Enjoyed that one. The cambelt change brought back memories from mid 90s. Guards Red 944s, bought "approved used" from, coincidently, Road Range/Mann Island, with a full service history from them and the cambelt lost a few teeth just out of the 12 month warranty period. Expensive way to learn that a full main dealer service history doesn't actually mean much - except from a marketing perspective. My 10 cents - change the cambelt irrespective of whether it's been done before
I agree!
Road range used to go there for parts when I worked for cars of distinction in Hatton garden
The best channel on YouTUbe on quality car restoration and saving. I thoroughly enjoy these videos. The skills Gary demonstrates are awesome. The ways he describes his actions and methods is inspiring and Gary seems a hell of a nice guy as well.
No doubt the very best. He's not like the other channels that have loads and loads of money and doesn't show the procedures of how things work or need to be fixed. He really needs to get more credit for his work.
@@klwthe3rd I fully agree with you.
@@Vince_uk I agree 👍🏻
Agree, fantastic series and always inspires me to get stuck in and start a project
Absolutely a pleasure to watch Gary.
A channel deserving of far more attention!
Harry's Garage has been my favourite petrolheads channel for more than a few years....until now that is. What a great 'real world' video. I was involved in the Porsche races when Tony Dron drove a 928GT. He loved that car even though the 911's weight over the wheels got them off the line in front at every race.
Thanks Gary.
Great job on the wheels Gary. They look awesome. Easy job to do while you wait on cam belt change is to remove the battery, clean and treat the battery box, where acid has likely leaked and caused corrosion. Also worthwhile locating the various grounds/earths on the car and cleaning those as well as fuses and relays. 928’s don’t like dirty electrical connections and are a primary source of random electrical issues.
You have the most soothing voice! I love what you’re doing with the 928. Also, loved your talk with Magnus Walker.
Found this channel from watching Magnus W! Something about a scouser accent , super cars and a fella who knows what he is doing!! You can apply this to any project you have anywhere!! Simply enjoying to watch you work ! 🍻 Cheers from the panhandle of florida!! Defuniak Springs to be exact! I got a pint for ya’ if your this way friend!!
Those wheels are a work of art
Beautiful car. I have an 84 928s guards red aka indischrot with the 2 tone tan interior with brown dash and door rests. Had it since 2015 when i bought it from the original owner's son after he had a stroke. Bonded with it driving it over 1000 miles from California back to Texas. 59k miles then 77k now. Incredible highway car. Power wonderfully linear. Welcome to the shark owner club and wishing you many chocolate miles (empty roads on a beautiful sunny day). Get on rennlist. Great brain trust of long time 928 owners and mechanics on there.
Hi Frank. Those California roads are drivers dreams. I’ve just returned from there. Have you changed the Cambelt? I’ve heard horrendous stories. Regards.
Excellent to see Gary complete a DIY wheel refurbishment, everyone else just ‘drops them off’ , great to see it done to a quality rather than a price 👍
Exactly. They just farm everything out. I understand that some things need to go to a specialist but what makes this channel so special is seeing Gary do it himself so the pride of the repair is evident.
Beautiful and detailed images, sweet music and soft voice with that wonderful accent… pure automotive poetry !
Its looking like real progress gary. Do get a new set of wheel bolts but only once the jobs are done and the wheels dont have to keep coming off. One other thing though many get wrong. Tread on tyres is one thing but age is another factor as uv destroys the rubber compounds over time which can lead to sudden failures and blowouts. Google the tyre marking showing the age against the manufactures codes to find out month and year of manufacture. Unless stored in darkness with covers on really anything over 6/7 years feels like a long time. and find out the recommended tyre life. for what will be relatively small commitment it will give huge confidence if you change them at the end of the process and get them all rebalanced as i noticed weights on the inside and the restoration may have also upset those. But really for this car new tyres are a must. Plus they may have flat spots from being stored in the garage for so long.
Hi. Tires are all brand new for recent mot and wheels I’ve had rebalanced after refurb. Regards.
