Ariel, the fun-loving and mischievous mermaid, is enchanted with all things human. This is the movie that saved Disney's bacon. The studio had been on rapid decline since Walt's death in the 60s, producing movies that either only performed modestly or were outright flops. The studio decided to throw all their resources on one last-ditch effort to return to their roots with musical adaptations of fairy tales, hiring stage composers Alan Menkin and Howard Ashman. Their gamble paid off. The movie as a massive hit and sparked what became known as the Disney Renaissance, which lasted until the late 90s and produced some of their best-loved films.
And the reason they had the money to do so was because of the surprise successes of the Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company
oh yeah don bluth started his studio at the same time when disney was going down because he got tired of them.
while he was one of the animators for the mouse rescuers movie, he asked his higher ups why are their eyes just the fur color instead of white. he was told that it was "too expensive" so he went to test this out in his garage to animate a little on his own time and it was not really that expensive as it was implied. so he assumes his boss just told what he had been told.
so he took some guys and started his own studio and it hit hard right from the start with the secret of nimh.
@@Neevkl_7 it’s funny to me that so few people realize that the Great Mouse Detective came out BEFORE Little Mermaid. It hadn’t done all that well in theaters when it was released in 87 (personally I think it was because people still had to deal with the foul taste The Black Cauldron had left in their mouths, ugh!). But they re-released it in the early 90s after the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast “put them on the map” again, and a lot of people didn’t believe me when I told them I’d seen the movie years before.

When The Black Cauldron was released in theaters back in 1985, it was box office bomb which caused Disney’s studio to shut it down forever but with the release of The Great Mouse Detective, it had financial success which is why The Little Mermaid was released

People often get the wrong idea regarding Ariel. She wanted to be a part of the human world long before she met Eric. He was just the icing on the cake.
Eric was a hopeless romantic just like her. From him talking about meeting the right girl (on the ship); to falling for the girl who rescued him (when he barely saw her due to the sun, and only heard her sing); to his determination to finding and marrying her. He even hesitated from kissing Ariel in the rowboat because he was still holding out for the mystery girl (he just didn’t know it was Ariel).
Face it, these two are both headstrong and determined, as well as hopeless romantics. They were made for each other. 🤗❤️

Many are mistaken in thinking that Ariel only accepted the agreement with Ursula because of Eric, but it's much more than that, she accepted it for the dream of being a human being well described and exposed in her solo music.
Right? That always confused me. Disney princess movies have the “I Want” song, where that motivation drives their actions for the rest of the film and Ariel’s I Want song, “Part of You World” was sung before she even met Eric so how could she be wanting to go on land for Eric? Eric was clearly an afterthought but nice addition more than her actual dream.

@@personaldove I love how you say something like that and offer no elaborate. Those two women were also adults. Ariel is a teenage girl and a child. She was manipulated while she was UNDERSTANDABLY upset with her father. She made mistakes but she's.not foolish.
The thing about Ariel is that she already wanted to become human. She loved digging around sunken ships for surface "treasures" and longed to be able to walk/dance/explore the surface world.
She never considered going to Ursula to become human just for Eric. She went to Ursula because she was hurt/upset that her father destroyed her most prized possessions.
Also, it's worth mentioning that Ariel only considered going to Ursula because Flotsam and Jetsam basically took advantage of her emotional vulnerability by manipulating her with a broken piece of Eric's statue after Ariel originally flat-out turned down the eels' offers.

