Alec: let's train doggo to wear hearing protection!
Doggo: Let's train Alec to give me a whole bag of treats!
They are called mutt muffs.
Months ago:
Alec: let's train Will to wear hearing protection!
Will: Let's train Alec to give me a whole bag of treats!
(Sorry Will)
Hahahahaha 😂
Next episode: Alec going to the store for dog treats in a quarantine.
Make a sekond Channel Just for the Dog
Plot twist: Yogo understood the reason for the earmuffs instantly and just pretends not to, to get more treats.
Lol
Deserve a like just for taking care of the dog.
It looks like the dog enjoyed a change of scenery.
Yogo just looked really done with the training as they kept going
Logan Carter lol. The second time he placed them on her head she was like. “So... you want me to wear them, right?”
And then it took like.... forever to get there haha
At the end i dont think she could hear him. She was waiting on hand gestures.
@John Chrysostom Rev 3:9 is that why I can't find motivation for school work
Turns out Alec is ditching forging and becoming a professional dog trainer!
Ben Perkins it takes time, patience and dedication to train a dog. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the man.
As a professional dog trainer i have to say, his technique is perfect. Everything from the touch command and free shaping into putting the muffs on, to adding distance gradually, and even even the hand signals were perfect.
He would have made Barbara Woodhouse proud! Walkies!
Alec Steele....The dog whisperer.
@@nicksims1046 right? I'm in no expert myself, but married to one. I wasn't expecting to see well executed positive reinforcement training on a blacksmithing channel. Well done!
I'm more of a cat person, but damn, Yogo is one cute doggo! Seeing her with earmuffs made my heart melt!
that fire was a big blow to a lot of the uk blacksmith community, with all the original drawings and plans now lost and hundreds of years of history, i hope they can rebuild.
Peposad
That's why you digitize everything.
consistency 14 I live up in Scotland and always wanted to travel down so it did not really affect me personally but I know a lot of people down there that had been there and had learned thing there and every one had a story and with just the history going back I think 300 years it is a loss to a dying art as it was a beacon
Such a sad story. I had the opportunity to work in the workshop very old school feel to the place but learnt a lot in the 2 days I was there. Good cafe at the top of the road! Hope to see them again especially since they have 2 of our lifter shafts. All the best to them
One word: insurance
When are you going to make Doggie armor for her.
Yo that would be hilarious I'm dying
I'm imagining Battle Cat type armor and a tiny He-man doll on her back
I'd love to see that 😂
Tbh doggie shooes might not be the worst idea for her
I'm having trouble thinking of armor that would work without grabbing and pulling fur.... ok maybe with a nice heavy quilted underlayer.....
I really enjoy these "chore videos"! Makes me feel better about not doing mine
I have spent the last 3 days cleaning my workshop, sorting through material and getting rid of useless junk. I hear you... I was postponing this for the past month.

Damascus dog tag?
Yes please
Yessssss
With engraving
Why not just make a Damascus dog with its own dog dog tag
@@firnatine529 They are usually stamped, with a special type writer. The old ones were done by hand (actually typing it into it) and the new ones are more digital, put everything in and basically hit enter and it does it for you. So I think that would be a better/ cooler/ more traditional way
Correct me if I'm wrong Alec, but does that improvement you made to power hammer have you tickled....pink?
it does work....a treat though
Go sit in the corner and think about what you did!
Paint the whole thing pink!
No puns in the shop sir. Come with me...
I was looking for this
Finally some classic alec video! Still in frame shots of simple forging. 100%better than what we have been watching the 6 months or so.
Alec: let's forge some tools to forge a tool to forge a tool
welcome to blacksmithing!
And then use the tool to forge a forge, and then the forge to forge a tool for the forge forge...
Forgeception!!
Because, as Ze Frank would say, “That’s how the blacksmith do.”
Yes Alec! The treadle is just the beginning of the safety pink power hammer!
AND he trains the dog. Skillfully and cheerfully. Plus all that FUN with the camera!! Hikes, camping, etc. Fund drives. Alec Steele is an all-around dude! I'm sure, one day, his daughter will be forging right alongside.
In the next episode, Alec teaches Yogo how to press the treadle when he wants to use the power hammer. I was going to suggest teaching her how to hand sand, but then Will would be out of a job.
On today’s episode of “Pimp My Powerhammer”...
I would rather say: "Pink My Powerhammer"
LOLOLOLOLO!!!!!!!!
I'm pretty sure that he's not renting out his power hammer in this video...
