  • The 2024 VinFast VF 8 ($53,600 starting in Canada, $46,000 starting in the US), is a brand new ground up EV from a young new automaker out of Vietnam. The VF8 is their mid-size two-row crossover SUV, and it boasts a strong range of 425 km (264 miles) in the base Eco trim. In the Plus trim with the performance package it claims 391 km (243 miles) and reaches a healthy 402 horsepower and 457 lb ft of torque. But how is it to drive and live with on a day-to-day basis? Thomas and James are excited to drive their first VinFast vehicle. We hope you enjoy the episode! And then subscribe, silly.
Huge thank you @NoFreeRePhils and the Layos Family for letting us feature their VinFast!
And thank you to Naveen for bringing out his Tesla Model Y performance!

In 2020 Vinfast purchased “Lang Lang” Holden’s old test facility from GM, with the intent on doing suspension, braking calibration and refinement etc. Then less than 12 months later they decided against this and sold Lang Lang at a loss. The throttle response is wack, the safety features and driver assists are downright bad and dangerous, the car feels every bit of its almost 6000 pounds (how?), and the suspension is literally nauseatingly bad. This car needed probably a couple of years of R&D, optimization, and refinement. Had a few Uber rides in a Vinfast EV just recently. The country is justifiably proud of the Vinfast brand. They are also determined to.improve upon it. My concern was how the plastics and accessories would handle temps that swing in Canada from -40 to +40C. Warping, cracks, squeaks and rattles seem the least of the worries. Its not ready for prime time in NA but its a big hit in Vietnam and a big step up from the Honda Dream scooter with its 110cc single cylinder 4 stroke motor. Now there is a utility vehicle! Hauls anything including up to 5 passengers. You have to admire the people of Vietnam. Hard working, ambitious and innovative.

Just a few words for those who still don't know about Vinfast, a company from Socialist Viet Nam. In the period of 10 years, Vingroup / Vinfast has ventured into many hi-tech businesses and failed miserably. They had to stop the mobile business after about 2 years. They had to stop the TV business after about 2 years. They had to stop assembling petrol cars after 3 years while other car companies like Toyota, KIA in Viet Nam are still doing well. They also had to sell the chain of supermarkets. As a car company, Vinfast has no technology and no reputation. Their level is at assembling, not manufacturing. They imports parts, compo and assemble them into finished products. In Viet Nam, Vinfast has been struggling to sell cars to break even and made losses year in year out. It's likely that they will fold before the promised five-year warranty runs out. The only thing that keeps them afloat is the real estate business, where in Viet Nam, with the political connection and corruption you can get into many lucrative housing projects. There have been a lot of land grabs in Socialist Viet Nam, where thousands of families lost their houses and land. So why all the EV noises by massive advertising?

Unlike most commenters here who have never driven one, I was seriously considering purchasing one, and did several test drives. Its actually a good looking sporty vehicle, with dual motor at the same price as single motor Tesla. Its interior has far more features than Tesla. However, it is their first EV, and it has kinks to work out. Their Batteries are large and heavy, but do not get the same range and efficiency they should. They know they are still in learning mode, and this is a darn good entry EV for them. If tesla came out with this same car in 2013, it would have been heralded as groundbreaking. 10 years later, not so much. But it is not as bad as many commenters here are saying or even these reviewers made it out to be. I agree Vinfast should have treated this model as their "loss leader" to break into the market and sell in the $45k Cdn range instead of $60k, and the people would have been far more forgiving. Considering all are manufactured in Vietnam Im pretty sure it could have still been borderline profitable.

A subjective and constructive creticism, I would love for Vinfast's management to see this.
Generally, I don't think VF is that bad as it's their first venture into the EV, but they sure do rush it too much. But the price range for their car is very questionable, if anything, it's downright just bad price even in the local market.
I do hope they do real improvement from here on out, because besides all of the bad point, they have some real good looking cars.
But first and foremost that they need to improve on, as it is the most important aspect of all EV IMO, is the range.
For anyone curious, check out Tom Peng, he tested all VF models from e34, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and none of them reached 300km on full charge.

As a Viet, I can understand why that car behaves like that.
The assist: Consumers in Vietnam love a car that packs with option and safety features. We can literally sacrifice driving feel for a blindspot monitoring feature. And not only that, the safety features on that car must warn you like they are insecure about everything on the road just like us when we go for a ride in the city (Seriously, our traffic is horrendous compared to yours, it’s like India’s traffic, but worse).
The suspension: I agree, it’s soft. But in Vietnam, it’s for the best. We didn’t have the facilities nor the highway that was as good as the Canadian or the American, European? Not even close. Bumpy roads, poor quality roads, it’s like whenever a baby is born, another pothole appears. Even the highways are a bit rough. So we need a softer suspension to deal with those kinds of issues. Aside, we mainly drive our cars in the city at 20 or 35 mph (60 is max if we go on a highway, but not too often), so it’s not a big deal.
Delay gas pedal: This one? Well, idk, maybe they’ll patch it up one day. But as I said, consumers in Vietnam don’t give a sht about driving experience at all… Maybe not yet. Becuz over here, people who could afford a car like the VF8 (about 62k-69k USD in the country) generally are middle aged or old people with lots of money, and they don’t drive like BMW drivers, so a small bit of delayed gas pedal is no big deal.
If you think these people buy this car out of curiosity? Could be, but is much like Infiniti G35 or G37 stories: Normal people get to experience faster acceleration and a slightly heavier steering wheel with a Tesla-like interior.
One more thing, Vietnam’s people consider cars as a huge asset (we generally have lower income from the average Southeast Asia and car taxes so high it makes a Camry considered as a luxury car), not a toy. We only care about how smooth or gentle the car is, or how spacious and full of tech. Or just simply care about how big it looks and have that luxury, “daddy” design. But I do suggest you guys visit Vietnam to enjoy the real scenery and try the entire Vinfast lineup for yourself, maybe you can change your mind. I highly recommend you guys test drive the VF5, It’s a small CUV but damn, these things could handle much better than those big boat Vinfast cars.

This is why Vietnamese car manufacturers can't improve. Vietnamese don't want to face reality. All they do is make stupid excuses. It's quite funny that most Vietnamese people who are sugarcoating Vinfast never had owned or even driven any car before but making excuses on behalf of Vinfast. If what you said is true, the best-selling car should have been the Vinfast in the Vietnam market right? However, it isn't of course.
Seems like the people there are brainwashed by the Vinfast or even by the government and the Vietnamese media. I heard that Vinfast even forced influencers not to say any bad words in compensation for invitations or financial support.
As long as the Vietnamese people sugarcoat Vinfast blindly, the company will never be able to make a solid product.

That’s a bummer. I hope they are able to work it out. I like rooting for an underdog lol

This auto maker is still young, give it a few years, I am sure it will take off.

So when I first saw this car come out and people in this hemisphere were reviewing it, I thought - what the hell were they thinking? But having been to Vietnam for the first time very recently and witnessing their culture around driving….some of this stuff actually makes sense for over there 😂😂

It is a fairly nice looking car but oh my god, this car is unfinished. Which is a shame because I love to see this brand succeed.

20:09 this car seems to be best summed up by the fact that the company's name is 7 letters long and they couldn't even be bothered to line up letter 4 with the center of the logo on the tailgate.

Model Y's back seat is one of the worst I've ever sat in. I'm surprised you said a 6'6" can fit "comfortably" in it.