I like to think the real reason Ariel went to Ursula was actually directly due to King Triton.
Had he not blown up in front of her, verbally abused her, destroyed her room full of ALL these antiques that she almost died for in some cases, she would not have been pushed/ gone to the extreme of seeing the sea witch and thinking it's her only option.
Like sure the film puts Eric in a lot of the shots and makes the deal contingent on her earning his heart, but Ariel loved the surface world LONG before she ever laid eyes on him. And furthermore, HOW could you ever go back to your parents house after seeing them so violently react. After seeing years worth of effort hard work and love being thrown away. Knowing that once you got back, you'd feel like a prisoner in your own home and probably treated like one.
Ariel went to such extremes because her father went to such extremes.
Actually Sebastian has a Trinbagonian accent. As a Trinbagonian, people often think our natural accent is a bad fake Jamaican accent. Just look at the reception of Lily Singh’s dancehall song. While yes, the song was garbage, people were dragging her for having a garbage jaimaican accent but she was actually aiming for a Trini accent. Before the pandemic she’d come here for carnival all the time.
One of my bosses at my last job was Trini and that accent is burned into my brain from our weekly meetings. :P
@@ashleypenn7845 haha yeah. Like any country our accent ranges from "Americans will understand us" and accents that I struggle to understand being from her lol.
It's similar to patois cause we have a lot of similar culture obviously, we also integrate other languages into how we speak like Spanish and French words especially thrown in here and there.

Gotta share my Little Mermaid story:
I was a junior in college when Little Mermaid came out and the gang of people I hung out with all decided to go to the movie theater in the next town over to see it. We got to the movie theater and I managed to score a seat next to the cute blond girl I liked. A few minutes later all the girls stood up, did this little Chinese fire drill maneuver and the cute blond was now the raven haired Canadian girl who worked with me at the college library. I waited a minute or two before moving to the seat by the blond girl.
Just before the trailers started playing, the girls all stood together and did their little Chinese fire drill thing again. And, again, the Canadian girl sat down next to me. I was starting to think the entire movie trip had been a set up, because they all knew what a Disney buff I was.
Our granddaughter is five and now we get to watch all our favorite Disney movies with her.
I loved this movie for many years. One of my favorite things about this movie was Ursula. She was fairly unique among Disney villains. She was completely upfront with Arial about the deal she was making. She spelled out the terms and requirements, very, clearly. Even going so far as to clarify that the kiss needed to be one of true love, and the exact consequences of failing. And her stealing Eric away wasn't even cheating. Nothing in that contract prevented her from interfering. She was, surprisingly, honest in her deals.
She was... and she wasn’t. Ursula (and her eel henchmen too) used psychological manipulation to “trick” Ariel into doing what she wanted; al the while spelling out the terms clearly in such a way that she could never say she wasn’t warned.
- Like the interference, it was not technically cheating, but i _would_ call it dishonest: she knew it would simply never occur to Ariel to guard against the possibility that the Witch might involve herself in influencing the outcome.
@@StoryMing I fully agree. Ursula wouldn't be the villain if she didn't act dishonestly and with deceit. But her clarity in the deal was, refreshingly, rare with a villain. Look at Hades, in Hercules. He would not mention stuff, and change his deals, when he could all the time.
It is not Ariel’s fault since she was only a vulnerable teenager and Ursula preyed on that, justice for Ariel! 🔱 💥
Ursula is masterful in her use of psychology. She spells out the whole deal clearly, in such a way that Ariel cannot legitimately claim she wasn't warned-- AND YET... at the same time-- it was deceptive, a trap to draw her in.
Nah. If you think being a “vulnerable teenager” meant she was fated to fall into that trap, you haven’t met the teenagers I have. Don’t underestimate young people. Ariel was just stupid.

Experiences differ from person to person, you can't tell them that teenagers don't make stupid decisions just because the ones you have met haven't. Their experience isn't any less valid than yours. From what I've seen, teenagers make a lot of stupid decisions like Ariel did.
i think triton is a severe but very careful father, and it’s understandable that after everything he’s been through he’s scared of losing his daughter too. however, i love how he changes his attitude at the end and lets ariel be happy with eric 🤍
He is beyond severe, he is dictatorial and impulsive. All the stuff that happened in the movie was because he rage over a silly teen crush that in normal circumstances would have lasted at most a few weeks. Triton's actions and not Urla's made Ariel want to run away to the most faraway place of her father sight. He isn't careful, and he only loves Ariel when she does exactly what he wants, like performing that ridiculous introducement song, and the fact that he saved her from being a seaweed under Ursula control is not enough to say that he was a caring father