You're increase in CFM has increased the velocity of the air in the pipe, if you increase the diameter the air will slow down. Flowrate(in3/s)=velocity(in/s) x area(in2).
Nick Favell Alec needs to lean on the comment community for some aerospace engineers or fluids guys to throw some thermodynamics magic at the problem
I think that’s half the solution but combine that with where the gas mixes in the system before an elbow and the pressure produced by that blower may very well be defeating the pressure of the gas. Figure every inch of H2O produced by the blower reduces the gas by the same inch and when only running approx 7” WC, 2” produced by the blower is around 27% gas lost
My 2 cents is to smooth out the gas flow. Get rid of the 90 and replace it with a couple of 45s.
He could also do that by running an extension pipe out of the shop to relocate the noise or he could use a dimmer for some sort of speed control.
@@user-qy8kw4cn2s he needs a better way to regulate his air speed to me it seems that setup worked fine for propane but on natural gas it doesn't have the gas density to air right and his air flow is so high he is literally blowing out the candle.
With all the static holds, heavy clumps of steel, hammering and all in all general work; I bet Alec has one helluva handshake.
I am really enjoying this mix of content. A bit of old school, a bit of low budget knives, and some new shop / new skills stuff. Very enjoyable.
I'm loving it being back to seeing you work. It was starting to get boring on the channel but the lock down has got you being imaginative and creative again. Keep up the good work :)
Glad to see hearing protection for your pup , that always concerned me about shop dogs and cats.
You’re brilliant with that pretty pupper, well done. How people treat animals usually reflects their personality
These quarenting videos remind me of the old days. I'm really enjoying the videos!
Haha he game the hammer a “pinky toe” lol I love it. Stay safe guys.
Not my area of expertise in engineering (non compressible liquids are fun, compressible gases are scary to me), but I'd hazard a guess and say you're air velocity is too high. You want to increase your volumetric flow rate to get more oxygen, but at the same time you don't want to increase velocity much at all. You're new fan is pushing more air, but without a change in area, it's got to go faster through the pipe. Increase the area (larger pipe size) and you'll get the same volume/time but it doesn't have to move as fast and it might not extinguish your flame.
That being said, without changing the nozzles in the forge, I'm not sure how you'd get a lower velocity entering the forge, if the nozzles don't change either.
Maybe it's a pressure thing? Again, gases aren't my thing. I barely had a handle on my fluids class and we only looked at water and oil.
I think you hit the nail. Going from a 4' pump discharge to a 2 1/2" or 3" steel pipe, he has made his own venturi which is what you said. He has speeded up the air which gives more pressure. Alec, if you have read this far, take off all the iron pipe and use 4' pvc or metal furnace pipe from the blower to the forge. If still too much air, install a 4' slide gate from a dust collection system to regulate the amount of air.
Or hook the fan up to a VARIAC so he has total control over the speed of the fan
@consistency 14 Don't you know? Engineering is all just precision guesswork
Has anyone thought of just drilling out the holes in the burner to see if they are not partially clogged?
I'm sorry for this but I gotta do it: You're = You are. It's *your 😂
Came for Yogo ears, stayed for the forging. 10/10. you're really good at positive reinforcement, and Yogo is really well trained.
Awwww. Doggy ear pro. That's really cool, Alec. Somebody loves his puppy dog! 👍❤️
"YOGO'S EARS" how to make a title pop, with curiosityl
awwwwwww that's so sweet that you're using positive reinforcement training to get her used to the hearing protection, and she is such an absolutely adorable good good girl. i love her
Such a good dog and such a great master, good on you for keeping her safe and for doing it in such a positive way. So many people would just slap em on her and call it a day, but you made it a good thing for her.
I'm a dog trainer and this was the perfect way to use positive reinforcement training! You kept it fun for her the entire time! 😁
Glad to see that haphazardly duct-taping air intakes is a universal blacksmith thing
Nice work with Yogo! And thanks for sharing. It's great to see some good dog training strategies shared. Few people probably take that level of consideration for their dogs
If you get bored, you should sew a treat pouch you can wear on your hip for training. Maybe even use leather.
THAT is what a dog should be like. Well trained. Good job!
Brings back memories from when I first subscribed. Kinda miss the old workshop. Your amazing with your doggo.
You need to add a little of Bernoulli's principle to the forge. When it comes into the forge widen the pipe (7 degrees would be optimal) to slow down the air flow but you will still have the same mass of air. It will allow the air and gas to mix better to give you a better flame.