I absolutely ADORE this car… I’m so envious. So impressed also that you are doing as much of the work yourself, astonishing skills sir
Great as usual! When ever I watch your videos it always reminds me of the 90s band The LA’s for some strange reason
I miss the days when dealers/service specialists would stamp their shop into the maintenance guides that came with the car. Nowadays, they don't do that procedure anymore. Nobody things about the next caretaker of their vehicles so they don't take the care to document it in the proper way. Great video.
I've loved the Porsche 928 since first seeing one the early 80's. It's my dream car. So glad to see it getting the attention it deserves. The Lotus Esprit is very nice too. Thank you.
This is the best channel on UA-cam.
First the oily bits, then the bodywork. That's how it usually goes. I hope the doors and the fenders won't be too much of a pain since they are aluminum, Hope we might get to see some type of Anti Corrosion techniques/products soon on this program, really curious how you folks over seas tackle rust and such, we've got our Corrosion Free which the Canadian army uses, there is another called Krown but they drill into the body panels. Man I'm excited to see this, Can't wait to see how this all turns out, great stuff as usual!
This channel is so good, I wish I could subscribe twice..! Looking forward to seeing this 928 progress.
Gary, some yrs ago I helped an independent Porsche mechanic on the weekends.
We started working on 924s. At first it took us about six hrs to replace the cam belts. Soon we were able to do the job on four hrs. It's not that bad !
I know. When the cars repainted it’s the first job on the list. I’m going to use a gates belt with the porc tensioner. Esther than the Conti kit Porsche use. These stretch and have to be re-tensioned. I don’t know why they use them. Regards
I just plastic media blasted those same model wheels, saves a lot of time.
Hi Gary, I'm a new subscriber and loved watching your two parts on the 928. It's my favourite Porsche model and, always remember my first drive. It was like being in a spaceship at night. Looking forward to part three.
It's not too hard to change the belt. Be prepared to rebuild the tensioner, water pump and guide rollers. Check the cam shaft gears for wear, if the coating has gone you'll need new, if left will wear the belt faster. The fuel lines run around the rear wheel arch, exposed and will rust through on the top where the wet mud sits on them. Check them to be safe. Same for rubber fuel lines in the engine bay, the U bend under the air box particularly. Give me a shout if you need the air mass meter checked. Great work on the wheels. JDSPorsche
Appreciated. Many thanks
Beautiful work gary. This car would be a good candidate for ice blasting
I’m currently looking for a company near me who do this but no results. Regards.
Have you been in touch with Loe Bank Motors in Ramsbottom they did my 928 cam belt and water pump in the past. Chris worked on 928's when they were new and has an excellent reputation.
Said they were too busy..
If you end up doing the belt yourself - please check the condition of the cam sprockets. If you see any shiny aluminium there, you will need to speak to Roger Tyson at 928RuS. His company can supply a cheaper alternative to the Porsche part, which is now £450 and there are two of them. Also, removing the rear bumper - be prepared for skinned knuckles and rusted through fasteners. At least studs can be easily re-welded on the support brackets. Don’t ask how I know… I’m 4yrs into something similar to your project - one elderly gents 1989 S4 spd…
You should contact Loe Bank Motors in Bury in respect of the cambelt. Chris specializes in the 928 and has helped me maintain the four I have had. Loe Bank and 928 Spares (Gloucester) are the two recognised 928 specialists in the UK. Others will tackle them but don't specialise in them. Good luck with the refurb.
Wheels look great! What I've done with the centre caps in the past is taken them back to bare metal then polished them up, dusted with black and flatted back then lacquered. They look really nice like that!
Try Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank for the cambelt... And for shocks I'd go Bilstein B6 direct, shoul dbe around £200/corner....
Re the RDK tyre pressure monitor, you can bypass the system by bridging out two of the pins on the connector which goes to the module under the instrument cluster...
