I purchased the Speetimer back in June and I couldn't be more happy with this purchase. The primary factor in my decision, which I had debated for some time, was specicifically the case size and wearability that Teddy mentioned in this video. I also lean toward the Seiko in the area of style just a bit, but they are both great looking watches IMO. I do love the history of this Bulova model and would love to have it in my collection just for that reason.. it is really cool, but the overall history of Seiko as well as my love for the brand helped me get over that hump in my decision making process as well. To anyone reading this I had both watches in hand on several occasions prior to my purchase, and I can honestly say imo there is no real winner between these two pieces. It all comes down to personal preference, they're about as even a comparison as two watches could ever be. I will say that owning this Seiko has been wonderful, and at this price point (or any price point really lol) it's a lovely piece to have on wrist, and outside of the lackluster loom design I have no other complaint whatsoever. I'm certain if I owned the Bulova my feelings would be the same towards it as well. If your in a position that your deciding between the watches I don't believe you will be dissapointed either way you go. 🙂

You still have to change the capacitor/batt every four to five years on the Solar Seiko. It is used to store power from sun. Without it, it quits. Like the Seiko Kinetics (which I also own). Sorry….
Bulova Precisionist line like this watch, batteries last more than 4 years. I own the Pilot on this show. Bought from Teddy. Love it. I have 5 year old dress look Precisionist which I just change the battery. Dial is amazing. Is off max 2 seconds a year.

Seiko SSC911 owner - I found a local AD that price matched online at the time (April '23), for $540 as an 1 yr anniversary gift from my wife to me 😂 This is the most expensive watch I own, so take that as you will.
    1. It is absolutely my favorite of my collection! Probably 75-85% wear status rn. My wrist is 6.5", so the 41mm was exactly what I was looking for.
    2. I love the red accent for the chrono hand.
    3. This is my first quarts watch, I am more of an automatic kind of guy. Mechanical Engineer. But I love the implementation of solar + me being lazy with a 10+ battery life horizon.
    4. Aesthetically, I love the way it looks, feels, and tells the time on my wrist. What else can you ask for.
I don't own any of the other watches, but as a SSC911 owner, love love love love it!

    • @spacehopper77
      @spacehopper77 2 місяці тому

@@user-xe4yb5xc8tnot true from my experience. I have owned a Bulova precisionist 98B267 with the same 262kHz movement for two and a half years and have not had to replace the battery yet. Although I suspect if you use the chromatograph a lot that will probably drain the battery quicker but the high frequency quartz beat is not. I love my 98B267 on a blue strap as I know when I put it on in the morning it is at the correct time. From my experience setting it twice a year when daylight saving time changes, the accuracy is phenomenal, single digit seconds a year. So much so that when setting my mechanical watches I use the Bulova as the reference time. Anyway, even if I did have to buy a battery every six months, which I don’t, I would still appreciate having such a world class accurate movement in my collection.

I went for the bulova Snoopy. Simply put I found it a lot better made than the seiko which felt "chintzy" and much lower grade materials all round. If I'm having a quartz, I want the best I can get for the money and the movement accuracy was also a no brainer.
It's not as if seiko can't make good quartz movements either, some of the grand seiko movements are amazingly accurate and I hear they actually grow their own quartz crystals too so I don't know why they can't make a comparable movement to rival the one in the bulova.

Excellent comparison Teddy! Very timely too as I am considering both of these watches. I think I am going with Seiko SBDL085/SSC813. Deciding factors for me are the case size and the fact that I want a black/white Panda. Add the solar functionality, price at present, and the fact that I like the look, I think it is a pretty good value proposition as a daily beater.

It wears much larger than i expected due to the high and wide crystal. One thing that I wish your reviews would cover is to rate how resistant the watches are for daily wear, specifically the wear resistance of the materials for the crystal, case and band. Are you able to measure the hardness of the band and case? Maybe you can team up with Project Farm UA-cam channel to develop a series of tests to simulate normal or even heavy duty wear? I mean, is there anything worse than saving up for a watch, buying it, then a week later it has scratches all over it? Not good. Anyway, thanks for your video, really enjoyed it!

