Elton John - Indian Sunset (BBC Sounds For Saturday 1971)

- In late 1971, a 24-year-old Elton performed his just-released album Madman Across The Water in its near entirety in front of a BBC television studio audience in London. Broadcast on BBC2’s Sounds for Saturday on April 1972, Elton delivered a captivating solo recital of ‘Indian Sunset’. Nearly fifty years later, the song continues to astonish audiences as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, where Elton describes the profound lyric about the demise of the Native American population as a “a two-and-a-half hour movie”.

Elton John - Indian Sunset (BBC Sounds For Saturday 1971)

2Pac brought me here many years later. Better late than never, to appreciate such a beautiful song.
Eminem produced that song (ghetto gospel) I just read that on another video crazy
@@batwizzo does anyone know what sample of the song used in Tupac song called Ghetto star
Same here 🖐
Ghetto gospel, what a song only just realised elton was involved, blew my mind
Samee
Probably his most under appreciated song
sigve borgan,
This is the first time I’ve seen “under appreciated song (band/musician)” aptly used.
I read that so often on YT, how this and that song is under appreciated. We're listening to it right, a song almost half a century old, so it can not be *that* under appreciated.
fourth-most under-appreciated, after Levon and empty garden and Val Halla
@@WJPindar and madman across the water
actually the whole album
Whole heartedly agree with this. An actual masterpiece
Personally, this is one of Elton's best songs in terms of displaying how amazing his vocal range is
And piano

ELTON was a great composer but MARC BOLAN ans STEVE PEREGRINE TOOK was real MAGIC ..BOLAN words have the magical qualitive nobody has...BOLAN was unique till the days he muck himself i d married then a girl of Woodlands Stellen bosch .za earth of elf prophets sears and ages Angels of the Ages
Post surgery his voice changed so much , but he carried on and produced brilliant music , Bernie also has to be one of the greatest ever songwriters to live ,
Voice and expression and diction. One of a kind. The real Elton John.
Brings tears to my eyes every time. A classic that never gets the attention it deserves.
Me too. Not sure why, but very emotional for me and I'm not usually an emotional guy. Maybe a past life thing, who knows, but it touches me deeply every time I hear it.
Bernie, the storyteller, at his best.
Elton, the musician, at his best.
One of my favorite songs, ever, from any artist.
I'd be honored if some Elton John fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of LEVON and ROCKET MAN on my YT channel in tribute to the masters of 20th century lyricism & composition (Elton & Bernie). Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.
Mário Marinato I agree ☝️
It's genuinely incredible how many amazing songs these two have made. I listen to Elton every day and somehow find yet another beautiful piece every day. This song came on automatically while I was listening to music during calculus and I had to stop myself from bawling my eyes out in the middle of class on the very first listen. Unbelievably talented.
Missed here Ray Cooper, the percussionist at his best in later performances
Yup
What a voice, what a pianist, what talent, and so young, what a fabulous career sir Elton John.
What an incredible performer he was in those early years...❤💜💙💫
This song is why Elton is the greatest rock artist ever
This is one of the best things I’ve ever seen
I honestly don't know how he could sing this song without tears running down his face. I've been listening to this album for most of my long life and I cry every time. Every time.
No words to describe...
Best of the best! 100% Ghetto Gospel, and 100% elton John! Respect!
The song "Ghetto Gospel"
by Tupac samples and repeats the lyrics, "Those who wish to follow me I
welcome with my hands" and, "And the red sun sinks at last into the
hills of gold," and mixes together the first half of the line, "And
peace to this young warrior" and half of "without the sound of guns."
This song makes me cry every time since the 70s. Genius.
Word
I can't even convey how thrilling it is to search for this song and see a LIVE version come up. Dayyam. His 70-80 output cemented his place as one of the immortals.
70-76 were the platinum years (7 consecutive US #1 albums from 72-5)
his newer albums need recognition they are genius
This song just grabs your heart - 50 years later or 500 years of the experience
Wow, me sorprende no haber escuchado esta canción con anterioridad. Muy sentida y emotiva canción ❤️
@@mizofan agreed, plus literally every live performance between those years are just unbelievable. I've ALWAYS believed that the mark of a truly great performer is their ability to sing live (for example, Freddie Mercury and Queen at live aid) and by god I've yet to find a Elton song that's better in studio than live. Either the live version is a beat for beat perfect replica of the studio version (which in of itself is insanely impressive) or it becomes its own unique experience, with minute but beautiful, stumble changes throughout that truly make each performance it's own masterpiece. Just an amazing artist
My brother got the cassette album when he traveled abroad in 1978. We lived in a quiet, little town near Bangalore, India. I fell in love with all the songs, especially Indian Sunset. One of the most underrated songs in music history. Simple lyrics, soulful rendering. Truly blessed to have heard it.
His voice control is ridicolous. Even in lives like this the beginning with barely any music background is impeccable and so on point. the best♥️
First time I've heard this Elton has a great voice!
I'm so happy he added this on his farewell tour setlist. It's such a beautiful song.
One of his best songs off of his best album.
One of his best albums for sure, but i think it's not quite as strong after this track. I prefer Tumbleweed Connection, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic, but of course it's all a matter of taste.
Two instruments. Voice and piano. An entire orchestra could not do better. The piano actually sounds like water flowing gently after the line “the healing waters run”. Chills x infinity.
In my opinion his finest work with Bernie's incredible lyrics.....Elton and Bernie will never be equaled in any genre of Music.....never.....
The most saddest song sung by Earth's most talented singer. Solidarity from Watford ✊
i cry whenever i listen to it. The beautiful melody just seems to capture the great tragedy that happened to the Native Americans so well. RIP those that died so long ago now but are not forgotten. None are free 'til all are free!
This song is amazing - the whole album is pure poety and Elton's voice at it's very best. Even now, with all the damage and hard living, he still sounds great. I always get chills every time I listen to this song.
This is my favorite Elton song. The first time I heard it I almost cried. It’s so much better on this live recording than the album version.
Bernie is a poet and Elton a musician, a perfect marriage.
Man, I love this early stuff.
Raw Elton. My favorite Elton song and performance by him.
One of his best songs!
Great lyrics, beautiful tune, amazing vocals!
A masterpiece! 🎹🎼🎹🎼🎹
By far the best live version of this gem!
My favourite song ❤
If anyone is wondering where the sample is for ghetto gospel here are the time stamps: 3:41 and 5:45
That's what I call Perfection! 💖
Dammit why do I have to cry everytime I listen to this
Again, he touches the soul. Beautiful lyrics. Elton was incredible in 1971.
Elton IS still incredible

