"Total Eclipse of the Heart", "Holding Out For A Hero" from the movie Footloose, both by Bonnie Tyler, "Making Love out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply and two songs from the movie Streets of Fire "Tonight is What it Means To Be Young" and Nowhere Fast" are by Jim Steinman too. The two songs in the movie Streets Of Fire are credited as being performed by Fire Incorporated. Fire Incorporated was a band Steinman created from studio musicians just for the movie soundtrack. Streets Of Fire was a music driven "Rock 'n Roll fable".

this. Although for some reason all of our minds go to 'that' being sex, or murder, or some illusive thing... but no literally.. each chorus he tells you the thing he won't do... Each Chorus tells you twice that he'll do anything for love. Then there's a but, and the thing he won't do. Example, the first Chorus he sings "But i'll never forget the way you feel right now" THAT is the THAT for that chorus.. next chorus he says "But i'll never forgive myself if we don't go all the way (Tonight)" Forgiving himself is the THAT for that chorus... THEN if you go read the words at the very beginning of the video... the whole thing will make sense... heh

Just gone 28 years since I first heard that incredible voice singing this amazing song. I was 6 years old and knew that this was something special. Still get that same thrill at the piano intro, and the same chills when he starts to sing. Just love Meat Loaf, he's one of a kind. That VOICE! 😍 Incidentally, he turned down the chance to train as an opera singer way back in the early 1970s for a staggering salary. Instead, he auditioned for a role in composer Jim Steinman's musical, Steinman wrote a whole new part for him, and the two of them went on to create the "Bat Out of Hell" album, with producer Todd Rundgren. Also, to answer the perennial question: the things he won't do for love:
"Forget the way you feel right now."
"Do it better than I do it with you."
"Forgive myself if we don't go all the way."
"Stop dreaming of you every night of my life."
Thank you for starting out with this song. A lot of reactors start with "Paradise", which is a fun song and video, but doesn't show off his awesome vocal range like "Anything For Love" and "Bat Out of Hell" do. So glad you enjoyed this one, and have fun exploring the Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman rabbit hole! :)

    2. forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight,
    3. do it better than I do it with you,
    4. stop dreaming of you every night of my life,

I never really got why people insist there's a huge mystery in the lyrics and nobody knows what he means in the chours. He literally mentions two things he won´t do in the first verse (he'll never lie to her and that's a fact, and he'll never forget the way she feels right now), and then in the next verse he says he'll never forgive himself if they don't go all the way tonight. He spends the rest of the song giving examples of what he WOULD do, and saying in the chorus that he'd do anything for love but that he won't do that, you know, the things he said in the verses he'd never do.

I waited on Meat Loaf in January, 2000 while working at Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, Florida. I asked him what he wouldn't do? He sighed, and said, "have you heard the song? Do you KNOW the f'ing song? The answer is IN the F'ING SONG." So I said, "you won't do it better, stop dreaming of her, or be screwin' around"? He smiled and gave me two backstage passes at that night's show at Hard Rock Live, and left a $100 tip. One of the absolute BEST shows I have ever seen. Unfortunately, after the show when my wife and I went to go backstage to meet him, he had passed out from exhaustion and had been taken to the hospital.
He was a great vocalist, a talented actor, and a genuinely nice guy. One of the coolest, nicest stars I ever waited on. Meat Loaf, Alice Cooper, Mark McGrath, all 10 guys from N'Synch and Backstreet Boys (I could never remember who was in which band), and believe it or not Britney Spears were the best, nicest, coolest stars I ever had the pleasure to wait on or do security for.

Each verse mentions two things that the man would do for love, followed by one thing that he will not do. The title phrase repetition reasserts that he "won't do that." Each mention of "that" is a reference to the particular promise that he made earlier in the same verse. The four things he says he will never do are:
*forget the way you feel right now"
*forgive myself if we don't go all the way tonight"
*do it better than I do it with you"
*stop dreaming of you every night of my life"
The female vocalist is Lorraine Crosby, a British session singer. She has also performed with Bonnie Tyler. Other than that, nothing really much of note.

