Why Seiko's SSC819 Chronograph Is Disappointing & The Flightmaster SNA411 Is Still King Under $500

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- I've put off reviewing the Seiko Prospex Speedtimer SSC819 (known by watch enthusiasts and fans as the "Seikona") because in my opinion, nothing beats Seiko's Flightmaster, which costs a fraction of the price. However, there are rumors that the Flighty SNA411 is soon to be discontinued, which begs the question-will the Seikona take the crown as the brand's most affordable chronograph? To answer this, I borrowed one to compare with the Flighty, and in this watch review I analyze its strengths, weaknesses, positives, negatives, the often overlooked history of Seiko's contribution to chronographs, and the design evolution that inspired this Rolex Daytona-esque watch. Is this relatively new Seiko worth the significantly higher price tag? How does it compete with everything else on the market today around the same price? And is this the best new racing chronograph between $500 and $1000? Join me for a close look at this sporty #strapmonster in the studio and out for a spin on a sunny day around Philadelphia's Navy Yard.

@@theurbangentry You know how much we love you, TGV. Great review of the Seikona, btw. Ten thumbs up, and best regards to darling Hugo.
@@theurbangentry How about Seiko Flighty versus Dan Henry 1964 Gran Turismo Chrono or the Dan Henry 1962?
Does the Flight Master have a rapid date 📅 change 🤔 or no?
@@lonewolfemcquade8133 Great question my friend. It has quickset, and the date change near midnight takes around half an hour, much quicker than most entry level Seiko mechanicals that take even a few hours, even more for day/dates. I hope that helps.
TGV is a legend for his lack of snobbery and his appreciation of all aspects of horology. That is one of the main reasons I love this channel so much.
🙌🙌🙌 Thank you Erik, you are an absolute gent and I am deep honored.
Onwards and upwards my friend.

@@theurbangentry I do try my best and thank you. I found your little quip about the Seikona Nick some particularly enjoyable as I am rather a Seiko fan myself.
I have always had a fascination with watches and have had a watch collection since childhood. When I got into it seriously a few years ago UA-cam's watch channels nurtured my interest, and The Urban Gentry spearheaded that journey. Just One More Watch is another channel I regard very highly.
My life went through a great reset lately and now I am dedicating my remaining lifespan to becoming a career Horologist. Your channel is definitely partially to credit and or blame for that :)
Hmmm, I guess he's okay........lol. I agree, everything TGV is strictly a non-snobbery zone.
I guess you didnt see some old videos where he is borderline at best.
@@jiboo6850 I've been a viewer for absolutely donkeys and I think I can recall some hints of snbbery maybe very early on, but they were brought in check and what he produces now is very much a snobbery free zone.
Edifying as always TGV and nothing better on a Sunday evening. I really like the look of the 'affordable' Hamilton chrono but I'm lucky to have in my collection one of the pioneers -- a 1970 Heuer Carrera -- so can't justify being in the market.
Thank you so much Dave. Deffo need to check out the newer Hamilton chronos, long over due. as for Heuer 🔥🔥🔥
Have a great week ahead my friend.

TGV
I love the Heuer originals from the 70's so many kool Autaivas, Carreras and the Camaro. So much better then current Tag Heuer
I bought this watch with a white dial 2 weeks ago and really love it. It fits my wrist so perfectly well, i looks great and fells like a high quality watch.
The mentioned negatives are there, but arguably, or at least for me, a non issue.
- The lume is nice, its just not that many markers. It doesnt bother me because rarely am i in such dark conditions that couldnt read my watch (as long as the hands are lumed).
- The only two things that bother me A LITTLE is the bracelet....which is totaly OK, but the brushing horizontal while the case brushing is vertical. I dont know why they did that, but since you can only see that in some light conditions and the rest of the bracelet is good....i can live with that.
- The 3 o'clock subdial....yes, would have really preffered if they made it a GMT complication...but hey...what watch is absolutely perfect?
All in all...for the significantly discounted price i paid this watch, it is great and i will wear it proud for a long time!
Honestly, with the bracelet it feels like they just took the one they had for something else and attached it here. They indeed use these bracelets for some other models.
It's a beautiful Seiko TGV. So much so that I myself purchased one last year in 2021 for $550 Australian. Felt it was well worth it. Plus I love how the dial display has so much to look at and keep oneself occupied.
Again great review and as always unbiased review. Postscript Philadelphia looks beautiful, the background you choose is perfect for this review.
As always kind regards from Australia.

