Alec, don't put off fixing that cylinder timing issue.
Part 4?
It wouldnt happen to be because it is sitting up on a timber plinth giving the treadle more travel?
@@jeremychurch590 Ah...this sounds like the path to wisdom.
@@jeremychurch590 Excellent point, Jeremy!
@@jeremychurch590 Its funny, I came here to say this, It might not be exactly the correct fix, but it would be a potentially easy fix to just adjust the treadle so that you can't give it too much 'gas.'
Suggestion: put a stopper under the foot pedal until you've fixed the issue with the timing. This will give you a "safe guard" on how far you can press on it with your feet.
the reason why they have this problem is because the hammer doesn't sit directly on the floor as it's supposed to so the foot pedal goes down further than it needs to, as topper would be the quickest solution I agree.
Bruno.Martin KIM Dude, you’re a genius!
Could put a threaded sleeve in the concrete with a large diameter bolt that threads in with a stop nut to make it adjustable as well.
That is what I was thinking too, but I know nothing about power hammers.
Bruno.Martin KIM that’s a good idea. Sometimes the simplest fix gets overlooked
Keep Jamie editing for as long as possible, the man is damn good at what he does.
Girl: guys just want one thing and it's disgusting.
Guys: *laughs hysterically using 300lbs power hammer
*Everyone* laughs hysterically after their first time with that thing.
I’m a girl......
@@Quanice815 I'm sorry.
readysetnogo it’s good I’m not what people usually think of when they hear the word “girl”
@@Quanice815 i'm thinking a dude who lost his wang in a power hammer accident.
credit to the editer: Timing the POWER HAMMER'S beats to the music ;D
Jamie is a beast!!’
Was kinda cheesy tbh
Just like the old days. It's an amazing sight to see.
@@AlecSteele In the time being I recommend you wear helmets while operating the hammer!
Timon Aigner shut up
"You can definitely eat soup out of this one" 😂 GREAT RECRUIT !
Part 4 - Fixing the ram hitting the top of the cylinder
Part 5 - Giving it a decent paint job
Yep, both of these need to be fixed immediately. That terrible paint job! I Guess the cylinder safety issue is important too...
Please give it paint job so horrid atm
The worn paint job looks awesome though..
@@Tgiles13 I agree. The paint job is awesome as it is. Gives it a dirty grease monkey kinda look. Saying I paid my dues, and I can still pound the hell outta some hot steel.
I believe he said in previous video that it was painted to look like it is
I just feel like we all need to take a moment and appreciate how much Will trust's Alec with that hammer and how close it's landing to his fingers.
I’ve been watching since the beginning with dirt floors and that microwave you had to climb the ladder to get to. Amazing ride Alec! Keep going!
Me too! Kinda miss the old videos...
Same
That microwave cooking brake was just awesome
Miss the Saturday live shows for sure!
It feels like a lifetime ago😂
With all the things going on right meow, I just want to thank you, Alec and Will, for publishing these videos. They’ve not only always been a great source of knowledge, but a great source of positivity and uplifting energy. You’ve done more for me than you’ll ever know, but I’d love to tell you about. Take care guys!!
"You could definitely eat soup out of this one" - sounds like new-guy Matt has enough personality to hang with the rest
I guess this was one of the criteria for getting the job. Noone needs coworkers on a completely different humor level. Maybe it didn't work out with former partners because of this? ;)
Made me laugh so hard, sounds like he'll fit right in
Oh yeah, definitely
The amount of knowledge between such a relatively young team is incredible!!
Love how both you, your team and the channel are going from strength to strength.
well,, when you ignore the fact that there is no chance in hell that this power hammer weighs only 300lbs ,than you can say that, 1 cubic foot of cast iron or steel weighs 450 lb,this big monster definatly has at least 10 cubic feet,
@@silence-humility-calmness We all miss say things every once in a while
critical thinking who said the machine weighs 300 pounds..
@@brandonbenjamin9452 the title
critical thinking it’s called a 300 pound power hammer because the ram is 300 pounds🤦🏽♂️
Love the work, but I think it really needs a coat or two of paint to really make it look like the crown jewel of your shop.
I was thinking the same he has too
Ironwolfindustrial would do a great job!
Paint it like a P-40 shark nose facing down.
Traid: Shadow coffee!