I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" is a song written by Jim Steinman, and recorded by Meat Loaf with Lorraine Crosby. The song was released in August 1993 as the first single from the album Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell. The last six verses feature Crosby, who was credited only as "Mrs. Loud" in the album notes. She does not appear in the video, in which her vocals are lip-synched by Dana Patrick. Meat Loaf promoted the single with American singer Patti Russo.

We are talking quite literally inescapable. Of course, those were pre-Maggie days as well. So nothing surprising about you not recognizing it. Meat Loaf is not exactly the best vocalist, per se, but his choice of always über dramatic Jim Steinman songs is what makes him legend. In terms of what he won’t do for love, “that” has been left up to interpretation I feel. Fun reaction. If nothing else, it made me listen to the song for the first time in over 25 years. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Oh yeah one more thing. Meatloaf always has those big sound moments in almost every song and he truly sounds like he is on the verge of tears when he sings some phrases. A good example is the ending section to his song " For Cryin' Out Loud". That section will bring tears to your eyes because of what is actually being said and with the emotion he is saying it. He is one of the best because he can elicit a feeling of empathy from the listener and make them feel that sadness. There will never be another like him, just like there will never be another Freddie Mercury. He is equally as special.
I also really like the way the guy who actually writes the songs, Jim Steinman is able to write some of the prettiest and heart filled lyrics and then the very last line of the phrase there is a catch or condition to it that makes it impossible from the singers perspective. Spends the beginning of the song painting a very sad, emotional and pretty picture continuously saying "I will do anything for love"........the catch "I just won't do that." So in the end he wouldn't actually do anything for love. Its one of the best human observations I have ever seen, I take it as he is pointing out the hypocrisy of humans who says they have unconditional love while having conditions to it. Very clever writing.
He also did it in songs like "Paradise by the Dashboard light" the final lyrics is literally a person complaining about the vows he made to a girl, 2 out of 3 ain't bad is saying that 3 conditions to his love, however the person only met 2 of the conditions. Even the song I mentioned before is the opposite when he starts with somewhat selfish lyrics followed by why he loves the girl so much. This mans writing will make you think about human behavior, very well worded person.

Lorraine Crosby, a singer from England, was the guest singer. Crosby and her partner Stuart Emerson had moved to Los Angeles to work with Steinman, who became their manager. He secured them a contract with Meat Loaf's label MCA. While visiting the company's studios on Sunset Boulevard, Crosby was asked to provide guide vocals for Meat Loaf, who was recording "I'd Do Anything for Love". Crosby recalls, "In I went and sang it twice and I never thought anything more of it until six months later when I got a phone call saying, 'Would you mind if we used your vocals?'" As Crosby had recorded her part as guide vocals, she received no royalties from the song.[13]

    - 2. Refrain "that" = "forgive myself if we don’t go all the way tonight"

Meat Loaf was a MASSIVE star in the 1970s. Bat Out Of Hell is one of the greatest albums of all time. He came from a musical theater background and practically invented Theatrical (or Wagnerian) Rock. His concerts are EPIC performances...basically a collection of mini-musicals. The girl in this video is just an actress. She was not the actual singer. This version in the video contains the song's radio edit. The full album version is over 12 minutes long. That was typical of Meat Loaf, most of his songs were at least ten minutes longs. His song Paradise By The Dashboard Light is one of my favorite songs of all time, and the video is one of the most entertaining videos ever produced. It's a cautionary tale about teenage lust...told with a comical style.

It's moments like this that I have to realize how lucky I've been with music. My mom was blasting his Bat out of Hell album for days when I was a kid in the 80s lol. Check out the songs Bat out of Hell, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and You Took the Words Right out of my Mouth. I feel you would love them.