I’ve owned the SSC813 almost since release. When I picked it out of the case I had no interest in a chronograph, but I thought in person it looked great. The heft and size were just right for me,and the contrast and layout just worked for me. On an intellectual level I was more interested in the Lunar Pilot I tried on the same day, as it certainly has a more interesting history. But the flatter crystal, overall layout, etc just didn’t do it for me. I’d advise anyone to get both on the wrist, what you feel is an X factor for which you just can’t account in advance. My Seiko runs about 3.5 seconds fast per month. The large sweeping chronograph hand its great for timing patients’ heart rates at work. I wear it 5 days a week to work (physician) and the case and crystal still look new. The bracelet and clasp have scratched as expected. The 24 hour hand is quite useless. The tachymeter is accurate as tested at highway speeds. I’m very happy for the ~$530 sale price.

I love both of these. Specifically the panda and blue panda you used here. That said, I think the Bulova shoulda won this on your chart. Primarily, the Cost category. While the Bulova is a little more expensive (barely), you’re paying for the better movement. IMO, the last category shoulda been a tie at least, if not given outright to the Bulova. The same accuracy in a year as Seiko’s in a month? Come on, man.
Anyway. Thanks for another great video. I’d love to see more of these heads up battles. Preferably one without your beloved Seiko? 😂

I really love my Bulova. Got this out of nothing. Never wore a watch that costs more than 200 bucks.
Then I got that and always enjoy it, when looking at my wrist. But the Seiko looks really nice as well!

I got both of them. Love the panda dial on the Seiko. But the 39 mm is tough for me to read. Getting older and my eyesight is not what it used to be. Also,--for me--the Seiko bracelet is a bit uncomfortable. So I switched to a bund strap. Similarly, the Lunar Pilot with the paddle pushers is just fun. The Bulova comes with a leather strap that feels light and comfortable. You can't go wrong with either the Seiko Speedtimer or the Bulova Lunar Pilot.

I love the look of th seiko, it's classic and I seriously nearly pulled the trigger on it. Then I saw the 50th Anniversary edition lunar pilot and watched the remastered Apollo 15 documentary and fell in love with the history. I love the gold and grey combination of the 50th Anniversary and the grey leather strap. I've seen there is a NASA replica Velcro strap for this as well for around 20USD. I might add this for occasional use.

I was a teenager during Apollo and own a 1974 vintage Omega Speedmaster so I had to get the Lunar Pilot. My wrists are 7.5 inches so I can carry off the 45.5mm version but I’m very tempted to trade it in for the new, smaller version.

I have been looking at the Seiko ❤ for a while and Will buy it soon. I think the solar power is really cool, combined with a slight retro design does it for me. Also the Seiko looks gorgeous on a Brown leather strap.
I disagree w. Teddy on the points for movement because of solar power, power indikator and the date which the Bulova cant match.

I love the Lunar Pilot. The face depth and detail, pusher and crown design, and case shape are beautiful. Combined with the history they create a watch that feels unique and very good value for money. I have a smaller wrist and find it very comfortable and actually love the overall size on the wrist.

I had the Bulova, and I enjoyed it for a few years, however I recently sold it for the Speedtimer. I like the proportions of the case, the size and placement of the subdials, and the black/white panda dial, and polished faux ceramic tachymetre of the Seiko just appeal to my eye more. Both are amazing value for money watches though

Fits with everything.. and had so many compliments on it. I got the panda version like in this video. The 39mm looked so small on my wrist so I picked the new version. And so happy with it

I bought the speedtimer in the blue dial variant. Very happy with it once id got used to ( my first chrono ) the second hand not moving like I expected, The only disap[pointment is the date window is to small and deep set so very difficult for a presbyopic 60+ yr old to see . In all its a great watch just wish date was easier to see

The size will not be too big. I may have larger wrist than you. However, my pilot would work very well on your wrist. Looks natural. Get the snoopy/panda version. Will be killer on your wrist. Wife and ladies like the look of the blue leather strap that comes with the package.. Better than the SS. I like both. They are easy to change with the quick disconnect. The blue leather with the white dial/blue trim is killer. Gets looks from everyone. And, when you take it off to show it off, the case back tribute to the moon watch, always get extra respect. The dial is amazing. Better than Tissot, Hamilton, Oris, or others. So too is the amazing movement/quality across the features.