Finally a job worth doing if you've got no record of it is an oil flush on the PSD e-diff pump. Easy and will save ££££s if the pump fails :)
Great job on the wheels
What a beautiful car! It's a joy to see it being well cared!
You would have thought that all the so called specialist would understand the importance of meticulous records. It's very frustrating when it's clear people just don't care. Nice work on the wheeels, Gary and as always, thanks for sharing.
Again Great video, i seriously thought you would take the wheels off and take them to get sorted, great work by you , if you do the cam belt yourself you are a brave man , but like my dad used to say , if you want something doing properly do it yourself 👍
Greetings from Holland , love the 928 .
Great work. Beautiful example
Again your practical skills and passion for classic cars shows through. The Lotus Esprit your friend had was a V8 , whereas the car from Pretty Woman was a four cylinder turbo still with the same later Peter Stevens later styling . The original cars were styled by Guigario , like the two Bond cars , one in The Spy who Loved Me , the other in For Your Eyes Only, both with Sir Roger Moore. Great stuff, Gary, keep them coming.
Lovely stuff!
Nice Car - good viewing 👍
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽Hold them too account ... Thank you, your videos are educational ... I am surprised these Porsche dealerships are even willing to help you 😲
The wheel refurb is an amazing job Gary! Why not treat the wheels to new sets of bolts ;-)
Hello Gary
I am really enjoying your videos, I love the detail that you go into. I am a petrol head but I have never had enough money to buy the cars that I would really like, apart from three new ones that I have had since I passed my test at 17. I am now 76 so I just avoided the need to have a man with a red flag in front of me. The reason I began to watch you was I saw the ad regarding your Mercedes 600. I have always loved Mercedes and two years ago bought an E 220 cdi and I have been so impressed with the quality. I love your tenacity how you have the determination to refurbish any problem that you encounter. I have just watched your first video on the red Porsche 928. That is another one I would buy if I had the money, any colour but I would love leather upholstery . Did you manage to retain that registration on the Porsche, if you did well done. I have subscribed to your channel so I will try to find all your old vids that you might have posted.
Hi, I’ve also had an E320 CDI and an E220 Estate and loved them both. Bullet proof quality. I’m only a newby to UA-cam but now have 30 videos. Just press the subscribe / notifications button (it’s free) and they should all come up. Thankyou for watching, kind comments and support. Regards.
Great episode, those rims cleaned up beautiful!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Brilliant I love the attention to detail.
Really enjoying this restoration Gary!! Well done! And greetings from Charlotte, NC USA
Look better than new , great 👍 job Gary lad
Morning Gary ! Great job on the wheels and looking far better ! This is one super looking car. I cant believe how much dirt came out of those wheel arches - should make it go a little faster 🤣 We talked about the Cambelt at the show and am intrigued to see what route you took in the end. Looking forward to seeing progress on this over the coming episodes and look forward to the next Rolls episode - ive got a real soft spot for this car🤩 Keep up the good werk ! Cheers Stew
Hi Gary, great channel and videos. In my opinion, you have covered all the bases by making this video which can easily be looked up by the next owner if he/she requires provenance. This attitude of the Porsche independent specialists is unfortunately common to other marques nowadays. I have been restoring a BMW 840Ci for a good few years, and it is a similar deal with that car. We would all like to see you do the cam belt, correctly, but if you don't mind a trip over the Pennines to Brighouse, West Yorkshire, there are some colleagues of mine who I think would have no problem taking the job on. They fully restore all Porsche's and are nice guys. They trade as Performance Porsche/Klassiker if you are interested.
Great work there Gary ,listening to a fellow scouser fixing up these old Girls gives me a lot of Deja vu from my last 50 years doing all this stuff..keep up the good work
Just found this channel
Excellent format
Great attitude we’ll worth the effort well done
Garry
Great video again Gary. You inspired me to get my channel back up and running again. Cheers 😊
Thanks , I really enjoyed that 😊
Thank you for another fabulous and relaxing presentation Gary. I always look forward to your videos and truly wish they were longer.
