Appetite was lightning in a bottle, the lifestyle of down and out LA combined with punk, hard rock, and a great sense of melody, played by passionate musicians.
The blues man….Don’t forget about the blues. That’s what separated them.
@@joshuasmith83 ahh yes, the blues, you're absolutely right
Well said y’all. I was pretty young back then, but the impact they actually had on music back then is hard to imagine unless you were there and actually witnessed it to some degree. I don’t see a band having that kind of impact ever again. When you hear “they were the biggest band in the world”, it was no joke. All of a sudden, all the Hollywood bands start copying their look, MTV started playing their videos like countless times each day, Hollywood movies were using their music for their soundtracks, despite controversy in the media they started playing with other incredibly huge artists, the list goes on. And you can argue they sold out with the UYI albums, but I got the feeling they never lost that sense of exactly who they were…well, Axl may have changed a bit, but the rest were very much what you see is what you get kind of people, and none of them certainly ever apologized for it. They did things their way and that is why I love them!
Izzy and steven fucking ruled. So important to that album.
@@danzigmcnaniel5226 don't forget duff, duff or steven mentioned that they practiced their rhythm section skills by listening to Prince's 1999.
It is one of the greatest rock and roll albums ever recorded.
Lmao, absolutely not. Way too many bad tracks to even be in the top 100.... And not even the best gnr album, three good songs then a bunch of hateful trash like my Michelle.
@@trevorD1156 absolutely agree
@@trevorD1156 Lmao which gnr album is better??? Chinese democracy?!??
@@trevorD1156there’s about 30 million people that disagree with ya bud
@@trevorD1156Found the swiftie among us...
Motley Crue never put out an album that came even remotely close to replicating the success of Appetite. Still to this day, the best-selling debut album in the US and best GNR album
Best selling debut album is Hybrid Theory by Linking Park.
@@serginhosena Stinkin Park doesn't compare to Appetite LMAO
What about Dr. Feelgood???
@@serginhosenano Slipknot self titled. Their major label debut.
Great album. They were never the same after they lost Steven (their heart) and Izzy (their soul)
Steven = Swing Izzy = Swagger and correct never the same
Izzy was certainly the songwriter!!
After him the songs don’t have the typical blues influence he brought to the band.
Not even Slash’s songs have it 🎉
I’m not talking about the actual performances, but, UYI just doesn’t SOUND right by comparison.
I’ve always felt the main culprit is Slash and Stradlin both reportedly abandoning their Gibsons for the recordings. And, Bill Price at the mixing console was definitely hit-and-miss, too.
I can’t believe that they plan to work on the next album without Steven and Izzy
@@martincloutier666 why would they include 2 guys who haven’t been around since the “reunion”?
It’s a real pleasure to see a video like this. Not one of these AI generated ones
Thank you! Great to hear that it’s appreciated 😃
There must have been a genie, wizard or witch but something happened on that album that has hypnotized its fans ever since. Love is understatement.
Steven can't help smiling in most of the pictures. 😊
I had this album not one month after its release. Took another year or more to take off. It kinda was a defining moment in the 1980's with this album, and plenty of good times.
probably my favorite album ever
Appetite is objectively the best Rock album ever recorded. Even if GnR is not your favorite band, it's still better. No other piece has so completely represented what Rock n Roll is all about.
Almost, sits behind oasis definitely maybe, these two albums are pure rock n roll, wether you like oasis or guns, these are two of best rock n roll debuts
They were a one-album band for me, but what an album!
They shouldn’t have overproduced don’t cry. The 1987 version is so much better
For me GNR lies is a great album combining Live Like a suicide. I didn't mind songs on the Illusions but it wasn't the same. Axl had a vision for guns vs where the band should have gone.
@@locks69 It's crazy that Don't Cry was written in 1985... I didn't mind Don't Cry in Illusions... November Rain is a killer more...
Illusion 1 and 2 has some great songs, but so much filler should have been one album. Lies has one of my favorite gnr songs one in a million
Love this classic album. One of the best of all time
So expertly done that, DUff's bass and Adler's bass drum cut through the solo'd narration track. It is a masterpiece album.
i was 13 in 1988,when i heard sweet child on the radio i remember getting a feeling i had never gotten before, from then on until only maybe 3 or 4 years ago i was obsessed with GnR,i last had saw "them"in 2002,when i heard they were reuniting i almost cried,i saw them in 2016,then axl had to open his big mouth about politics and ill never give him another dime, true story
Got to see them in Sep '87 in a 5,000 seat outdoor amphitheater in San Antonio. My friends and my 16 y.o. self were there to see The Cult headline as we were playing the shit out of the Electric album that summer. My first impression was that these guys were hungry and it was raw and I'm glad I got to see them live before MTV and radio over saturation the next few years. Good times.
I remember listening to the album for quite a while before it became huge. Then it blew up, and a bunch of us kids were like...........ya, this is almost old now, been playing the shit out of this for almost a year lol
It is one of the best albums ever
The best line up
Ive gotten every last cent out of this album.several times back in the day
LETS GOOOO!!!!
