I think the greatest thing I did for my hoyas was to move them outside. I live in Houston so I can do that. They only come in if there's going to be a freeze. There on my front porch with a Northeast exposure, but they are never in the sun. They've been outside for about 2 years and some of them have grown so much that I have them on tomato cages as trellises! Not all of them of course but it's just phenomenal to me to have a plant grow one or two feet in the summer! Of course you can't walk on my front porch now but I'm okay with that! Always love your videos, Nick, but especially the ones about hoyas or philodendrons. After a lot of money spent on plants, I figured out that those are the ones I really love.
Nice! I’m in Houston as well and have mine in an E facing window (not enough room to move them outside unfortunately) and they’re also doing really well BUT I’ll keep this in mind for my next apt search - neeeeeed porch space 😅
I do not have a porch either but a large southeast window. I found out that some of them like my carnosa princess do not like the sun. Now she is sitting under a regular light and the leaves are growing larger and the Color is more vibrant. I finally realized that Hoyas are the plants I love the most. I like cat I and orchids too. Maybe because they are more manageable in small spaces
I just bought a nice size macrophylla in an 8” plastic pot at a little boutique plant place that opened this year in south jersey. It looks good, seems to be in a chunky, appropriate grow mix…and had a lot of new vines….but I noticed this week the tips of the vines are drying out. Would you think maybe it needs more water? I usually wait until the pot has that lighter feel when you pick it up, or until the soil feels mostly dry. Maybe macrophylla is a little less happy to dry out all the way? I don’t want to lose this plant!!
@@geslinam9703 for having such a large leaf their root system is really fine, instead of relying on pot weight or time, try feeling up the leaves - if they feel firm and not at all pliable, you’re good to wait a few days. If they’re starting to soften up, gift it a drink. I find that mine, in my E window that gets an hour or so of “direct” sun every morn, is kind of thirsty, much more so than I originally thought it would be. I started watering more and it took off🚀
My two additional tricks for hoyas: -I use tomato fertilizer , it has more potasium and hoyas seems to love that -Leave your hoyas at one spot, don't move them around
I remember you saying the first year they sleep the second year they creep the third year they leap. I could never understand why you said that because mine always did so good the first year. I love how much you have grown in the years. Punt intended. Thanks Nick
My first variegated Obovata Hoya died from underwatering, so now I definitely do water a bit more frequently than I used to but I also appreciate that they are more tolerant of dryness than some other houseplants. I have about 40 now. They do really well in bright rooms in our home. This year, a handful of them are flowering for the first time.
My hoya collection has grown to 20 now, and I just learned this year that you should water/treat Hoyas just like normal plants. I got the sunrise last summer, and since then, it has lost many leaves. In the spring, I decided to water it more, and now it is finally growing new leaves. So happy!
17:58 Nick you’re so right about hoyas needing more water than we’re lead to believe! Been experiencing more growth since i started keeping the soil evenly moist. Happy to hear u confirm this. Great tips as usual🙌
I’m growing all of my Hoya plants outside on a screened and covered patio. They can all see the sky but they don’t receive direct sunlight. They seem to like these conditions and have been growing since I bought them home. I’m glad you talked about watering more often. In the beginning I was following the popular wisdom of letting them completely dry out before watering, but I found out quickly that wasn’t working for me. It’s in the 80s and 90s on my patio and I don’t let them dry out because of the heat. It’s good to know that when I have to move them back inside for the 3 months of cold weather I get, I can keep them less dry than I thought.
I have 16 hoyas, I have loved them for years, my grandmother had them vined all over her east facing screened in porch. The blooms are fascinating to me. I had just found a local nursery that specialized in orchids and hoyas, then they closed to pursue other interests. Thank you for the tips.
Another tip I have learned with my Hoya over the last 8 years is moss poles and fertilizing year around. My Hoya grow year around and do much better with food year around. I mix it up with orchid mix, fish emulsion and kelp and osmacote. I also pot up bigger and doing so I have Hoya that have taken off and try to rule the house since I did so. Pubicalyx, Australis, and Obavata have just taken my greenhouse over. I have a 12x20’ greenhouse in the yard full of 88 different varieties of Hoya and over 600 plants total.
