Like a fine wine are these videos!
They are so well done! Bravo!
These shocks aren‘t the correct ones for the GT . Boge grey are the normal ones , Boge red is the M418 sport suspension package every GT should use. Look under the carpet in the trunk, there should be the option code sticker. The amount of corrosion on the car is massive, I have two 928 S, one from Austria and one from Swiss imported to north Germany and both have a little bit contact corrosion but not so much.
The interior of your GT is a dream, the better side of the coin in wet climate.😊 The GT is the sportiest member of the 928 line and anblast to drive!
Gary, keep on the good videos, I like your art of story telling in the clips!
Viele Grüße Karsten
Im not a mechanic, though watching Gary’s methodical approach for restoring classics is absolutely riveting! Thank you Gary! 🙏🏽👍🏽
Cant wait for the follow up to this one......
The narration is 1st class 😊
You certainly are a multi-talented fella.
And this is why you keep your collectible cars clean, dry and in a climate controlled garage. The old man had good intentions by servicing the mechanicals (somewhat) but he obviously neglected the other parts of routine maintenance. When you see the aluminum corroding, you know the car isn't being cared for properly. Thanks for documenting this. I love 928 Porsches. Best of luck.
I love seeing these old gems getting some love again after all these years.
928 is such an undervalued car, it was the first car that Porsche designed from a clean sheet of paper and was engineered to a level no car had ever been before. I have a copy of the book "Project 928" it shows the development that went into the 928, they took a 72 Audi 100 coupe, cut it in half down the length and put 100mm in to make it a wider test bed. the 4.7 V8 was installed and they did then they they sent it all over the world doing big miles in every imaginable climate for stamina testing, I wonder where that car is today ??
Good to see progress on the Porsche and your two dogs
First, thank you for the video. I know this takes you much more time than just doing the work itself. Second, please wear eye protection. Even if you don’t expect it an eye injury is at the minimum painful and annoying and at worst could lead to blindness or even loss of the eye. I say this as an eye surgeon of 20 year’s experience. Cheers!
You haven't lived until you've had to replace springs/dampers on a W203 Merc or an 03 onwards SLK. What an absolute bastard.
Nice to see the 928 getting some love.
Good work Gary, make sure you go deep on the surface prep on the aluminum that inter granular corrosion will keep popping through for ever if you don't get it all.
Like cancer…
Looking forward to the Corniche Gaz.
It will be mint when its finished Gary .
I was looking forward to watching this all day!
Another great video, the camera worked, narration, editing is spot on
Watching this Gary at 4am is so therapeutic, relaxing & moreover… very informative & interesting! Love it!
Really enjoyed the Porsche series BUT now I need Episode 4 like now....please...
You need to check the sills. The plastic sill trims capture moisture and the sills just rot out and it isn't obvious until the jacking points go.. I had to have a ton of sill work done on my '87 S4 while it was being resprayed.
Factory Guards Red is a single-stage (no clear coat) paint so go careful on the cut and polish. Paint can be thin and any body parts with a clear coat have been previously repaired/repainted by someone who didn't know Porsche. Cheers Tony
I got a Pontiac Fiero with a similar red paint. But even though its a one stage paint I couldnt get the parts I painted to match up with a one stage paint. Had to go over with clear coat to get it to match the original paint. Not sure why 🤷♂️
Im certainly not a painter. But with the clear and some buffing I got most of it flowing seamlessly with the original paint.
Old oxidised red paint certainly doesnt look nice but man is it a joy to buff it and get the deep red back 👌
@@magnusdanielsson2749 If I’m not mistaken the Fiero used a “gel coat” like on a fibreglass boat which I think is different to ‘single stage’ paint. Single Stage paint is still available by Glasurit who was the OE paint likely…
I love your style Gary, it's what we can all do at home, no need for a ton of expensive tools etc. Porsche is looking great.
Perfect timing, Gary. It's been a frustrating day, and watching your videos is always so therapeutic. My first 944 was Guards Red, so I have a particular fondness for Porsches of this era and color. Looking forward to seeing more work on this one, the Lotus, and the new Corniche. Plenty of great content lined up!