Such a magnificent tribute to Native Americans. Best of both Bernie and Elton. My favorite.
It takes a genious to create that kind of lyrics.
At the same time, it takes another genious to make the right balance between minor and harmony in order to make that "drama" such lyrics deserves. BRILLIANT.!!!
I cry every time I hear this song - first time was over 30 years ago
For soon I'll find the yellow moon along with my loved ones.
Where the buffaloes graze in clover fields without the sound of guns.
Some of the most beautiful, poetic and emotional lyrics ever written. Sends chills down me everytime I hear them
Just when I thought I had heard all of his songs. Wich I love all of his music, I find one , I never heard before. I love this
Better late than never my love
Try Rotten Peaches or TICKING.
Me too. Iit is good it finally found us.
Bernie Taupin was smitten by the American West. That's where these sad lyrics came from. Check out Elton's album called Tumbleweed Connection. The album is filled with songs about the American West, thanks to Bernie Taupin.
My favourite Elton john song, his vocals are truly amazing. He had a god-given talent between 1971-76.
The '71 Sounds for Saturday special is my favorite Elton performance and my favorite live performance from any artist. The playing and vocals are absolutely perfect on every track.
51 years a fan , this brings me too tears every time. His voice is truly amazing. My life growing up would not have the same . Brilliant performance
This man is one of my favorite artists.
Such a great performance, sounds so amazing live!
Each time I listen to this song, I always cry by the end.
Lyrics and Melody are just amazing ! Vocals are unbeatable !
Fans...We are in the Presence of Greatness.
A great song .One of his best.😢
I can't believe I never knew Ghetto Gospel was a sample of this song. I've always wondered how they got Elton to sing on it. Now i've found out the genius of Eminem for using this song.
His singing is so good here. I love this set. I think his generally singing slides live after this point until around 1977 or so.
In the '70s and '80s, Elton John rarely played this song live, but he
introduced it into his setlist on his 1994 tour and played it at many of
his concerts in the 2010s, including on his farewell tour. He told in 2011 that it is one of his favorites to play live. "Nobody knows that song at all," he said. "It's an obscure track from , and it gets a standing ovation every night. It's a six-minute movie in a song."
....just the piano and his voice... simply amazing!!!!
This is a prime example of why the 70s were the best decade for music. Like, what artist now has the balls to make a song about the native Americans? This is so creative. No other decade produced cooler songs than this one.
I know right :(
Listen to creek Marys blood From Nightwish is about the trail of Tears.
what artist has the balls? literally every music artist and famous person won't shut up about whatever injustices they can imagine
natives are making, recording and selling their own music now.
I played madman this afternoon again, and then this song... absolutely brilliant!
What a uniquely talented combination Elton John and Bernie are.Their catalogue of brilliant music and songs will stand the test of time.
That's why I love Elton John, and Bernie Taupin:perfect lyrics, voice and melody
Beautiful! An aside: My boyfriend and I and a few other North Texas State U students were actors in a video made by film students to go with this song/album on his tour of that time. .We got the red carpet treatment and the preview in Dallas, but I've been unable to find it online (of course, it was late 1971 or early 1972) Still love the passion expressed in this song and have to play it every once in awhile....
Untouchable greatness. Gives me the chills every time.
total class. Brilliant musicianship and writing.
Goosebumps. Majestic performance!
By far the best version of this Elton Bernie classic.
I honestly never looked into the history of elton until I watched the movie recently. I was born in 75 so was a pup when he was on this journey. I have been captivated by so many of his performances I have watched. See this man in a new light now, absolutely phenomenal musician and singer and Bernies song writing is beyond brilliant. What a duo!!!! 2 legends in different fields ....sublime
I am going to get Madman Across the Water after hearing this from his concert Million Dollar Piano. What a tribute to all Native people.
Singing live,a forgotten art.Genius.
What a treasure it had to be to sit and watch this
Elton sang this last night at his farewell concert in Coffs Harbour. I forgot what a fantastic song it was. So underrated.
Marcus Jones I was at the concert as well. Brought me too immense tears. Absolutely soul shaking.
