  • Well that was easy. Rarely do i get this lucky... sure, i could spend another 6 hours going through this thing tip to tail, but its not worth it... If only it was about 150lbs lighter i could probably find some excuse to hold onto the ol' girl. Not the most in depth video, but hey, its a little bit of sled content while we patiently wait for snow!

    Love these old vmax sleds. Any Yamaha for that matter.

    Some of my best childhood memories were riding circles around my mom and dads house on my brothers 1 lung 292 Yamaha, and later his 340 spitfire. 40 years later we still love old sleds, we just made a 10 hour round trip to buy a 1980 skidoo blizzard 7500 with a 583 rave motor. Currently trying to buy one of these that only has 400 miles on it.

    I know of one that has 18,000 miles on it, never been rebuilt and still runs great. There are lots of old sleds/ engines that have 7 to 10,000 miles still running great. It depends how they are treated and how well maintained.

    • @NorthwoodsNoise
      @NorthwoodsNoise  Рік тому +1

      I believe it, but I think that's clearly an exception and not very common. Definitely depends on maintenance and the quality of the factory build (luck) among other things. 9 times out of 10 any 90s sled with 4000+ miles on it needs a top end, crank seals and is still running factory chaincase lube because the reality is that most people just dont maintain them lol.

      I had a 03 viper I just sold it last year it had 18000 miles on it too and the engine was never tore down. My buddy had a 700 mountain max a few years ago with 35000 miles and never tore down. He said he got a new one because he was tired of riding the same sled so long. Yamaha is the most reliable there is in my opinion

    I the same sled, was a great one to go from the SS440 that yamaha made! Those Yamaha's had the double choke system, pull it up then go another bit till the choke lever is all they way up. Starts much easier. They will pull 80 miles per hour. Yes a bit heavy but as they call them "SLS" straigh line sled"! Good save.

    Yamaha stacked up huge against the other brands.the vmax was heavy.the phazer,srv 540 phaser and ss 440 are amazing bullet proof sleds and easy to use.The other brands are what they are recall fests.standard maintenance of yamahas and they will treat you well for decades :)

      This one seems to run pretty well. Okay, I knew it was 95 or 96, couldn't remember which. If it was a Vmax 4 I'd be holding onto it, but she's a bit too heavy for playin in the powder.

    • @NorthwoodsNoise
      @NorthwoodsNoise  Рік тому +1

      I'd pull the carbs and thoroughly clean if you havent already. But if you already bypassed tors I assume you cleaned carbs already too. After carbs I'd check the oil usage. Mark the level on your tank, go for a ride and see how much it drops. If its excessive, probably time for oil pump seals. After that I'd look at pulling the clutch and cleaning that out/rebuild it. I'm not super familiar with these sleds, but that's what I'd look at first regardless of make/model.
