I was going to say something like 454 would murder your forearm until I seen they put a blast shield around the cylinder. I’d probably buy one if they made it
@@alexb7641 they should have made a raging circuit judge rifle years ago but they just haven't. Probably because of the forward cylinder lock but they still could have figured something out
If this sells well, they might end up making a Raging Judge version of it. They want to test the waters with the base model first and see if it's even worth manufacturing. I suspect this will find more buyers than the Circuit Judge.

I have a "house" shotgun with a laser, also a pistol dedicated for the same purpose, but it has a light. The light is my preference. Sure, the laser gives you an POI reference, but in the dark, you need a light. A light/laser combo may be the best option. Out in the country where there is little to no ambient light, that little red or green dot doesn't help in target identification. You will need a light, either on the weapon or in the hand.
I got a flashlight that can adjust the beam width. Depending on the load the spread of the flash light almost covers the spread of the shot gun. Works great for indoor use.
I have a home defense shotgun with a light/laser combo and a full size home defense pistol with a light so target identification is possible. Both are very close POI at the “hot” center spot of the light.
Great review. Taurus has really stepped up their game in all arena's. This firearm is a must have. So many great features. Ideal for Home defense as would make a great travel firearm.
I'm more impressed with Federals handgun buckshot out of the 2.5 barrel than the Judge itself. Five 9mm diameter projectiles have a 6 inch spread at 25 yards. That's a firing squad every trigger pull. 18 inches in gel too. Out of this thing, you're probably getting another 200fps and an even tighter spread.
My public defender is my nightstand gun. 3 410 pdx and 2 45 pdx after. Small house so 25 feet would be the longest but even out to 40 or 50 feet can consistently put meaningful hits on target with either flavor. Also doubles as my snake/varmint gun when I’m out and about
Or you can just run a regular old 12 gauge pump shotgun like a Mossberg 500 /590 or even the 88 with an adapter and run Minnie shells for higher capacity easier to find ammunition with more options available and you get a buttstock 🤷♂️
I had a similar though. In addition, the Mossberg Shockwave is available at .410 Bore, and its significantly cheaper. I can understand the attraction of the Judge Revolvers (I don't own one, but I recently got a SW Governor), but one is different. This will definitely attract people already into the Judge label, but this looks like it is attempting to fill a role that is already filled by the Shockwave, the Remington Tac - 13 and 14, and various other firearms who have an established records, and are doing it cheaper. As for the capacity to fire 45 Colt. Is there really a serious demand for this?
Some people don’t want pumps. Some people want semi automatic z and a revolver like this is the closest thing you can get to semiautomatic. I'd like to see chrono results with this 13" barrel; I'm betting that all of the "Judge" and field shotshells will get a very big boost in velocity / effectiveness.
I don't see a review of this firearm by Paul; he did review the standard Taurus Judge, and a 3" bbl will have a significantly lower velocity than a 13"bbl. Most .410 "Judge" Shotshells are factory rated by their respective manufacturers at about 750fps ( Winchester PDX and Hornady Triple Defense specifically ) for the most popular 3"bbl length. @@walkingwolf8072
I feel like without the NFA, it would be even better to have one with a stock and a shorter barrel, but still long enough to grip like this. I can't get past that tiny capacity just because of the slow reload time. Maybe if it had 12 rounds or was quick to feed.
Since the Taurus is actually designed for Home Defense, what about doing a review of the Armscore VRF14 ?? I think it will give the Taurus a run for its money !! It's a 12 gauge, it's semi auto, have a pistol grip, and uses 5 or 9 round magazines The Armscore VRF14 is the first firearm Armscore have manufactured entirely in the USA
Lose the red dot sight. In most situations, it will just slow you down. If you can't hit a man size target at typical home defense ranges without using sights of any kind, you need to spend more time at the range. And the number one attribute of any self-defense firearm is reliability. Putting electronic gadgets on a gun simply provides another point of failure. When I took my CCW class years back, our instructor was a big fan of lasers. When we went to the range, he demonstrated the effectiveness of the laser on his own pistol. He drew his firearm, pointed it down range and ... nothing. No laser. He started fiddling with it, trying to get it to come on. Until someone in the group said, "forget it, the bad guy has already stabbed you 18 times".
The Circuit Judge is a Rossi but Taurus does own Rossi. BTW, its .410 bore, not gauge. Gauge for a .410 bore would be 67.5 gauge while some Europeans and their shotguns incorrectly refer to it as 36 gauge. Cylinder bore? It can also shoot .45 Colt so it should have some rifling even if its shallow. Thanks for mentioning and showing the .45 Colt since most reviewers only mention and show .410 shotshells. Thanks for clarifying below about the shallow rifling. When you said cylinder bore it threw me.
45 Colt will take out anything on the continent with the right bullet. The only question is how accurate it is. This and the 6" would be very interesting if accurate.
Unlikely. 410 is the only caliber that allows them to get away with classifying this as a pistol and not a shotgun. As soon as the bore goes over .50 caliber, the rules change. Taurus considered a 28-gauge Judge years ago but there just wasn't any way to sell it in the US without a tax stamp, so they abandoned the project.
I think Taurus DIDN'T go far enough, 'out of the box', with this one. I'm calling it's intended purpose a home defense gun, or truck gun. It's a great start, though. First of all, size isn't that much of a factor, so why not put a GIANT CYLINDER on it, with like 10 rounds or more? The barrel could easily fire from the bottom of the cylinder (if necessary), then have a laser site on top of the barrel... maybe a flashlight under the barrel. And the last thing is how does buckshot spread out, from this thing at home defense distances? I guess you'd want something like a 6" circle at 25 feet? (not sure what's ideal)
What are the things that make an 'ideal' home defense gun? 1. Never jamming (revolver) 2. Quieter is better (subsonic/suppressed) 3. Shot 'spread' at shorter range 4. Laser sights or holosights (both eyes open) 5. Decent capacity (can't predict home invasions) 6. Normal to low recoil 7. Flashlight 8. ? I think Taurus got a few things... why not go for one gun to rule them all?
Because it has a rifled barrel, it is simply classified as a pistol. No NFA or non-NFA firearm shenanigans to worry about. The only states that would ban this are the ones that already ban the Judge.
Everybody talks about putting a flashlight or laser on the front picatinny rail. Why not do something more cooler or more effective? My idea is to mount either a bayonet or a 37 mm flare gun launcher.