Absolute classic! People tend to forget these guys only put out 4 albums , spaghetti not included. What a band , what a run! Over 50 million copies of Appetite sold and the songs never get old.
Blame Rose's ego for the break up and for no more albums.
@@daviddoyle8956 you don’t blame you give thanks that we got what we did from them. All bands have egos. Is Pink Floyd diminished in some way because of Waters and Gilmour?
Thanks for this,I am a huge fan, and Always searching for this kind of material
Thank you!
Saw them in Philly in August of 88 opening for Aerosmith when Appetite hit #1
98 degrees with as high humidity the large crowd of women dressed in next to nothing
Great double bill
Thank you for this vid!
Thank you! 😃
One of my favorite albums of all time and should I say the "Best Rock Album" of the late 80's. On the side note, It's surprising that the guitar used by Slash on the record is a "Fake" Gibson or a "copy" of the Original 1959 Gibson Les Paul. Slash's guitar is made by the legendary luthier Kris Derrig and not from the Gibson company.🔥the album that sold 100 million plus copies is played on a fake LesPaul that has a Gibson logo.🤭😂 That's inspiring, I will cherish and setup my Beautiful 1959 Chibson Les Paul. It's so beautiful at only $250.😆
That's because the guitar has very little to do with the tone. Didn't Jimmy Page also use Fender or something, and everyone said how great Gibsons sound?
@@metalzonemt-2 Haha, exactly!😅 It's just a shot on the "gear elitist snob" who always want the most expensive gear possible to sound good. I know people who are always on the lookout for the "holy grail" instrument and buying $10,000+ guitars (Gibson and Fender) thinking it would make their playing better or their sound cooler. But It's not actually the gear - it's the player and the songwriting that really matters. I'm really inspired by the Slash Fake Gibson LesPaul story, the Jimmy Page copy or the Brian May homemade guitar. Cheers!👌💯
@@metalzonemt-2 i was going to say the same thing its in the fingers not the label on the guitar
@togood2betrue3: about 30 million copies worldwide.
brilliant album
Great video man!
Thank you!
seeing Slash in a DefJam t shirt is pretty badass
amazing stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it 😃
In my top 5 greatest albums of all time.
I saw that gig here in Montréal, they opened for Iron Maiden.
0::35 "We're sorry sir, but we can't give you any money. It says on the check your name is STASH...not SLASH"

I was looking to see if anyone picked that up 😂
It’s also what he spent most of his money on.

2 things I noticed as I gotten older as far as Rock Music & Sitcoms. 1. ppl. luv Raw Rock, that's not really polished up. (1st Motley Album, Old Metallica and Appetite for Destruction) & 2nd. ppl luv tight knit family/friends sitcoms that portray a working class ppl.
10/10
I wish there was of video of their recording the album. Too bad no one thought to have a video recorder.
Me too! I suppose quite often people aren’t aware they’re creating history.
We were spoiled by all that footage of Metallica's Black Album being recorded haha I wish for that kind of documentation for all my favourite albums
love these videos! would love even more to see one on weezers blue album or pinkerton
Thank you! And thanks for the suggestions!
My first rnr album and only got it coz the cover before that it was Michael Jackson and NKOTB
I just stumbled on to your channel. Great attention to detail. I enjoyed the video! You got a new sub from me!
Thank you! It's much appreciated 🙂
According to an Art of Drumming video recreating the drum sound of Appetite, the snare was. 1920s Ludwig 5x14 “heavy weight brass” snare. Awesome sound whatever it was. Plus a lot of studio mixing magic.
Thanks for the info on the snare, maybe it was the one in the photo with the Gretsch kit. Looks like a brass snare.
The Best Rock Album
The original mix of Mr Brownstone is on the back of the It's So Easy single, without all the reverb that is caked all over Appetite. It sounds *much* better to my ears.
Nice details
Thank you!
Personally i think it needs a new "2024" mix of the multitrack, like what Pearl Jam did with VS Redux, and all of that piles of reverb on the drums removed from Appetite. Its damn well swimming in reverb, sounds like the drums are in the next room
We need the video
So, was there no master bus compressor? Or is there no information available about that? Thanks for the amazing video!
Thank you! Not sure about the master bus comp…
Love the detail in this one with regards to the recording..doesnt surprise me that Adler couldnt play to a click given that he had that swing feel and it can make you feel like you are late. I also have a hell of a time playing to click depending on the type of drumming i am doing.
Cheers! Definitely was a good decision, much prefer the swing!
I wonder if you could have asked Clink for an interview - that really would've added something to this video.
That would have been great, I did get a lot of the recording information from an interview he gave with Dave Pensado.
To expand on that Jackson Slash used first. Mike Clink said in an interview that slash came in to record with the Jackson but there were old strings on it. So Slash just cut off all the strings at once on the guitar and that messed it up so it wouldn’t stay in tune anymore.