I'm an old Tool Maker and I'd can understand the kind of joy you feel with your new Power Hammer... and I'm very happy for you (all of you), it is be another step further... to the "perfection" in your creations...
“You can definitely eat soup outta this one.” best quote ive heard by a long shot
I was thinking the same thing! New guy is killin it 2 episodes in.
I read this comment before watching and I was like ?????
Then I saw that part of the video and exhaled forcibly through my nose
8:47 -- now I want to see a timelapse of how long it takes your other power hammers to get a similar piece of steel into a similar shape... =p
I want to see him do it by hand.
@@robgoose8126 it would probably take a week at least
Its likely about 5 to 1 for number of heats. It basically turned that round stock into a bar in 10 strikes....
I'd murder an umpalupa with a lawnmower for a hammer like that.
@@hogfry I'd slap a newborn baby with a fresh pork loin for a hammer like that.
I love how far you have come from your little old shop in the UK. To having this monster of a machine running, and moving metal!
Most children:
I wanna be a pilot
I wanna be a doctor
I wanna be a cop

Im 12, i have lathe, a bandsaw from Christmas, a mig welder, a stick welder, a cordless angle grinder and so on. I use them all the time. That is my dream workshop.
Me: I want a 3 ton drop hammer
I am always recommending people watch your channel, not just for the work you do but to show that a young person with drive and determination can get a great education in a valuable skill. I'm not speaking against getting a degree just saying that no matter how you get your education, keep learning.
Please keep posting you are an inspiration.
3 Episodes for this vs however many for the Zweihander handle... Seems your ability to fix industrial tools is soon going to surpass your ability to make swords. You might need to switch tack soon.
I haven't watched your vids in forever, but now that im back i actually missed your voice and personality
Thank you for sharing all this. When you’re ill and stuck at home, inactive, it is such a great thing to watch others fix fabricate and create.
I love how you guys just make the tools to do the small task rather than sourcing parts. It’s good to see the labour being done in a time where ordering to deliver is so easy.
1:57 speaking of terminology, the piece of metal that holds the sow-block and the die in place in the dovetail, is actually called a gib not a key. :D
Different countries have different terms
English vs. American.
a gib is a key...
It’s a key here in America. Gib goes on a mill haha
A key keeps something in place a gib strip stops lateral movement
Its impossible to watch this video without a big smile. Their happines is so inebriating.
POWER! MORE POWER! Your's and Will's enthusiasm and excitement for a joy to watch. Steady on young masters, and keep dreaming BIG!
Alex, I'm an ER Doc, and I just want to say, thanks to you and Will. Amidst the chaos of the viral pandemic, watching your videos gives me a sense of normalcy, levity and as always your ridiculous level of cheerfulness makes me smile. Keep it up. in your own way your helping the world be a better place.
*Alec promotes coffee*
The Spiffing Brit Would Like A Word
cracked me up!
A brit that drinks coffee vs a brit that doesn't, you know what I call that? I call it PERFECTLY BALANCED
coffee is for men though that's why
Go back to his earlier vids, Alec's always been a Freedomaboo and he lives in Montana one of the most Freedomiest states in Freedomland.
@@darthtiberius3716 Could've fooled me. Cause all I see is a bunch of fresh faced young boys.
Put a paper inbetween the dies and lower them down, look at the impression on the paper from where the dies are high and low, then grind the dies square relative to each other.
I find it very comforting to see young men passionate about maintaining the art of metalworking. I wish you many years of success.
Not a guy who comments often so here goes. Alec, you're the reason I'm building a forge in my garage. Im not ready to buy a power hammer although i would love nothing more than to have a Chambersburg of my own! I love youre vids and the energy you bring is infectious! Thank you Alec!!
Grinding outside the grindingroom...
Absolute savage!
I love that every impact causes the camera image to warp. :D
Very good caveats regarding safety. It is never good to underestimate the huge forces at work while forging and machining. It's truly a service to those who would try to emulate your work. 👌
My favorite thing about this channel is seeing such young guys knowing what the hell they're doing and actually mastering their craft. Beautiful to see.
So pumped with the end result and great work you boys did on this! You saved a gem there. Keep up the great work and certainly use this as an opportunity to maybe put some more time into these repair/build tool vids. I'm hooked!