My partner blames you for my hoya collection 😅 Two things I've done to improve: Around watering, getting a moisture meter to keep an eye on them and changing the water I use from tap. And secondly, completely changing the soil from what they came in from the nursery to a repotme mix, I've been blown away at how nice the new growth looks compared to the old. I was always under the impression you should keep them in their pot for the first year. Still learning, as I've only started collecting about a year ago 😊 Ive made the mistake of buying plants I don't have the space for, but I certainly haven't learned from it lol
Mine as well, but I’ve noticed mine seem to grow the most during the late summer. Mine (obviously) bloom the most during spring. I live in Florida, so my experience might be different than others.
@@wizz4368I use a light amount of miracle grow every few months. During February I usually give them a tiny bit more than normal just to give them an extra boost to flower more. I’m not sure if my tips are correct but it hasn’t failed me.
You started my hoya small collection! I only have 2 decent South windows, so I started with small sizes with several varieties. Slow but doing great, thanks for the great info!
I have 4 hoyas now and they are growing really well. I water twice a week somewhat lightly. They are right next to a southeast window, so get a lot of light.
I have a single hoya BUT I think I'm going to get ..... a few more. I'm just starting my plant collection and I'm making my life easier by only keeping 2 types of plants. Keeping track of fewer watering schedules so its easier to manage. Thank you for making my hoya girlie life easier
OMG Nick I was watering like every two weeks and it’s been years with them and no growth. I have them in a south facing window and more water. Not lying but they have new growth THANK YOU. Two weeks more water, what a difference. My soil mix is very air rated.
These tips are things I’ve mostly figured out ( including under watering ) and it’s great to hear confirmation on my own thoughts and trials. My Hoya are waiting for warmer nights so they can go out for the summer. There they really flourish. Thanks for another great video 👍
I don't have any advice, but I wanted to share that I too, have become a big fan of hoyas. I bought a glass shelf, slapped grow lights on them, put the hoyas a couple of feet from my almost south facing window and they're growing tendrils and leaves all over the place. I have over 200 plants and still use a moisture meter before watering, no expert, just lucky.
Wow just watched your semi Hydro with Hoyas. Can not believe you use just water and then spray the leaves with Orchid spray. I'm so happy to read this.
I found my retusa needed more frequent watering so I just water the rest of my hoyas on the same day. My 4 new hoyas from Planthaven Toronto are nicely adapting to my home for about 2 weeks now. Will repot into basalt whenever I get the chance - 2024 is looking good. The rotundiflora came in spaghnum so I have to do some research on that - glazed pot for sure after this video! My best tip is not to grow kitchen hoyas above the usual electric kettle spot. My hubby kept on steaming them to death when he made his morning coffee!
Perfect timing on this vid! I just got my 1st hoya & I thought it needed less water and so I let tote dry out too much! So, I think after seeing this, I'll go sphagnum moss for a while to re-start the roots. Thanks!

Thanks for your tips, Nick. My plant collection is small compared to most on your channel, I'm sure, but I love my two Hoyas. Maybe I'll accumulate more in the near future, especially with your help.

Guilty as charged. Finding where to put a new plant. Good tips on growing Hoya. The tendrils will grab on to anything so your hoops are a good idea. Thank you for the information.
Stagnant is a word, at least it is in French and means the same ( elles stagnent ). My hoyas cuttings are growing like crazy since I've understood pretty much all the tricks you gave. But, I haven't been blessed with flowers yet. (edit) one of my cutting is growing inside of my store with only artificial lighting, still it's getting huge and lush !
Hi Nick! I really appreciate the tip on watering hoya. I was like you and thought they needed to dry out between watering. I water them every 3-4 weeks, but will start watering them more often. I'm, also, glad you said how you fertilize them. I use orchid fertilizer spray on mine, too. I'm getting ready to start fertilizing with orchid fertilizer in water, too. Do you think that will be too much fertilizer? I may do that every other time I water. Thank you so much for sharing! You're always so much fun to watch and learn from.