Hi Gary
Love the simplicity ,,
I have renovated a tired 997 Porsche in my garage at home to include a wide body 4s conversion full suspension rebuild third radiator ,re spray ,my own exhaust fabrication using a 991 rear box with switchable option with correct loom etc
I’m very proud of the result , I guess when you go on the journey of do it yourself , you develop a true bond with with the finished car, looking forward to your next episode
Kindest regards Dave
If I took on this job I would end up in Trembling Hills Sanatorium.
Major respect Gary for taking on this project.
Another perfect job
Always a very good spent afternoon seeing you work Gary..
I know everyones taste its everyones taste ,but a red Rolls Royce should be considered as a crime😂
Thanks Pedro and don’t worry the car will definitely have a colour change!! Regards
I love your videos. The music, the atmosphere the outcome of the graft, is echo. Thank you. 928 in gun metal gray my favorite, cheers
Having been addicted to lots of these type of videos from the top end pros like Iain Tyrrell to other - lets say, more gung ho restorers, this made a refreshing change and bought the world of restoration to a level, i think most of us could have a crack at without feeling intimidated.
Outstanding and strangely therapeutic......
Instant subscribe & like....👍👍
Love your stuff Gary, we left-handers unite on the fine work needed for classic resto jobs...attention to detail is what its all about.
And I patted myself on the back for doing a cambelt service on my Alfa spider…..bloody hell Gary you’re in a different league.
Essential viewing as always …..wonderful stuff.
I like your interviews but this is the real work. And you are showing every step of it so well!
Just completed that exact same suspension job on my S4.
I see you had Boge Reds, which are the M474 Sport Suspension option.
Faff is one word, I have several more. I kept the lower ball joint on and ended up removing the lower wishbone, with more special words.
Might want to check as it looks like you have a Blue and Red mix at the front.
Then when all done, a trip to Centregravity to get it all dialled in.
Enjoying your channel, keep up the good work.
Always enjoy your videos Gary, well done with that shocker👍
and relax......Such an easy watch 🙂
Fantastic hair!
What a voyage of discovery
Another wonderful episode ❤
It's coming along slowly but surely. Good work sir!
Another awesome relaxing video, thanks!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Another great video!
Good job
Gary so good - the patience required and the same T shirt, good to see we’re not the only ones- love the watch, thank you Ken
Another cracking episode Gary! Very much looking forward to the new Corniche and what colour you are going to paint it, How about Georgian Silver with a deep red interior!
The red shock you removed was a Boge Sport shock. However, the grey shock you installed is a Boge NON-SPORT. It has different dampening rates. 928GT's all came with Red Boge Sport shocks.
Thanks Michael, I know and I may replace them both with the red sports ones but as I’m not considering visiting the track I’m sure the grey Boge are perfectly adequate for normal driving and let’s face it, a damn site better than what came off!! Regards.
@@classic.obsession Nonetheless, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your work and learned a few new things about body work. I cant wait for your next episode.
@@classic.obsessionComing from a Rolls Royce Corniche I’m sure a more comfortable ride for the Porsche is a higher priority !
You know joking apart John, it kind of is. Although I changed my tide in the Corniche to a stiffer Harvey Bailey style ride kit. But there’s ride and then there’s handling and although I’ll probably fit two of the red sport shocks to the 928, im sure if I decided to keep the standard grey Boge they’d be more than adequate for normal driving. I’ve no desire to take the car onto a track and rip the arse out of it!! Regards
Was this thing under water? I'm just glad to see it cared for, it's been in my top 5 cars since introduction.
Rust is the killer on old cars when doing them up..
Quality again from Gary.
You’re very methodical when you do your work and make everything look easy, keep up the great work
you always maker everything look so easy gary your brilliant great job again i nearly had heart attack thought that you painted your rolls red ha cant wait for that re build wow
That was a welcome treat, actually inspirational, I made a start on my latest Porsche today, so thank you
I can't wait for the lotus Gary 👍🏴
Splendid 💯
👏👏👏brilliant
Can’t wait to see how you bond with the Porsche v the Lotus Gary. Had a few Porsche’s but never had a Lotus - what have I been missing! Be good to get “old Toms” thoughts on the same after years wheeling both. He clearly has very good taste. Great episode.
