I'm so tired of getting scammed by these people on etsy, it's mind boggling what they charge for unrooted cuttings of plants that grow like weeds. let's agree to stop paying these insane prices!! if nobody buys these plants for the prices they are asking for, they will have no choice but to decrease their prices. hold out and you will see, you'll get your hands on your wishlist plants in due time! patience, my friends
Yeah after seeing some prices at the local green house Im swearing off Etsy. Im not dealing with the absurd prices for a 12USD plant at the local shop.
I agree that some people charge ridiculous price for plants/cuttings on Etsy. However, we should not forget that Etsy is for small seller who do not have the purchase power that big store have ( they can't buy 100 plants in bulk at a lower cost therefore, selling it lower).
I agree with all of these comments. I think the ones that irritate me the most are the ones that offer a rooted cutting for $3 and charge $45 for shipping. Next day with special handling isn't half that much for something that small.
Sounds fun, but can you really do that? Let‘s take 2010-2020 for example, which plant do you choose, on what factors do you rely your decision. Social media make all of it a lot harder. With that said, I would watch the video anyway! 😄
I love that you show “imperfect” plants that are more real life for many of us. Not everything looks Instagram perfect and it shouldn’t have to! Please continue to show us some plants that don’t look so perfect and explain why things happen just like you did in this video. That’s very helpful!
Honestly if you can, safely, go shopping around at smaller local plant stores, not Boutique shops, these plants do still pop up at reasonable prices. Plant shopping is like thrift shopping for me. You got to look around to find the bargains!
Houseplant trends over the past decades is such a fascinating topic, looking at both the history and the psychology. (I think we all have days when we can totally identify with that poor exhausted 'Micans.' Hugs to it.)
@@blaertes4976 I am a farmer’s daughter and I married a farmer. The reason farmers don’t always plant the same thing is #1 different crops take different nutrients out of the soil so they rotate what they plant. Example corn drains the soil because corn is a heavy feeder so to replace some of what is taken out they will sometime plant soy beans where the corn was planted the previous year, legumes add back to the soil. #2 large farmers watch stock market trends and will speculate what will bring in the most money. Just my thoughts: growers want the most bang for their buck, why not drive a trend. Grow something in small quantities see how it goes, when people really like what they’re growing, limit quantities drive the price up and then when the price is where they like it start flooding the market with a plant then start all over again with something new and different. Supply and demand. I’m not trying to be rude and hateful, but I’ve lived quite a few years and have seen it happen many times. Look at gas prices, their all over the place. My husband at one point in his life worked for a natural gas company. They have years and years worth of natural gas buried in the ground in large storage containers, they can regulate the price they want for it, of course the government also has a say in it, price gouging, but for the most part if someone has what people want they’re going to get the most money they can for it. Work smarter not harder. If you’ve read this thank you for listening to me babble. Everyone has their own opinion, this is mine💚🙃
I got a wayetii at Lowe’s in October. Well my husband did. He goes early in the morning to pick up stuff for work and thought it was up my alley. They are still showing up but it’s rare. There was 2 more when he left but gone the next day.
I love my variegated wayetii- I got as a lil starter from a local nursery and it’s been fun and pleasing to watch grow. I’ve seen another local nursery with them as well- I think I’ve mostly just seen the variegated. And I love my compacta! That was actually among the first few houseplants I picked up, and it did nothing for months. At some point a few months in it woke up and it’s been pretty consistently growing- it filled out the existing “ropes” it had started, one rope has about doubled in length, and it’s put out 3 new beginner ropes on its own, as well as random foliage from just lil growth points around the plant, within the first year. (It’s been sitting in a windowsill over summer in FL) It’s so fun to watch grow and seeing the weird ways the leaves twist and fold and tuck themselves into each other- there can be a ton of space where they could have grown “normally” or there can be NO space and ya know they’ll twist themselves up and figure it out. 💚
Thank you so much for clearing something up for me! I feel like such a dope. I deleted the Scindapsus pictus exotica off my wishlist because I couldn’t see much of a difference between the pictures of it and my Scindapsus pictus silver satin. Now that I learned from you that the leaves are larger on the exotica, back on the list it goes, that’s beautiful. Again, thanks a million, Nick. I enjoy your videos and I always learn from you. (PS. Your sweater is beautiful.)