Is it strange that I was more afraid of King Triton than Ursula as a kid? I know that Ursula is a creepy and menacing villain, but Triton terrified me more, especially in the grotto scene.
Well, for one side we have Ursula, a witch that offers you a disadvantageous deal, but she tells you all the pros and cons, she explicit her conditions and gives you the right to choose to accept or not the deal.
From the other side, we have Triton, a dictatorial father that only express loves for his daughter when she is not present or when she acts exactly the way that he wants her to act. He gets angry easily and yells a lot, even worse he rage over the most stupid things like her teen daughter having a crush on a human (a crush that in normal circumstances would end in a few weeks), he destroys all her daughter treasures, not minding for even a moment about the fact his daughter is crying and pleading for him to stop.... the father of the year.
I was terrified of Triton when I was a child, and my dad was like ''WTF is wrong with this guy´´ any time we saw Triton's destroying Ariel's treasures. Triton is an authoritarian and scary dad, Ursula at most is comparable to a dealer that asks you, with not threat, if you want to buy drugs. So yep, for me, Triton is way scarier.

Triton was scary, a dad who destroys your stuff is scarier than someone not so subtlety offering you a terrible deal. Brute terror from uncontrolled temper scared me more than side angle sneaks, cause them you could find ways to work around. Over reaction parent figures are just really terrifying as a tiny person.
This was my favorite movie growing up but triton scared the shit out of me as a kid. The only part that scared me about Ursula was the end when she got really big
As a child, i felt the other way around but a few days ago I decided to rewatch the movie bc it has been years since I've seen it and I WAS SHOCKED at how Triton treated Ariel. Like, i didn't remember him being that bad and harsh to Ariel, it made me upset. So yeah, when I rewatched, Ursula was not as bad as I remembered her to be but Triton was the exact opposite of who I thought he was. Very unexpected lol

You’re the first person I’ve seen recognize Odo’s voice from this! It was the opposite for me. I watched this movie as a child and recognized the voice from the skull in The Last Unicorn. Then DS9 came out when I was a teen and I said, “This shapeshifter sounds like the chef from Little Mermaid…” Good ear, sir!
OMG same here! (Also, I had recognized his voice from an older TV show called "Benson". The actor played a snooty character named Clayton Endicott the Third.)
I didn't even know until i looked him up on IMDB. lol i was SO EXCITED.
I think it was even before Benson, I heard Rene Auberjonois’ voice as the evil Dr Braxis on Challenge of the Gobots. He was also a bad guy in one of the later Police Academy movies (I think 6), and in that movie he acts so against type as a suave yet clumsy criminal :)

That assumes the human script and the merfolk script are the same. I know, since the languages are the same, it stands to reason, but we never actually see Ariel reading human letters, so it’s possible that the writing systems are different enough to make communication in writing not an option.

I'd like to visit Denmark some day. My Aunt just moved back to the States from there so I hope I haven't missed my chance. 🙂

Fireworks have been around for a LONG time. They were created in Ancient China. (Qin Dynasty I believe but I may be wrong). And the voice for Grimsby/Eric's assistant is the guy who voices Roger in the animated 101 Dalmatians.

ASL has been around since the 1800's at least. And also, deaf representation was actually fairly decent in the 90s. There's a Hearing Impaired actress, Marlee something, and she was in a lot of 90s/00s shows. And there was an episode of The Little Mermaid Disney Channel series that featured a deaf/hearing impaired, Latina mermaid.
They actually are making a live action version, i believe they are done or at least nearly done filming and it's set to release next year!
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but Samuel E. Wright, who did the voice for Sebastian the crab, also played Mufasa in the original Broadway cast of The Lion King. He unfortunately passed away in 2021.
I'm going to speak in defence of one thing in this movie. First, you have to keep in mind that a lot of these old Disney movies are working with the trope of love at first sight. Now, I'm not saying there aren't problems with the trope, it can be damaging at its worst, but the assumption is that they're existing in a universe where you can see the person you're 'meant' to be with and, as Eric said, "Bam. It'll hit me [whoever], like lightning." It's the soulmate trope. You meet this person and you just know. Your eyes meet from across the room and you know this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. It's silly, but when I watch a Disney movie, especially the ones from before Frozen (which you could call the you-got-engaged-to-a-man-you-just-met!? movie), I just assume that love at first sight is a fundamental mechanic of their universe. So, Eric and Ariel's instant relationship, Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, Snow White - that is about how these fairytale universes actually work.
The first Disney movie to use CG was The Black Cauldron (1985). The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and Oliver and Company (1988) both used it too (if you watch them you'll be able to tell where, easily). They were using CG for The Little Mermaid. It didn't really look good yet and wouldn't for another 20 years lol but they were using it.
This Disney film is my second eldest sister’s favorite. As a kid, I would watch it a lot, though it was one of those that I didn’t appreciate as much at the time. After learning about this film’s history, that’s when my fascination of the The Little Mermaid sparked. As an adult and animator, this Disney film is a true inspiration to me, one of many from the Renaissance era!

