With its funky design, surprising amount of interior space, powerful turbo engine, and standard 6-speed stick, the Veloster R-Spec certainly makes a strong case for itself on paper. Those of you looking for something other then your friends Civic or tC coupe may find a lot to like with this 2016 model. This car gets a lot of hate being a Hyundai but its looks so sick!
It's a nice car , but the R spec is a bit silly for a car with such a small engine.Still,I think it would be a nice rally car.

You need to remove fuse 25 to get rid of the fake intake sound. You can remove a few pins in the plug to the amplifier or put a switch in the line to remove that fake sound from the speakers. I drove my wife's R-Spec VT across town recently and it was amazing how many looks and stares I got from other drivers. Ride quality is partly due to the crappy tires. I have read that new tires that have good grip really improve ride, wheel hop, loss of traction when accelerating, handling and faster 0-60 times since they improve getting power down.
I love my red seat belts and the extra HP is welcome. It is not the best car in the world, but it is one of the best at its price. The Veloster is a unique car and the turbo just adds to its fun. Test drive the competitors first and you will understand if it is for you or not. I can own many cars of more cost, but this one is the most fun I have tried. Now, on my third one, I will say it is a solid ride and more fun than shown in this video. Maybe if I didn't have a garage full of motorcycles, I might choose differently ... and if you do not plan to go into competition ... this is well worth it in so many ways.
Bike rider too. 200 hp, front wheel drive (Canadian/snow) great milage and fun to drive. I have a mini base now but looking for a bit more punch. I drove one a few years ago and had a blast. Not sure why I didn't buy it. Looking to possibly pick one up. Comments are always where you find out more about the car/bike you are looking at. Thanks for the real comment. Cheers.

Bought my veloster rspec new in 2015 and i still drive it daily in 2023 92k miles and still running strong!

LaObeja Negra I want to buy it as a first car cause I've heard it was a good car but I went deeper into the research and I found that the 2013-2016 had engine problems where it would overtime degrade and blow up but I'm not sure

I learned to drive stick in a Veloster, I thought I really sucked because I stalled it a lot too. Good to know the clutch actually is kinda crappy feeling.
Just went from a 14 Si to a 16 Veloster turbo manual. Different cars but I like boost of the Hyundai and the fact that it's lighter. It's one of the few compacts on my bucket list. The Honda feels a bit more refined but the 2.4 was rather bland compared to the 08 Si I had with the K20. The Veloster is fun, you can feel the boost. Any short-comings with the suspension dynamics can be helped with minor aftermarket. I have no brand loyalty and from an unbiased position I think the Veloster Turbo is just as engaging as my 14 Si but not quite as good, overall, as my 08 Si.
I owned one a few years back. LOVED the look. Handling was fine. Power was disappointing even with the turbo.
I would have gladly paid considerably more for a better engine.
I then went to an S4, Charger RT AWD, and now a WRX.
Agricultural lawn mower that's one for the books lol...
Also they power tapering between shifts is because of the gear indicator that recommends what gear you need to be in. If you unplug it from the clutch it completely eliminates it. Also makes the throttle lag non existent.

You have to hold down the button to turn off your traction control and stability system to get rid of that wheel hop. I am up to 255 hp with my SXTH element engineering mods.

My Veloster base automatic gets 38.9 MPG. I can't see how it was rated so poorly.
Your car is the base model, the turbo supposed to be 30mpg average, instead it's barely hitting 24mpg. That's kinda sad if you look up a V6 Charger or Chevy Impala nearly twice the weight and twice the engine size and they get nearly 30mpg.

Also, why do you go full acceleration while turning pretty much 90 degrees on most tests? Have you considered not doing this? It also amplifies torque steer which leads to a poor review on a cars torque steer. I'm not sure many people go WOT when almost at full wheel lock, ever.