The problem is people going and buying the entire stock from stores and then selling the plant for 3x the price. Supply and demand. Personally I find most of the "popular" plants boring, you can still get them at cheap prices you just have to get there first
Just saw a post from my favorite plant shop near Nashville, TN, and they're setting out fully rooted Micans tomorrow in 2.5" pots for $4.99. From the photo they shared, there will be 15-20 and they look very healthy. I won't make it there in time to get one but it gives me hope for a future purchase at a reasonable price!
The Hoya Wyettii is on my wish list. You are right, every time I go to the nurseries I look for it (or the Hoya Linearis), but never in sight. I'm a plant enthusiast for decades, with renewed interest lately. Who has heard of a Creeping Charlie, Grape Ivy or Ficus Benjamina lately? Those were popular many years ago. like in the 80's on .. never see them or hear about them now.
I've been wanting a micans for some time but for the past couple months I've only seen them in hanging baskets for $30+. Thankfully most recently, I'm seeing them for $2.50-$8 for smaller pots so of course I bought one :)
I agree with Scindapsus Exotica. I frequent a lot of plant shops and sadly have never seen one in real person at any of them. I’ve only been able to get one through local trades. Another plant that I think used to be really easy to find but now is much harder is Cebu Blue Pothos. So glad I was able to find one a few years ago! 😅
More ridiculous than the prices today for common and easily propagated plants like H. Compacta and velvet leaf Philodendron are the people who pay them, contributing to the ongoing escalation. I can understand rare aroid prices but not manufactured scarcity. I worked in the retail houseplant business for a popular Denver garden center back in 2000-2002 and we couldn't even sell a monstera back then - nobody wanted them - a 36" totem of Philodendron bipennifolium in a 10" pot was $45 and we were the *expensive* place in town - ZZ's were called Zami Zami plants - there were only two kinds of pothos - Scindapsus pictus was Philodendron silver, syngoniums were nephthytis, and pothos was Scindapsus - maidenhair ferns were the calatheas of the time and dendrobiums were hottest selling orchid we couldn't keep in stock. I could go on and on. Certainly, things have changed and the world of houseplants is better than ever, but for the prices and the poaching. Great video, Nick. You're a star! Keep 'em coming.
@@ayo1127 Welcome! Echters. If you want to take a 30 min drive up to Longmont, the Flower Bin is fantastic. If you’re into orchids, Fantasy orchids is awesome too.
@@ayo1127 Welcome! Right now my favorite place to buy plants is Southwest Gardens because they're a store for houseplant lovers (as opposed to garden centers more focused on outdoor gardening). City Floral, Echters, O'Tooles, and Nick's are larger garden centers which have varying selections of houseplants throughout the year. There's the Herbery, The Plant Room, the Plant Garage which are smaller stores. The local big box stores are often places to find great deals from Costa Farms or other large growers. There are several others you'll find around town, but the ones I listed are my favorites. I also have to mention Little Eden; they're a new-ish plant seller, having previously been plant stagers, but throughout 2020 they offered tons of rare plants that others weren't selling. Enjoy your shopping and I hope you love Denver!
Yes! In 2019, I saw a huge hanging basket of wayetii at a Lowe's. I didn't buy it and I have regretted it ever since. I know that Costa Farms sort of rotates their larger hoyas so I am sure it will come back around at some point. In 2020, I was able to get large hindu rope and curtisii. In addition to the Krimson Princess, I have seen quite a few people finding large Chelseas right now. So maybe wayetii will be back soon.
My local greenhouse had three inch pots of philodendron micans for only 3 dollars. I don’t believe they know if things are uncommon or not they just get stuff in randomly. But sellers go in & wipe all of them out & gouge them so nobody can get their hands on them & it’s sad.
