    Why this song and this performance are not better known is a mystery. The song is timeless and haunting, and, man, just his voice and that piano fill every square inch of the space!! This is one of my all-time favorites!!

    In my humble opinion I think the album "A Single Man" is much better then what critics said about it...

      Well, Elton himself never plays anything live off the album (except maybe song for guy)
      also Gary Osborne wrote all the lyrics.
      I have mix feelings on the lp with big dipper, shooting star, reverie and song for guy being the exception.
      Still it beats the next record he did by leaps and bounds, the infamous victim of love !!
      can't listen to that lp to this day.

      They are jaded, dull lyrics, devoid of any real meaning or inspiration.
      A workman's insertion of words in an arrangement to earn a dollar.

    I love this performance! Simple elegant arrangement & heartfelt phrasing in his vocals. Thom Bell suggested to Elton to sing in a lower vocal register on these sessions, and it was a great suggestion. It gave Elton more tools with his full vocal range.💜

    Thanks for this one! One of my all-time favorite songs, along with Tonight and Rocketman. I'd love to hear him do those two just like this one. I love the purity of Elton alone with his piano. This could have been the official release as far as I am concerned.

    I was a kid, and loved this song. Always takes me back to this girl, and the break up-First love kind of break up. I also loved Blue Moves. I must have been a pretty screwed up kid. LOL

    I can just hear Billie Eilish singing this. Breathing fresh air into it for fresh ears. In fact after her terrific new recent release -- a surprise ten song collection of wildly obscure Elton songs like this would just be magical.

      John Vargo technically, both are correct. Originally, it was released in 77 on A Single Man, then later with an alternate end on The Complete Thom Bell Sessions

    I live in the States, but I KNOW I saw this on TV here -- I watched the whole show just so I could see Elton. But I can't remember under what circumstances I saw it! I had never seen M&W before and thought they were quite weird! Incidentally, there's another, VERY long version of the song on "The Thom Bell Sessions" EP that was actually recorded before "ASM".

    This is a truncated version of the song. (Same with the version from "A Single Man.") The "Thom Bell Sessions" version is almost eight minutes long and is every bit as epic as "Someone Saved My Life Tonight."     I bought the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials DVD just so I could see the full performance of this! The album version doesn't do this song justice.

      It's from Elton's, "A Single Man" album from 1978. This is one of the few times he has performed this song live.