That’s some nice engineering with that old hammer .The old timers were great at building machines . They don’t make things like that locally any more.✌️👏
Alec, you are soo philosophical when it comes to expressing your excitement about your projects!!!! You either start or and finish!!!!
It's nice to see someone genuinely grateful for their good fortune. Many of us never get to realize our dreams.
"Welcome back to the workshop, it's FANTASTIC to have you here on Part 87 of Forging a Damascus Power--Hammer Die, Will's going to get back on the hand-sanding..."
“That’s a big ol piece of steele!”
Me: 👀
I rarely comment, but I have to say... I have been following you since your small shop across the pond. And the look of pure joy on your face with this new toy... It's just amazing. Can't wait to see what you will do with it!
Your videos were in my recommendations, and I decided to subscribe. After watching this series, I am impressed with a couple of things: your ability to bring cheerfulness and enthusiasm to your work, and your ability to present your sponsors with the same cheerfulness and enthusiasm. Bravo, Master Steele. Cheers from Vancouver BC Canada 🍻 🇨🇦
8:35 is that the real mrs steele back there!?
Nick Maclachlan really early on in the channel he talked about how his major goal for the Chanel is to build it into a Buissness so that he can support a family someday. I don’t remember the exact wording but I think he said wife. Also I think he is engaged? Just is often not wearing the ring due to working with dangerous equipment that can catch on the ring and take his finger off
Nick Maclachlan oh actually he has a video where he made the ring himself
Paint it!
I enjoy that there is a really metal backtrack to these guys just giggling over this machine.
10:00 Alec's incredible skill and control in squaring up that steel is evident in that shot.
Anyone else want to get to the bottom of how the cylinder is going to be fixed? Like this comment now to let Alec Steele know it is once again time to make s'more content y'all!
Not really interested in forging but yt recommended me the first part of this hammer build. Now i just have to watch what the final result is 😅
Epic movement of steel. Glad you fellers are enjoying your work. Have a good week.
Y'all make everything you touch better. I am inspired.
When they talk about a machine doing work, just show this machine. That thing was just having it's way with the hot steel.
3:42 dude wasnt happy about something lol
I really appreaciate your concern for safety!
so much better than most of what ou see on UA-cam
Watching Will hold the sleeve while Alec riveted it gave me the willies!! Either he’s the most trusting person ever or not as bright as I thought. Totally expected a 2 finger smash hospital trip there.
Me: *sees Pittsburgh on the side*
My brain: "Harbor Freight power hammer"
I'd buy one, tbh.
If they made mechanical hammers about the size Will's little giant, they would sell like hot cakes.
Or even something as "simple" as a factory built 50lbs tire hammer
That little riff at 4:07 had me feeling a little rage... as if I should be mad at the machine 🤔😠😉
lmao. FEEL THE RAGE!
That’s... stupid
@@xbear7473 wooosh
Could you say, rage against the machine?
Glad I wasn’t the only one that got that vibe!!!
Man it is just mesmerizing to watch this power hammer at work! It definitely puts the POWER in power hammer!
Makes me happy to see someone that genuinely happy. Great job Alec and team!
Hey, guys, I saw a video where they turned a old file into a knife and I was wondering if you all could do this so we could see your interpretation of that and maybe a competition between all of you?
I love this Idea
Its 4 am here should sleep
UA-cam :Hey this messy haired brit forging with a big ass power hammer
Yes why not
You said it best, that power hammer is a beast! That is so cool! I can see how excited you and Will are to have this new tool. I'm excited to see how you all utilize it.
Alex skill with the machine really shows at 10:02. WOW! what a pounder!
Can I make a rather URGENT suggestion? I'm going to, regardless. The suggestion is THIS:
establish an IRON-CLAD RULE (forgive the pun) that if you are operating the Chambersburg, YOU ARE WEARING A HARDHAT!
As someone whose life has been saved by safety-equipment (someone dropped 90lbs. box of exercise equipment on my head), I can tell you that THAT MOMENT, the moment in which you realize that if you HADN'T been wearing a hardhat that you would already be DEAD, makes a bigger impression than the thing that bounced of your hardhat WOULD have made.
"The top could come off and kill somebody"
Which means it should be fixed before anyone operates it!
Well let's not go crazy now. Let the new guy run it awhile. lol
That's unamerican.