THANKS
Great video, thanks Gary. Look forward to the next one, love 928s
Been waiting for this one for ages. It didn’t disappoint in-depth and well filmed as normal👌
Pure meditation … great job
Liked immediately.... and saving for after work. 👍👍👍
Great update. Glad to see some assistants in the form of pugs too!
Another well shot video with plenty of “how to” tips. Thank you.
Excellent video. Loved the brick and pipe especially! Real world resto at it’s finest.
Agreed.
Enjoyable as always. Really looking forward to the repaint video
Good advise regarding the shock springs Gary, looking forward to seeing some Elite restoration, they are a very rare sight these days.
Brilliant work as usual, BUT!!! It’s the wrong shock as Karsten already said. GT were identified by option code 474 and it meant the car had gas pressurised Boge Sport shocks which are always red and are still available from OPC! Don’t leave it like that - the Sachs grey isn’t matched to the GT only springs. Sorry that it’s not great news, but it’s worth being done right!
Hi although grey it’s an original Boge shock from Porsche. Are you saying the only one specified for the GT is the red sports one? Or are there 2 types, one sports one normal? Regards.
I discovered your channel recently and love all your videos I saw so far. The only thing I would change is the classical music in the background since I find it a bit depressing in the Porsche 928 GT videos. Is it only me?
😅
I believe Porsches of this era had no clear coat from the factory yet.
So do I. Any clearcoat has been added later due to rectification of scrapes or repairs..
Gary, great videos I am really enjoying them all. I also enjoy the quirky music in them. Could you tell me the name of the beautiful piano piece you use.
Enjoying seeing the 928 getting restored..thanks..
Great video. I hate to pick holes but… 😀. as well as getting right into that rust, probably with what we used to call a “skirfer”, you probably also know that you should feather off the edges a bit more and really smooth them out as much as possible to make sure that there are no edges that might lift and to make the transition from paint to bare metal as smooth and progressive as possible. Less work for the primer and any filler to do and less chance of any sinking. I guess sinking is less of a problem these days, but it’s an old habit 😀 I guess it’s some OCD, and I know you’ve just probed the area a s a first look, but I had to say something, probably just for myself 😅 always loved the 928s Keep em coming 👍🏻
Thanks paul. Of course this is just the first buzz off demonstrating the machine. I’m a good painter so don’t despair!! Regards.
@@classic.obsession that’s what I thought, but I was just itching to feather it off 😀
I remember we always had problems undoing the bolts on my 928 S4. The issue is that down here in Devon all the country lanes are covered in cow muck and when that gets into the treads you’ve got no chance - that acid works fast!
Awesome thanks for the video Gary 👌 wish they were a little longer 🤞
Hey Gary, another good video. Yes, those Mirka sander kits are the dogs. I wish I could have afforded one when I was doing all my sanding. I have an air DA, but they knock the hell out of the compressor, which as you say annoys the neighbours and the wife! The original paint would have been single stage 2 pack. Some pro painters still default to this for certain colours, particularly reds, yellows, oranges etc. Personally, I would not go to the bother of clearcoating the old paint. If you were to magnify the old paint finish, you would see that it has gone porous over the years, and the deep pores will now be full of silicones and other contaminants from previous compounding and polishing. You can only lightly sand it if you want to keep the colour intact, so there is a strong chance of micro-bubbling and poor adhesion of the clearcoat. Bite the bullet, repaint the whole car in basecoat and clearcoat, job done. My son has a flame red Astra Sri turbo, a really bad colour for fading, I repainted that car with Valspar basecoat and HB Body clearcoat about 7 years ago, it sleeps out in all weathers and it has not faded one bit, it still looks like new.
THe Porsche 928GT is one of my favourite cars, along with my old Maserati 3200GT :) Great job Gary, I was waiting on this update. Can't wait for the finished result.
Really enjoying this restoration, a pleasure to watch!
Great work Gary, such a huge amount of graft. You'll need to change the shocks to the Koni or Bilstein versions. You couldn't tell because of the rust but that was an adjustable height coil over shock that you took off and hence one of the perches had an internal thread. Best of luck!!