This song’s melody is off the charts.
One of my favorite songs ever. It is a song that seems lost but those of us who love Elton John (and Bernie Taupin) know this is a great song.
Didn't realise some of the lyrics here were also in Tupacs Ghetto Gospel. What a genius of a musician. His music will live on forever.
its almost impossible to imagine that the same elton performing here is the same elton performing today. his voice is almost completely unrecognizable. the vocal range he displays here is a testament to his incredible talent
He's 72 poor guy😉... But still an amazing piano player
He had surgery in his throat is the 80's and that changed his voice. Also, he's is 72 now. I went to his concert last November and can assure it is the best concert I have ever attended. He's amazing!
Elton also smoked a lot of pot in the early days. That can mess up your voice too.
We all get old. No escape. Ride the river.
He has left a lasting legacy. I havent.
This Is Simply One Of His Best Performance For Me, I'm Inlove With This Song And The Madman Album. Thank Sir Elton🇿🇦
Yes, that really was something!
This song is a movie story told in 6 minutes.
One of the most powerful songs to ever be released. The lyrics and melody and arrangement are beyond nearly anything offered in the rock/pop genre in this or any other decade. Elton is the 5th Beatle.
TremblingGiant *George Martin cries*
So much better than any Beatle. No comparison. Elton John is in a class by himself.
Better than the Beatles
John Lennon said Elton was the best since the Beatles.
@@mizofan JL was right.
The Sir Elton John,Best and Best .
Wow, Reg. Just wow...
I am so hyped up for Rocketman
Hope I'm not the only one who's been waiting since 2013
Because I like old art, anticipation is very rare for me; Rocketman was the first release I ever anticipated.
New one for us. He could go far, this bloke.
Impossible to match, not because any particular but the whole package, the composition, the piano arrangement, the beautiful melody and lyrics, and that voice from heaven. Impossible.
This is not just a song. Is a poem. Is a story. Is an epic melody. Madman Across The Water was the second CD I ever bought in my life. I still have it. This song remind me my great grand father. I was living with him, when I bought this CD. I loved him a lot. And every time I listen to this song, I remind him.
One of my first cassette tape madman is the best
I'm moved with every listening. This album and this Song are immortal
And the healing waters run, this saved my life!!!
These earliest songs are probably my favorites. This one and “Burn Down the Mission” and “Madman”
This is phenomenal. Such a powerful version, Elton is faultless, and is only matched by the scope of Bernie's western epic lyrics.
How does Elt remember all of Bernie's complex lyrics -- he's a legend
He flubbed the opening line!
When my best friend died suddenly and completely unexpectedly a few months ago, the line " this I can't believe I said, I can't believe our warlord's dead" came into my head in the first hour after hearing the news. I then sang the whole song in my backyard, surprisingly remembering the entire lyric, even though I'd only listened to the song a handful of times since the 70's
@@devfletch "& peace to this young warrior comes..." it's hard to forget lyrics that tell a story. Sorry about your friend.
This is a completely underrated song, the melody, the chords, the story. Imagine being in the audience watching this. You'd be absolutely blown away. A lot of Elton John songs lyrics can be a little bit flamboyant and meaningless but the narrative to this song is world class.
Beautiful voice he had when was young.
He still does. Just different. But even if he didn't have the throat surgery, who has the same voice in 60's and 70's that they had in their 20's. He's lucky that he is here to sing at all after what he went through in life.I'm grateful he's still here.
@@kathleencollins5531 the singer of a-ha is about 60 and still has his range intact and relatively identical to that of his youth
@@awrencallinthewoods474 Also Jeff Lyne from ELO sounds scarily the same

Oh Elton, we’ve gotten so old now, but your piano and voice I remember.
I Love Elton ❤
He has way too many songs that most people have never heard since his BEST music never got any airplay!
Leave it to two young Englishmen to capture the shame of this country's history in a single song. I was only 13 when this came out and even then I was floored.
"And peace to this young warrior comes with a bullet hole".
I'm crying so hard, now.
Grow up
Jared Ellis ha
Yes really sad.
Jay Ellisano Ahahaha amazing 😂😂😂
Sad
Incredible. Best complete solo artist ever. Also. Bernie Taupin and Elton were one of the best tandem writers ever. 👏
