I noticed that in the first four, the British riffs made me head bop and foot tap. The American ones were pure headbanging. This was my physical reaction to those 4 riffs. They are equally good. Iron Maiden is my favorite band.
British metal tends to be more upbeat, American darker and grittier. I'm no musician, so I cannot pinpoint the musical explanation -- in terms of notes and scales they favor -- but at least from these examples (which admittedly have been cherry picked) there is a clear difference in vibe.
As you can see Iron Maiden is my favourite band too hahaha
At first I thought that's a stupid way to differentiate between these styles, then I realised that I stopped tapping my foot when Enter Sandman started. Instantly reversed my opinion. That's a brilliant observation.

The most noticable thing for me is that british heavy metal tends to be more technical, while american heavy metal is more catchy. British heavy metal bands usually want you to hear a complex guitar riff simply to show off their prowess, while American ones just want you to nod your head and jump around. That being said, there are obviously exceptions. Dream Theater for instance, has an amazing guitarist that truly puts his skill to work in many of their songs.
As a composer I'd say it isn't really a difference in the level of technique, but where it's being channeled. British leads are incredibly technical, where american rhythms are incredibly technical. I can absolutely play some of my favorite Maiden lines since I mostly play lead, but I struggle whenever I pick up a Megadeth chart since the chords and progressions require such intense and brutal hand positioning. If you want an example of what I mean there, go check out the charts for Holy Wars or Tornado of Souls, those songs are just tremendously brutal
@@stephenwilliford-compositi6395 With Megadeth that's understandable. Dave Mustaine practically invented thrash metal. I remember watching a video some time last year where he played live with Metallica, and got to choose the song and the pace of the song. No one in Metallica could keep up with him and they ended up struggling through the entire tune while Mustaine just took it all in his stride. He's an incredibly talented guitar player for sure.

@@riderp3803 well yes, he was part of Metallica for some time but if I remember correctly he was not there when they released Metallica (black album)
Naw.
This is showing that there's clearly amazing talent for guitar playing and song writing in BOTH the US and UK.
...y el ganador es....
El rock Metal y nosotros. Los q disfrutamos estas tremendas bandas. Saludos de Chile. Entretenido el vídeo.
Mathew my friend for including Ace of Spades - respect💪
:) also in Iron maiden vs All riff battle ;)
Well, "Crazy Train" is both British (Ozzy) and American (Randy Rhodes)
I didn't think of that
Given that its a battle of riffs, I'd classify the Ozzy songs as American
But Randy actually wrote it. All Ozzy did was sing
@@JimTomatore shut up he’s British
@@dranarchy5552 So, it belongs to the Americans then
British: E
American: everything lower than E
Black sabbath did the drop D since the beginning.
Metallica uses E
Megadeth uses standard tuning too
Exodus, testament, Overkill, Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, even some pantera and Slayer....
Need more usa with e standard?
I don’t think Metallica dropped until Load. I think.
this is heavy metal vs thrash metal though.
Exactly
Thats what i had in mind
no, not really 😀
Megadeth heavy metal 🤦♀️🤦🏻♂️
Not really at all there was one maybe 2 thrash songs in the entire set
Lot of classic heavy metal, little bit of doom metal
Excellent and most enjoyable! Well played. Yes well played.
thaaaaaank uuu !!!!!
British: heavy metal
American: Every other metal genre
And power metal too
WOW
@Mailroom Clerk dude what are u talking about? Heavy metal is one and its British no doubt
Except black metal lol
No
I literally sang along to all these songs
I love your videos!
thank u Gustav 489 appreciate it \m/
I'm 50 and forever a Metalhead! FOREVER!!! Even if I live to be 80.
I'm 56 and will always thrash!!!!
@@kevinblackburn3198 😆🤟👍👴👩🦳

