The Chris Gaines album was great! Produced by Tommy Simms. Wish I knew where my CD copy was.

And they were worried about Napster and trying to make us feel guilty for "stealing from the artists". The companies needed to make back their stupid million dollar expenses. And now you can make a full album in your bedroom recording studio for free or under a thousand dollars if you need to hire vocalists.

The record companies were definitely sleep walking into the file sharing era but I think the biggest con was the price of CD’s. Cheaper to make and distribute than vinyl but we’re more expensive!

@@mixingmasteringonline Yeah, I remember that when they became popular I was so tempted (and did pay) for the ridiculous high price CDs and had to get more until I was broke.

A large part of the Tusk bill went to coke too. Can’t forget that part.

Of course, I bet that was actually a huge percentage of the costs!

Haha accounting line item: 'Fade Out Specialist, $50k/month' There's this legend I'd forgotten til just now, when I was interning in the late 80s some established engineers/producers explained to me that it wasn't uncommon for $$$ budget albums to code-word the drugs budget as a retainer cost for an imaginary 'fade-out specialist engineer' haha

Forgive me if they're mentioned here, I've not watched the entire thing yet, but I wonder where/if the last 2 legendary Talk Talk records fit on the list of, say, 25 most expensive ever made? Gotta be top 50 for sure. If you only know 'Its My Life' you will be absolutely shocked, they are *anything* but synth pop! Too much to cover here but OMG if you're into recording lore, do a search for like 'making of Spirit of Eden' and 'making of Laughingstock' and hang your head in wonder haha. Phill Brown the engineer was the best source for info, his bio is called 'Are We Rolling? Essential for all recording peeps!

Certainly hadn't realised that there were albums that went into 7- or 8-figure sums

@@mixingmasteringonline Kind of, but Michael Jackson and that level of recording artists would get a big investment from the Record Company, wanting to show their Top Artists in the most favorable light. That was also part of the marketing, it was NEWS because it cost 1M, they were probably at $874, 867 and had a meeting,
"OK people we need to spent 130K, who needs a new car....Just pick up lunch one day and we can write it off as a expense"
"My sisters daughter need surgery they can't afford..."
"Can't see how we can write that off, wish her well, pass the Coke".
That Video that cost a Million, we can do it now on a phone because they did all the heavy lifting back then with almost "analogue gear". That was a investment into the future of those Video Corps.
A lot of the indulgences like a indulgence consumption room, and a room that looks like a sun set should have been nixed (pun intended) by the Band themselves. I don't care how wasted and absent of reality you are, spending 100G's to build a room to record a album has nothing to do with Music or Art. She is the sexiest witch/crazy_lady of them all though and was going places even on her own as the 80's would prove so I guess no one wanted to be the Adult.
      Good Video. 🍁

That Hysteria Album, it was had a strange impact, we were all waiting for a follow up to Pyromania and the Drummers accident delayed that. When it came out it was not a follow up to Pyromania, but enough time had passed and synth pop had established itself as kind of Rock n Roll, compared to the Cars and Robert Palmer Huey Lewis and that John Mellencamp singer songwriter group it was still a Hard Rock Album that could be played on the radio, and it was........
Most of the expense was for the time taken to record it, I heard because of the time they had they were recording Guitar parts one note at a time and splicing them into the song. Same with Chords, stacking single notes to build what sounds like a strummed chord. Amazingly they pulled it off live, with that album cover as a backdrop, I still have Flash Blindness to that stage and the feeling of Vertigo with the steep Seats at the Arena, lazers made it feel like the stage was right below you not in front. A big tour and the only show I (we) ever bought scalped tickets for, (too see Queensryche who were opening with Operation MindCrime, and we got in the building just in time to hear Geoff say "Good Night").
Axel, amazing, lucked out and then just showed the World he just "lucked out' for a few decades'. And he does not even have a Good Voice, it worked on Appetite because of the Lyrics and Slashes' Guitar.... The worst Punkers never had his discipline problems or hissy fits. They always finished a show (if a fight or the Cops did not end it), and respected their fans and honoured their tickets.

Jackson’s look, from Thriller to Bad, broke my heart. Became a weirdo after the surgeries.
