From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, an epic adventure about a spirited teen who sets sail on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder and fulfill her ancestors' unfinished quest. During her journey, Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson), and together they cross the ocean on a fun-filled, action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and impossible odds. This movie also has the distinction of having the LARGEST character in any Disney movie. No, not the mountain TeFiti and not Tamatoa the -turtle- crab either! It's THE OCEAN. The ocean is depicted in the movie as a thinking character.

why we acting like being single is an amazing feat. Is that the standard for a strong heroine lol. In that case, add Mr Bean to the list. Y’all think it’s empowering but it’s embarrassing. There’s Moana’s bravery, her fearlessness but what y’all applaud is her martial status ㅠ

Okay you mentioned you’d like to know more about the culture featured in this movie which is a little tricky because it’s not just one culture. This movie is based around Polynesia which is a collective term for a buttload of different islands with slightly different languages and cultures today but initially each island was a settlement of those original voyagers they just evolved over time. The story in Moana is an attempt to explain the long gap between voyages. Originally Polynesian people would be sailing regularly to find new land but there’s a massive time gap in recorded voyages that has no explanation. What I like about the Te Ka/Te Fiti representation is that you’ll notice in several Polynesian cultures volcano deities would be credited with expanding on and creating incredibly fertile lands since volcanic soil is incredibly fertile, a parallel to Te Fiti who took on a more Mother Earth role. Maui interestingly enough is typically credited as a hero and also someone who was said to have pulled islands out of the sea (granted they bring that up and more within the movie itself which are all stories I’m familiar with since they’re still used as kids stories today. Excellent reaction btw, I love seeing people get so emotionally invested

After recently visiting the Bishop Museum, and reading a lot of very interesting information on the deities of Hawaiian culture, I think the choice of having Te Ka and Te Fiti be one and the same is all the better. Most of their deities have multiple names to represent different aspects of one figure.

So I'm from Hawaii. Maui is a demigod shapeshifter. Everything he says he's done in the song "You're Welcome" are a part of his myths. Each Polynesian Island has their own version of Maui but the myths are essentially the same. Also a lot of Polynesians are descendants of ancient voyagers. For example, "Hawaiians" are believe to be from a place in South Polynesia called Tahiki and they voyaged across the ocean and settled in Hawaii thousands of years ago.

This ending is why I think this movie has the most “feminist” energy of any Disney movie. Instead of using a more traditionally “male” way of defeating an enemy (like Maui is doing- using force), Moana uses compassion- a more traditionally feminine type of energy/approach. Its a female hero confronting a female villain, so that made this ending super powerful for me.

I love this movie. I think this film does a phenomenal job at empowering women without needing to belittle men. Even though Maui and Moana clashed in the beginning of their relationship, the character development between both of them is great. They both learned to respect each other as equals (especially Maui because he needed some humble pie) and they learned where their strengths are needed for the journey. The plot and the plot twist was beautifully thought out. I loved the fact that they used violence when it was needed but in the end showed that sympathy and compassion was what saved the world. 😭😭😭

    @samuelvincent557 2 роки тому +150

As always, I love your reactions. I love that you go beyond a surface review, and dig deeper into the story and message.
It is my, personal, head-canon that the Grandmother was chosen by the ocean to carry the heart, but she chose tradition and stayed with the island, and she regretted that decision later on. I think that is, one of the reasons, why she understands the ocean so much, and what it meant when the heart appeared to Moana. She tried to prepare her granddaughter for when she would have to make the same decision. That would be, another reason, why she became an, immediate, guiding spirit to help Moana, in the form of a Stingray.
And the fact that when Moana showed her Father the heart, he showed no surprise at all, in seeing it. He might have been given the chance too, and after his friend's death, he turned away as well. Which could be another reason he is so afraid Moana would be chosen too, and why he doesn't even want her near the shore.

One fact: the song/tune that was played when she was a little kid playing in the ocean and also the one she sang to Tefiti was originally a song written for the 18 female students and a female staff member that died in a Fire in a boarding school in Tuvalu in the year 2000. The fire was caused by one of the students who was studying at night with a candle and she accidently tipped it and the whole building was burnt down. The students tried to escape but they were locked in because of the curfew. My God Mother died in that fire. I was only 3 when this incident happened and I didn't know until my parents told me when I got older. This movie changed the lyrics but kept the melody. Its an overall emotional song. Many Tuvaluans still cry whenever they listen to this song as a reminiscent of the may lives of young women we lost. May they rip 🙏 😢