Yup, they did. It was sometime last year.
the rspec says on paper it makes 201, but dyno charts say they put down 185-189, so the rspec has more like 215-220hp. the turbo model also has 16 lbs of boost compared to 18 on the rspec
I have an R-Spec, and I installed a boost gauge. I never see it above 15-16 psi, so this guy may be misinformed. As far as I know there is no difference between the turbo and r-spec engine wise.
I would be interested to see the dct just as a comparison to the gti's dct
Fredrick Altenhoff my dct is faster then my old manual turbo veloster I had especially after the eco update. Hope this helps. It's a little jerky when cold. But most dcts are.
im looking into getting a new one of these but is it worth going for the turbo or just the base to save money
just my opinion, but I ordered an r-spec, and while I waited for it to be delieverd, they gave me a base with a 7spd auto. hands down slowest car I have ever driven including my GFs Toyota Yaris.I was honestly nervous everytime there was cause to merge onto a highway. If you dont want to plan lane changes and getting on and off the interstate days in advance, pay the extra for the turbo. worth every penny, and the 2 mpg you lose. again just my opinion.

when did Hyundai add the dct (dual clutch) to the Turbo models ?
2016. It sucks. If you want to modify your car it can only take a little over 200 at the wheels. The actual automatic's able to get around 330. The manual's gone up to 500.
Fiat 500 Abarth is a competitor as well as the Fiesta ST, Scion TC, maybe a 2015 or older Civic Si.

you know what's funny my cousin used to have a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT as his first whip until he crashed it wasn't his fault it was the other guy's fault and I'm pretty sure his 2003 Hyundai Tiburon used the same key as this 2016 Hyundai Veloster
why dump the clutch at 2k rpm? A gentle release would probably sell the car better. Smokin tire reports a rev hang between gear shifts, did you encounter that?

+Paul G There are times when we just get a certain type of press vehicles from manufacturers in sequence, its not that we favor the particular brand, they just come in that row because of the schedule for that month. That being said, we do have a 2016 Volvo coming in early June :)
+Paul G I went to the Volvo dealership recently and the interiors are really amazing. The seats are so comfy and there's so much standard equipment in the base models that the Germans can't compare to.

They have a long way to go with the Veloster. I can't get over the accent chassis. Its really holding the car back. They need to make the Rally edition AWD with a bigger turbo. It definitely has the potential to be a real rally hatch. I'm tired of manufactures putting bland "upgrades" and color schemes, as if they justify the speciality of any edition of a car.. scion tc for example.

Because its the R-Spec. the point is to make it the enthusiest option. so by getting rid of some of the bells and whistles that enthusiasts typically don't care about, like sun roofs and heated seats, and only offering one transmission, a proper 6spd, theyre able to upgrade the handling over the regular turbo, and still offer it for a grand less. If you want the bells and whistles, then get a fuly loaded Turbo. The R-Spec is a stripper.
I had a 2012 civic si coupe then I got my new 2016 Hyundai Veloster turbo r-spec and my Veloster still owns my old civic by a long shot with performance civic couldn't catch up you make it seem like Honda has better performance
Everyone says that the veloster replaced the tiburon but the genesis coupe looks and has waaaaay more design cues from the tiburon than the veloster does. I no I have a 08 tiburon 2.0 and a 15 gen coupe 3.8
Genesis may look similar to the tiburon, but its got almost 2x the power, rwd, is much bigger, and more expensive. in terms of a spiritual sucessor, it the Veloster. Similar power, fwd, price point.

Even though the Veloster N performs way better than this car, I still prefer the looks of the previous generation veloster in general.

also most people don't go wide open all the time especially around turns in their compact car
He has the trims confused. R-spec=track package Rally= rally suspension and steering. Turbo= regular turbo Veloster least preformance most features
that transmission sounds like is gonna break some time sooner. the auto transmission might have a better mpg and linear power 0 to 60
Im looking to buy one of these and it has a push button start and its a R-spec
double check on that. it gets confusing now because they started putting the R-spec interior in other velosters as options. for the love of God make sure you don't get a NAV.