This is really interesting coming from the UK! Just over a year ago you never saw a moonshine, and now they're everywhere - every good houseplant shop, every website... It's the same with the tetrasperma, nowhere to be seen and now everywhere. Maybe the UK is a little more behind than the US... Also I barely ever see hoyas! Most of the hoyas I have are cuttings from Etsy, but I would love to see more variety over here. And yes, the large leaf scindapsis are much harder to come by, although not impossible, while you'll find the smaller leaf varieties in every. single. shop. I hadn't realised that until I watched this! Really interesting video :)
When you live in an area so behind in plant trends that none of these plants have even arrived to plant stores let alone been easy to find and then become rare.
Just saw this morning, in my area, some people were able to buy the Exotica in 8in pots at Randall's (supermarket) for $16 dollars. They looked beautiful too.
I have been seeing alot of people showing scindapus Exotica lately and the other ones. I bought mind last yr from a Esty shop one strand for $ 7.99 but I love it and growing beautiful big leaves.
I came across a single wayetii not long ago in a local nursery and I paid $25 for a 4” pot (labeled as a Hoya species, took me forever to figure out that he’s a wayetii!) and I’m so glad I snagged him because it’s so true, his texture is amazing and he’s just a great plant! So glad you mentioned him!
Love this video. I purchased a micans from Trader Joe’s for $7 in a ceramic pot a few years ago. I’m having problems finding a watermelon peperomia. They used to be everywhere. Thanks for the great information.
I got crazy lucky and found a 8in basket of Hoya weyetii at my local lowes. Its growing beautifully and I'm so happy I got it because it us that hard to find anymore.
I got my variegated Hoya Wyettii for $10 at a local city store! Such a steal. I've had him for over a year now and he's grown like mad, but I haven't' seen another variegated one in stores since, and I haven't seen the regular version more than a couple of times.
I finally found a micans at a independent plant store yesterday!! It was $40 but I didn’t hesitate. I’ve been in love with it for a year and unable to find it (I’m in Australia Idk how different the market is)
I bought my veitchii in the early spring of 2019. FULL 6in pot (3 plants in one) for $55 with leaves about 5-6in long. It has literally been the easiest plant I've owned and it's latest leaves measured 17in long and has been repotted in a 10in pot. Now, a 6in pot with a 3 leaf plant will fetch $200. It's crazy how things have shifted in just 2 yrs.
Dude my local plant shops are selling almost all the plants in the video in wimpy 4-6 inch pots for $75-125. Plus a little pilea peperomioides pup for $60! I do trades for them instead but I feel bad for beginners who will just go to these shops and not know the prices are insane.
I bought a small 3” mican last yr on Etsy for $18. It grew then died back. That plant likes more water. I bought another one to see if I can do better at my local nursery in Texas for 12$ in a 3” pot. So far it has been doing good. If I kill it again I will buy no more.
Very interesting to see the Hindu Rope on this list. Collection Hoyas are essentially impossible to find at the moment in Western Australia, thanks to c*vid closing down the nursery in the Eastern states - but when we do get a rare restock, Hindu Ropes are always the last to go.
The Philodendron Micans drives me crazy. I remember seeing them on the shelves of my local garden store and being like, "Eh, I'll come back for them later." Then starting in August, they just disappeared.
Thanks- I like this content and I agree with you and the prices of all plants are outrageous now. Yikes! I'll be doing lots of trading this summer and also will buy cheaper less popular plants.
I got my hoya years ago from costa farms at Lowe’s. And it’s not dead because I learned the taco trick from you!😂 They seem to have disappeared from the market in my area too!
I wish I live in your area! I just bought the other day from a lady online for $55cad with 15pcs of leaves( yes I counted!lol) I’m jealous! Im from Toronto
I just got a(nother) Hoya compacta and it is obscene that the price is, obscene. I was inspired by you to get the Schindapsus Exotica and I haven't seen it since either!