Great intro! I was not expecting breakdowns first thing in the morning while making my way into London on the Elizabeth line. Another great video!
Incredible Djent Theme for the new intro. Congratulations TGV. Superb as always.
I really like this new Seikona. Thanks for the review. Cheers.
I’ve been dying to see a review from you on this watch can’t wait to finish this video!
Great review TGV. Thank you. I didn't know this watch. I love Seiko too. I just took my SSC017 (solar chrono diver) out of the watch box after a while now, and I'm incredibly happy with it and honeymooning again. Cheers
After hearing you rave about the Flighty, I finally broke down and got one. I am not disappointed, its a new favorite!
Great episode T! It’s nicknamed the Seitona for a reason I guess. It’s ironically a safer bet than a reimagined 6139!!!;) but how amazing would it be to bring back the Pogue!!
The Flighty I don’t wear that often. Think it’s because of how busy the dial is. I only need the time from my watches and maybe it’s the strap width that limits my strap experimentation.
I’d love to know when Seiko design or come up with a new watch whether it’s for the enthusiasts or whether it’s for the non watch geek!?! I guess limited editions are the geek ones! Speak soon!
You always have the best intro by far! And a best comprehensive info of the items presented.
As a former Mayport sailor, it makes me smile to see some of those ships again... I would like to see Seiko reissue the RAF chrono in the Prospex line. No tachymeter, bead blasted case.
Man, this would be a dream.
I recently bought this with the champagne dial for
I got my 7T34 Seiko flighty the predecessor in gold after watching your SOTC of 2019 I believe and have loved it! Great video and content as always!
I bought my first Seiko because of this channel. I had to say it but it's really a quality watch Seiko makes. Now I own 3.
Thank you for another great video TGV! Your videos where you are reviewing a watch and combine it with some outside footage along with your thoughts on other quality products such as that beautiful Carl Friedrik is my favourite! It is always a pleasure to watch your genuine passion for well made products. Can’t wait til your next one!
TGV… I have not watched your videos for a couple of years. The quality of all aspects of your production has increased substantially. Great work, keep rising ( now off the mall for another seiko lol)
Thank you so much, I highly appreciate it.

Your love of the Flightmaster convinced me that that would be the chronograph I'd want, but about the time I began collecting watches, I had vision problems, so I've stayed away from small dial print and indices watches, but nonetheless enjoy seeing the joy that watches that stand the test of time bring to their owners. Thank you.
I personally think the positives outweigh the negatives. However, you're absolutely right that Seiko has too many misaligned markers and too many missed opportunities. Great vid as always, TGV! Great background scenery too! 😁😁😁
👏👏👏 Perhaps I was a little harsh 🤣🤣🤣 I care too much I guess.
Thank you my friend, I'm always happy to hear from you. I hope all is well.

Excellent review TGV. I'll admit that I've been smitten with these since they first came out and it's tempting with some for sale in the $500 range on chrono.
Another great video - I have a Seiko speed timer and I'm over the moon with it - not too bothered with the steel bracelet as I replaced it with a NATO and it looks great. Its probably just me but I'm not a fan of steel bracelets on any watch, cheap or expensive, and never find the fit comfortable - believe me I've tried.
I actually like a 24 hr dial on my watch as I have worked in windowless environments in the past and an am/pm indication has always been very useful.
Good old days; lovely to be born in the 1980’s;)!!! Thanks for the KickStart video of the week!🙏💪🤝
Been looking forward to a video from you TGV! Great start to the week! Thanks!
The intro is epic!!! Keep up the amazing work .
Unconventional Choice for the Intro Music, but very fitting to the Visuals. You really nailed it.