Great video! Looking forward to seeing how you get the rear quarter glass out, it's a job I need to do too...
I had one of these and it's a fantastic car. A few problems to look for, the rear deck seal will leak because the glue comes loose and it will get into the spare tire well and believe me you don't want that. My wiper motor went out and replace every hose on it power steering especially. It's a great car and you can drive it hard all day. Looks good so far! Cheers!
Great video Gary, lovely to see this beautiful car coming together.
I love these cars. You’re right to worry about that belt. I can’t wait to see the work you do on the body work. It sure needs a lot of work. The spot around the mirror is a strange place to rot. That interior by the way. Amazing transformation and it’s so cool it almost looks a little space age. Love it.
Great video I totally enjoyed this ,look forward to more on this project. Cheers from Noosa Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Good luck with the cam-belt 🤞
Loving watching you bring this beauty back to its former glory and had a thought when you mentioned respraying the car, maybe have a think about removing the 'rub strips' on each side, It's a much cleaner look (imho) for what will be a stunning restoration.
Absolutely agree. 928s look way nicer with smooth sides. 👍
...Gary, the bottom of the Porsche crest on the wheel centres should line up with the valve. OPCs are under instruction from Porsche GB to make sure they are on cars they deal with.
Great video, like your laid back approach to all of its issues, please keep updating.
My soul has been cleaned along with the 928 while watching this, it happens with every episode.
Another great vid gary always enjoy your vids keep them coming mate many thanks
Your attention to detail is impressive Gary, loving the series!
Have a 5-speed 89 S4. Beautiful work on those D90s!
Love the 928. Really interesting seeing you tackle it
Love these vids Gary....very informative
Paul Anderson is the name for 928s in the UK. GAZ does a set of coil overs for the 928 if you want to go down that route. A new front Bilstein B6 will set you back about £220
Love the vid , all the cleaniing is well worth it before paint prep (that rust is deep !!!!! ) . It looks like a total strip down good look 👍
Wonderful to see the attention to detail. ❤
I refurbed my wheels…. Was quite chuffed how they came out😉……. I reckon the cam belts well within your brief😎…. With your knowledge and background….. keep all bills an crack on yourself 😂💪🏼
Gary, those 928 wheels…WOW!!! Hard work certainly pays off! Unbelievable
Alright Gary just saw you then in the Rolls. Wow what a great looking car 👍Love the channel.
Another great video - thanks 👍
Your Karscher sounds as knackered as mine 😂
Thanks again Gary. Wheels look outstanding! Good luck with the cambelt
Two factory special sockets to remove RDK sensors are £150 total. Over 30 year old O-rings on those sensors should be changed in any case. Also sensors are missing plastic covers. Things are worth doing things right way and in 928 there is no cutting corners. They are expensive to fix but not fixing them right way gets even more expensive quickly.
Great vlog yet again Gary. What a good looking car the 928... Gets better looking as it gets older...'not like me unfortunately' ... Can't wait for your next update, thank you. :-)
I really thought 928s were immune to rust and corrosion. My S4 has absolutely no rot anywhere but it is an Australian delivered and owned car so it hasnt had to face the harsh U.K climate. Also my wheels are anodised, not painted. At 165,000kms it's due for a cam belt too.
Love to see your desire to do keep old but very cool cars going!
Maestro, a pleasure and privilege to watch. Thank you.
Great video Gary 👍🏻😀
My 89 GT had a "well known specialist" cambelt change before I bought it but I had a belt tension warning come up. Took a look myself and discovered worn cam gears, worn oil pump gear, work crank gear, non functioning tensioner so I did it myself using Dwayne's guide, parts from Roger, tips from Greg from Rennlist (use a single roller on the guide below the crank) & Stan (seal the tensioner to the block with handbond, use ptfe on the adjuster and bleed valves, orientate the clamp "gap" to 12 O'clock etc). My water pump was relatively new as were the rollers so I chose to reuse them. I recommend you do it yourself, that way you know its done right.