All of these songs and the score from The Little Mermaid are wonderful (“Under the Sea” being my favorite song of the film)! This was a fraction of what was made by the genius of the late Howard Ashman and the great Alan Menken!

My all-time favorite movie ever. I absolutely adore Ariel, and Eric was my first definite crush, lol. I have an entire room full of Ariel memorabilia, and I learned to swim like her as well, with the tail and everything.
To answer your question about what Ursula did; in the musical adaptation, she's Triton's sister, who just did too much mischief to be allowed to stick around.
I like the original tale as well, even though it's terribly tragic; the mermaid - as a human, obviously - is on the ship when the prince and the girl who found him on the beach get married (so it's not a trick from the sea witch) and her sisters come to tell her that if she kills him before the sun rises the next day, she will be a mermaid again. They traded in their hair for a dagger for her to use. But she doesn't and jumps into the sea. When she dies, she turns to sea foam. In a later adapted version, the mermaid doesn't die and gets a second chance, being 'rescued' by the daughters of the wind who tell her that if she stays with them for a hundred year, she will then have a soul and get to go to heaven.
Also, as a human, every time the mermaid walks, she gets pain in her legs that is described as if she's stabbed by a thousand knives.
To finish on a more fun fact; the voice actress of Ariel, Jodi Benson, continued to voice her in every animation they did, including the series, the prequel and sequel, the guest role in Princess Sofia and also Wreck-It Ralph 2. And she also has a small role in the Disney movie Enchanted (if you haven't seen it yet, please do, it's wonderful) and also does the voice work in the movie Thumbelina (non-Disney, though it's on Disney+ now, and I also recommend)

It's one of my favorite Disney movies of all time !!! My number one !!! And I really love all the characters, especially Ariel !!! XD
22:36 Yes! DS9 is one of my favorite tv shows. And this film is probably my favorite Disney princess movie, along with Tangled!
Most of this movie was animated from trailers in the studio parking lot. The company was literally being broken up and sold off. This was a film the animators poured blood, sweat, and tears into, and it shows. It saved Walt Disney Animation. And sparked the Golden Age of Disney films. I would equate this film to Tangled, which while it didn't literally save the studio itself, was a reawaking of the studio and what they were really good at. Both tie as my favorite Disney films. Also, the whole spell and stealing Ariel's voice terrified the crap out of me as a kid. This was the first movie I remember seeing in the theater.
Anyone else think that Max is a great companion? He approved of Ariel at first smell, helped reunite them on the beach, recognized “Vanessa” as trouble, and helped break the spell. Such a good doggo!
Side note, my favorite Sebastian line: “What would her father say? 😭 …What WOULD her father say? 😨 Her father’d say he’s gonna kill himself a crab, that’s what her father’d say! 😱”

The Chef Louis scene destroying the entire kitchen for one crab in my mind is the most hilarious scene in an animated movie XD TOO funny! I wonder how Gordon Ramsay would have handled Louis in that situation. Hehe.
Plus, Les Poissons is a song that will leave a serious impression. Chef likes his job a little TOO much.
if you’re curious how they’d make the swimming/tails look real you should look into H2O:just add water (2006) and how they did it!! it was really well done
Unpopular opinion here maybe: even though I really enjoy seeing you react to stuff for the first time, I think you should set aside a couple of movies that you will watch with your daughter first. I'd still watch a "I've seen it last week with Charlotte, and now am rewatching it with you guys" video. It would be interesting to see you notice more details, and comment on how you felt the first time, and what your daughter thought of it. You can't have those "first time watching" moments back, and sharing some of them with your kids is worth a lot. Though obviously I don't know your situation, so it's up to you, no judgement either way.
I’m not disagreeing with you. I would also be totally fine watching him react to it watching it a second time.
But he might try to watch movies once before showing them to his kids to make sure they are age-appropriate. I know some parents who do that.