Will: Maybe the quarentine is affecting Alec's thoughts...
Alec: I'll paint this pink!!!
Alec: I'm tired of hearing my own voice so I am just going to get lost in my work.
Certainly affecting his hair style 😁
NEVER, never apologise for commiting to your art, to your passion, to your work. As for many of us, will enjoy any lenght of a video about you making stuff. Even more, if its done with the passion you have.
There is nothing better than a man who loves his dog.
Phew, read the title as "forging yogos ears". Got scared there for a second😁
*forging yogos ears*
-phobia of prosthetics.... that’s a new one
The pink paint job is incredible... ‘that’s a hell of a paint job’ :)
I want the whole thing painted that colour
There is absolutely nothing better in the world than watching a master get in the zone. Watching you work an entire part through like that is fantastic. I learn a stupid amount from watching you move metal, and you get to have a fantastic time moving metal. Win Win.
No, no, like REALLY moving metal. Who the hell moves that well with a 300 lb hammer next to their head. Amazing.
Also, yep, the cutest of puppers
The kindness shown in training the puppers to wear protective gear is wonderful
The issue with the forge/ new blower might be that the air is moving too fast, and basically blowing the fire out. That would explain the unstable fire, the fire being shot out against the far wall, and also why only half the brick is burning, the gas/air gets pushed out the front before it has a chance to spread out, or potentially the Bernoulli effect creating a vacuum and pulling air in through the other holes.
A VARIAC would allow him to decrease the speed of the fan by adjusting the voltage downwards causing the fan to spin more slowly.
That is what I was wondering. Too much air velocity.
yep, looks like your pipe for the air is too small in diameter and the resulting air velocity is too high. Also the mixing of the gas may be an issue like if the stream gas doesn't have the time to mix with the air properly. To increase mixing you may stick something in the pipe to create turbulence , some sort of blade/propeller. Good Luck
That was my first thought too, that the gas mix is moving out faster than the flame front. But I don't know enough about these things to say for sure
@consistency 14 why are you mad? He's struggling with a fluid dynamics/ chemical reaction problem. Given the relatively high velocity of air/gas, and the relatively low pressure, it's very possible that the Bernoulli principle is causing some of the issues, especially when he said it's not how he expected it to look, which means that something unintuitive is going on. If you think I'm showing off by saying "Bernoulli principle", that's not the case, I'm using the name of a phenomenon to reference that very important but sometimes counter-intuitive phenomenon.

Omg yes
8:07 I love the timing of the music to the power hammer. It's one of my favorite bits!
I really enjoy Yogo hangin around the shop!
Oh my, when you started painting that treadle, my heart just stopped for a second.
Oh and maybe you could make some reliëf on the steel. Just like chequered plate.
I like that he commented on how nice the paint job was then later in the video he does a close up with it and its only half painted and all runny on the bottom with over spray everywhere.
Alec,
My two cents worth: It appears that the piping size is correct since it is what came with the burner. So, calling on my experiences with cooking ovens and industrial boilers, it sure looks to me like your gas pressure is low and cannot overcome the increased static pressure in the piping to the burner. This back pressure is caused by the burner holes themselves and not the piping leading to the burner. A higher pressure blower only makes this worse. Can you increase the gas pressure at the gas regulator to try this theory out?
It did really look like the fuel/air mix was way too lean, and natural gas lines aren't really that high pressure, so it could well be the air pressure in the pipe gets high enough to basically shut off most of the gas flow. But also, if it seems the ribbon burner only burns partially, it could also be clogged (which would exacerbate the issue.
would that mean a bigger pipe with slower air would make it even worse? (fast air = less pressure, right?)
I think this is basically correct. I’m not sure what he would do to fix it without changing the whole piping. He probably needs to find a way to dampen that fan a bit more and see if it gets close.
Finally someone with the correct answer. As an engineer I can assure you, that the problem is the ribbon burner itself. Because natural gas has such a low pressure you have to lower the overall resistance for the airflow. Beginning at the WORST component in terms of resistance. And that is the matrix of the ribbon burner! Enlarge these and you'll get more volume with the right mix. Problem solved!
Spent almost my entire week in the hospital with aspiration pneumonia as a result of a complication after surgery, this video just made my whole week 100% better. Love watching Alec and Will and Yogo of course!!!
Great COLOR! Told you Pink was perfect for that beast!
i can only imagine that the zweihander is still being hand sanded to this day
Try changing out the 90 & replace with a " T" with an adjustable door on the , to control air flow.