this is the first time i strongly disagree with all the negativses mentioned exept for the lack of loom markers.
great video keep it up
Great Vid. The SeikoTona just came back into stock and I was ready to pull the trigger then the GMT was announced. What to do?
Hello again TGV - watched the F1 earlier, which always sparks my desire for another racing watch. Happy with my Dan Henry ‘62 though!
I hear you on the 24-hour subdial: worst complication ever if you're not an astronaut or a spelunker (or in Canada in November). Bulova and Dan Henry both have a tenths register on their chronos: way cooler and more fun! Thanks, as always, for the stellar show. ✨
Bro, we need 12-hour totalizers.
TGV new videos is the one i always look forward to.
so informative and always showcase some watch gems.
The FlightMaster is one of my favorites too; I love it so much... Is such an iconic watch! Nice video! Ti seguo dall'Italia! 😉
Really great and fair review.
Would love to see a Guinand featured on the channel, especially because you've praised Sinn in the past.
A little over a year ago I purchased the Seiko Flighty and I am soooo glad I did. I paid less than $200, and now you're lucky if you can find it for under $350. Do you think this is going to go the same way of the SKX and be discontinued and then see the prices really skyrocket??
Probably not anytime soon
Opps... I missed your video release because I was glued to the LEGO online shop for the launch of the Classic Space tribute Galaxy Explorer. So I'm saving your video for tomorrow evening. 😊
Thank Klaus, good luck on your lego set, off to google it, sounds fantastic!

A very nice surprise to hear some Djent-riffs in the intro! :) Gr8 vid as always!
I almost bought the panda dial version yesterday and couldn’t find a video review for this one from you sadly..glad I went with the 5KX GMT instead AND it was cheaper which is crazy
Great detailed videol. Whilst the negatives are disappointing sometimes I do think Seiko are caught between a rock and a hard place. Innovative and put the price up, and they get a backlash from some (not all) refusing to pay ("cos it's just a Seiko"). Or stick to the formula of previous decades, keep the cost down, but still get a backlash for not innovating. They are almost paying the price for their success in past decades, and a lot of people refuse to see them on a par with others(even Grand Seiko suffers from this). Having said that the quality control issues of late certainly haven't helped, and that is certainly on themselves. As always thank you for the well produced, informative and entertaining video sir 👍
Your reviews and discussions of the SNA411 lead me to procure it, yesterday. I cannot wait to receive it. Eventually, I would love to obtain a Breitling Navitimer but the Seiko will serve me well in the meantime.
The Breitling Navitimer is the king of luxury pilot watches but the Seiko Flightmaster is not a bad alternative at all.
Hello. Thanks for the review.
I saw the Seiko SSC815P1 with the beautiful blue dial at a local dealer.
Positive:
I really like that design. It has curved glass. It's a good size for me. Seiko has made a power meter, which I have missed from Seiko solar.
Negative:
I'm not into bracelets, I'd like Seiko to come up with an alternative strap and thus a little cheaper.
I'm also not a fan of the 24 hour dial, just the aesthetic, I'd like it to be the date.
The price in Denmark is an average of DKK 5,000. That's about 734 dollars. It is somewhat more expensive than expected. Would love to see it in Titanium for that price. B.R. Steen B
Maybe it's just me and my night owl tendencies but especially on winter weekends the 24 hour dial is appreciated 😭
Excellent video as always. Must admit I sold my own flighty as being so used to field watches I found it too busy. However this seiko is very tempting indeed. All the best.
Great Review! This Channel got me back into watches. Always honest with the right amount of love to the Hobby. Thanks to TGV i‘ m into BulOva and i hope my wife got the wave the fence post right to the Surfboard Chrono A ( Quarz). A Flighty is on my List too. Thanks for the show :-).
Good video. I never gave it any thought until your video. The SNA411 definitely can double as a racing or flight chrono. It does it all. I normally wear my SNA411 on a Leather strap. It has been with me for 10yrs.
Thank you for this. I wish you could do more reviews - your approach is different from other channels that use what's becoming a slightly stale, formulaic approach. The outcome from watching your critique is that I have a feel for the watch - almost like a connection with it - that imo others cant reproduce.
Much love from Blighty; take care.
Always a great welcome to get a video on a Sunday hope every ones weekend went well.
Thanx TGV, excellent background and environment... 🍷🍷🍷
I bought the Seiko Flighty because of your exquisite review. This time I stopped myself from buying the Speedtimer, in spite of its good looks and wearable design, after I watched your well-reasoned review. The lack of lume and the useless AM/PM indicator are both big drawbacks. Many thanks, TGV ! --- Som
Outstanding review sir. Thank you very much for your endeavours. Onwards and upwards. 🙏
TGV, clearly everyone has their own preference and opinion and you do a pretty good job of presenting both sides, both the pro’s and con’s of each watch. I can appreciate your fondness for the Flightmaster. I never personally owned one, however I did own a Seiko SEH010 which I believe was the predecessor to the Flightmaster. It was a great watch. Since selling the SEH010 about 10 years ago, I haven’t owned a chrono. I’ve looked at the Flightmaster. Also...the Citizen Navihawk. To be candid, neither of them really excited me to the point of making a purchase. However, when the new Seiko Speedtimer came out I knew immediately I had to own one. So there you have it....there’s no accounting for personal taste. Everyone enjoys whatever it is that appeals to their own interests.
Lovely macro shots, I miss these type of reviews mate.
Thanks TGV for another educational review of a watch and brand with so much history. I love my Flighty and this new Seiko cannot substitude it. I also enjoy my Yema Ralleygraph and altough it had no ticking seconds and saphire crystal, it surpasses this Seiko. Missed opportunity as you said...
I just hope for a Seiko Commander Pogue recreation one day faithful to the original. It's the one Seiko I want the most with that beautiful gold dial. I'm actually surprised it hasn't happened yet and automatic of course like the original
i hope for a modern remake of the pogue , with a hi beat column wheel chronograph movement.
🤞🤞🤞🤞 Yeh, it's a movement issue I think, they simile don't have a new movement to fit that single sub dial and date/day layout but I agree, so surprised it has not happened yet.
Thank you my friend.