I love you! Instantly hooked. We are def cut from the same cloth, totally have to talk myself down from not spending $400 a time at the plant store. Sometimes my impulsivity wins. 😂😂😂

Hi Nick, great tips, thank you very much. I grow all of my Hoya with the exception of one, in Pon. They are thriving and absolutely love it. BTW, I love your shirt, the color looks so good on you!!
Come to think of it, you are right! I adopted my boss’s Hoya krimson princess that was half dead because she doesn’t have good light in her office. I repotted and watered it, but it always had wrinkled leaves and mealy bugs. I treated the mealy bugs and increased the water. Now, it has so much new growth and a long tendril tickling the leaves of the other plants. She’s kinda fresh….😉 PLEASE someone tell me how to make my Hoyas bloom!
Thanks for all of the tips Nick! I am constantly bothering the Philly plant stores asking when they are getting new hoyas in. (its usually carnosas all the way down) Any tips on where to look?
Sandyg: hi Sandy and fellow hoya lovers. I live in Western Australia and we have very hot conditions. I water about 2/3 a week in summer with a good drenching when the weather is extreme. I cut right back obviously in winter, they also don't like the cold. The fertiliser I use is orchard fertiliser with vit b. The flower just keep on coming. Every environment is different and it takes awhile to sort out what suits your plants. The PH is very critical for the plants, and would you believe not every plant of hoyas are the same. A good orchard potting mix with vermiculite or perlite works well When potting on, a pot just a tiny bit bigger, not too large. Then water them in well with Seasol plant conditioner, leaves all. I hope my very limited knowledge of these amazing plants helps you. If you buy one, you are hooked. Kind regards
I am awaiting a Krohniana black from Steve's Leaves. Can't wait-it's stuck in shipping until after Memorial Day so fingers crossed, it's OK. Sounds like I can step up watering for the summer. I do think it will make a difference. Thanks for sharing your trial and error 😊.
I totally love this video, but do you happen to have a condensed version of this video? I learned a ton from this video, but my friend was a hard time sitting still for this long. I love this video a ton! Tha ks for posting!
These are all great tips. So worried because I neglected my hoya kerrii at my greenhouse for a WHILE, and she was so rootbound and half of her was dead 😭 ... so i cut the dead off and repotted but had no bark or spag or leca (one of my faves) so I resorted to cactus soil. However, I figured it would be warmer where I am and sunnier, so I basically drenched her because she was so parched. Three days lated the soil is STILL damp! I'm so worried but I have no clue what to do. Ever done this? I'm afraid to keep disturbing the roots but I don't want root rot either!
Thanks for this video , I’m very new to Hoya but I can see it’s a very slippery slope ! I’m considering moving a Hoya Bella cutting I accidentally took to one of my greenhouses outside this summer, I’ve got some nice semi shady spots under the benches and I’m thinking semi hydro might be a good idea because it’s HOT in there at the moment. Do you think that would be ok?
#1 tip is sulfur treatments! Educate yourself about Hoya mites - and treat with sulfur! SO many of my Hoyas that haven’t grown at all are pushing out new growth, and blooming after treating with Hoya. #2 is ensuring the soil mix is proper for your climate. I order from florida and the mix they come in doesn’t dry out quickly enough for my area, I need something that dries out quicker and drains quickly as well!
Thinner leaf Hoyas need watered more often than thicker leaves. When I got into plants 3 years ago no one ever really addressed that. Or went into enough details about it. Everyone said to water them like succulents. Once I figured it out mine all grow a lot faster. I don’t even water my succulents and cacti like everyone says and they growing twice as fast as everyone else’s.
Hi Nick. I always find your videos on plants really helpful. I've just discovered what you said about watering. My Hoya Krohniana Eskimo, so I forgot to water it for a while and so I discovered the leaves were limp and soft, some even wrinkly.😱 I was shocked, so I immediately watered it. This was three days ago, but I expected the leaves to become less soft and more firm now that I watered it. But they're still soft. How long does it take for the leaves to become firm again? I hope she will perk up again.