Alec I don't know what it is but I can't stop watching your vids. I really appreciate what you do and enjoy every video.
Congratulations on fixing your big Power Hammer , Alec. Also your Dog is So Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yogo is sooooo cute! Especially with the hearing protections!
When you can’t decide what to call your episode 🤣
True story!
@@AlecSteele lol
Once again a wholesome treat, for the dog and us! Many thanks sir.
Nice to see Alec go back to his old youtube style, talk a little, show the work, and make tools.
Can we get a steel vs stelter forging at home episode?
I guess Alec doesn't have anything forging at home because he has a big workshop. Will used to forge at home before Alec moved and they threw together their bussinesses. So Will still has his stuff at home.
So with Alec in the main shop and will at home its a little less Steele vs stelter and a little more of a Steele vs shelter.
@@gizanked I missread the Steele vs. Shelter to Steele vs. Shelter.
I wonder if yogo will change colour after hanging out in the workshop with all that dust and stuff
I learn something every time I watch Alec. Now, I have ideas for new safety equipment training for staff.
Nice training with your doggo! She picked it up super quick. Imagine hearing everything you do now, only 10x as loud. Who wouldn't get freaked out by that level of noise?
Nobody: ...
Alec: GOOD GIRL!!!!
XD lol, btw did anyone count how many good girls Alec said? XD
My call is that he said it 19 times, once at the beginning, 18 times during the training.
Now i am not an engineer, or in any ways knowledgeable about forges or mixtures of oxygen and natural gas for the right heat and flame.... but I wonder if there is the there is too much power from the new forge blower... Perhaps the larger pipes that others have mentioned might help a little with that.
I m glad that you took my advice about the excessive noise to your dog and I really appreciate the fact that you went out of your way to be able to work near your dog
Just Binge Watched A Few Of Aleecs Older Videos, And The Change Between Back Then And Now In Aleec Is Amazing🔥
Is it possible that at your altitude, an oxygen separator feeding into the intake of the fan would be more useful than increasing the overall volume of air getting in...at least beyond a certain point? Recognising of course that at the moment sourcing an oxygen separator for a non-medical purpose might not be the most prudent...
Just out of curiousity can you find out what type of gas the big forge was run off, you might have the wrong jet set up.
yeah i was thinking that there is an incorrect mixture of gas, or that the gas is not mixing with the air properly.
Spot on dog training brother! As much as I love watching your videos, your dog handling really made my day. Best to you and yours.
Alec Steele's new Bouncy Castle Blower channel! Love it. From the thumbnail, I assumed The Dog's Ears was some sort of Cockney slang
I'm going to take a guess and say the fluid velocity is too high for the gas and air to mix and burn properly. I think you might need a bigger ribbon burner
Can we get some more raw forging noises. That section with the noise of the hammer and steel I loved it.
Thank you so so much for addressing your gorgeous dog's ears.
What a well trained pup!
What are your thoughts on an induction forge
4:14 Ah yes. The shin-buster 9000
Nothing wrong with pink, some of the best memories I have revolve around the color pink 👌
big thumbs up for the positive protection for the doggo
Alec wouldn’t the Yogos earmuffs be called “Ruff Muffs”?
Let's be honest, we all came here to see Yogo's ears. However, the shot with Alec just hammering away at a piece acapella was nigh on therapeutic.
I am always so impressed buy the sheer quality of editing in these videos
I am a dog handler/trainer and I must say.... well done Alec. Thanks for the videos
I feel bad for the new blacksmith they hired. He went through the whole process just to not be able to work for several weeks due to circumstances completely out of his control. Hopefully we’ll be able to see more of him in the future!
All the tools in the shop, but you undo the bolts with an adjustable 😭😭
When half the bolts are SAE and the rest are metric sometimes its just easier to grab the adjustable even if they end up rounding the corners of the bolt. I'd be willing to bet there aren't any metric bolts on that power hammer.
gary bower that’s a good point, just breaks my heart to see a bolt being removed with an adjustment 😂😂
Hey Alec you need to put a gate valve on you big forge. Your small forge has one so put one on the monster. Its going to allow you to adjust the amount of air going to burner allowing you to achieve the flame your after. Been watching for 3 years and still love your stuff, keep up the good work 👍
Great to see some back to basics forging Alec. Have missed it lately.
Great video.
Im supprised you dont have one of those infared thermometers you point at stuff to see how hot the forge is.
As for it not working sometimes it better to strip it right back and start from the beginning to get it to work properly.
Hope its fixed soon