I know. The cogs should all be replaced as they wear and snap off. Regards.
Nice job on the wheels btw. Do you have wider track? (should be spacers on the rear) IIRC
Excellent job on the wheels you must be pleased on how they turned out.
New to your channel and love it I always end the films wanting more. Well done.
Best car channel by far at the moment ... love the vibe and especially this Porsche and its story...... hello from Tipperary 😁
Nice job on the wheels. Remember that the point of the crest on the center caps should point to the valve stem.
Still a sweet car. I owned a GT once. Total money pit. 😢. But always makes me smile when one passes me .. 😊😊
Well into this guys content. As a new subscriber in his late 30s it took me an episode to realise where I had seen Gary before. I thought oh yeah Bloody Hell Its the Dr from Peak Practice the laid back scouse Dr.from the series and I must say fantastic content a really knowledgeable guy Gary like hes been in the motor trade all his life keep up the good work on a fantastically well produced channel.
Great Video, it would be great to see a video of the belt change...
Nice one Gary 🎉
Beautiful job but those wheel bolts are letting the side down :)
BTW - a cambelt change is within your capabilities. Half a day's work (or a long afternoon), do the wasserpumpe at the same time. Once the covers are off, all becomes clear.
Well…that’s before you find all the leaking O rings and seals, order them in then when they arrive from Germany (eventually) your then into 2-3 weeks..service the oil pump…let’s be realistic if you wanna do the job properly. It’s a job I could easily do myself but wouldn’t it be nice to keep the book in order and correctly stamped up? Regards.
@@classic.obsession Very true!
Paul Anderson is THE 928 specialist in the UK. I left a link earlier but it got deleted. Paul was in the 928 edition of Wheeler Dealers back in the day.
Hi, many thanks, can you leave the link again please? I don’t know how it was deleted. It wasn’t by me. Regards.
@@classic.obsession Got deleted - again. Just search Paul Anderson 928. That will find what you need.
Going by the track record of other Porsche specialists, He’s probably deleted it incase I put the job his way!! Kind regards..
@@classic.obsession Not Paul. 928s are his LIFE!
Thanks. I may give him a call then. For some reason, nobody’s brave enough to tackle these cars. They’re not difficult but industry in the Uk seems a bit lazy sometimes and companies will only tackle the simpler jobs. Specialist in a lot of fields are becoming a lost art. Regards.
Another great project
Im sure youl finish it with perfection
For sure the best clássic car restauration channel in youtube
I echo the other comments that say do it yourself. You'll probably do all the other bits that you'll spot and change that someone else will just ignore and throw it back together. If you want a job doing..... Will be a lovely car when done, enjoying the videos.
A friend used to live on a farm and I visited him in my car and the sills were caked in cow poo like that after one visit. Took ages to get it all off as I made the mistake of letting it dry on. Nightmare.
"Dont want to do the job " !.......Thats crazy....are they professionals or not ?
Give JZM Porsche a call...they did a good job with my 944 S2 belts and chains and supplied a courtesy car.
By the way great job on the car, didnt realise so much corrosion...good news its a galvanised shell....also you wouldnt need to paint the front wing if paint not cracked by a dent remover company.
Lovely car, always wanted one. Your's must be 50kg lighter now that it's clean!😊
Loe Bank in Rochdale used to do great work on my brothers 928 S4
Hi Gary, I just found your channel and I have to say yours is one of the best restoration channels, great job. I did notice when you snapped on a wheel badge that you didn’t point the bottom of the shield towards the valve stem. Am I wrong?
Yes I believe you’re right as I’ve had a few messages about this. I don’t know what the significance or advantage of doing this is but I’ll do as I’m told!! Regards..
Great video. But please........please......take those dreadful pressed black and silver plates off the Corniche. They are inappropriate and look crap. A 1975/6 car of that stature requires the correct reflective plates be they perspex or aluminium.