@@caseylochridge my parents did that for me when I was little because I've always been very susceptible to nightmares. The Little Mermaid was one that slipped past them and giant Ursula gave me a nightmare. So I can understand wanting to pre-screen movies if you have a sensitive kid. That doesn't sound like the reason he gave, but it's still a valid reason.
Your daughters will enjoy watching this with you. When mine was the age of your oldest, she wore out the VHS tape, playing it over and over and over and over and...
This was my absolute favorite Disney princess movie growing up. We watched it all the time. Ariel is the most beautiful Disney princess in my opinion.

The late 80's was the start of Disney using CGI in their animated movies. If you ever watch The Great Mouse Detective (86), there's a climactic clock tower battle scene that was heavily CGI.

Triton had a good reason for hating humans as he blames them for the death of his wife.( this was shown in more detail in the sequel) His grief made him scared for his all his daughters’ safety so he banned them from going to the surface however it clouded his judgment on the fact that not all humans were bad. His love for his daughter is evident when even though Ariel disobeyed him he would do anything to save her including taking her place on the contract.
Long ago some princes and princesses’ marriages were arranged and they never actually met until the wedding day itself. Even though Eric already wanted to marry the girl who saved him, Ursula as Vanessa had him under her control so made him say that they were marrying straight away.

If you want to see a version that's truer to the original Hans Christian Andersen story, I recommend the 1974 animated short film narrated by Richard Chamberlain - Thanks!!! edit: The chef is Rene Auberjonois (Odo)! In 2023 there will be a live-action Little Mermaid movie starring Halle Bailey as Ariel (Disney version) !
I hate who they chose for Ursula. Someone like Queen Latifia or even a drag queen (to pay homage to the drag queen Divine, who Ursula is based off of)

People in the olden days didn’t have the luxury of falling in love. Lots were arranged by the girl’s father and the guy’s father for the most part. Women came with dowries. It was a business exchange. I love how Jay is so invested in the story. Lol. This was my Frozen. It started the line of wonderful Disney movies that came after.

So here is what happened to Ursula according to the lore given to us by the musicals. She, like Ariel, had several sisters and one brother, that brother was Triton(Ariel's father). Ursula killed all of her sisters but made it look like they died under mysterious circumstances. Triton banished her when he found out but she cried out, in typical villain fashion, she would be back for the crown! Also her necklace is very important it was given to her by their father and Tritons um trident was given to him. Her necklace has many special powers which she abuses for her own selfish gain and she practices dark witch craft, this and of course actual murder got her banished.

Disney’s live action The Little Mermaid has wrapped filming and is in post production release date slated for 2023! Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, the voice of Luca will be the voice of flounder… and quite a few well-know names making up the rest of the cast 👍🏼

alot of people think Sebastian is supposed to be Jamaican but he's not, its supposed to be a Trinidadian accent. the actor said in an interview he got inspiration from his college roommate for the accent.

Back then, the computer tech work the stairs was pretty much make a model in the computer, use it for an animated background, then print it out on to cels and paint it, then animate it the old way.

I've been trying to ask my little sister to watch The Little Mermaid and other Disney classics
Of course Disney movies would involve magic of some form, but there's something about hand drawn animations and characters naturally magical, I've seen that magic in some of the animation studios that do hand drawn animations today, and you just can't replace that with computer animation.
Ariel's home is named, "Atlantica."
Those shriveled creatures are mermaids who bargained with Ursula and failed
I find it a tad strange, a person watching Luca before The Little Mermaid.
There's a video that compares the two; 20 times Luca copied the Little Mermaid. It's a good video that explains how similar they are but doesn't try to make either look bad.
I would highly recommend The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. The prequel to this.