Hi Nick! I don't get out much at all, but just purchased, I think, a Flaming Red Flamingo Anthurium at Walmart for $9.97. When I googled Anthurium, this looked really close on the color, more burgundy then red, which is the color I liked the best. I hope I can keep it alive. I've never had one before. I'd love to find a Scindapsus Pictus "Exotica" and Sansevieria trifasciata "Moonshine". I've never seen a Sansevieria that color before. Is is because of lack of light? Just curious because I love that color green. Thank you so much for sharing another fun video!
Gotta day that curly leaf Hoya is readily available near me at a reasonable price. I think plant availability, like everything else, was affected by the pandemic and I’m hoping soon we’ll see more variety return. As for my local nursery they’ve been getting more and more each day. So keep up hopes!
BTW - your king anthurium has an NSE tropical tag in it which makes sense because that’s where I got mine which is pretty much the same size. You said Pistils (which by the way is my favorite online plant seller), but I’ve never seen them have one of these.
I found a 6 inch micans last summer for $4.99 👀. It’s crazy that they’re so difficult to find and that they can be so pricy when they such an easy and prolific grower.
Hi good video. The Hoya splash I have, looks similar to the narrow leaf Hoya you displayed. I got a cutting from work, grows like a weed. I'm not into the "fad" plants I have older varieties and I'm sure one day they will make a come back. I guess my Slash is only one that was a "fad" plant. Thanks 😊
I knew about micans when I got into plants a few years ago and didn't get one and now I can't find them ugh. I have a lovely exotica that I got for a good price luckily
Variegated string of hearts! Used to be able to get a full 4 inch pot for $10 or less. I remember the first time I saw a 2in pot of it for $25 my jaw dropped. People snatched it up so quickly last year!! Now it's much more difficult to find and prices are ridiculous.
Scindapsus Exotica is certaintly an easy and hardy plant. Though to where I lived in, they are readily available and inexpensive. Silvery ann scindapsus is pretty expensive here so exotica is my go to.
Hi Nick , I have purchased a Hoya that’s beautifully variegated with long leaves more so leopard like 🥰🙌 but no name tag thinking it maybe a wayetti ?? In variegated form … thanks for your video great stuff love it 👌🧤👒🐨🦘🇦🇺❣️
Please cut the mican, propagate again and when you plant them when new roots grow, fertilize her once a month with epsom salt- (1/2 gallon of water + 1/2 tsp of epsom salt ) Will boost her growth and more buds
Awhile back I listened to a podcast by Trader Joe’s and the head flower lady was a guest. She said that with respect to flowers it has been difficult because former flower growers have converted to growing cannabis. Maybe the same thing is happening to houseplants?
I think plants are like pets since Covid, support high demand and super overpriced. Seeing mutts listed online for nearly 3k when they should've been next to free (normally) was a shock, plants seem the same, stores don't have them, when they do the prices are very high and the plant isn't even great quality. This year where I buy pants I did not see oncidium orchids, any citrus, not Christmas cactus, no color variations of poinsettia and only small red, no african violets, no aloe, no elephant palm, very few succulents... Basically things that are almost always available are not around and they're not being replaced either leaving plant shelves empty. I have a feeling once the world opens up and shipping becomes easier we will see plants with a drop in price as demand goes down. Just like shelters are starting to fill with covid dogs 😭
Maybe they're more available now but was at a Home Depot near me and there were at least 10 in something like a 6" hanging basket for $17. I wanted one because I don't have any Hoyas but was scared I'd end up killing it.
Here in Australia you can't get anything in a full hanging basket. You pay a lot for a pothos or hoya with 5 leaves and it's up to you to grow it on and propagate the plant to fill up the basket.
Mathilda, yes we do, and cheaply. I have many mammoth hoyas that I wouldn't want to chop up for profit. I will do cuttings for friends if they want some. I don't pay for many plants, never have, but have a huge collection.

I think the growers hold back to drive the prices up💚🙃

It’s probably something like that or changing stock as trends change. Like farmers don’t grow the same crop year after year.