Next year is the 50th anniversary of Pogue’s Skylab mission. Just sayin…
@@beren1hand That would be perfect 👌 and a missed opportunity if Seiko doesn't do it
@@beren1hand would be a GREAT (and quite logical) move to make for them to reissue it.
Great review as always. One of these days you should review a high end casio like the oceanus or their jdm lineage line which are awesomely priced for what they offer. The LIW-M700 gives a timer, alarm, second time zone, chronograph and radio time with 100m water resistance aaand sapphire aaand solar for under 300 dollars. people should know about these..

Great review. I have this Seiko, and I have the one just recently released that’s slightly bigger. I get it. But… I’m okay with the 24 hr dial, because it reminds me of the Daytona Cosmograph. They NEED to re release the Pogue with the gold dial. There are so many counterfeit ones being purchased. There’s DEFINITELY a market for them…
This is the only watch channel I bother to watch and I feel like I have been on a journey with this channel from watching it over the years.

I would be very sad if the content stopped one day as I love nothing more than grabbing a morning coffee and seeing if there is new content on this channel!
Thank you so much Thomas, you have no idea what that means to me, you made my day!

Got my flighty a few years back from Long Island Watch, I really thought I had missed out on the opportunity in getting my hands on one.
have you compare to SBDL095 that has bigger lum ? Also compare the Speedtimer automatic vs the quatz?
Been watching your content for a while; another great take on a beautiful Seiko!
May I recommend that you incorporate timestamps in your videos? On a slower day, I do enjoy just listening to whole videos, especially since your story-telling and presentation is great. But the timestamps would be exceedingly useful for all other days when I’d like to jump around the video a bit to get to the parts I’d be most interested in.

Hey TGV nice shots at the Phila Navy Yard. Love going down there and seeing the ships, old buildings and aircraft carrier. So sad to see the JFK sitting there rusting after all it has done serving our country. TGV I am referring to the panda version and I think that there is no other option for a new watch under 1000 euros and especially solar from a brand with history. two other watches come to my mind : yema rallygraf and zodiac grandrally. the economic option is :dan henry 1964 or 1962. what do you think?
I would like Seiko to do thinner chronographs, 9-10mm instead of 13, like they already did. A 30 min register would be more readable too. I would like a reissue of 6139-8020 too. Thanks for the video.

As always from TGV another excellent review. I own 2 Seiko's a Solar Chronograph and the Flightmaster on a Bison rubber strap which is really comfortable and gets more wrist time than any other of the watches in my modest collection.
I also wanted to buy the Seitona but instead found a jewel of a watch which is the OceanX speed racer ii which is a great homage watch to the Paul Newman Daytona and value for money.

eview!! I personally wear the seiko solar panda watch with (v172) movement with an a alarm (which is a little to quiet for me). I really love solar watches because there is no hassle with it compared with automatic movements. Stay healthy and well as always!! Thank you!! (Nicholas)
Hi TGV
Like this Speedtimer, especially the fact that it’s solar powered. But it doesn’t quite have the charm of the Flightmaster with its yellow hands and all...
Seems like Seiko has tried to make a more elegant/timeless watch - anonymity is the price to pay. More madness, please😆
Too bad with the shortcuts.
Think you’re right that it’s better to go all the way and have a higher price tag. This is hardly going to be a super selling watch anyway, and those interested will probably pay a bit more...
Wish Seiko would make a solar powered rerelease of the Pogue - and without making the case bigger as so many companies does with their rereleases...
Keep up the good work👍
The opening of this video was badass👍
I got my ssc the panda one the day it came out from my ad. He hooked me up early! My favorite watch! Even if it’s battery it still one of my new favorites now. Sadly my 1521 polished sits in the box more :(

