Dear vloggers -- Jack Conte shows you how to vlog better: CEO of Patreon

  • Jack Conte's video really has a lot more going on in terms of things we can learn from such as his use of sound as well. Casey Neistat, of course, does the same on a regular basis. As always, I'm enjoying making these storytelling breakdowns to figure out how to vlog better.
    SECRET CUTS
    So if you've come to here to see just what I ended up cutting from the video, I appreciate you so much. You're awesome! Anyway, cut to the chase. 1)Guitar: You'll find me running around with the guitar at about the 1 minute mark. And I was going to connect Jack Conte as a musician, with how varying shots is similar to how melodies are a sequence of variation of tones. I really digged the analogy, but ultimately decided it bogged down the video so I cut it. 2) The other one is Alfred Hitchcock on my screen at about 2:30. I had a whole explanation about what a Mcguffin is. It's a film term that is related to the whole having an item/thing drive a narrative. But again, the video worked better without it, so again it was cut. Haha, anyway, thanks again for watching the video!

    Honestly, I find that the b-roll cut scenes in Jack Conte's stuff are often far too long. I find that about halfway through them, I got really bored and I started wishing he would just tell me what's going on instead of flashing everything in front of me so quickly. I agree that there is a balance for sure but I remember specifically thinking that it was a bit too far in the Jack Conte videos that I saw. This video, however, has a great balance between talking and showing!

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому +1

      Haha, I got that same feeling in some of the subsequent videos that I saw of his. It can certainly be taken too far. Haha, audiences can only be taken on an adventure with an unknown destination so many times before they get sick of the trick I suppose. 😅

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit 6 років тому +1

      Yeah absolutely! Like I said, I think its all about finding balance. Too many talking head shots and people get bored visually... too much b-roll, they don't feel like they are getting to know you or understand what's happening. I've been trying to cut out some of my "cinematic sequences" lately to try to find my balance. I found that I was adding them just to have a cinematic sequence even when it wasn't called for. So now the goal is to only add that stuff when it actually serves a purpose. And when I'm shooting it, trying not to be random about it. In my most recent video I did a little trick where it looks like its going to be the start of one, but then it abruptly stops like 10 seconds later and catches your attention again. Just little things like that to keep it interesting. Essentially, we all have 15-second attention spans, and you need to catch someone with something (a new topic, a new angle, a new sound, a new scene) every 15 seconds in your video. This is the end of my novel. I should probably just make a video about this.

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому +1

      Haha, thanks for the novel! And I agree with you 100% and I'd even go as far as to say it's probably less than 15 seconds these days, 5 - 10?. lol I don't know, it just keeps getting shorter and shorter it seems. But then again, for those channels that can pull it off in certain niches, to mostly just sit and talk, it sure is heck way more sustainable. Which of course, is a big factor in this journey as well.

    Great breakdown on why he was so effective in that video. He demonstrates a great feature of vlogging that talking heads aren’t necessary to explain what’s happening. It definitely takes more time and organizing to create a Vlog like this but we should all strive to not be lazy and make the best work we can

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому +1

      Haha Thanks man. Yes, you’re right, laziness is always the biggest enemy isn’t it. It definitely takes a bit more planning to create something like this. But even if we just thinking about what we might show in someways could make the planning of what to shoot a little more straight forward? Although I did totally fail to include my show and tell objects in this video. 😅

    • @Ryansacrobat
      @Ryansacrobat 6 років тому

      Haha, I dont think anyone noticed until you mentioned that at the end. However, too many vloggers that oversaturate UA-cam are just walking and shooting everything and putting into a timeline with no thought of the structure, or B-roll to explain what they are talking about. But, thats the luxury of choosing what we want to watch or subscribe to right!?

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому

      Haha, you're right about that. That though is kinda the reason I'm doing this, I think the world can benefit with better storytellers. 😊 I just feel there'd be more uplifting and positive stories being heard.

    Great video man! Showing vs. telling is something I always struggle with and having been working pretty hard on getting better at. I think the "telling" clips can be useful for setting the scene and getting the story rolling but its easy to get carried away by rambling too much. Finding that balance just takes a lot of practice.

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому

      Yeah, it was definitely more difficult than I thought. Hence the failure to add in my own show and tell things in this video. I guess that was a big lesson, it has to work within the context of your story, or else it just doesn’t work as well. I think you’re right though, the ‘telling’ clips are definitely key in telling the story properly. I guess the video in someways undermines it a little, bit I guess the point is to speak to your audience in a variety of ways, to keep things fun and engaging. I think if we can master the use of showing, it’ll probably make some scenes easier to plan for. At least that’s my hope. Ahah, will keep trying until I get better at it too!

      Hahah, yes I guess it's true the way around as well. Can't have too little either. I perhaps undermined the talking head a little, but it's probably even more fundamentally important. 😉 good balance is most important.