The Bulova advantages are very attractive, and had they a 40mm version it might be the winner for me.
However... I love my Speedtimer (despite the useless 24 hr subdial, the unreadable date, and only 2 microadjusts).
It is always a joy to wear and look at. The black (deep blue, actually) sunken subdials look great against the off-white dial. It is distinctive from a distance. Solar...always ready to go.

The Bulova has a bit more class, but at their diameter, it's not for me. That Speedtimer seems to be a bit underrated. It's a great all-around watch. i owned it for about 6 months and enjoyed it (it was getting ignored for my Daytona, which was probably unfair to the Speedtimer). But the guy who bought it from me, even now, many months later, loves it so much and sends random pics with it as he travels a bit. Great comparison vid, Teddy!

I have both watches. The 41mm of the Speedtimer. Both are great watches overall. The seiko, IMO, has a cooler look to it. It’s also just slightly more comfortable on my wrist. The Bulova is still a very cool looking watch, don’t get me wrong. It has a really cool case shape with those lugs, and of course the amazing history with Apollo 15 commander Dave Scott. That means a lot to me, being a big science nerd. The Lunar Pilot is crazy accurate. I’m currently doing a long term timing run to see exactly how accurate it it. However my speedtimer gains 0.3 spd consistently, over a 3 month timing run. Also the Bulova has better dial legibility. I can’t really say which is a better watch as I like both for different reasons.

If you want to look like you have an Omega Speedmaster, get the Bulova. If you prefer more of a Rolex Daytona vibe, get the Seiko. I have a SSC991, and I really like it as a so-called beater for days that I am not wearing my Omega Seamaster Diver 300. It's comfortable, looks great and provides a lot of style for not a lot of money (love the silver dial with red hands). I thought the 800 series Speedtimer was too small, but if you're into smaller watches, then it's a good option.

Not all of the points in the table are equally important and not to same people, so certainly should never be equally weighted as here. For me, weightage would go towards case, bracelet/clasp, dial and movement, any given day. Most probably for 90% of people. If I look at just those, Bulova wins in all. The rest doesn't really matter that much (for me).

The movement on the Bulova does it for me. Most of the Bulova range does little for me with most watches containing the Miyota quartz or mechanical workings with the exception of their 262khz range. Seiko are simply awesome with an extremely complete range and high end offerings.

im a huge bulova fan, and would love to add a lunar pilot to my collection, but i have a hard time justifying it when i was gifted a citizen carson chronograph that has similar case dimensions to the 43mm bulova, and offers eco drive for around the 5-600$ range, often in the high 400$ on sale.

Love my Speedtimer. I really like the look of the blue Bulova, but didn’t like the way it looked on my wrist. I have a 7.25 inch wrist and could pull it off, but just didn’t like the way it sat. The only reason I’d buy one is because of its connection to Dave Scott and the moon. Would like to see a 39mm-40mm. Be more apt to buy one at that size.

The Bulova is definitely pays more tribute to the original it borrows it's name from my which I really like. But I did pick up a speed timer. It's a shame it doesn't resemble the speedtimer it borrows it's name from, but seiko did give consumers a design that does speak to a lot of consumers. Love that they are using 62mas and MM influenced case designs. While the bracelets aren't the best on the market but so much better than any other seiko in this price range.

When I got my Citizen Titanium Pro Master I decide to visit a Seiko Boutique store and ask about the Speedtimer wearing a shiny Citizen. Was given the red carpet treatment. The design of the Speedtimer Panda appealed to me but was a little shocked at the weight of the watch and realised the new titanium watch I was wearing was spoiling me. The Seiko boutique was also charging full RRP while online authorised dealers were a few hundred cheaper. Had the Speedtimer been available in titanium I could have foolishly bought it online.
I also had a look at the Bulova Lunar Pilot online. For a quartz watch it was pricey. My expectations was at that price range I would want it to be Solar powered and maintenance free. I also found the newer 43mm was more expensive than the 45mm. Possibly in the coming years if the 43mm gets cheaper I could be persuaded to get one purely for the novelty value.