For us in the Pacific, yeah we were voyagers. Some or most didn't originally come from the Islands we inhabit now, our ancestors sailed across the Pacific and such, finding islands and leaving few of their people to reside there and build their villages etc etc.
That would be the reason why artifacts and patterned cloth from one island is usually found on others (for example, Fiji's Lapita Pottery found in Islands like Rotuma or Samoa if i remember correctly)
The movie actually kinda gets the idea of how the ancestors travelled well, navigation with stars and adapt to how the sea creatures/seasons changes
Mothers are normally strict LOL, but when it comes to decision makings and such we can always look and depend on them for help if the father or others see things differently

What always gets me the most is the scene where the Grandma returns and tells Moana who she is, telling her she understands her, and THEN telling her "I should never have put so much on you. If you want to go home, I am with you." Like, how often do we get that? Moana IS the chosen one of the ocean, but her grandma values her beyond that- more so, Moana is just a child still. She's not telling her to toughen up, to see it through, she's saying I am with you no matter what, and if you cannot do this, I am with you regardless, just always gets me.

Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as Brave, are princess movies that are not musicals and they have a lot of the same messages about girl empowerment as well as showing different cultures!

    • @kaylawoodbury2308
      @kaylawoodbury2308 2 роки тому +10

Rayas not about empowerment though, just because it has a strong female lead. It's about trust but they severely bungle that message. Everything is treated as Rayas fault, Rayas fault for trusting that girl from the other village that ended up causing the apocalypse, Rayas fault for not trusting strangers that attacked and stole from her, Rayas fault for not trusting the other girl to NOT kill the dragon despite threatening said dragon.... And then the girl is the one to end up saving everything and her and her village take literally not responsibility for any of their horrific actions. It's literally Gaslight and Scapegoat the movie.

There are dozens of Polynesian cultures in the Pacific; this movie was based mainly on three -- Sāmoa, Hawai'i, and the Māori culture of New Zealand. The original script was written by Taika Waititi, though by the time they got to the final film he joked that all that was left of his script was the scene description "EXT: OCEAN -- DAY".
The central story is derived from a much darker Māori myth. (Up front I want to say that I'm not Māori myself, I've learned about Māori culture mostly from books and classes, and if you want an insider's view of what the story elements mean in Māori culture you should really ask a Māori person.)
I had this movie spoiled for me, unfortunately, the first time I watched it. For some reason even though we were getting the regular movie soundtrack, it had subtitles from the directors' commentary. When Te Kā first shows up, in Gramma Tala's story at the beginning, they happen to mention that in the original script she was going to be Te Pō, at which point I knew what the twist was going to be. Because I know the story of Hine-nui-te-Pō.
Hine-nui-te-Pō is the Great Lady of the Night, the Māori goddess of death. But she was originally the life-giving goddess Hine-titama. Following events far too dark for a children's movie -- involving sexual assault -- she fled from the World of Light in shame and became the death goddess in the Underworld.
Māui came along later. He had already fished up the North Island of New Zealand, stolen fire from its guardian Mahuika (another underworld goddess), and humbled the Sun God Tama-nui-te-Rā to make him move slowly enough across the sky so there would be time for the day's work each day. (Tama-nui-te-Rā's name exactly parallels Hine-nui-te-Pō's name, but I don't know why.)
Anyway, Māui decided that his last and greatest gift to humanity would be to kill Hine-nui-te-Pō and make us all immortal. In the myths there is no happy ending. Māui failed for the first and last time in his life and was killed himself.
The single biggest difference between Te Pō in the myth and Te Kā in the movie is that Te Kā is a lava monster, a fiery being, whereas Te Pō, The Night, is dark and cold. I gather that side of the character came from the Hawai'ian volcano goddess Pele, but as I live in New Zealand, not Hawai'i, I don't know the stories of the Hawai'ian gods.

I got the metaphor for sexual assault trauma as soon as that amazing Te Ka confrontation scene with the line about "stolen the heart from inside you/but this does not define you." I did not know that was a part of the actual inspiration story.

Well aside from the first time when the ocean sends her back (because she's totally unprepared for a voyage), the ocean does help her out. In Māori mythology, the god of the ocean is Tangaroa, and Tāwhirimātea is the god of the weather (including storms). When Moana (whose name means ocean, by the way) is shipwrecked and almost killed in the storm, that's Tāwhirimātea's influence.
The mythology goes that their parents Rangi-a-nui (sky father) and Papatūānuku (earth mother) were locked in a tight embrace, so close that there was no space between them for their children to grow and thrive. So Tāne Māhuta, god of the forest, grew up the trees and pushed them apart. Tāwhirimātea was furious about this and drove Tangaroa into the sea, then lashed rain and wind and storms onto all parts of the world in vengeance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C4%81whirim%C4%81tea
This may not have been what was intended by the writers but it's how I see it :)

This movie took many people, myself included, completely by surprise. I watched it in theaters on a whim because I was bored, and even during that first watching, I was kinda… meh about it. And then I was in my car driving home and I found myself singing the songs and thinking more and more about the movie and it got stuck in my head, so I went back the next day to watch it again… and fell in love with it. I don’t think anybody expected much out of the movie because it’s such a niche culture and Disney has a habit of papering over other cultures and watering them down to their own formula, but they made it with so much love to the Polynesian cultures in general that everybody fell in love with it as well.