Hoyas roots get damaged by overwatering (root rot) but the roots can get damaged from underwatering as well and I speak from experience. If the pot is heavy from being watered and the leaves are still limp, there is a chance that the roots are affected. One of the reasons may be because you let it dry too long and the plant is receiving a lot of light the roots dried up. Now you should look under the hood and assess the damage. If the roots look healthy and no foul smell, let the root ball out to dry faster then keep it moist (not wet until it recovers. If you do not have time for all this, propagating is your best bet
I only have a few hoyas. The krimson queen and princess, the shepherdii, the pubicalyx, and Kerri. The Kerri is all died. My shepherdii I got was blooming

They’re so good for apartments because they’re so slow growing and manageable. Even when they get big they’re manageable. Perfect for the generation who will never be able to buy homes. I have 15 Hoya and I plan to die with them unlike my monstera deliciosas.

A good orchard potting mix with vermiculite or perlite works well
When potting on, a pot just a tiny bit bigger, not too large.
Thanks for info! I’ve been really into Hoyas this year. I think I probably underwater!
I did, and lost a few, until I came across a reddit post entitled "Water. Your. Hoyas." That changed everything!
This is perfect for me! I'm thinking I would like to experiment with a hoya! 🙂
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely collection beautiful
I totally love this video, but do you happen to have a condensed version of this video? I learned a ton from this video, but my friend was a hard time sitting still for this long.
I love this video a ton! Tha ks for posting!
New here🪴🪴🪴Love you ❤ love your channel. SO helpful and informative! Will def be back for more of your honest work with Hoya. 🌿🍹🌿
Great video…lots of helpful info!
This is wonderful! Thanks for the video
Wow! I'm doing all of your mistakes except the natural light. Thanks for the video! 😮
Lovely Hoyas,and top.
💚🌱☘️🌵💚
Thanks for this video , I’m very new to Hoya but I can see it’s a very slippery slope !
I’m considering moving a Hoya Bella cutting I accidentally took to one of my greenhouses outside this summer, I’ve got some nice semi shady spots under the benches and I’m thinking semi hydro might be a good idea because it’s HOT in there at the moment.
Do you think that would be ok?
Hi Nick. I am new to uour channel, loving your enthusiasm for all plants, specially hoyas❤. How many plants do you have? 😊
Hi just love your video but would appreciate if you would name what kind of plant your talking about.
Yes, stagnate is a word!
Thanks for your suggestions 😊
Thanks for the information. I was doing the same thing you was doing.
I used to believe the myth that they are low feeders, which lead to very little growth until I started fertilizing weak weekly.
What a coinkydinky! I just bought some hoyas yesterday
Nick have you ever co sidereal putting a hoya on some sort of moss pole? Just curious if it would work. I may try it someday---sooner than later
@@rhodealexandre6583 Thanks. The plant survived, it looks great now. I did take some cuttings too, to make the mother plant fuller and it is now.
hoyas = a lot of light and water
Love your Hoyas and your video
You are really good at doing these videos. You have charisma
Very timely video
I only have a few hoyas. The krimson queen and princess, the shepherdii, the pubicalyx, and Kerri. The Kerri is all died. My shepherdii I got was blooming
It's been awhile! I actually have the Macrophylla!!

Hi Nick I was wanting a Hoya video I just got a Krinkle 8 and Have a Sigillatis coming from Steve Leafs soon.but I'm having trouble with my Princess I have put two 4in pots together and it's been about three months its stagnating not even a runner. Any suggestions will be appreciated ❤😊
Hello! Great information!
The word is stagnant but yes it’s a word. I adore your personality! You’re so real & adorable!!!! Thanks for the great videos!
Natural lght and its direction, airy mediums and proper waterings
oh wow......I just accepted and assumed that Hoyas were slow growing.....problem solved, note to self, water more!! Thx
They’re so good for apartments because they’re so slow growing and manageable. Even when they get big they’re manageable. Perfect for the generation who will never be able to buy homes. I have 15 Hoya and I plan to die with them unlike my monstera deliciosas.
Hoya. I think I need an intervention 😂
No way! Buy more!! 🤣😋😊
@@jaclynns.jungle Haha, I did. They arrived yesterday. I desperately need a cabinet because I am at full capacity ovah here
@@angela86753 it definitely helps to have somewhere to put them all haha
Hi Nick! Are you still enjoying your cocktails? Xxx
Thank you for the help 😊