If it had strings on springs, it was never that stable to begin with. No matter what the advertising says. Depending on the audience or expectation, a trem guitar will have you in the ballpark if not in the infield on a good one. But it won't be dead nuts for long. Having to tune and retune every take, it would become a stress and easier to just go for hardtail if your style doesn't require the trem stuff. Cutting the strings wasn't the main reason that guitar wasn't going to work.
Mike Clink is as much a behind the success of AFD than any member of the band.
Of course no mention of the studio ringers that sat in on this record lol
Can you do this type of video for the illusion albums
Thanks
Definitely!
I’ll get working on it!
As good as Never Mind the Bullocks by the Sex Pistols..For they lived it first like the Pistols!
So many incorrect information here. But you nailed the equipment and gear part, so that’s cool.
Like what?
I tried paying attention to the details of the recording process and the equipment used. I enjoyed it, but I keep bouncing back to the part about Slash shooting up much of the album's advance. I think, predating 2024, I was ignorant of Slash being a heroin addict.
It's all in his autobiography, too. Quite a few incidents graphically detailed, with him jonesing because somebody had stolen his secret stash, and the band almost having to cancel a milestone-level important gig, and somebody dying on him, and him almost dying on somebody else, and what not. Some people have said that he's not entirely honest in the book, passing the blame on the OD death of a friend to somebody else, but it's worth a read. Duff's autobio, too. Very informative stuff.
0:32s "Stash" 🤣
🤣
Waywardness!
Ha, that's a funny way of putting it
Can you do the UYI albums!
Yes! Definitely 😃
The sheer sense of entitlement youd have to have to steal an amp from the rental company, then get mad at your roadie when the victim finds out about your crime.
The talent was there but in the beginning something was missing. The sells didn’t took off until the boss of Geffen Records understood that the best decision was to make a video so they can sell the image of the band to all the young people at the time .
Sex drugs and Rock N Roll .. was the formula 🎶😎 and worked perfectly
Guns N Fuckin’ Roses 🔥🔥🎶🎶Ladies and Gentlemen
where did u find the info about the drum mics ? quality video
Thank you, I think that was from a Mike Clink interview on Pensado's place.
The fact that guns and roses who could not go six months with a stable lineup put out one of the. Greatest albums of all time is a credit to the producers of the album and label
But the settings pictures in the documentary are real or only for telling story or knowledge purpose?
I try and use pictures of the studios where I can.
LEGDSBLOODYARSOMMM
Are you sure Steven used a black beauty? I’m obsessed with his appetite snare tone, and for the longest time I thought he used the 1920s nickel over brass snare that sold on the auction.
Could be, seems to be a few differing accounts of what was used.
4:30.. the much revered #39.
1:57 Ole Beich
7:00 Steve Adler’s girlfriend at the time
AFD was outstanding because it sounded like nothing in the 80's.
On the first advance check his name is Stash!😂😂😂
🤣
About the guitar amp.. btw.. Lynch was using this amp!... and it was at the Dokken's sound check... they took it... lol
How did no one notice that album for nearly a year? wtf is wrong with people
0:33 who's STASH???
😂 good spot!
“Stash”? LOL They got his name wrong on the check. However I completely understand why they thought his name was “stash”
😂
0:31 why its STASH?
No idea, I’m presuming someone misheard the name and he wasn’t famous then.
The girl Axl was with on Rocket Queen was Duff's gf at the time.
Yeah, obviously a very close band then. 😮
Steven's GF
It was three way with Axl, Slash and Steven's stripper GF.
Axl and his lady friend on Rocket Queen??? You mean Steven Adler's girlfriend.
Yep, that's the one!
It’s the only album they made that’s good.
Appetite was a monster album. Love it. But I guess I'm one of the few that thinks everything they recorded after that was b-roll. Once these guys got paid they were useless as artists.
Use Your Illusion bored the shit out of me, huge disappointment after Live like a suicide, GnR Lies and Appetite.
As soon as They fired Steven they lost that punk rock energy the original Line up was the best to me. I ve never Been a huge fan of Matt drum thinking it was too much compared to Steven.
Too bad nothing else they did was ever as good.
Axl was the BEST EVER.! Now retire please, today he is painful to watch live.
Then don't watch, it's as simple as that.
GnR is such a wierd band, about 7 great songs, no album good enough to listen to straight through. This generations rolling stones extremely overrated.
lol whatever random guy
No good album? Appetite is perfection from start to finish. Zeppelin, Stones, Beatles, Aerosmith, Eagles. None have one great album. Maybe one or two good songs, and the rest is mostly fillers.
You’re obviously not somebody who grew up during that time and if you are then there’s something wrong with you
Slash is very average and overated. No EVH. He hasn't done anything mind-blowing since appetite. Very one album hit wonder.
I'm sorry but you can never achieve good quality records like this with plugins and amp sims .