    Yo man, always bringing it with the great info! Keep it up! Your breakdowns are super on point! Also not sure if I’m seeing it correctly but check your camera settings, feels like I’m watching 60fps. Wether it’s for 4K, that’s cool too, but try filming in 24 fps and if your camera offers that in 4K as well awesome! If not no worries. It just looks more natural in 24fps that’s all! From one creative to another! Cheers man!

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому +1

      You're right, that hasn't been something I've paid much attention to. It's just always on 60fps, in case I wanted to slow it down. But I almost never do slomo, so the point is moot. Haha. Thanks for the feedback though! Every detail matters, I'll definitely remember to go 24 as my default in my next video. Appreciate for taking the time dude!

      Vlog with King Of course man! I really enjoy your material! So bcuz my eyes see these things I can never go back lol which of course I wanna help others grow as much as they can and are willing too as well! Cool beans brother looking forward to the next breakdown! And that more “natural motion” Haha! If you don’t watch Matti Haapoja yet, definitely check him out! I’ve learned so much from Matti! Peter and Casey are cool, but Matti just seems like he’s so much more knowledgeable about cameras and settings and methodical when he shoots his videos! He’s super planned out! Maybe breakdown one of his videos? A good one of course haha!

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому

      Haha, I wish I can take credit for that, it is, fortunately, a happy accident. 😅 the weird thing I was talking about is actually me running up the stairs with a guitar around the minute mark, and a creepy Alfred Hitchcock on my computer screen around 2 min (something like that, I forget) 😆

  • @IvanZeljkovicTV

    Amazing review! God insight and lesson. Wondering why you have so little subscribers. You deserve more!
    btw. The answer to "why head shots?", is: It is much easier to shoot and edit a headshot than montages. And it works almost as well. It is extremely hard to keep up and have consistency in vlogging (which is an essence) if you put too much effort. I would say the balance is "the king" ;) e.g. Take any 10 seconds of your headshot and 10 seconds of your trip to Indonesia. It took you XX hours to film and much more time to edit... and the result comment on your vid is - good review of Jack's video. It does give you extra quality but... story "is king" and it is beautiful and by all means it is amazing to enrich it with such cool parts (montages)! ;) Balance is everything ... Balance!
    My effort as a producer is to create sustainable process and good "effort to result" balance for any content creator. This is something with which even Casey is struggling with. (Extremely shown with 368 vids!). GaryVee has a good formula to it - the teamgaryvee! But it is challenge to him also (with almost 1000 employees) to create more than one (not to mention 10 or 100) channels like GaryVee with the same audience attention. There is a code to it, and when somebody cracks this system, when this happens, vloggers will take over the advertising market. Who ever does this first will be "the king" of vloggers! And the rest will follow ;)
    Guys like you, that look things from different perspective, analyze and breakdown good stuff (like videos from Jack, David or Casey...) help other people motivated and think of the production from a new point of view!!!
    ps.
    This started as a 2 words comment, but... ;)
    ps2
    Really loved Jack's video!
    ps3
    ... and your breakdown!

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому

      Lol, thanks for the 2 word comment man. Really appreciate it. You nailed it on the head though about consistency and sustainability. That's huggge. For someone who is still struggling with consistency, I'm also trying to figure out this formula for myself. Although, I do think bigger youtubers have the luxury to coast a bit more than smaller ones. Which is why I shied away from daily vlogging. 1) I'm not good enough to pull it off in an engaging way, and 2) I'm always assuming the audience will click away the moment it is remotely less interesting. Haha tough battle...
      p.s. Thanks again for the that awesome comment!

    Great job explaining his way of doing videos... But for me, that's only 'video-rumbling' to the extrem. That,s for me, it's a 1~1:20 of actual content that is extend to a 10min video. I quit normal broadcast because of that (and because of the publicity ratio versus content)... It may be just me, eating too much youtube video but i hope that's is not the new trend. lol

    Everyone gotta stop copying Casey Neistat. He's someone that I've always looked up to. But CASEY NEISTAT teaches, don't learn from other people because you WON'T know how to develop your OWN style. Write your OWN rules, unfortunately. This dude seems nice, and Jack Conte seems cool, but he doesn't know much better. Go out, grab a camera, and try to limit yourself and create your own art. I started out doing the "casey" thing, and then I found I enjoyed working on film sets so I do that now. and direct... i kinda do a lot of things i like. Its unfortunate how everyone wants to BE "CASEY NEISTAT" but doesn't understand his philosophy properly

    • @VlogwithKing
      @VlogwithKing  6 років тому +1

      Hey man, completely agree with you that we shouldn't copy others, especially Casey. But as someone starting out, I have to respectfully, disagree with you AND casey on this point if he said we shouldn't learn from others. (Obviously he's very open about learning from Peter Mckinnon and Jake Paul) Anyway, of course, if we only learn and copy, and don't adapt what we learn into our own style, it's kinda pointless. I'm glad you have found your own style on film sets, but for the rest of us, the moment we stop learning is probably the day we'll stop growing. Anyway, definitely agree with you we should stop copying Casey, it's a journey for the student to step out of the master's shadow, albeit a very distant master. 😎