Love this video. I purchased a micans from Trader Joe’s for $7 in a ceramic pot a few years ago. I’m having problems finding a watermelon peperomia. They used to be everywhere. Thanks for the great information.
I just got a watermelon peperomia from Lowe's yesterday!
they have them at a ton of grocery stores now because of costa farms! (i live in southeast US)
Lucky you🤗. I have never seen those plants on my big box store until now🤪.
the hoya wayetii is one of my faves. literally stunning especially when sunstressed
I got crazy lucky and found a 8in basket of Hoya weyetii at my local lowes. Its growing beautifully and I'm so happy I got it because it us that hard to find anymore.
This was a super interesting video. I found a 2 node micans CUTTING for $30 the other day. It really has been blown out of proportion
Amazing video!! I love you!!
i was so surprised to see a bunch of moonshine in 4in pots at my local home depot in small town oklahoma last week, so i snagged a couple.
Funny, I sold a beautiful full philodendron Milan back in 2018 for $12 CAD. I also sold pink princesses for $16. I wish I had them now 🤪😂
You practically just gave them away We’ve pretty much all done that and then regret it later
That was always cheap for PP
I ended up getting my Exotica by asking my eye doctors receptionist if I could have some cuttings from the one in their office.
I got my variegated Hoya Wyettii for $10 at a local city store! Such a steal. I've had him for over a year now and he's grown like mad, but I haven't' seen another variegated one in stores since, and I haven't seen the regular version more than a couple of times.
I live in Germany and I've literally NEVER seen a Hoya Carnosa Compacta in real life ㅠ.ㅠ
Really? Bauhaus has them sometimes.
@@lamer4289 yeah :") good to know though! Thank uu
Ich habe sie auch bei Dehner gesehen glaube ich. Aber da ist die Auswahl je nach Standort auch unterschiedlich
I found an 8in hanging basket of Wayetii for $13 in my local grocery store back in November. Big, full Hoya for practically pennies=good day 😁
I finally found a micans at a independent plant store yesterday!!
Start selling! 🤣🤣
Dude my local plant shops are selling almost all the plants in the video in wimpy 4-6 inch pots for $75-125. Plus a little pilea peperomioides pup for $60! I do trades for them instead but I feel bad for beginners who will just go to these shops and not know the prices are insane.
Your Moonshine is so bright compared to mine. It's so pretty!
I bought a small 3” mican last yr on Etsy for $18. It grew then died back. That plant likes more water. I bought another one to see if I can do better at my local nursery in Texas for 12$ in a 3” pot. So far it has been doing good. If I kill it again I will buy no more.
Love the moonshine!
Very interesting to see the Hindu Rope on this list. Collection Hoyas are essentially impossible to find at the moment in Western Australia, thanks to c*vid closing down the nursery in the Eastern states - but when we do get a rare restock, Hindu Ropes are always the last to go.
Nick, I am begging you, please do a “houseplant care routine” “day in the life caring for plants” or something PLS
I have never seen a moonshine sansevaria that was bright green!
That’s cuz most people grow it in higher light, his really needs more light
The Philodendron Micans drives me crazy. I remember seeing them on the shelves of my local garden store and being like, "Eh, I'll come back for them later." Then starting in August, they just disappeared.
Thanks- I like this content and I agree with you and the prices of all plants are outrageous now. Yikes! I'll be doing lots of trading this summer and also will buy cheaper less popular plants.
I got my hoya years ago from costa farms at Lowe’s. And it’s not dead because I learned the taco trick from you!😂 They seem to have disappeared from the market in my area too!
I snagged a $16, 8 inch pot of wayetii from Lowe’s about a month ago! I was so excited! I’m in north Georgia
Ahhh I’ve been looking for Micans!!
I was able to find a couple of cuttings of SP Exotica at the end of summer though.
Love your Wayetii❤🌱❤🌱
Gotta day that curly leaf Hoya is readily available near me at a reasonable price. I think plant availability, like everything else, was affected by the pandemic and I’m hoping soon we’ll see more variety return. As for my local nursery they’ve been getting more and more each day. So keep up hopes!