Yes! But after we play with it a little
If your scared stay in the kitchen mam
i feel like its pretty obvious he doubts the likelyhood of that happening unless their incredibly reckless with it, cause with channels with safety involved like this one they often leave the safety talks out because they kinda boring
Would really love to see both Alec and William using the two main power hammers simultaneously. Also, would love to see the massive aniang, or however its spelt, from a far while it's being used to get the full scope of its magnitude!
I love the excitement on his face. I really like watching people work when they are passionate about something. xD
I wouldn’t use it until I figured out and fixed the “hitting the top” problem
Notification squad!!!
Also this thing needs a coat of paint it is too cool to look run down
Damn I've never got this many likes what is going on 😂😂
Yeah, it looks kinda scabby at the mo.
I was thinking media blasting back to bare metal then a repaint.
Can you do inlays on cast iron ? Just had a thought painting it to look super fancy would be cool
Can do inlays on anything. Old times scroll work shaped inlays would be sick imho
The joy on Alec's face as that cylinder of steel quickly upset to a disc... 😄
Why do I like this series so much? Fantastic.
When Alec said, "without ending up in the hospital" and cut to Will hammering, I was expecting the worst.
4:05 Bulls on Parade!
M G My thoughts exactly!
Sounds like it but it’s just the cords
M G had to do some scrolling but found somebody else that noticed... been on a bit of a RATM kick lately
@@erik365365365 Well yeah, it's copyrighted.
WOW!!!! What an amazing machine!!!! The fact that you guys are craftsman is one thing, but the amount of fun you seem to be having brings tears to my eyes. I just want to jump through the screen and join in!! Woohoo. Thanks for sharing your new toy. What’s next?? Waiting around for the next one 😁😁👍👍
Y’all look genuinely happy
Any plans in cleaning up the outside, painting and sealing it so that it doesnt rust/ and or looks nicer? just wondering
Yes please paint the darn thing
@@deonviljoen9504 but leave the smiley face on as a reminder of its origins
@@plutotheplanet5341 that is a must. The face suits it so well. And the face gives it so much character like the other power hammer with the googly eyes.
The new hammer is driving me mad, it's that smiling face, I'm convinced I've seen it before, somewhere on the internet many years ago but try as I met, I just can't find it. I'm sure I've seen it before, I'm sure I have...!

Feel the same. Cant remember on which Chanel
yep me too, have no idea from where. I hope it's not mandela effect! Quick edit, I believe it was at a shop tour vid when he visited a larger workshop
Same... I need to know where it came from.
Something so fucking amazing watching passionate kids working with tools of this calibre. Gives me hope.
Can’t wait to see the gorgeous steel you forge with this new machine !!
still love the simile face! Lets make sure they keep it!
I reckon keep the face idea, but flash it up. Get a local airbrush artist in and do the whole machine as a mural to industry, with a new, better face in place of the old. Cross-trade colabs for the win!
I love SIMILES too. That hammer eats steel like cookie monster and his cookies.
Alec get it painted looks a mess!!! And some more googly eyes too!!!
simon salisbury I think it’s quite charming in its current state
mess? it looks on point
Wow, you can totally see the power and efficiency of that. Fewer heats, better crystal structure!
Quick history lesson:
Chambersburg power hammer was manufactured by Chambersburg Engineering Co. Which was located in Chambersburg Pennsylvania which happens to be the town I live it. Alec keeps finding ways to connect things he loves and does with things I love and do and now live.
7:40 - Would have been appropriate with: "So Sorry Nate" :P
Was thinking the same thing.
Who else is getting a sinking feeling that they did something bad to the zweihander? Seems like they haven't done anything on it in a zwhile. Imagining the sword breaker all over again....
Glad to see it all worked out guys. More power!!!
Alec Steele moved by a steel moving beast! Awesome!
"Dead nuts" LMAO
Being *dead nuts on* is something you hear a lot on AvE's channel
Machinist term for perfect haha

That is one hell of a beast of a power hammer. Good to see ya got it up and running full bore. I can't wait to see what you do with it. So now we just need to see it making something sharp and pointy... lol. Thanks for sharing this amazing job in refurbishing the Beast. Have a beautiful day guys.
Congrats on the 'win'. That's a beautiful piece of machinery.
You should try doing a collab with a well known artist on UA-cam, to give the power hammer a custom paint job!
Maybe my mechanics, but he would make e new one 😀