First, I have to say that I so appreciate that you allow yourself to feel, and show emotions other than the normal people allow you to see. Tears are good for the soul, and I wish more people could just let themselves feel without fear.
Secondly: I love this movie. I could actually watch it every day, and not get bored. The writing, the polynesian voice actors, the joy, sadness, fear, and earned bravado. I can't get over how simply good this movie is.
Especially for little girls. It's uplifting, inspiring, and, as you said, motivating. Something little girls really have lacked. The big, butch man doesn't save her. He simply teaches her what he knows, and lets her save herself. That's not a common theme in movies that are made for little girls, and it's sorely needed.
Mulan was also good in this same vein.

Auli'i Carvalho, the actress who plays Moana - was 15 when she got the role. She was the last person to audition for the role. She speaks fluent Hawaiian, dances hula and attended an all-Hawaiian private school in Honolulu called the Kamehameha schools. You should react to her performing "How Far I'll Go" at the Oscars - amazing. The Rock went to a middle school and another Hawaii high school in Honolulu - a public school called McKinley high school. he left before graduating, however. His mom was of Samoan heritage, but he respects the Hawaiian culture. When I saw this movie in Hawaii, people were crying/cheering. It was so nice to see Polynesia represented faithfully and respectfully.

Maui's 'You're Welcome' is the favorite part of this movie, and I love his design. When you're ready to check out some older animated films, don't forget Disney's dark 'Black Cauldron' and Don Bluth's visually-incredible 'Secret of Nimh.' Also consider 'The Last Unicorn,' 'Flight of Dragons,' Ralph Bakshi's trippy 'Wizards,' a really bizarre short animated film, 'Double King.,' and 'Allegro Non Troppo.' an Italian parody of 'Fantasia' (but see 'Fantasia,' first).

It is so amazing to watch you as a dad react to a story like this and explaining why it is so important as a parent for your daughters to see this, and the joy and enthusiasm you have for sharing this with them is so uplifting and oddly healing.
My parents ensured I only watched content that reinforced the idea of wife mother serving the husband and only staying at home, and it took years before enough media trickled in to help me learn about more world views and as a girl being allowed to have my own dreams that aren't just about learning to shelve my agenda and push only for someone else's success.
Idk, with that just watching your response to this caused me to cry, it was cathartic and it made me so happy your girls will have so much broader a horizon and so much support and understanding about important messages. 😭🌹

Bro, you're not alone tears galore for me in this movie, everytime! Especially when Moana realises who TeKa really is. That whole scene is a powerful emotional hit. Tears in full flow for me, we all want to be known at our heart level, don't we?
This movie came out in my final years as a teacher in China. Loved every moment when I watched it. I became obsessed singing the songs from my playlist. Eventually our entire teachers office could be heard out in the halls as we teachers sang them together.
The school became somewhat absorbed with the songs, parents of our students would download the movie so their kids could learn the songs to sing with us.
It got to the point that if someone said "thank you" for anything, there would be a chorus of "you're welcome" in response. This movie really vibed an energy & life into our school, that is now one of my most treasured memories of my 15yrs there.
Maui is the shared lore that we Maori share with all our Island cousins, it's our shared oral history telling us how we're all connected to each other and I think Disney did a wonderful job of relating that shared history of many cultures that have shared history but distinct in themselves.

As soon as I heard you say “this reminds me of Hamilton” I was like um well, there’s a reason for that! Lin Manuel-Miranda co-wrote the score! Then I remembered that Lin sang in two of the numbers and just KNEW you’d be able to pick his voice out. You’re so talented at recognizing voices.
This film is a 10/10 for me as well. Still makes me cry at at least three points every time I see it. Just watching it here, without the music, I was tearing up. It’s such a fantastic story about self-discovery and determination and growth. You’re right, Disney is trying harder nowadays to impart the lesson that girls are just as able to be heroes as boys, and while friendship and help is important and okay to ask for, you don’t need a strong man to save the day when you’re fully capable of doing it yourself. I’m so glad you loved it enough to want to watch it again with your daughter(s) right away. :)