Interesting topic 👏👏👏
BTW - your king anthurium has an NSE tropical tag in it which makes sense because that’s where I got mine which is pretty much the same size. You said Pistils (which by the way is my favorite online plant seller), but I’ve never seen them have one of these.
I found a 6 inch micans last summer for $4.99 👀. It’s crazy that they’re so difficult to find and that they can be so pricy when they such an easy and prolific grower.
We still get exotica in our big box stores for $17. Moonshine in our grocery stores over Christmas for cheap too.
Thanks 😊
If I saw an exotica I would definitely pick it up. I have never seen one in person where I live, at a nursery nor big box store 😕
New subscriber here. Love your vibe.
Micans needs some propagating, lol😄❤🍃🌱🍃
Damn u got right into it 👏
Scindapsus Exotica is certaintly an easy and hardy plant. Though to where I lived in, they are readily available and inexpensive.
Silvery ann scindapsus is pretty expensive here so exotica is my go to.
I didn’t even know that those Hoyas were gone I got a large pot for free from Lowe’s around 2018🤎🌿
Hi Nick , I have purchased a Hoya that’s beautifully variegated with long leaves more so leopard like 🥰🙌 but no name tag thinking it maybe a wayetti ?? In variegated form … thanks for your video great stuff love it 👌🧤👒🐨🦘🇦🇺❣️
Never been this early to a video! :D
Compacta is still at Home Depot all the time where I am in Canada for $3.98 for 4” pots 😳
Please cut the mican, propagate again and when you plant them when new roots grow, fertilize her once a month with epsom salt- (1/2 gallon of water + 1/2 tsp of epsom salt )
Will boost her growth and more buds
I’ve seen Philodendron Pink Princess at our local Home Depot here in Vancouver around 2017-2018 for only $8.99 for ones in 3.5” or 4” pot
Wow. Now the prices are Beyond ridiculous
I live in Australia and that moonshine is screaming for light 😭😭😭
Yes I am... Looking for the micans and they are so expensive for a fuzzy pothos basically lol
Huh, after your comments I’ll pamper my S. Moonshine. Your poor Micans is just sad Nick✌️❤️. Mine is thriving in Leca
I can't seem to get a decently priced mican anywhere. Etsy prices for a small rooted micans is insane
Ask your local Facebook plant group if anyone is selling one
I got mine from Hirts for less than $10 a year ago. I love Hirts
I just bought a Hoya wayetii variegated. It’s beautiful. It was $20.
i've yet to see a micans at a big box store lol but i havent checked my local tropical plant store. it's a little pricey but not sky high
Awhile back I listened to a podcast by Trader Joe’s and the head flower lady was a guest. She said that with respect to flowers it has been difficult because former flower growers have converted to growing cannabis. Maybe the same thing is happening to houseplants?
I never thought of that but its probably true !!
I could really relate with calathea eg🙈
Nice information! New subscriber from India. Thanks from #GreenIsland
You did it again.....said 'Costed' at 13.36! 😉😆
Just like shelters are starting to fill with covid dogs 😭
i love my anthurium!
Maybe they're more available now but was at a Home Depot near me and there were at least 10 in something like a 6" hanging basket for $17. I wanted one because I don't have any Hoyas but was scared I'd end up killing it.
Cebu blue! I have been looking for about a year and a half! No luck. I guess if I want one I will have to go the Etsy route.
Ask your local Facebook plant group
Here in Australia you can't get anything in a full hanging basket. You pay a lot for a pothos or hoya with 5 leaves and it's up to you to grow it on and propagate the plant to fill up the basket.
Shouldn't you guys get really big hoya australis? 😀
Mathilda, yes we do, and cheaply. I have many mammoth hoyas that I wouldn't want to chop up for profit. I will do cuttings for friends if they want some. I don't pay for many plants, never have, but have a huge collection.
Well Yano, where do you look as I haven't found this at all.
