  • Hey, I'm Liv and in this video we will cover the cost, charging, weather and tips for driving a Tesla around Iceland! If you have any other questions, drop them in the comments below!
    COST
Traveling in Iceland was never going to be a budget-friendly adventure. But with its remote location and stunning natural wonders like waterfalls, glaciers, and the northern lights, Iceland is definitely a bucket-list destination. We hired a Tesla Model Y mainly because we liked having the bigger space which felt safer in these roads. We hired it through Lava Car Rental and they had an option to include supercharging in the price and with petrol costing about 330krona per litre hiring an electric vehicle was actually cheaper than a normal petrol car. All up for about 9 days it cost around AUD$1000. Comparing this to a petrol car we would have spent well over $1500 for a similar size vehicle and petrol costs for the 9 days.
    CHARGING
There is so much infrastructure in Iceland to support this and even our Airbnb had a charger for overnight. Along with Tesla superchargers, Lava Car Rental also gave us free charging at stations managed by On and Isorka. It was super easy to search for charging stations on our route, and Teslas can even precondition the battery for fast charging. To charge from 20-80% it took about 25 minutes. Eighty per cent would be able to get us from one side of Iceland to the other.
    WEATHER
We travelled in March in 2024 so it meant we got a mix of clear, rainy, windy, icy and snowy conditions and everything in between. The Tesla handled this well, even the snowy parts as the wheels were equipped with snow studs.
    TIPS
Tesla charge points are weather proof so you can rest easy at night knowing it's fine if the weather changes (which it likely will). There is a saying in Iceland that if you don’t like the weather, just wait 15minutes and it will change. Another cool thing is that because a Tesla doesn’t have a normal petrol or diesel engine taking up space in the front of the car, there is a front trunk or what we like to call, a frunk. This was really handy to store food although one very cold night, our milk froze in our frunk which is not a phrase I ever expected to say.
I can highly recommend driving an electric car in Iceland but whatever mode of transport you choose to explore Iceland, you will not be disappointed.
We travelled in March which meant it was the fringe season (mid-season) for tourism in Iceland. If you are thinking of travelling in late autumn or early spring, this video is for you.

Hello Olivia , i’m planning to do the same next month. My question is if you stayed in any of the campsites? Also was this charging cost was for ring road?

@iankitlather that's so exciting that you are going next month! We didn't stay at any campsites so I'm not sure about the set up there but where our accommodation didn't have charging available, there was plenty of public charging spots, similar to a traditional petrol station. For our rental with Lava Car Rental, they included supercharging and charging with two other providers through out all of Iceland, including if there were any spots on Ring Road. I hope that helps 🙏 let me know if you have any other questions 😊