@@theurbangentry Thank you Tristano 👍
I bought the panda. The only thing that bothered me was the sub dials look dark blue instead of black. I guess its hard to make black solar module screens.
Indoors and low light conditions doesn’t make those solar panels obvious but in sunlight, it’s very obvious.. It’s the only chorno that I have and being a Seiko, it is reliable too…I love it
As always nice review of a very nice watch. However, I think i missed it.. what is the lug size?
Thank you, it is 20mm

I recently bought this watch in the panda configuration for US$350. It's a brilliant watch on the wrist with excellent proportions and feel. I don't think any of the negatives raised here are a big deal at all. Sure, more lume would be great but I have a Seamaster for that. Just get the Seitona but make sure you look for a good deal.
I just bought this watch with champagne dial for £395 at an AD new and for this price it is amazing value, I love it!
Awesome video. I have the gold flighty SNA 414P, on the gold bracelet of course. I also have a prospect chronograph, That I can’t find the reference number. It’s larger about a 43 or 44, it is also solar and also has the three subdials. It is busier than the flighty, It has some gold trim and came on a brown leather/alligator band. They are two of my favorite watches and I own more than 30 Seiko’s. I did not particularly like the watch in this video and never felt a desire to purchase it.Thanks TGV SEIKO IS KING !!!
Cool intro! Newer isn’t always better.
The fightmaster hands down has it
And it’s still in the affordable category
I have mine
Well pointed.good job ol'man
Honestly I couldn't disagree with you more on this watch, I have the blue and love it. The 24 hr indicator is a massive miss but the rest of the design really comes together. It looks like a sophisticated chronograph not like the 'toy-ish' cheaper ones seiko makes. The bracelet is very uncomfortable so that stays in the box!
Thank you for the feedback, I see this is your first comment on the channel, welcome! I have yet to try the blue version, so I really could not speak about that version, as you can understand, it would be very unfair to speak about a watch I have not tried., But as I said in this review, this version is a great watch, especially when it comes to quality, despite the many shortcomings and if you enjoy it, that is all matters! As for the "toy-ish" ones, I have yet to try any of cheaper offerings, again I can not speak for those, my flightmaster and this speedmaster I think have me covered! But I will look out for this blue version you have, I wonder if it will be a different experience.
Best regards and again, welcome!
TGV
I completely agree. I have the white one and absolutely love it. Feels like a watch north of $1000 on the wrist and it's great for every occasion. Totally agree on the 24 hr indicator, that and the amount of lume are my only complaints. I have much more expensive watches in my box that I think about wearing but always end up wishing I was wearing this. Absolutely love it.
@@theurbangentry I have the panda and it's pretty great. I agree with what he said above. They call them opinions for a reason though. Hope you are well!
I have the sand or gold dial version, I have to say I love it. Sure the 24hr dial is a bit useless and the bracelet while a massive improvement over my other Seiko’s is still a bit jangly, but I bought it primarily for how it looks and that along with the way it wears leaves me with no regrets and I find myself wearing it often. The bracelet could be so much better if the tolerance of the pusher in the clasp was tighter, that’s a little frustrating because it seems so obvious.
Yep - agree entirely. I have the same and seem to wear it a lot. Looks good on a black and sand nato. 🙂
Nice that there are good aftermarket bracelet options if you’re interested! Strapcode has an oyster and jubilee style. Uncle Seiko has also announced he will be releasing bracelet options in the near future.
@@CanttReed I just could not get a proper fit from the stock bracelet and ordered a StrapCode Super JUB II jubilee. Now a perfect fit. I also picked up a sailcloth in black with white stitching. I like that strapcode did taper to 16mm at the clasp.
Love my golden panda! I actually think the gold dial is the most cohesive design. All the hype was about the white dial, but the off black solar dials and the off-white handset didn't look great to me.
I hear you on the 24-hour subdial. Very occasionally I find it useful when setting the date, to know if the next 12 o'clock will be noon or midnight. Rest of the time, it's a distraction that makes me look at it only to find it's not the one I want to look at.
