  • I recommend you use good pair of headphones or good speakers.
    This is a comaprison of the CABINETS ONLY. The picture in the thumbnail shows 2 stacks, but as it says in the beginning- head used for both cabinets is Friedman, so the test is between
    Friedman 2x12 8ohm V30 closedback cabinet
    and
    Bogner 2x12 8ohm V30 oversized closedback cabinet

    Oh, how interesting! I listened on studio monitors, then on laptop and then on phone to refresh my perception. :) Each has its advantages, but at the half of the video, I went for an A. The reason is a dominating harsh saturation somewhere 4kHz+ and a scoop in the midrange, which is the most defining aspect of guitar tone. Speaker A can be EQ'ed with amp knobs to be more similar to B, but B will nevar be as A. Yes, B is brighter and can be good in mix, but it truly sounds unbalanced with holes in spectrum.
    Actually I'm in a search for a cabinet and this convinced me how other cheaper cabinets with the same speakers compare to more expensive ones.

    Before even listening, I am so happy you made this video. I just picked up a friedman SS-100 v2 and am trying to figure out which 4x12 to go with.
    I've always loved the sound from my Dad's Bogner cab's but was wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get a Friedman cab to match or if I should run a Bogner, I have a feeling it could be quite the combo.
    Anyways, I'll listen in and if you're interested keep you updated on the route I go! This video will no doubt help me lock in my choice.

    Interesting comparison. I think the cabinets reflect the inherent tone of the respective amplifier brands. Bogner = thick and chewy. Friedman = tight and more compressed. Both sound great, but I would choose the Bogner. Someone commented that they would sound fantastic together and I agree.

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 2 роки тому +1

      I agree. There are attributes that the amp contribute, and attributes that the speaker contribute. These amps are more similar in tone than the speakers are. Most of what we are hearing is the speaker. I would most likely prefer the Friedman head with the bogner cabinet. To each their own.

  • @LANeverSleeps
    @LANeverSleeps 5 років тому +2

    Listening on Kali LP-6 and Sony MDR 7506 here. It seems like the Bogner cabinet has some resonant lows while while the Friedman has some resonant upper mids/highs.
    I like the Friedman better for distortion. More clarity in the upper mids but still punchy in the lows. However I think the Bogner sounds better on the clean channel where its resonant lows help give a beautiful clean tone.
    Choosing between the two, the Friedmans are made in Southern California and you can get them on payment plan from Zzounds. Bogners are Chinese made except for the Bogner Custom Shop items. I'm still undecided on a cabinet, but I'm looking more towards the Friedmans every day.

    • @TomaszGutka
      @TomaszGutka  5 років тому

      thanks for this detailed opinion! This Bogner cab says "CUSTOM SHOP" on the back so I guess it's not Chinese. Also, I tried open back and other cabs from Bogner, but none of them even came close, so that may be the one that's quality made. Bonus fact: It has some kind of a thick foam on the back inside the cab, which other cabs don't have

    The Bogner is more neutral, the Friedman projects more of that treble spike you get with the Chinese V30's, might help cut through in a mix but there bass is also quite woofy. The Friedman might come across a little more 3D at low volume in say a bedroom or guitar store but it a band setting the novelty would soon wear off, my pick still goes to the Bogner.

  • @thaile4417
    @thaile4417 Рік тому +1

    Nice comparison! Is the speaker wiring in both cabs the same (parallel or series)? I'm trying to figure out if I can mimic the tone of the Friedman cab with a couple of v30 speakers and a cheap cab enclosure. If the tone comes from the actual construction of the cab enclosure then I guess I can only save up for a real Friedman cab

    @MRay-zj4ro 5 років тому +4

    I like both quite a bit but the Bogner is a bit more balanced and pleasing. I like the clarity of the highs from the Friedman at certain points as well. So the question is can one cab move a bit in the other cabs territory if need be? Would it be fair to say that clarity is the only thing you can't add without changing the EQ without changing the character with treble? Is it a true statement to say that if you like the sound of both cabs buying the one with more clarity would give you more options with EQ for different sounds? I think I hear a more detailed sound from the Bogner but I don't really trust my ears at this point.

    • @MRay-zj4ro

      Talking to myself here, ha!, the weird bit about the Friedman is it seems as though you get almost a flat slightly muted range that add a greater contrast to when the amp\cab nail an especially pleasing note\chord. Like a rainy day where the all of a sudden the Sun shines bright. The Bogner is just a beautiful Summer day without the contrast.

    Well I’ve owned both cabs at the same time, still own the Friedman. Also that Friedman is not meant to be on wheels plus the cab size of the Bogner is much much larger - it’s 4x12 sized. The Friedman is more compact. I highly prefer the Friedman’s sound and ergonomics

    The bogner sounds like a smaller cabinet, the friedman has much more low end. Are you sure you have the A and B right? sounds backwards to me

    • @TomaszGutka
      @TomaszGutka  6 років тому +1

      low end difference can be attributed to the depth of the cabinet. Bogner is slimmer and in addition to that, it is padded with some kind of foam on the inside of the back. Friedman is much deeper with no padding and it's the same case as with Mesa recto cab which is almost identical in dimensions and has very similar, scooped and rich in low end sound

    • @MatsHeyWire
      @MatsHeyWire 6 років тому

      Tomasz Gutka can the Friedman be EQ'ed to sound the same as the Bogner? I like your answer by the way

    • @TomaszGutka
      @TomaszGutka  6 років тому

      of course it can be tweaked a litte, but even if you add mids on the EQ, they still sound "sharp", but I can promise they both sound great in the mix- I had various cabinets: mesa (recto, compact and thiele), orange (closed and open), vox, bogner, friedman, ross tone, laboga, fender and I end up leaving Bogner, but Friedman gets the second place. Also, what annoyed me in most cabinets was how difficult they were to carry. Bogner has handles on the side, which are the best (especially when you put head on top and you want to lift it while moving, for example cables or door still), while still having one handle on top which helps when I put it in a trunk of my car and wheels that can be quickly detatched. So it combines all the good stuff from all the cabinets mentioned in one, plus it makes the least noice around due to the foam inside and it has tilted front so it's easier to hear live. I heard that open back option of this cab is not as good, but I had no chance to compare them myself

    • @TomaszGutka
      @TomaszGutka  6 років тому +3

      I did my best trying to set the mic in the exact distance from the speaker and I used laser pointer to place the mic as identical as possible in relation to speaker for both cabs (I aimed for the edge of the cap, straight, no tilt). Also the room was the same, I swapped the cabinets (both on casters) and just tweaked the mic stand as described. Plus no post production, that's the raw recording from SM57 straight into the Focusrite interface. So yeah- that's almost entirely the difference of the cabinet itself, I can also confirm that's true to the difference I was hearing while testing them side by side for over a week.