Yes, you may be right. I was under the impression that the shocks were an option and grey were the standard option and considering I’m not going to be taking the car on track days that the grey ones would be more than adequate. Regards.
@@classic.obsessionBest of luck, you might get away with using the standard type if it sits nice and level. Cheers, Giles
Didn’t expect that the 928 will need so much service. The body has quite some rusty spots as it wasn’t washed over the years. Good luck with all the work. 😊😊
Great work Gary - wondered when the Porsche was going to make an appearance ! Wonderful episode as always and quite theraputic as a few people have already said ! Cheers, Stew
Lovin your videos Gary, I used to restore classic cars in my younger years then later build 200 mph supercars and racecars…. Great life…. I so relate to your adventures… I love your format very calming in what is a manic world….. keep them coming…. I spent a great day in the garage today ..! Perfect….. 🍺👍
Great video Gary 👍🏻😀
Hi Gary, maybe best to give the porker a full hit on the paint? From experience, painting a good few of those babies usually in Guards red the paint match is achievable for daytime presentation but shows up real bad under streetlights in the form of metamerism which is pretty bad to live with. This Ferrari 328 GTB (Rosso Corsa) I’m just doing is mint in the daytime but chess board metameric nighttime..hence trim strip and full hit ..sorted.Cheers,keep up the good work.
Loving your work Gary. As a fellow red I'm sure you're enjoying our start to the season as well. Long may that and your great content continue.
Plus United lost 😀😆
Front wings and bonnet are aluminium. Doors, roof, rear wings and hatch are steel. With the number of small defects to address you may end up just painting the whole car. Looks like the shock that came off the car is a Koni but you are putting on a stock shock, likely a Boge. This is a GT model which may have had sport suspension so this may be a mismatch of stiffness.
i was about to say -- then you said it, need to replace and rejuvenate both sides at the same time.
Truly fascinating and absorbing to watch! Recently i was watching a video on restoring a Rolls Royce Silver Spirit and like you he was using spring compressors, and making clear the risks associated with them. Although he was clearly not the experienced master tech/bodyshop expert that you're, your removal of the dent in the front wing was fantastic to watch!
Getting quite a collection of Liverpool red cars there Gary. 😂😂😂
Hi john. Never been a big fan of red cars but I suppose you just have to take the cookie whichever way it crumbles!! Regards..
A great start. I'm looking forward to seeing this restoration progress.
Underrated cars.
Can’t wait to see it painted
Love this channel and this car in particular.
The soothing piano music is perfect - ahhhh....😊
but that colliery sounding brass audio - aaaaarghh! 😂
Fly Fishing by JR Hartley...
Such a cool channel Love it.
Great video,my favourite Porsche 👍🏼
If you intend to clear coat over the top of the single stage after cut and polishing it you would then need to sand it again(for adhesion)before clearing it and it’s going to be getting thin and maybe going through especially in the edges and crevices where it’s already thin from new.
Great video and project. I have an 88 and just redid the springs because I inverted the adjustable collar 😅. Consider Koni 8240s for your GT as this would be have the correct ones over the grey Boge/Sach ones and also reset ride height to 175mm when you redo the alignment and bits. Cheers!
Somehow therapeutic to watch. Good to see the 928GT getting some love. Could I ask why you don't use copper or nylon mallets in a few instances? I like seeing the other vehicles lurking in the background such as the Elite under the cover. You also have the same green deckchairs as me lol. Anyway nice work and I look forward to the next installment
Hi Gary, totally enjoyed that video. Looking forward to seeing more. The red rolls will be the next big project? Thank you for the video. Have a great day mate. Ken Lord nz 😊
I have to say the rust isn’t too bad, considering it’s age. I would just love to be working on a Porsche 928… one day
It’s not too bad. The floors and interior are spotless. Little bit rear of near side sill and surface bits here and there. Should scrub up nicely. Regards.
YES ! Awesome ! ❤
Alfa Spider resto next week but I’ll have a couple more on the GT out by the end of the month. Regards.
Love watching your videos Gary , call me sceptical but the red paint on the top will be pink again in no time at all unfortunately.