u kinda bad for 50
Sure I can say you're heavenly pretty 😍
Great channel, amazing playing, keep going brother ❤
It just feels like the Britain's metal is like a dad who has experience and practice behind it's shoulders and US metal is a enthusiastic child who is just winging it and sometimes hits just right but sometimes goes way off, so both are good in their own ways both have their own flaws but they are both great none the less.
And by the way great playing and real nice but of editing too, enjoyed the video a lot thanks!
Technically true with that analogy as the young ones of 83 had listened to Black Sabbath and all that also and then later on so on and so forth. This is like how it was with Classical music from like Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi to like Tchaikovsky and then later Igor Stravinsky it's all pretty good going as someone who's probably a bit too broadened horizons.
@Gen X lol
@Gen X I take it that you've never heard of Venom?
This is mostly how I feel about the difference too. British heavy metal tends to be complex and technically impressive, though that doesn't always result in a catchy tune you'd be whistling as you walk down the road. American heavy metal is much simpler, but also more catchy and sticks in your head. British heavy metal is made from the love of playing guitar, American heavy metal is made to become a popular band that makes a lot of money.
You'd be surprised how many talented guitar players waste their skills on simple catchy headbangers simply because technical riffs don't sell records.
@Gen X I British però, per anni,lo hanno interpretato tecnicamente meglio.
Personalmente, non saprei dare una preferenza; per me è Heavy Metal uno e l'altro.
Non faccio divisioni geografiche.
The Crazy Train Riff was written and first played by Randy Rhoads, who was American.
But: I love Slipknot, Metallica, Pantera but the Winner here is GB.
But there wouldnt be a Metallica if it wasnt for a certain drummer in the band, whom is Danish.
@@Roylevis There wouldn't be a Metallica, if not for a much better British band called Diamond Head
There wouldnt be music or rock if it wssnt for evolution... 😉
@@Roylevis There wasn't any evolution. Metallica just straight up copied Diamond Head. More of a blatant rip off then an evolution.
Lol well i ment The evolution of mankind...
The winner is my mom because she bought me donut.
What kind
@@metalben005 Man she bought him a donut, shouldnt that be enough?
Won't that make you the winner then!?
Well what kind??!!
Hands down
This was really cool, non stop clever dirty smile on my face the whole time. Well done. Subbed.
Thank u very much 🤘 if u like riffsbattle u r in the right place 🙃 done quite a few so far,,, n many more to come 👌😎
American “Heavy” Metal
British Heavy “Metal”
This is what I felt after watching this video.
he just picked bad songs, like there are tons of more heavy Metallica and Megadeth songs. Same for Maiden and Judas Priest.
@@ЉубомирКосовић these are all metal classics from American and British bands not bad ones
@@josh.c9733 i didn't said these are bad songs in general i said they're bad example of heavy metal.
@@ЉубомирКосовић we'll both of us have different opinions
I think they are heavy
@Pikey Haze there is a difference between metal and considering as metal. Like, wasn't gnr considered as heavy metal back then? Everyone can call a song heavy, so yeah, there's defenitely bad example of heavy.
And the winner is..... The viewing Audience... Ta Daaa....
Well played sir
england is the father of heavy metal
Nah. England is a lady. Everyone knows that. England is the mother of heavy metal

UK.. .any day of any week!!
Maiden... Priest... Leppard... so many great bands with iconic songs!
British rock all day over generic American sound. And I’m American. The Brits perfected all forms of rock. They have the ultimate all time bands who I don’t even have to name, it’s so obvious.
And what does Leppard have to do with heavy metal?
Serious comparison here: British Heavy Metal seems to be slower and more rhythmic where USA metal is just hard hitting and fast.
Where the British focus more on the flow of the notes, the USA just gives it all the power they've got.
(Kind of fitting for other things in this situation, too... Like the military.)
But in the end, neither one is better. They're different, but equal in greatness.
I agree with you but America's songs is thrash metal, soooo its diferrent
I thought it was the opposite, i thought british riffs sounded more clean and refined and speedy. American riffs sounded more chunky and distorted to me
tool
Coughs in guerilla warfare
Sorry, but the opposite is the right answer
Thank you for this minutes of amazing intros of heavy metal. Regards from Chile.
