of their range of styles.

I would say Marillion's Steve Rothery is an excellent apprentice/successor.
Agreed, I have often said Gilmour can tell as story and provoke emotion with only his guitar. He is the master of his craft, very very few can match that ability.
Agree 100
He’s the best the goat of tone and touch. Shredders don’t matter in outer space !!
💯 agree. I play guitar and he’s the goat his tone and touch can’t be taught
I listen to slow Pink Floyd when I feel anxious, it always helps!
Better than Xanax. Saw them live in 1973 "Dark Side of the Moon" tour. Never been the same since in a good way. Mind blowing.✌🌻🌻

Welcome yo the wirkd of Pink Floyd.
I am.63 and have been listening to them for 50 years.
This is a masterpiece.
I had the great privilege of seeing Pink Floyd in concert in Birmingham, AL in the mid nineties. I was on the 19th row and it was incredible 🔥🔥
I saw Pink Floyd on their Animals tour in Jefferson Stadium, Pasadena Texas. I guess it had to be 1976?
It’s wonderful to watch others discover this music. Thankyou guys.
Never heard this song before, but after hearing this song, I want more from Pink Floyd in my music library!
Perfect God like song, perfect reaction...Moved to tears

Wasn't it originally done on tenor sax? That's how I hear it in my head.
