    Before even listening, I am so happy you made this video. I just picked up a friedman SS-100 v2 and am trying to figure out which 4x12 to go with. I've always loved the sound from my Dad's Bogner cab's but was wondering if I should just bite the bullet and get a Friedman cab to match or if I should run a Bogner, I have a feeling it could be quite the combo. Anyways, I'll listen in and if you're interested keep you updated on the route I go! This video will no doubt help me lock in my choice. Thanks!!

    Oh, how interesting! I listened on studio monitors, then on laptop and then on phone to refresh my perception. :) Each has its advantages, but at the half of the video, I went for an A. The reason is a dominating harsh saturation somewhere 4kHz+ and a scoop in the midrange, which is the most defining aspect of guitar tone. Speaker A can be EQ'ed with amp knobs to be more similar to B, but B will nevar be as A. Yes, B is brighter and can be good in mix, but it truly sounds unbalanced with holes in spectrum. Actually I'm in a search for a cabinet and this convinced me how other cheaper cabinets with the same speakers compare to more expensive ones.

    the b is really harsh typical of v30 the highs are harsh the mids not soft enough ... the a is more melodious the best tones are with soft highs and pronounced mids (warm)

    Guessed correctly even before hearing them first example of the B cab… 🤣 I’ve had a Bogner OS 2x12 for 18 years, long enough to know V30’s don’t have that typical V30 harsh crispness in that cab, for some reason.

    I own both these cabs and really love both of them but IMO the Mesa sounds better and more balanced overall. I gig with the Mesa way more. The Bogner is a killer cab but slightly the more harsh sounding of the 2 in real life. Just my opinion.

    Nice comparison! Is the speaker wiring in both cabs the same (parallel or series)? I'm trying to figure out if I can mimic the tone of the Friedman cab with a couple of v30 speakers and a cheap cab enclosure. If the tone comes from the actual construction of the cab enclosure then I guess I can only save up for a real Friedman cab

      There definitely is something different about a well constructed cabinet. In a lot of cases...the Friedman, Bogner, Splawn, Orange, Engl, Hesu cabs you get what you pay for in construction and awesome tone. Definitely worth the extra ## for me. 🤘🤘🤘

    B is better for livey riffs. Knee jerk reaction lends people to go with a thicker guitar tone but character isn’t considered . B has more character , a is simply flatter and more in your face , takes up frequencies more Vital to vocals and other instruments Also when recording you tend to double guitars, doubling a would get too quick I think

But somehow I don't hear any effect. Do you have an idea? I have an audio interface with me. Do I need to somehow connect an audio cable from the timeline to the audio interface here? Thx Toby

    • @TomaszGutka
      @TomaszGutka 2 роки тому

      Midi is only an impulse like a controller, think of it as a way of comunnication between devices but not the signal. It's like a remote sending orders like setting tempo or enabling preset, but in order to hear the effect you need to connect signal cables into Strymon's in and out sockets with jack cables

    The Bogner is more neutral, the Friedman projects more of that treble spike you get with the Chinese V30's, might help cut through in a mix but there bass is also quite woofy. The Friedman might come across a little more 3D at low volume in say a bedroom or guitar store but it a band setting the novelty would soon wear off, my pick still goes to the Bogner.

      I agree. There are attributes that the amp contribute, and attributes that the speaker contribute. These amps are more similar in tone than the speakers are. Most of what we are hearing is the speaker. I would most likely prefer the Friedman head with the bogner cabinet. To each their own.
