Piece of advice: Take that top cover off now, get measurements on it, and put it back on. Heck, go ahead and create a 3D model of it. That way you can get a CNC machining shop to make you another if/when it breaks.

While ranching is an incredibly noble trade, without the blacksmith making tools and sundry other items, it is incredibly difficult to run a ranch.

There was something uniquely satisfying about this episode. Maybe it was all the creative problem solving. Maybe it's the fact that you hired a talented smith in this time when most companies have shut down. This episode made me excited to get back out there and start hammering away at life. Alec, I really hope that you see this.
You need to depth that gear as well as align it otherwise it will destroy itself.
Get some gear marking compound and check the contact pattern, that will tell you if your alignment and depth is good or not.
Hey Alec, I know you probably won’t ever see this but I just wanted to say that you and will have really inspired me. I’m 15 years old and I’ve always wanted to blacksmith and I never thought I could but your videos made me believe that I can. So now once quarantine ends, my dad and I are going to build my very first forge and I’m so excited! My dream is to one day work with you

but beware, I've worked 15 years on one of these (and even bigger ones):
Normally under the anvil of the hammer there should be a counterweight 20 times the weight of the hammer bear.
You have to make sure that the hammer bear hits perfectly vertical.
Very important: In our case the engine was also with a belt-bully next to the machine, because if the engine is shifted by the vibrations, the whole transmission of the hammer is immediately broken!
Further you have to be quite sure that the hammer has no cracks, otherwise everything flies around your ears
That fiber gear *should* protect the gearbox.
Should. Yeah, I know.
Good point about looking for cracks in things that could put shrapnel in the air, for sure. The old cracked motor was a serious sign that something *else* in the machine isn't aligned correctly and topping out is another.
I really don't want these guys finding out in the worst possible way what else is not up to snuff in the machine.
I mean, it's great to see younger guys full of enthusiasm doing this but they really need a graybeard or two that knows what to look at before turning that big mother on.
Fortunately there seem to be a few in the comments willing to make suggestions...

My first thought when they started hammering that 2x4 was, "Wow, they turned a 2x4 into a broom!"
Its amazing to see how far down the rabbit hole black smithing goes, from my simple, hand bellowed, charcoal forge all the way up to a 9ft tall powerhammer

They should make the face a little more aggressive, maybe red eyes, sharp teeth with a huge, dark smile (not as in the color), and eye brows in the mad-like position

@@EmilFrydendal Right, my point being, if he accidentally taps your finger and you drop or bobble it, it will only burn you in addition to having your digit(s) smashed. Pretty sure some gloves or a clamp would've been prudent. Not that I haven't done similar or worse.
Probably a good idea to put a steel plate in that cut-out for the toejack, so you don't end up doing the same thing you would with a prybar.

I love these old machines like this, the only thing that bugs me is the state of the paint on it. I really hope they plan on repainting this gorgeous hammer.

I've been watching Alec channel for a few years now on UA-cam. It's great to see the progress the learning the enthusiasm the journey.
