Well Sayaka and Leon were the two characters that the game's creators made first and were the basic models for the rest. Apparently, since they were always referring back to these characters constantly, they grew tired of them and thus they became the first characters to go in the game. Sad, really, I kinda liked Sayaka.

this is really sweet. its a shame that the devs decided they wanted her dead first, she was very interesting and unexplored and had a lot of potential- they should have killed off hifumi first, man.
The fact that we know EXACTLY who was originally intended to die first and said character doesn't really do anything noteworthy throughout the rest of the game only highlights this fact even further.
